💔🔞Click to read the full novel👉👉👉 | As soon as I slipped into my swimsuit, a group of shirtless football players immediately surrounded me. I glanced around and noticed everyone was staring at me intently. What was going on? Moments later, the guys started speaking up all at once, almost competing to talk to me. “Whoa, your body is amazing for someone who’s supposed to be plain!” “Seriously, looking at you makes me want to take you out…” “Hey, would you go on a date with me?” ----------- "You want a recommendation letter to Harvard Medical School? Fine. Marry the dying Alpha from the Hartling family in place of my daughter!" I remained silent for a moment before softly replying, "Deal." ***** A black car silently whisked me into the Hartling Manor. Regina Hartling's delicate teacup fell to the ground the moment she saw me. I understood why. To Regina, I must have looked hideous. My blonde hair was carelessly tied up, and my face smeared with powder, making my skin rough and spotty. My lips were dry and cracked, devoid of any color. Only my blue eyes retained some semblance of attractiveness. "What is the Bermond family playing at? My son's fiancée is Kesha, and now they send a bad daughter! Are they deliberately trying to humiliate him?" "Wait a second," I interrupted her accusations. "May I use the restroom?" Regina paused, her anger seeming to lessen. I knew what calmed her down. Many people said my voice was crisp and pleasant, like a songbird's. At the butler Benson's gesture, I walked into the restroom and closed the door. I took out the best dress my mother made for me before she died—a sapphire blue gown. I lovingly touched the silk fabric and changed into it. Then, I carefully washed the powder off my face, let my hair down, and looked at myself in the mirror, satisfied with the transformation, before stepping out. Hearing my footsteps, Regina looked up. Instantly, I saw amazement in her eyes. I took a deep breath and tried to present my best self. My master always said I had a healthy complexion, sunlit golden hair, and blue eyes as stunning as the sea. "My name is Kylia Bermond, Leo Bermond's illegitimate daughter. My status is indeed quite a disgrace," I said honestly. "Kesha ran away. She didn't want to marry Mr. Hartling, but I do." Regina fell silent for a while. Finally, she spoke, "Then go upstairs and check on my son before you decide if you want to stay." I smiled immediately, knowing that I had won. To become a doctor, even if her son stopped breathing the next second, I would happily marry him. ***** Soon, Benson led me to meet my future husband, Herbert Hartling. Moonlight streamed through the windows, casting a dappled glow on the bed where a handsome man with brown hair lay quietly. His pale complexion couldn't hide his chiseled features. Even in his sleep, the aura of a top Alpha was overwhelming, radiating intense attraction. I was momentarily stunned. After a long while, I walked to the bed and softly said, "Hi, I'm Kylia Bermond." The man remained motionless, his beautiful face showing no reaction, his brows furrowed. I looked at the medical instruments beside the bed and sighed, "Pity. Your time is running out." The instruments indicated his organs were slowly failing, though he still looked strong on the outside. I thought for a while and added, "Maybe I can help you live a bit longer... Let me tell you a secret, I'm the future Moon Priest." And my master is the current Moon Priest. "I'm twenty-one, young, academically gifted, and trained by the priests since little. Now, I want to study medicine." I listed my virtues. "Marrying me isn't a loss for you. So, do you want to marry me? If you remain silent, I'll take that as a yes." I talked to Herbert for a long time, but he remained unresponsive. His hands lay quietly on the sheet, his fingers long and slightly curved as if he was expecting something. I skipped downstairs, seeing Regina still waiting on the sofa. "I've decided." I didn't let the unfortunate mother wait any longer and continued, "I'm staying to marry your son!" Regina finally relaxed, a smile spreading across her face. "Very well, from now on, you are Herbert's wife." She looked happy, and so did I. We gazed at each other, feeling a sudden closeness. "My name is Regina Hartling. Could I call you Kylia from now on?" She then took out a card from her bag and handed it to me. "I noticed you didn't bring much luggage. Here's 500 thousand dollars for your pocket money." Five hundred thousand just for pocket money? I took the card, surprised. "Thank you... Mom?" Regina was startled by my sudden address. Her eyes widened, and her mouth opened slightly, looking cute and funny. I couldn't help but laugh, running back to my room, feeling a hint of warmth surge in my heart. Since my mother passed away, I hadn't felt maternal care for a long time. "Your mom is so nice. I believe we'll get along well!" Returning to my room, I excitedly told the still-sleeping Herbert. He continued to sleep, his eyelids scarred, marring his perfect face. I heard he was in a severe car accident. Before falling into a coma, he lost feeling in his legs and went blind. For an Alpha, this must be a huge blow. "May the Moon Goddess bless you... Let me give you a full check-up." I gently lifted the blanket and couldn't resist pinching his cheek. "Hmm, your skin feels pretty good, nice and smooth." Even after being sick for so long, his body remained fit, with well-defined muscles. His