My biggest fears back then revolved around how I would keep them safe. Reconstructing Amelia was my way of processing the dangers I could see lurking ahead on the horizon for them. <br /> <br /> But having been in this motherhood game a bit longer now, I can see that keeping them safe is actually the comparatively easy part—there are concrete measures that can be taken, variables that can be assessed. There are so many things far more difficult to handle—their heartbreak and precarious hopes and impossible-to-answer questions. The things you must just bear for them, because they cannot bear them alone. <br /> <br /> To say nothing of the complexities we, as mothers, bring to the table. How are we biased by the mistakes we’ve made in our own pasts, by the hopes we’ve buried? By the things that have happened to us? <br /> <br /> And so I hope that Reconstructing Amelia and Like Mother, Like Daughter are equally compelling as mysteries and I hope that Like Mother, Like Daughter moves people the way Reconstructing Amelia did.
