Her delicate skin was mostly hidden under a sheer blanket, with only her arms peeking out, bearing the faint red traces of a night filled with passion.

Cynthia Jenkins stirred, letting out a soft moan as she woke from her deep sleep. She tried to get up, but her body, still weary and sore, sank back onto the bed.

Memories from the night before came rushing back, bringing a faint smile to her face. For the first time in their three-year marriage, she and her husband, Nathan Richardson, had made love.

She noticed Nathan wasn't in the room, and a tinge of disappointment flickered across her face, quickly replaced by composure.

At the beginning of their marriage, Nathan had been distant, rarely showing any affection. Cynthia couldn't help but wonder if last night marked a turning point, a sign that he had finally accepted her.

With a flicker of hope, Cynthia rose cheerfully from the bed. The moment her bare feet touched the cold floor, she felt a sudden chill.

Picking up a blue sapphire cufflink, oddly shaped and shimmering, from the floor, Cynthia widened her eyes in surprise. 'Could this be Nathan's?'

Thinking of this, Cynthia smiled and placed the cufflink in her bag. Then, she went to freshen up herself before returning home.

Cynthia had barely stepped out of the door when she ran into an unexpected visitor.

"Cynthia?" The woman in front of her, dressed in a crisp white dress and possessing a sharp, piercing voice, was Kelly Dixon, the second lady of the Dixon family.

Cynthia had always been at odds with the Dixon sisters. Jessica Dixon, the eldest lady of the family, was Nathan's first love. But today, Cynthia was in a good mood. "Kelly, what a surprise to see you here."

"Indeed." Kelly sized up Cynthia with a mocking smile. "If I had arrived a bit earlier or later, I might have missed catching you in the act."

She pointed at the red marks on Cynthia's arms with disdain. "What is this? You shameless woman! How dare you fooling around with other men behind Nathan's back!"

Cynthia frowned, "What are you talking about?"

"Cynthia, I've always known you're shameless, clinging to Nathan. But I never pegged you as someone who'd stoop this low." Kelly's eyes sparkled with the thrill of uncovering a juicy piece of gossip. "Are you really going to say these marks are from a night with Nathan?"

Before Cynthia could utter a word, Kelly cut her off. "Please, cut the act. Nathan was at the hospital last night, staying by my sister's side. He was too busy to even catch a nap, much less waste time on someone like you."

Cynthia's face changed dramatically. "Nathan was at the hospital?"

"Where else would he be? You think he'd come to see you?" Kelly's voice was thick with sarcasm, as if she had just heard something ridiculous. "You've been caught sneaking around with someone else, and I'm not letting this slide so easily!

"I'm going to show Nathan just how low you can go!" Kelly declared, her resolve unwavering. "I'm calling him right now to come over!"

Cynthia couldn't absorb a word. Her mind went blank.

If Nathan had spent the entire night in the hospital, then who was the man who had been so passionately entwined with her last night?

A sudden realization made Cynthia's face darken.

She had been set up!

Yesterday was their three-year wedding anniversary, and Nathan surprisingly messaged her to meet at a hotel.

Overjoyed and without a second thought, Cynthia rushed over. But when she arrived, Nathan texted to say he would be late and even ordered her some takeout.

Cynthia, not sensing anything amiss and simply savoring the food, didn't expect to completely lose consciousness after finishing her meal. And that man last night...

As Cynthia thought about everything that happened last night, her face turned deathly pale. 'How could this happen?'

"Nathan already hates you for taking Jessica's place, and now, he'll never forgive you!" Kelly said triumphantly after a quick phone call. She stood firmly in Cynthia's path, blocking her exit.

Cynthia hadn't even considered leaving. She felt a chill run down her spine. Besides, there weren't many people who could send a message using Nathan's phone.

Soon, Nathan hurried down the corridor. "Kelly, did you need something from me?"

He glanced at Cynthia with impatience. "What are you doing here? Jessica is still in the hospital. What are you up to now?"

"I..." Cynthia opened her mouth, her mind in turmoil, unsure how to respond to him.

"Nathan, I called you here," Kelly interjected eagerly. "I just so happened to see Cynthia sneaking out of a hotel room with some guy. It's serious, so I had to tell you."

Nathan's face darkened instantly. "Cynthia, is it true?"

"Would you believe me if I say I was framed?" Cynthia's eyes held a flicker of hope. "It was you who..."

A smack came!

Nathan's hand struck her face with a resounding slap, his expression cold and detached.

"Pathetic! Why would anyone frame you?" Nathan's eyes blazed with anger at the sight of the red marks on Cynthia's arms.

Even if he had no feelings for Cynthia, she was still his wife in name. This was nothing but a shame to him.