chest and abs were particularly impressive, and I couldn't help but touch them. My gaze finally landed on his legs. I tapped lightly and then harder on them, but there was no response. After completing the check-up, I was lost in thought. "So, it turns out that werewolves and humans aren't that different physiologically." "I heard you have companion beasts. Where's yours?" Was it gone because of his severe injuries? Without his companion beast, this werewolf surely wouldn't live long. I sighed, touching my chin, "I didn't expect to become a widow at twenty-one." I lamented for a second before turning to the bathroom to freshen up. After changing into a comfortable old nightgown, I lay down beside Herbert without hesitation. "Good night, honey." The next morning, I woke up rubbing my sleepy eyes, only to find myself wrapped around Herbert like an octopus. Worse, there seemed to be five finger-shaped red marks on his face! Embarrassed, I scrambled off him and hastily covered his face with the blanket. Later, I found out that Herbert was aware even in his coma. At this moment, he felt a shadow over his face, but a scent that drove him crazy wafted into his nose! He remained motionless, his only giveaway being the slight rise and fall of his chest, betraying his unsettled state. ***** Before heading downstairs for breakfast, I made myself look ugly again through makeup. I thought Regina might ask why, but she said nothing. I guessed she must have concocted some family feud drama in her mind. After all, in her eyes, I was a bad daughter sent to the countryside by the Bermond family and had endured many hardships. When she learned I had applied to Harvard Medical School, Regina was very supportive. When she heard that I hadn't finished high school, she immediately arranged for me to attend a preparatory class. The Bermond family driver dropped me off at the school gate. Before I even walked into the classroom, I heard a familiar voice coming from inside. "You mean my new sister? She applied to Harvard Medical School with a recommendation letter my mom wrote. It's nice, though. If we go to the same school, I can look after her. She's lived in the countryside and doesn't understand much." It was Kesha. Oh, right. Kesha's mother, Andrea Bermond, was a Harvard alum, so Kesha would apply, too. "How could she have the nerve to ask your mom for a recommendation? She's just a nobody! Kesha, you and your mom are too kind. If it were me, I couldn't stand being classmates with such a bumpkin!" Another girl's voice was harsh and cutting. I walked into the classroom with an expressionless face and took an empty seat, ignoring the comments around me. "Sis, you're here!" Kesha keenly spotted me, and she raised her voice, successfully drawing everyone's attention to me. In an instant, various malicious glances and taunts bombarded me. "So this is Kesha's sister? How did she turn out so ugly?" "Isn't that typical for country folk? Fat and plain? Haha." "As ugly as a crocodile! Look at her skin!" "What kind of outdated glasses is she wearing? So ugly!" I continued to ignore them as if they weren't talking about me. The boldest of the group, the girl talking to Kesha, walked up and kicked my desk, causing the pen I had just taken out to fall to the floor. "Hey, bumpkin, I'm Laura Ventis. Don't you know how to greet your classmates?" I slowly stood up, walked to the desk, and bent down to pick up my pen. Laura went further, stepping on the pen and grinding it under her foot. "Are you dumb? Can't you speak?" "I can, but I don't want to talk to you," I said calmly. The class fell silent for a few seconds, seemingly captivated by my melodious voice. A boy sitting in the front row with his legs up suddenly stood. "Enough. Stop bullying her." Laura immediately turned and glared at him. "Oscar, why are you defending this bumpkin?" From the surrounding chatter, I quickly learned all the rumors about Oscar Brooks, who seemed quite popular. He was also Kesha and Laura's high school classmate, the captain of the football team, rich and handsome. Laura had had a crush on him for a long time. Jealous of Oscar defending me, Laura grabbed my glasses and smashed them underfoot! I stared coldly at her. Then, I struck swiftly, grabbing her shoulder and pinning her against the wall forcefully before she could react. "Stop!" A stern female voice rang out. Our teacher, Sarah, walked into the classroom, catching me pinning Laura against the wall. She asked in shock, "What are you doing?" I released Laura, turned, and went back to my seat, letting her slide down the wall like a broken puppet. Sarah examined Laura briefly, finding no injuries, and sent her back to her seat. "All right, it's class time. Be quiet! Get along with your classmates, understood?" I acted as if nothing had happened, attentively listening to the lesson. However, I became more vigilant in secret. I had met many people like Laura. How could she possibly swallow this humiliation? After school, I was heading down the stairs when a group of students blocked my way. I looked up and noticed that there were ten of them. Leading them was Laura, a cigarette hanging from her mouth. "Where do you think you're going? We still have unfinished business!" When I didn't answer, Laura smirked, taking the cigarette out and slapping my face lightly. "Why aren't you talking? Weren't you tough earlier?" I suddenly charged at her. As she dodged, I slipped past her and quickly ran into the nearest restroom. I didn't have time to block the door, so I hid in one of the stalls instead. No matter how hard Laura and her group banged on the door, I held it shut with all my strength. "You'd better stay in there forever!" Laura's furious yelling made the door vibrate. One of them poured a bucket of water into the stall, drenching me from head to toe. Several more buckets of icy cold water followed, accompanied by their filthy, venomous curses. I clenched my fists. Though they were ten, I knew Laura was the true enemy. I would make her pay! I wasn't sure how long it took, but they eventually got bored and locked the restroom door before leaving. I waited a while longer until most students had left the school before coming out. Looking in the mirror, I saw that the powder on my face had washed off, leaving streaks of black water marks. I had to wash off all the ugly makeup and let my half-dry blonde hair fall over my shoulders before leaving the stinking place. ***** Oscar's POV: I was smoking with a few friends in the parking lot. Leaning against my Lamborghini, I deliberately rolled my sleeves up to my shoulders, showing off my well-toned muscles. No man worked out hard without wanting to show it off. We were chatting about the football game when I glanced sideways and noticed a girl passing by. She must have felt my gaze because her blue eyes flicked over. But then, she walked straight to the bus stop at the north gate as if I didn't exist. I squinted, feeling both surprised and delighted. How had I never noticed there was such a pretty girl at school? Especially those blue eyes, as pretty as the ocean. "What are you staring at so intently?" Another guy followed my gaze, seeing only the girl's back. "Isn't that the bumpkin?" "Really?" I was startled. The figure indeed resembled Kylia, but why the face was completely different? Kylia's POV: An hour and a half later, I finally returned to the Hartling Manor atop the hill. "Kylia, you're back? Come and try this," Regina called, excitedly setting out freshly baked pastries, the aroma tantalizing. "Okay, I'll go up and get changed first." After changing, I sat on the sofa and took the pastry Regina handed me. "Thanks, Mom." Regina smiled warmly. I liked her a lot and had grown accustomed to calling her "Mom" over the past few days, and she happily accepted the title. After dinner, I returned to my room to continue checking on Herbert. The instruments showed that the data of his condition was still worrying. If he died, Regina... Mom would be heartbroken. I looked at his flawless face, feeling sympathetic. "Be good and wait a bit longer, okay? I'll give you a treatment after my bath." Ten minutes later, I came out of the bathroom, wearing a new nightgown Regina had given me and drying my hair. I later learned that although Herbert couldn't see anything, my scent kept filling his nose. Especially after a bath, my fragrance permeated the room. He told me I smelled as fresh as the morning breeze and as sweet as lilies blooming with dew. For an Alpha werewolf, my scent was a deadly temptation. Unaware, I walked to Herbert, touched his face, and checked his legs. "Your muscles will atrophy if you lie in bed too long. Let me give you a massage. When you wake up, don't forget that you have an amazing wife who's not only a superb priest but also a great doctor." While massaging Herbert, I boasted about myself. After the leg massage, I rummaged through my small suitcase. I remembered my master had given me some medicine. He was a Moon Priest and also a learned, daring, and enthusiastic... alchemist. I found a bottle of medicine, opened it, and told Herbert irresponsibly, "Since human medicine can't save you now, let's try something else, okay?" Of course, Herbert couldn't answer. Sleeping soundly, his brow was furrowed, and his lips were dry from dehydration. I poured a pill from the bottle. My master had said this medicine couldn't touch metal, and I had to feed it to him mouth-to-mouth. But wasn't that essentially kissing? I didn't have much kissing experience. Since receiving the priest's inheritance at ten, I'd devoted all my energy to studying, leaving no time for romance. My master was an old bachelor, a beta werewolf. Unlike alphas and omegas, betas didn't have reproductive duties. In the past, when we watched movies, we always wondered why every movie had to have kissing scenes. Now, I took a sip of water, tossed the pill into my mouth, and leaned down to press my lips against Herbert's. I pried his lips open and tried to use my tongue to push the pill into his mouth... But it didn't go smoothly. The water spilled from his mouth, nothing like the romantic scenes in movies. "Oh, sorry, I'll get better next time." Clumsily, I wiped his mouth with a tissue. Despite being asleep, Herbert seemed uncomfortable after this mess, his brows furrowing more. Feeling guilty, I gently pressed his throat to ensure he swallowed the pill before climbing into bed and falling asleep. The next morning, I woke up early, ready to start my revenge plan. I searched around the Hartling Manor and finally found some burlap sacks in a storage room. I picked a suitable one, stuffed it into my backpack, and headed to school. In the classroom, I heard some girls in the back describing my embarrassing ordeal yesterday, their laughter grating. Ignoring their taunts, I walked to my seat and pretended not to hear them. As soon as I sat down, Oscar came over and knocked