Kelly watched with a smirk, stirring the pot. "Exactly, you must be delusional to think someone's out to get you.

"Nathan, she's just lashing out because you're nice to Jessica. I caught her once, but who knows how many times she's cheated on you. Wake up, man."

"What else do you have to say?" Nathan's gaze was filled with disgust.

"What can I say?" Cynthia touched her burning cheek, a cold despair settling in her heart. She looked at Nathan, fighting the urge to laugh bitterly. "Nathan, don't you even want to ask why I ended up here?"

It was ridiculous that her husband seemed to be solely dedicated to helping others deceive her.

Nathan's eyes were full of disgust. "What exactly are you trying to say?"

Cynthia felt utterly disheartened. She held up her phone, emphasizing each word. "Your phone sent me a message to come here. I trusted it and showed up. Did you text me, Nathan?"

Nathan's gaze flickered. Last night, after getting treated, Jessica borrowed his phone...

"It seems you know now who it was." Cynthia noticed his evasive look and had her suspicions. She smiled through her tears, "Nathan, I'm your wife. I'm the one being framed."

Kelly quickly interjected, "Nathan, don't fall for her act. She's just looking for an excuse..."

"This is between me and my husband. It's not your place to interfere," Cynthia retorted, showing her temper in front of Nathan for the first time.

"You..." Kelly was furious and about to retort.

However, Nathan had made up his mind at that moment. "I sent the text. I got tied up, sure, but that's no excuse for you cheating!"

"It seems this is your choice, then." Cynthia's heart turned cold. Despite knowing she was wronged, he still chose to defend that hypocritical woman. She couldn't believe this was the man she loved.

Nathan didn't show any sign of guilt. "Cynthia, it's you who fooled around with another man. Who else is there to blame?"

Even though he felt somewhat uncomfortable about what Jessica did, he still firmly sided with her.

"I was blind to have trusted the wrong person."

Cynthia closed her eyes, and when she opened them moments later, they were clear and resolved. "Nathan, let's get a divorce."

..............................................................................
"Cynthia, what on earth are you thinking?" Nathan frowned slightly while Kelly's eyes flickered with surprise.

Cynthia gave a self-mocking smile. "Nathan, I'm not someone who clings to what I can't have. Remember, I'm the one walking away from you, not the other way around."

With those words, Cynthia felt a sudden clarity in her heart.

"Cynthia, you're the one who messed up, but here you are, playing word games. Are you threatening Nathan?" Kelly said, secretly pleased.

Cynthia glanced coldly at her. "Kelly, sometimes, you should just stay quiet."

But Nathan's response caught Cynthia off guard. "I don't agree to the divorce."

Cynthia let out a bitter laugh. "Isn't this what you've always wanted? Now that I'm stepping aside, you can be with Jessica happily ever after. Why disagree?

"Or is there something more you're after, something you haven't gotten from me yet?" Cynthia's tone shifted, causing a subtle change in the expressions of the two before her.

She didn't think herself so self-absorbed to believe Nathan still had feelings for her. Their reactions pretty much confirmed her suspicions.

"I guess I was right." Cynthia curled up her lips. "So, Nathan, what's it gonna take for you to sign those divorce papers?"

Nathan's eyes were deep and solemn. At this point, there was nothing left to hide. "Jessica's really sick, Cynthia, and you're the only one who can donate a kidney to save her. That's my only condition. Help her, and you won't regret it, I promise."

Cynthia was thunderstruck, her voice hoarse with disbelief. "You mean, this whole time...you were just after my kidney?"

"Jessica is the only one Nathan loves. Why else would he marry you if not to save her?" Kelly sneered, and Nathan's look confirmed that she was right.

Cynthia felt a chill in her heart. It all made sense now. Nathan had initially balked at his grandfather Mark Richardson's suggestion of marrying Cynthia. He had been adamant about marrying Jessica instead, only to abruptly change his mind when Cynthia was nearly ready to walk away.

She had hoped that, over time, Nathan might come to love her. But she realized now that from the very start, he had been scheming for her kidney!

"Cynthia," Nathan said, softening his tone deliberately. "Just help me out this one time, and I promise to keep today's drama under wraps. I'll make it worth your while, enough to start over somewhere far away."

"In your dreams, Nathan." Cynthia emphasized each word. "Sure, I had feelings for you, but not enough to degrade myself like this."

"Looks like you choose the hard way." Nathan, never one with a good temper, immediately hardened his stance. "If you refuse to donate a kidney to Jessica, I will absolutely not agree to the divorce."

Cynthia laughed angrily and retorted, "Fine by me. Do you have any idea how hard I worked to marry you? If you want to grow old with me, then so be it."