on my desk. Looking up, I first noticed his thick brown hair and beautiful chocolate eyes. Then, I saw the row of piercings on his right ear. Ouch, that must hurt. "Do you need something?" "Come with me," he said, turning and walking out. I hesitated for a couple of seconds, but since he had spoken up for me yesterday, I decided to follow him. As soon as I reached the corner, Oscar placed his arm against the wall beside me, trapping me between them. He leaned down, staring at me intently. "Last night, I saw you in the parking lot. You looked different... What's with your face?" Last night? I quickly recalled seeing some familiar guys in the parking lot. They were my classmates? Oscar waited patiently for my answer. "I don't want to tell you." Oscar clearly didn't expect this. His face darkened immediately. "You..." He might have wanted to curse me, but why should he? Just because I didn't want to share my private matters? I knew he was just the type who was spoiled by girls' attention. Ignoring his swinging mood, I pushed him aside and returned to the classroom. The room was still filled with mockery and gossip about me. During the break, Laura asked Kesha to join her in the restroom. Kesha was on the phone and shook her head to decline. Watching Laura walk away alone, I followed her quietly. I saw her enter the restroom and glanced around. Fortunately, nobody noticed us. This was my chance for revenge! Without hesitation, I pulled the burlap sack from my backpack, walked into the restroom, and threw it over Laura's head while she was washing her hands! Trapped in the sack, Laura struggled and screamed. I shoved her, and she fell to the ground. I hadn't realized how weak Laura was. No wonder she needed ten people to bully me. "Who are you? Let me out, or I'll kill you!" Ignoring her threats, I straddled her and started punching the sack. Having learned human anatomy from my master, I knew where to hit to cause pain without serious injury. Each punch made Laura scream in agony. Soon, her voice became hoarse, and she stopped resisting, lying motionless on the floor. I dragged her into a stall, locked the door, and left as if nothing had happened. Despite breaking a sweat, I felt elated. Now, only the mastermind Kesha remained. While I was lost in thought, Kesha happened to approach me in the hallway. With just the two of us there, she dropped her facade, her face turning mean. "Dad's back. He wants me to bring you home to meet him and Grandma! Honestly, why don't you even have a car? Don't dirty mine!" I didn't want to call that man "Dad" or meet Kesha's grandmother, even if they were my blood relatives. I had never seen him since birth. When I brought news of my mother's death to him, his wife met me instead. She wanted me to marry Herbert in place of Kesha and, in return, would help me get a recommendation for Harvard Medical School. I looked at Kesha's face. She resembled her mother a lot, her expression now the same as when her mother proposed the deal. Suddenly, I realized this was another chance for revenge! Kesha's car was a silver Porsche. I walked over to the passenger seat and discreetly took a pill from my pocket, chewing it up. As I got into the car, I pretended to search for something in my bag, and a small pouch "accidentally" slipped into the seat crevice. Moments later, a sudden foul stench filled the car! Kesha, who was touching up her makeup in the mirror, immediately covered her nose and mouth, overwhelmed by the smell. "What is that smell? It's disgusting!" I calmly sat in my seat, ignoring her. This was the Stinky Bomb, an invention of my master, and it worked wonders. "Is it you... Kylia! Why do you smell so bad?" Kesha was nearly passing out from the stench, her lipstick smearing across her face, making her look like a clown. I watched her struggle for a while until my anger subsided. Then, I opened the car door and stepped out. As soon as the door opened, Kesha gasped for fresh air, finally recovering. She glared at me furiously. "You wretched being! Your mother was just as bad..." "My mother knew him before your mother did," I interrupted coldly. "I have fulfilled my part of the deal by marrying Herbert. Our transaction is complete. I hope you and your family will leave me alone from now on!" I turned away, biting my lip to hold back my tears. I just... wanted to know if that man had any lingering affection for my mother. ***** Regina's POV: The family doctor was checking on Herbert as usual, and I stayed close by, afraid of hearing any bad news. However, this time, the doctor's face showed surprise after the examination. "Mrs. Hartling, did you get a new doctor for Mr. Hartling?" "No, you've always been in charge of Herbert's condition. Why? Is his condition worsening?" "No, quite the opposite. Mr. Hartling's condition has improved. He could wake up any moment!" "Are you serious?" I grabbed the doctor's hand excitedly. The doctor nodded confidently. "He is still in a coma, but he should be conscious." "Wonderful! Herbert, can you hear me?" After the doctor left, I paced the living room with joy bubbling inside me like champagne. "Moon Goddess, could it be that marrying Kylia caused Herbert's sudden improvement? It must be! Kylia is a lucky charm sent by the Moon Goddess for Herbert! I need to buy her some gifts right away!" I spoke excitedly to myself, rushing towards the door. ***** Kylia's POV: After school, I walked home alone, my shadow stretching long in the sunset. A black car stopped in front of me, and the window rolled down to reveal Benson's smiling face. "Kylia, Mrs. Hartling asked me to bring you home." Home? Right, I had a home now. A warm feeling spread through me as I silently got into the car, watching the scenery fly by outside. Back at the Hartling Manor, I noticed Benson smiling even more than usual, making me curious. "Benson, did something happen?" "Kylia, you're back? Come inside!" Before Benson could answer, Regina's joyful voice rang out. Benson gave me a mysterious smile, gesturing for me to go see for myself. I walked into the living room, curious, and saw Regina humming a tune as she organized clothes on the rack. The entire living room was filled with hundreds of clothing racks, each holding beautiful dresses! "Mom..." I was stunned. What was happening? "Kylia!" Regina twirled like a little girl, pulling me to the racks. "Look at these! Do you like them? We're hosting a family banquet soon, and this is your first time presenting yourself as Herbert's wife. So, I prepared some dresses for you!" I nodded and understood the situation, though I was shocked by the sheer number of "some" dresses. Regina blinked at me. "Well, why don't you try one on?" I took one of the dresses she had carefully chosen, changed into it, and walked out of the room. "You look beautiful!" Regina walked over, taking my hand, her expression first delighted but then a bit troubled. "Kylia, could you wash off the makeup on your face for the banquet?" I looked at her, and Regina explained sincerely. "It's not that I dislike it. I just want everyone to see you at your best. Since Herbert's accident, the Bermond family has been unstable..." I understood. My master and I had seen similar family conflicts in movies. I nodded quickly. "Mom, don't worry. I understand." Regina sighed in relief, even more pleased. "Kylia, you truly are our family's lucky charm! Since marrying Herbert, his condition has improved!" "Did the doctor say that?" My eyes brightened. Could it be that the pill from my master was working? Regina nodded vigorously. "The doctor said his organs have stopped deteriorating, and his heartbeat is stable. He'll wake up soon!" | INSTALL_MOBILE_APP | http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.d | Personalized reading | https://www.facebook.com/61558590428555/ | 22 | 0 | 0 | 1969-12-31 18:00 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | Install now | 0 | play.google.com | IMAGE | http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dreame.reader | 1969-12-31 18:00 | https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/461422056_3768115766760620_2945866619168824926_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_s60x60&_nc_cat=108&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=fgZ1lOBGyhwQ7kNvgFLf4o6&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-1.xx&oh=00_AYB0BEPlj5vw101X6E4msnDFcuGkU7fFSlD1Znw8jr8bsA&oe=66FD10F3 | PERSON_PROFILE | 0 | 0 | 0 | Personalized reading | 0 | 0 | 1969-12-31 18:00 | View Edit Delete

Yes | 2024-09-27 19:15 | active | 1545 | 0 | 🔥🔥 Click to Read 👉🏻👉🏻 | That doesn't help, Michael. You chose to collude with her to keep a secret from me. From your wife. You were keeping a secret with another woman. How long have you been... how long have you been seeing her?" He looked shocked. "I'm not. We're not. It's not like that, honey." "Ah. The beginning of Michael and Linda. The beginning of you choosing another woman over me." "I didn't choose her over you. Suze, Linda's your best friend." "No, she's not. Not if she could treat me like this. Not if she was luring my husband away from me." __________ I sighed, and began putting the stew in a Tupperware container. Despite it being Saturday, my husband had been at work all day. He'd been working so many extra hours lately, I felt like I never saw him. Being at home with nothing to do but keeping house, cooking and sewing got lonely. My friends were busy with their children, but Michael and I hadn't been so blessed yet even though we'd been married four years. It'd been terribly discouraging and between the long-time disappointment of not having children and the more recent disappointment of my husband never being home, I was at odds as to what I could do to help my spirits along. I needed something more than volunteering at church on three different committees. In desperation, I'd secretly become an Avon lady. Ding, Dong, Avon calling! Somehow, even though Michael had always told me that he didn't want me working because I could do the most good in our home, I'd discovered that I not only loved selling Avon, but I was actually good at it. For the last four months of the six I'd been selling it, I was in the top three for my district. I made my calls during the day and still hadn't told Michael. That was because I was saving all the money I made to buy him a used Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He'd always dreamed of owning one, and I'd thought I could help that along by earning the down payment for one. So far, I had a nice little nest egg saved, and I'd been extremely frugal with my grocery allowance and pin money Michael gave me each week, which allowed me to put anything leftover into the Harley fund. Even if I couldn't have my dream of children yet, Michael could have his dream of a motorcycle. My husband worked hard, and he deserved to have some fun. With the stew in the refrigerator, and not knowing when