"Cynthia!" Nathan's face soured. He was about to speak when Cynthia ruthlessly cut him off.

"I just give you one chance, Nathan. Be at the Courthouse entrance at 9 AM sharp tomorrow. If you don't show up..."

Cynthia smirked coldly. "Then even better. Jessica can forget about marrying into the Richardson family. And I'll make sure to remind you that you'll be a cuckolds for the rest of your life!"

With that, Cynthia turned and left, not bothering to give Nathan or Kelly a second glance.

"Nathan, what if she refuses the surgery? What about Jessica?" Kelly, watching Cynthia's retreating figure, feigned urgency.

Nathan's gaze was deep. "Don't worry. I'll find a way to make her agree."

As Cynthia stepped out of the hotel, a sleek Rolls-Royce Phantom suddenly pulled up, blocking her path.

The window rolled down, showing a woman in her forties, still exuding charm, a face often seen on financial news.

"You're right on time, Mom." Recognizing the woman, Cynthia wasn't surprised at all, her voice and posture shifting to something more dignified.

"Get in," Heather Brooks said calmly.

With a deep breath, Cynthia got into the back seat. Throughout the ride, they hardly talked to each other.

In Litharia, Jenkins Villa stood majestically in the most coveted scenic area, home to the affluent Jenkins family.

"I've heard the story between you and Nathan. So, have you finally seen Nathan's true colors?"

In the living room of Jenkins Villa, Heather sipped her coffee, looking at Cynthia indifferently. "It's time for you to come back and take over the family business."

..............................................................................
Heather had five children, and aside from her only daughter, Cynthia, the other four sons kept their identities hidden, excelling in their fields but refusing to take over the family business.

Left with no other option, Heather pinned her hopes on Cynthia.

Cynthia breathed deeply, only then realizing that she had been under her mother's watchful eye for these past three years.

It wasn't surprising, though. Since her father's death, the Jenkins family had been fragmented. Heather wasn't truly a Jenkins. Although she had been holding the reins, she was surrounded by those eyeing her position. Eventually, Heather had grown accustomed to keeping everything under her control, leaving no stone unturned.

"It's not possible right now," Cynthia said somewhat helplessly.

Heather's eyes narrowed as she spoke firmly. "What, you still have feelings for him?"

"Of course not," Cynthia couldn't help but laugh dryly. "Mom, I just need some time to divorce him. I promise, after the divorce, I will definitely return to the Jenkins family."

Cynthia mused, why did she ever waste three years pining for Nathan?

Getting the response she wanted, Heather nodded in satisfaction. "That's more like a Jenkins girl. Also..."

"What is it?" Seeing Heather hesitating to speak, Cynthia was curious.

Heather spoke steadily. "The man you slept with at the hotel, do you recall who he is?"

Cynthia's expression froze, and she remained silent.

"I'm thinking about finding this man. If he's decent enough, we could welcome him into the family. The Jenkins can certainly afford to support one more. This would also solidify your position in the family."

What Heather left unsaid was that if the man was not up to her standard, the consequences were obvious.

Cynthia was at a loss for words. She didn't even know how to argue with that.

Back in her room, Cynthia lay on the bed, overwhelmed. What happened today was more thrilling than her life during the past three years combined.

She absently played with the cufflink in her hand, a lone clue left by the mysterious man from the previous night.

Suddenly, Cynthia realized something and sat up abruptly. The cufflink was a limited edition, and her brother, the third sir of the Jenkins, Eric Jenkins, also a leading designer, might know its origin.

Without hesitation, Cynthia called Eric.

"Thia, you've finally taken your eyes off that idiot, huh? What's up?" Eric's voice was cheerful over the phone.

Cynthia couldn't help but smile, "Starting today, Nathan and I have nothing to do with each other. We're getting divorced tomorrow."

At that moment, in the midst of a major international jewelry show, Eric sat up straight. "What? What on earth happened to make the blind girl finally see the light?"

Cynthia laughed. "Come on, stop kidding. Are you free right now? I could really use your help. Check your messages. I've sent you a picture. Can you figure out where this thing's from?"

The next morning, outside the Courthouse, Nathan stood with a stern expression. He arrived on time and had been waiting for two hours without a glimpse of Cynthia.

His calls went unanswered, and just as his patience was running thin, Cynthia finally arrived.

She was dressed to the nines, radiant and elegant, a stark contrast to her former self. Nathan almost didn't recognize her at first sight.

"What now? Getting cold feet about the divorce?" Seeing Cynthia slowly making her appearance, Nathan thought she regretted her decision not to divorce and had dressed up like this to win him back, feeling smug.

"Getting cold feet? Why do I have to?" Cynthia touched her earring. She had intentionally made Nathan wait outside today.