Michael was coming home since he wasn't answering his phone at work, I felt completely at odds and didn't feel like sitting down with the mending. Sighing, I decided to give my best friend Linda a call. She'd withdrawn more and more from me in the seven months since her husband had been killed in Korea -- right before he was supposed to come home. But despite her pushing me away, I still reached out and called her, trying to get through to Linda in her grief. I'd had her over to our house often at first to get her out of her house, but I think seeing me so happy with Michael hurt her, and she grew even more distant with me. Maybe she'd be willing to come over more often if she realized Michael wasn't home, which seemed to be the norm now instead of the exception. I was hoping she'd eventually meet someone who would help spark her interest in life again because she was honestly one of the most beautiful women I knew with her lush brown hair and hourglass figure. Her phone rang once, twice -- "Hello?" she said. "Hi, Linda, it's Susan. How are you?" "Um, fine --" Then I heard a voice in the background. "Just finished painting the garage, Linda. Smells good in here. Dinner ready yet? Oh, sorry -- didn't realize you were on the phone." I knew that voice. "Is that...Michael?" I asked her. Swallowing hard, I gripped the phone tighter, waiting for her to confirm what I already knew. That was my husband's voice, the dead giveaway his deep, southern drawl that you didn't typically hear up here in the Midwest. My husband was over at Linda's, painting her garage, which meant he'd been over there a while. No wonder he hadn't answered his phone at work. And he was planning on having dinner with her. I won't be home for dinner tonight, Suze. I'm working late. It's going to be another late night, honey. Go ahead and eat without me. I'm not getting out of here anytime soon. From there, it didn't take me long to figure out that Linda had begun to distance herself around the same time that Michael had begun working late. Linda sucked in a breath and hung up on me, and I didn't bother calling her back. Since Michael had our car, I couldn't exactly go running to the other side of town where she lived and confront the two of them. Instead, I sat on the couch and waited for Michael to come home. The grandfather clock Michael's parents gave us for our wedding present was the only noise in the quiet house as I waited for my husband to come home. Tick tock. Tick tock. Seven chimes. Tick tock. Tick tock. Eight chimes. Lights turned into our driveway at eight fourteen. Minutes later, Michael walked in the side door. "Suze?" he called out. I didn't answer. Let him look for me. He walked into the living room, and almost startled when he realized I was in the dim room without a light on. "Suze? Honey?" He switched on the lamp. "Why are you sitting here in the dark? Are you OK?" "Just thinking," I said absently. He sat beside me on the couch, and when his legs would have touched me, I moved mine aside. I'd come to some conclusions when he hadn't come home for more than two hours after I'd called. "How was work?" Now that I knew, I didn't miss the hesitation. How many hesitations had I missed over the last months? When had this started? Why had he started this? "It was work," he said. "Got a lot done." I suppose painting a garage was work and if he finished it, then yes, he got a lot done. He was telling me the truth, but I now understood his truth for what it was: a lie. His lies. "Who was in the office with you today?" "Just me," he said after that barely discernible hesitation. "After a long day, you must be hungry. I made some stew that I could warm up for you." "I grabbed something already." Again, not a lie. "At Linda's." No question, just a statement. I was watching him, and he straightened up. "What?" "I called Linda today, and I heard you come into her house, telling her you'd finished painting her garage. Then you were wondering if dinner was ready. You apologized for not realizing she was on the phone. Your accent was unmistakable." My husband's Adam's apple moved up and down in his neck. "Honey, I went over to paint her garage. That's all." "And to have dinner with her." He didn't say anything. "Fortunately tomorrow is Sunday. During the Confession of Sin, you'll certainly have a long list in your head when you confess to those things which you ought not to have done. Lying to me about where you were. Lying to me about what you were doing today. Lying to me about who you were with. Lying to me about your dinner. You left me home all alone on a Saturday, telling me you were at work, and I worried when I called you at the office and you didn't answer. You were with Linda. All this time, you were with another woman. Why didn't you come home right away when she told you I called?" "She didn't tell me that was you on the phone. She said it was a neighbor. I would have come straight home -- Too late he realized his mistake. "If you'd realized your secret was out. But otherwise, it was OK to stay? With Linda. I suppose I should consider myself lucky you came home this early. Although if dinner smelled good when I called, what have you been doing since dinner? Having dessert?" Michael reached for me and I leaned away from him. He followed me anyway and took my hands in his, holding on when I would have pulled them away. "Suze, stop. It's not what you're thinking. I was just helping her out." "Then why the secrecy? Why not tell me?" "She asked me not to." "Let go of my hands," I said, and he very reluctantly did. I stood and so did my husband. "That doesn't help, Michael. You chose to collude with her to keep a secret from me. From your wife. You were keeping a secret with another woman. How long have you been... how long have you been seeing her?" It took him a moment to understand my delicate wording and he looked shocked. "I'm not. We're not. It's not like that, honey." "I've had a long time to think since I made my discovery. And I realized that when you began working longer hours, Linda began distancing herself from me. At first, it was just the occasional late nights at work for the first four months or so, but in the last three months, you've been missing more and more dinners, working late three or four nights a week. Either Linda was systematically stealing you from me or you were actively pursuing her. Either way, you have been lying to me and dishonoring our marriage vows with a woman I realize has been no friend to me but apparently a great friend to you." "Suze, listen to me. One night when she was over for dinner, you went to get the salad dressing and Linda asked me for help. She asked me to come over the next day to talk, and she begged me not to tell you because she was embarrassed about needing help." "Ah. The beginning of Michael and Linda. The beginning of you choosing another woman over me." "I didn't choose her over you." "Tell me, Michael. How many nights were you actually working late when you told me you wouldn't make it home for dinner?" "She's trying to get the house ready to sell. She doesn't like living there without Rich. So I've been helping her." "I may be a woman, but I think I could build an entire house in seven months. You forget that I've been to her home. It was built not too long after the war, so it's maybe seven years old. Not once did you think maybe you should tell me, or maybe if you had to help her you should come home for dinner to your own wife?" "She was lonely and I felt bad for her --" So my next words would sink in, I just looked at this man I loved so much. "Well, I was lonely and my husband is still alive." "It's not the same thing. She was devastated by Rich's death." "So much so that she's been trying to steal my husband." "Suze, Linda's your best friend." "No, she's not. Not if she could treat me like this. Not if she was luring my husband away from me." "This is getting us nowhere. I haven't been lured anywhere." "Did you peck her? Did you do...anything else with her?" "No!" But there was something on his face. He might be more Linda's than mine now, but I knew Michael. "Tell me," I demanded. "Right now." "It was nothing." "Tell me what that look was or I'll assume every terrible thought I have about my husband committing adultery is true." "I didn't, I swear it, Suze." It h!t me then when his eyes looked to the left. "You didn't go through with it, but you thought about it, didn't you?" His lips tightened. "Just once. But I didn't. I have always been faithful to you." "Right. You just lie to me all the time about working late because you're spending time with Linda and having dinner with her. Oh, and you've thought about breaking our wedding vows with her." "I didn't do anything with her. I'm sorry for lying, Susan, but that's the extent of what I've done wrong." "I'm afraid I don't see it that way because from my viewpoint, you've done irreparable damage to us." "What does that mean?" He was getting angry now. "Just what it sounds like. I no longer trust you." "You're blowing this out of proportion. Let's go to bed, and I'll show you that nothing has changed between us." "You go to bed. I'm staying up for a while." He came over to me and took me gently by the shoulders. "Honey, you're my wife. I love you." "I don't believe you love me. You put your efforts where your heart is, and your efforts haven't been directed at me in a long time. They've been directed toward Linda." "You need to let go of this. I apologized, Suze. I won't help her anymore since it bothers you. What more do you want me to do?" "No need to stop helping her," I told him. "Like I said, it makes no difference. The damage has already been done." At three in the morning -- the clock had just chimed -- Michael came back out into the living room where I was lying on the couch, my head on one of the pillows. Sleep had been impossible, so my mind had been filled with plans for the next few days. "Honey," he sat on the coffee table across from me. "Come to bed. I don't want you out here, worrying yourself over something that isn't even important." His voice was trying to coax me, something he'd never really had to work at before. When I first met Michael, I was convinced he could have been a radio announcer with that swoony voice of his. Combined with his dark, good looks, I'd felt weak when he'd turned his attention on me. With the war over, the men had returned to returned to college campuses in droves and Michael had been one of the returning Army veterans. He'd walked up beside me as I was walking to class and introduced himself. He'd stayed beside me all the way to class, and I'd noticed his slight limp. I'd later find he'd been sh0ot overseas, sending him home just ahead of the rest of those brave boys, and it would be another year before he lost his limp completely. Michael had pursued me relentlessly after that day, walking me to my dorm and looking into my eyes deeply every