Cynthia was certain that Nathan wouldn't leave as long as his goal remained unmet, even if it meant waiting there all day.

Nathan snorted, "As long as you're willing to help Jessica, we can still be friends."

"What are you thinking? We're getting divorced and you still think we can be friends?" Cynthia scoffed dismissively. "You know what, Nathan? I've changed my mind. Why should I rely on a man who's after my organs? There are plenty of decent men out there, like that guy from the hotel. I'm quite satisfied with him."

Even if Nathan had once saved her life, the help she had given him secretly over the past three years was more than enough to settle any debt.

"Shameless!" Nathan didn't expect Cynthia to change her attitude so quickly, grinding his teeth in anger.

Cynthia was unapologetic. "And what about you? Let's go. I can hardly wait." | LEARN_MORE | https://www.yumread.com/share/middle/hi4orr0xtkbxs | 119497494574812 | Lereader-Great Novel | https://facebook.com/61550087387871 | 205 | 1 | 454,964,960,362,455 | 2024-05-11 02:00 | person_profile | eligible | 0 | 0 | NONE | 0 | 1 | 1 | 0 | Learn more | 0 | Lereader-Great Novel | 120208121529440449 | www.yumread.com | NONE | video | https://www.yumread.com/share/middle/hi4orr0xtkbxsaqtqgsdgqx3?ad_id={{ad.id}}&sid=120208121455770449&campaign={{campaign.name}}&adgroup={{adset.name}} | 2024-05-11 01:45 | https://scontent-iad3-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/440404866_828267332684222_404525868241710678_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_s60x60&_nc_cat=109&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=eWHN7hrYS5sQ7kNvgEZDdqu&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-2.xx&oh=00_AYBJ8mMiGOQ4vJN3FhtrETRI56e4GQjU5chqpFydZsRUeQ&oe=6645F292 | person_profile | 0 | Lereader-Great Novel | https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/441506578_7154829984643411_2082363997224730169_n.jpg?_nc_cat=107&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=aJN6NQldXZ4Q7kNvgHcHwPA&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-1.xx&oh=00_AYAigPFXWUNIimRyrSI8u--ja6qNIiyHHBz1K_eX6QcGeA&oe=6645D1E9 | 0 | 3 | Lereader-Great Novel | 0 | 0 | 2024-05-11 02:00 | View Edit Delete