night before he pressed a gentle peck to my lips. "You need to hurry and sign in before curfew," he had to say just about every night since we were cutting it close. "Don't want you on restriction. I couldn't stand not being able to see you." One memorable night, he'd pecked me and then whispered in my ear, "A man could lose his religion with a girl like you." I wondered now if he'd lost his religion with Linda, too. If he'd been lying to me about how far it had gone with her. If I could ever trust him again. If he even cared how badly he'd hurt me. "Susan, come to bed." The frustration in his voice was evident; I'd never defied Michael before in our lives. Of course, I'd never had reason to. He was a good man and a good husband. Michael was generous with the money he gave me each week, never asking for an accounting, he always thanked me for the meals I made him and he was unfailingly tender and sweet with me. He'd also never said a negative word about me not getting pregnant yet. I was thinking that was a very good thing now, sad as it had made me month after month, year after year. The idea I had forming wouldn't have been possible with a child or children. Michael leaned over and took my limp hand in his strong one. "Honey, there's no need to become hysterical over this. I put the rock on your finger, no one else's. That means something." Still not getting a response from me, he pressed a peck to my palm, something he knew always melted me. "We'll go out to lunch today after church, Suze. Spend the day together, just have some fun." How about...no? Your gesture is too late, you rat fink, and it's prompted by nothing other than guilt rather than a desire to be with me. "Your hand is so cold, honey. Come to bed. Please." After another couple of minutes, while he waited for a response he was never going to get, he gently placed my hand back on the sofa. "You're making a mountain out of a molehill, Suze. I've already apologized for lying, so there's not much else I can do. I'm going back to bed, and you can stay down here and sulk if that makes you feel better, but I'm not going to lose any more sleep over this." He got up, hesitated and then leaned down and pressed a peck to my head. "I love you, Suze," he said, his hand lightly caressing my cheek before he went back to bed. I got up around six-thirty and went to the spare bedroom where I kept my clothes because somehow the closet was bigger than the master closet. I washed up in the bathroom, applied my Avon makeup pinned my hair and then got dressed. Once I put on my hat, I put a light sweater over my shoulders, slid my feet into my pumps, put on my white gloves, grabbed my pocketbook and quietly left the house. Michael liked to sleep in on the weekend, so we'd always attended the ten o'clock service together -- even during the Linda months, he hadn't missed church once. Today, I was going to attend the Morning Prayer service, which began at eight. I'd had to leave early to make the twenty minute walk without having to hurry, and I tried to calm my heart and mind by thinking of nothing but the beautiful pale blue sky, the early-morning sun and the birds happily singing to me along my way. When I finally spotted the distinctive red doors of the church, I sighed in relief. Church had always been a comfort to me. After the service, I was one of the last ones out of the sanctuary, not knowing as many people at this service but still not wanting to talk. I'd pulled down the kneeler and adopted the classic prayer pose -- head down, eyes closed, hands clasped -- so no one would dare bother me. After five minutes, I peeked and saw no one left in the sanctuary. This was going to take some courage. Rising to my feet, I tipped the kneeler back into position with the tip of my toe and turned to walk out. Father Ellis was standing at the door in the narthex, just greeting the last of the parishioners. I walked up as soon as the last one was out the door. "Susan," he greeted me with a smile. I loved the priest and his wife. They were such genuine, caring people you couldn't help but love them. "I don't usually see you at the early service, especially by yourself. Is Michael OK?" Could I do this? "Yes, Father. I imagine he's just tired from spending all day yesterday with another woman." The implication, the look on my face, the way I'd stressed it had made my meaning clear. Father Ellis looked taken aback, and no wonder. Michael and I had always seemed like a solid, happy, loving couple. "Susan, I...do you want to make an appointment with me this week to talk?" | LEARN_MORE | https://b.myfantasyapp.com/ad/bXlmYW50YXN5LzMxMDAx | Fanta001 | https://www.facebook.com/61563419381683/ | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1969-12-31 18:00 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | Learn more | 0 | b.myfantasyapp.com | VIDEO | https://b.myfantasyapp.com/ad/bXlmYW50YXN5LzMxMDAxNC8yMDI0MDkyNTEwMDcwMC9wYWdl?adid={{ad.id}} | 1969-12-31 18:00 | https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/461320428_911310361113394_1684441542570002181_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_s60x60&_nc_cat=108&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=PfMxvIuT60AQ7kNvgF0r3FT&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-1.xx&_nc_gid=AVt_McU4uVwlsiik06Gzmdr&oh=00_AYC0ksf6gZv-naP8euFbd0WfpqF2CfDbfkPH2Jh9zl3pig&oe=66FD2836 | PERSON_PROFILE | 0 | 0 | 0 | Fanta001 | 0 | 0 | 1969-12-31 18:00 | View Edit Delete