The hand Sawyer has on Paul's shoulder squeezes.
"Oh you don't want her to know what you did?" Paul lets out a yelp and smirks, but Sawyer looks murderous. "That you're no better than the rest of us?"
"We're leaving."
Sawyer shoves Paul back, and he stumbles before bumping into Luke. Luke manages to save him from falling on his hip.
"He banged you on a bet," Paul blurts out loud enough for the entire restaurant to hear.
————————
SAWYER
The plane is quiet, and I'm not surprised after the meeting this afternoon. Bruce and I are on the same page about where we want this project to go, but Paul was obnoxiously against it. After today, there were clear lines drawn between the two of them and what the direction of the company should be. Father and son going head to head in front of a client isn't exactly what I'd call a successful business trip, and the sooner I can get home to Chloe the better.
Bruce gets a call and for whatever reason decides to go to the private room at the back of the plane to answer it. As soon as the door is closed, Paul starts talking.
"You could have backed me up." He sounds indignant and like a spoiled jerk.
"I would have if I agreed with you," I tell him flatly, and he huffs before dramatically sitting back in his seat.
"Like it or not, I'm the future of this company. You're just an employee." He thinks he's threatening me, but he really has no clue how his father's company operates.
"I'm a consultant, Paul. I'm not an employee. I'm only an advisor to your father until I terminate my contact." It's not my intention to say it like he's five, but it's been a long twenty-four hours, and I'm sick of his nonsense. I've been over it for the past three years, but I've managed to bite my tongue. Bruce pleaded with me not to quit until this project is finished.
"Even better." He's so delusional he thinks that means he's in charge.
Deciding that talking to him is a bad idea, I pull out my phone and text Chloe. After I let her know what time I'll be home, I look back through all the pictures she sent me yesterday. There were lots of the bridal shower and food, but I like the ones she sent me while she was getting ready.
Her legs are undressed as she spreads them wide and she shows me the strip of silk covering her private part. I begged her to pull them to the side and let me see all of her, but she was being a tease.
Last night, I made her get on a video call so I could watch her use the vibrator I bought her. I sat there sipping scotch while she banged herself and moaned my name. I was so hard, but all I did was watch. My balls ache with anticipation, but she's worth waiting for.
Mom is on the phone with Bruce. Is everything okay?
The deal didn't go exactly as planned. I'll tell you when I get home.
Okay.
Kelly is here getting the rest of the gifts from the shower. She said Paul is coming over to help her take them home.
Great.
That bad?
Nothing you can't fix.
I'll be ready the second we're alone.
Maybe we should meet at a hotel?
We'll give them five minutes to get their stuff and leave. Then we make our escape.
Deal.
I'm still grinning when she sends me a dozen emojis that include lips and something that looks like water. Yeah, I plan on doing that to every inch of her body.
"Everything okay?" I ask Bruce when he comes back to his seat.
"Fine," he says dismissively and then directs his attention to Paul. "You embarrassed me today."
The words are heavy, and I don't think I should be here for this discussion. I go to unbuckle and get up from my seat, but Bruce holds out a hand to stop me.
"No, you stay for this, Sawyer. You were made to look like a fool just as much as I was in that conference room."
"Dad—"
"Be quiet," Bruce snaps, and it's the first time I've ever heard him speak to his son this way. "That's what I should have said the second you opened your mouth in that meeting. I've made the mistake of thinking that eventually you'll see how to conduct yourself by being around Sawyer, but I'm disappointed to say that's not been the case."
"You can't be serious." Paul huffs a laugh and Bruce gets angrier.
"I'm serious enough to suspend you from your board seat."
The blood drains from Paul's face as his eyes widen. "You don't have the power to do that."
I decide to keep my mouth shut and not inform Paul that Bruce can do exactly that.
"Monday morning you're going to send a corporate memo stating your desire to step away from your seat to focus on your upcoming nuptials. Until I see a drastic improvement in your attitude and contribution to this company, you're not welcome to help run it."
The finality in Bruce's words might as well be a nail in Paul's coffin. Silence once again falls over the cabin of the plane, and no one says a word. Not even when we land, deboard, and get in the car together to go to my and Chloe's home.
It's not until we pull up at the house that Bruce finally breaks it. "This is for your own good, Paul. I love you, son, and I know you can be a better man than you've shown. You're passionate, and we need that on our side."
Paul looks at his father, and there's something in his eyes. Is it hope? But all too soon that's stripped away with Bruce's next words.
"Until then, Sawyer will be taking over for you. Chloe has really brought him into the family fold since they got married, and I think it's high time he joins us permanently. Don't you agree, Sawyer?"
The urge to tell him no way is lodged in my throat just as the car door is flung open and my bride stands there waiting.
"There she is," Bruce says lovingly as he gets out first and places a peck on Chloe's cheek. "We were just talking about what a favor you did us by marrying Sawyer."
Chloe beams at him, but then her smile falters when I get out of the car. She glances behind me, and her expression changes to one of concern. "Everything okay?" she whispers in my ear when I pull her up in my arms.
"Not even close," I whisper back and glance over to see Paul is livid.
...
CHLOE
I flip the pancake, and when it keeps the perfect heart shape, I smile. I'm making my husband an extra special breakfast before his first day of having to go in to the office. I should be happy about this change, but I'm not. Whenever the subject is brought up I have to force a smile, which only makes me feel guilty. In a roundabout way, I'm lying.
Sawyer has settled into our family nicely, which hadn't been the case in the beginning. The rush to get married didn't please my mom and stepfather, but Paul seemed okay with it. Oftentimes I get overlooked by him, which is totally fine by me. It's better than the attitude I got all those years ago.
Since we got married, Sawyer has been able to work from home and make his own hours. Now that he's having to go in to the office, it will be strange not having him here all the time. Not to mention how much I'm going to ache for the affection he gives me when he's here.
I know Sawyer wants a family, and I've seen how he's grown close with my parents. It took a while for my relationship with Bruce to form, but over time, he's really shown his love for me. It's sweet, and I know Sawyer feels the same. At this point, he's closer to Bruce than to Paul.
"You didn't join me in the shower," Sawyer whispers in my ear and I let out a small scream. He wraps his arm around me and then laughs before placing a buss on my neck. "Sorry, my little scaredy kitten."
"I swear you can come out of nowhere." I peek over my shoulder and wiggle my eyebrows. "In more ways than one."
He gives my hip a small slap and busses me again. "If you would have joined me in the shower, I could've released twice this morning."
"I didn't want to wash your smell away," I admit. "I'm going to miss you today." Letting out a dramatic sigh, I turn to face him.
"I'll wander the hallways all alone." I'm teasing, but doesn't every joke have a grain of truth? Sawyer's fingers brush across my hips, and he pulls me to him.
"Is he picking you up?" I ask because I didn't make him anything to eat. Luke is Sawyer's only employee and knows how to do just about everything—and he does.
"I have him handling a few things for me today, but you can always call him."
I've always lived in the city, but Sawyer doesn't like when I take random rides or that one time I tried to ride the bus. He scooped me right up within minutes of landing in New York, and he believes someone else might do the same. I think he's joking about that, but I could be wrong.
"Here, let me get you a plate. Oh, and I sat your coffee there." I point to the travel mug so he can take it with him. "Are you excited about today?"
"Excited?" He chuckles.
"I mean, if you take Paul's feelings on this whole thing out of it."
"I don't care how Paul feels. He needs to grow up."
"He's getting married. That might help." I set the plate down in front of one of the chairs at the kitchen island and turn it so the heart pancakes face out.
"Come eat with me."
"Let me make a plate," I start to say but he snags me around the waist and lifts me to sit on the island.
"We can share." He offers me a bite of bacon, and I take it, unable to resist both bacon and Sawyer. He's trying to distract me from talking about Paul. His temper has gotten short with him over time, but all I want is for everyone to get along.
"His fiancée is really sweet." Sawyer shrugs, bringing a piece of pancake to my mouth. "You have to eat some too."
"What are your plans today?" Seems like I'm not the only one avoiding a subject.
"Maybe I'll call Kelly." I bring the topic of Paul's fiancée right back. "She asked me if I wanted to go to her dress fitting."
"Bet you'd be gorgeous in a wedding dress." His lips turn up in a half smile.
"Someone had no patience." I roll my eyes, but I'm not the least bit sorry that we eloped.
"I wish I could say I regret it, but I couldn't wait, kitten." He takes a big bite of his pancake and grins at me.
"You know I don't mind that I didn't have a wedding. I love how all of it was a whirlwind and how badly you wanted your ring on my finger." Sawyer leans in to buss me, and right then his phone rings.
At first he ignores it, but as soon as it stops, it starts again. He mutters a curse under his breath, and when he pulls it out, I see Bruce's name on the screen.
"So it begins," Sawyer mutters under his breath. "I better get going."
There's no time for me to ask him what's wrong before he drops another buss on my lips and rushes out the door.
...
SAWYER
Staring down at my watch I shake my wrist to make sure it's not broken. It's also possible time has stopped moving and I'm stuck for the rest of my life.
"Come on, it's only been an hour." Luke comes up beside me and passes me a liquor. "I'll have you out of here soon."
"Not soon enough," I grumble just loud enough for him to hear.
"It's his bachelor party." Luke takes a drink of his liquor, and I roll my eyes.
"No it's not. That was last weekend in Vegas. Or did you forget about the call from the hotel manager at three in the morning?"
"You're right. It's his bachelor..." Luke stops to think about what exactly this is. "Cocktail hour?"
"Then we're in agreement. I've been here long enough."
Luke grins as he takes another drink and we watch Paul continue to make a fool of himself.
Thankfully, I'd gotten out of the bachelor weekend with the excuse of work. Although deep down, I don't think Paul was too upset I couldn't make it. He went with two of our old poker buddies that I don't care for and a couple of his friends I outright detest. But tonight's event is hosted by the firm as an olive branch. Bruce wanted to bring Paul around since it's been a few weeks since he issued his forced statement and thought it would be a good chance for Paul to make amends.
Oh, how wrong he was.
Paul showed up tonight already hammered and has since been gloating loudly about all his business endeavors since taking time away from the firm. Meanwhile I'm swamped with all the new business, and tonight I'm once again taken away from Chloe because of work.
"He won't even know I'm gone," I say, but just then Paul looks over, and his glassy red eyes lock on me.
"Looks like he's coming to say hi." Luke pretends to wave at someone else and then walks away, leaving me to deal with Paul on my own.
"Coward," I hiss at his retreating back right before Paul puts his arm over my shoulder. He reeks of whiskey and something sour as he leans in close.
"Look at all of them." He raises his nearly empty glass and indicates all the people in the restaurant.
The firm rented the whole place for tonight, so everyone that's part of the financial firm came. I'm beginning to wonder if they were all told this was mandatory.
"Yep. That's all of them," I agree and try not to let Paul's wobbly weight make me lose my footing.
"They'll all be answering to me. Just you wait." His last words are slurred like he's been drinking all day, and from the smell of him, he probably has.
"Absolutely," I agree again, doing what I can to placate him. The last thing I want to do is start an argument.
I've already felt bad enough today when I had to call Chloe at the last minute and tell her I wouldn't be home for dinner. I totally forgot this was tonight, and I knew after skipping out on the bachelor party I couldn't do the same now. How did I pick making my wife unhappy over Paul?
Reminding myself that this is her family helps me calm down. Gritting my teeth and not being a jerk is the least I can do for my bride. She's my entire world, and if playing nice makes her life easier, then so be it. She was more than understanding, but I know her well enough to catch even the smallest hint of disappointment.
"You missed an epic time in Vegas." He pokes me in the ribs and blinks slowly. "They don't make women like that here."
"Hmm," I answer noncommittally.
"Willing and waiting. Am I right?" He pokes me again, and I take the chance to pull away from under his arm.
"I wouldn't know, I've never been."
"Oh that's right. You ran off with Flowy." He waves dismissively with his fingers as he purposely says her name wrong. "Guess I don't blame you there, I wouldn't want to waste what little money her mother had on a wedding."
"What?" The word comes out of me like a threat, and I have to breathe. He's wasted and talking nonsense.
"I mean, Dad's loaded, but you'll bet it's locked up tight. That's the only way to keep them these days." He's leaning closer to me like he's telling me a secret, and I'm beginning to realize how repulsed I am by him. "Got Kelly to sign on the dotted line." Somehow his laugh sounds as slurred as his words. "She had no idea. Don't think she read it. Oh well."
"Sounds like a great way to start a marriage," I say without filtering myself and half hoping Paul is too drunk for my words to register. Too bad luck isn't on my side.
"What did you just say to me?" His glassy red eyes narrow, and he curls his lip.
"Nothing." I take a drink of my liquor and try to keep my mouth shut. It's not worth it. He's not worth it.
"You think you're hot, don't you? So smug." He raises his own glass to take a drink but then realizes it's empty. He slams the glass down on the bar beside us and calls for another.
It's really a shame the service is so good because he's brought a refill at an alarming speed.
"No, I don't think I'm hot because I'm honest with my wife."
"Wife?" He huffs a laugh before downing half the whiskey. "One word from me and she'll be finished with you."
"Are you threatening me?"
Excited sounds come from beside us, and I turn to see Chloe walking in the doors of the restaurant. She looks gorgeous in a figure-hugging black dress as she comes in and says hello to the employees she knows.
A few of them she greets with hugs and then she sees me at the bar. When our eyes lock, all of the anger and frustration that was building up melts away. There she is, my girl. Always and forever my calm in the storm.
"Perfect timing. About time she knew the truth," I heard Paul say.
...
CHLOE
I hadn't planned to come tonight, but I missed Sawyer so much. It was hard to mask the hurt that hit me when he told me he wouldn't be making it home for dinner. I had a whole night planned out for us and was working on it all day.
He's been busy these past few weeks so I wanted to do something special. My husband has always been more than perfect and he's given me a fairytale the last three and a half years. I'm not going to guilt him over working so hard.
I thought it wouldn't hurt to stop by since I know a lot of the employees. That feeling is confirmed when I spot Sawyer across the room. Excitement bubbles in my chest when he realizes it's me and his eyes light up. He's never been one to hide his affection, and it's never mattered who was around.
When I put on this little black dress, I was hoping it might get me into a bit of trouble. My plan is to lure him away early. It covers more than the outfit I planned on wearing when he got home tonight, which was only an apron.
"Chloe, didn't think I'd see you here tonight," Luke says and then gives me a peck on the cheek.
He's my favorite of my husband's friends and one of the only ones he spends time with. None of the other men that he used to play poker with ever come around. That's why I'm surprised to see them all here, but I guess it's Paul's bachelor party so it makes sense. Sawyer stopped going to poker night after we got married.
"I thought I'd swing by and say hi."
"Sawyer will be happy. He's in a bad mood."
"Oh, what's—"
"Hey sis." Paul throws his arm around Luke's shoulder, who immediately shrugs it off. Then Paul sways on his feet.
"Hi, Paul. How is the party?" I keep the smile pasted on my face to be polite, but he's the reason Sawyer had to take over for the company.
"About to get a whole lot better."
"Paul." Sawyer's hand comes down on his shoulder and Paul flinches. Some of the liquid in his glass spills out, and I'm guessing things are still bad between the two of them. "Don't." The warning in Sawyer's tone is clear.
"Is everything okay?" I ask because the tension is heavy.
"No it's not. Your husband—" The word slips off his tongue with utter distaste.
"I'm warning you." The hand Sawyer has on Paul's shoulder squeezes.
Paul lets out a yelp and jerks out of Sawyer's hold, then splashes more of his drink onto the floor. I take a step back so it doesn't land on my heels.
"Oh you don't want her to know what you did?" Paul smirks, but Sawyer looks murderous. "That you're no better than the rest of us?"
"What?" I push, wanting to know what is going on.
"We're leaving."
Sawyer shoves Paul back, and he stumbles before bumping into Luke. Luke manages to save him from falling down.
"He banged you on a bet," Paul blurts out loud enough for the entire restaurant to hear. | LEARN_MORE | https://a.crazynovelapp.com/ad/TXlsaWIvMTczODczLzI | 149788454881544 | Cra0004 | https://facebook.com/61552123302606 | 47 | 1 | 958,084,282,462,144 | 2024-05-11 02:00 | person_profile | eligible | 0 | 0 | NONE | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | Learn more | 0 | Cra0004 | 120210317058350400 | a.crazynovelapp.com | NONE | video | https://a.crazynovelapp.com/ad/TXlsaWIvMTczODczLzIwMjQwNTA5MTkyMTU5L3BhZ2U=?adid={{ad.id}} | 2024-05-09 06:26 | https://scontent-iad3-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/440793744_796072422160359_180924380745031525_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_s60x60&_nc_cat=109&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=LD9AP34D_osQ7kNvgGGFSWv&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-2.xx&oh=00_AYC8XNgNf45gUl5dmilYKyEq8-sk_YP6k805T-Ye76sxsA&oe=6645F4CD | person_profile | 0 | Cra0004 | https://scontent-iad3-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/441537317_324727503773423_7489345692736289790_n.jpg?_nc_cat=109&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=IjmPJmjGYSIQ7kNvgEMl52D&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-2.xx&oh=00_AYClJOP6QbwywVlZO9ugQIqHhPIxIu-jX0BP3dPnlNcn7w&oe=6645E5C5 | 0 | 3 | Cra0004 | 0 | 0 | 2024-05-11 02:00 | View Edit Delete

Let's go. I can hardly wait." | LEARN_MORE | https://www.yumread.com/share/middle/hi4orr0xtkbxs | 119497494574812 | Lereader-Great Novel | https://facebook.com/61550087387871 | 205 | 4 | 1,143,496,190,004,787 | 2024-05-11 02:00 | person_profile | eligible | 0 | 0 | NONE | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 | Learn more | 0 | Lereader-Great Novel | 120208121473420449 | www.yumread.com | NONE | video | https://www.yumread.com/share/middle/hi4orr0xtkbxsaqtqgsdgqx3?ad_id={{ad.id}}&sid=120208121456700449&campaign={{campaign.name}}&adgroup={{adset.name}} | 2024-05-11 01:45 | https://scontent-iad3-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/440940371_752528020427271_6764703034426752805_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_s60x60&_nc_cat=109&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=gwp5Mw4lmfYQ7kNvgGtgJ3f&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-2.xx&oh=00_AYBgsk3lTp26SDvkJ4frD0OGLIBlggUiyl23vvWT215qXQ&oe=6645D35E | person_profile | 0 | Lereader-Great Novel | https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/440943932_1173022627381077_488616291518091548_n.jpg?_nc_cat=107&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=2D6rFUoqUtAQ7kNvgGSa73v&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-1.xx&oh=00_AYBnjPylr7FCp5Liv1tj1VZre3RHnNYIdU0s0wN5FQnF6w&oe=6645E1FD | 0 | 3 | Lereader-Great Novel | 0 | 0 | 2024-05-11 02:00 | View Edit Delete

Let's go. I can hardly wait." | LEARN_MORE | https://www.yumread.com/share/middle/hi4orr0xtkbxs | 119497494574812 | Lereader-Great Novel | https://facebook.com/61550087387871 | 205 | 1 | 1,601,316,257,313,633 | 2024-05-11 02:00 | person_profile | eligible | 0 | 0 | NONE | 0 | 1 | 1 | 0 | Learn more | 0 | Lereader-Great Novel | 120208121469950449 | www.yumread.com | NONE | video | https://www.yumread.com/share/middle/hi4orr0xtkbxsaqtqgsdgqx3?ad_id={{ad.id}}&sid=120208121455770449&campaign={{campaign.name}}&adgroup={{adset.name}} | 2024-05-11 01:45 | https://scontent-iad3-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/440860598_1300479414241138_242439637103122507_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_s60x60&_nc_cat=103&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=USdNgron6VQQ7kNvgGgQKJe&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-2.xx&oh=00_AYBs9kddyomx3Zo4OkNc1PPXNKQ_ny5DoLe5iCzXa5CJlQ&oe=6645E3BD | person_profile | 0 | Lereader-Great Novel | https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/442386845_1636060990479719_3649907449510930557_n.jpg?_nc_cat=102&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=sX1TNuXHmbkQ7kNvgEtf9HU&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-1.xx&oh=00_AYBtMChKZGEMpSaIK0lS9-ZEEzDcPV3BkLtj-YZERDabUg&oe=6645F9DF | 0 | 3 | Lereader-Great Novel | 0 | 0 | 2024-05-11 02:00 | View Edit Delete
