Finally, the tears came.
"Shhh, honey," said Katherine, stroking my hair as I bawled. "It's going to be okay. I'm going to take care of you."
And so began my journey away from the beautiful city I loved. Away from the cement jungle that had always kept me captivated. Far away from the flashing neon signs and the sound of traffic that lulled me to sleep. Away from the expensive shopping, colorful Broadway shows and restaurants that offered every cuisine imaginable. And far away from New York which held my childhood memories and my heart.
I was heading towards Colorado and a ranch with twelve beautiful boys.
--
"Jackie!" Katherine called through the open garage door that led to what must have been the backyard. I followed her voice out into the sunlight.
At first, the only thing I saw was her standing on a pool deck, waving at me. But then I saw them in the water. They were splashing and goofing around—a completely shirtless bunch of gorgeous guys.
"Come here, honey!" called Katherine, so I had no other choice but to join her on the deck. I climbed up the wooden steps hoping that my face wasn't red or puffy from crying and dropped my heavy bag to the ground. Much to my discomfort, everyone went silent.
"Boys," began George, breaking the silence, "this is Jackie and—"
"—and she will be staying with us for a while," finished Katherine, while giving her husband a stern look. A loud breath of air escaped my lungs as I sighed. I hadn't realized how much I didn't want the boys to know why I was really here. I wasn't ready to talk to a bunch of strangers about my family. Besides, if the boys knew, they might treat me like something breakable and that was the last thing I wanted.
At the moment, they were all staring at me like I was a foreigner invading their personal country.
I decided it was time to make peace. Slowly, I raised my hand and shyly waved. "Hi guys. I'm Jackie."
One of the older boys swam forward and pulled himself out of the pool, breaking line with the others. I took one look at him and my pulse stopped. He looked like he had just stepped out of a sports magazine. His pale blond hair was messy and matted down from the pool and I couldn't help but notice that his perfectly toned muscles were lightly misted with water. There were water droplets caught in his dark eyelashes that sparkled in the sunlight, framing his bright blue eyes. Overall, he made me want to melt.
"Why?" he questioned, fixing his bright eyes on me. "Why are you staying with us?"
"Cole!" George scolded. "Don't be so rude. Jackie is our guest."
Cole turned to grin at the other boys and then proceeded to look back to his father. He shrugged. "What? We were all thinking it. I was just the first one to say it."
A few of the other guys nodded in agreement. I felt myself freeze up, afraid that if I told them why I was here, I would break down and start crying again. I definitely didn't want that to happen.
Katherine noticed my panicked look and jumped in to save me. "As you all know, I went to visit Jackie's mother, M-Molly." She stumbled over my mother's name. "There are a few family issues going on right now, so I offered to take Jackie with me." Katherine took a deep breath when she finished. I felt relieved that I wasn't the one who had to lie. Maybe once I settled into the Walter household I could tell them the truth, but not until I knew where I stood with the boys.
"Well, I think I'll just grab the rest of my stuff," I said, wanting to get away from the dozen pair of eyes that were staring at me.
"Oh, right, I forgot. One of you boys needs to help Jackie to her room, while I go make dinner. You all behave yourselves." Katherine pointed a finger at her kids.
When I turned to leave as Katherine and George disappeared into the house, someone caught my arm. I looked up to find myself face to face with one of the boys. He was the tallest of them all, and probably the oldest too. His golden blond hair was pulled back into a short ponytail, and the few strands that weren't held back had curled in the heat. His strong jaw line, thick chin and long straight nose made the glasses he was wearing look rather small. His forearms were very toned, and his hands were rough, most likely from working on the ranch.
"You planning on staying long or do you normally pack this much?" he asked with a smile, looking down at my giant hockey bag. Thinking of home caused my lips to tremble and I felt tears form in my eyes. I didn't want to stay very long at all, but where else could I go? His smile faltered, and the look of concern in his eyes made me feel like somehow he understood. It made me trust him. I wasn't quite sure why, but maybe it was because he looked more like a man than the rest of the boys.
"I don't think I'm going home," I admitted in a low whisper. I didn't want the others to hear, but they were all chattering in the background and not paying attention anyways. He nodded his head and dropped the subject. His small act of kindness made me want to start sobbing again. However, I had a gut feeling that the rest of the boys wouldn't be as nice. I knew that if they thought I was weak, they would eat me alive and spit me back up later.
I made a decision, then and there. If I was going to survive in a house full of boys, there was no way I could let them know about my past or the pain I was suffering. I made myself a rule: no talking about New York. By shutting that part of my life into some deep corner of my mind, I was protecting myself. Being numb was better than feeling pain anyway, right?
The eldest boy cleared his throat to get his brothers' attention. When it quieted down, he started to introduce everyone. "Well, I'm Will and you've already met Cole," he said, pointing to his fair-haired younger brother who had nearly exposed my secret earlier. Cole smirked and saluted me.
"Yeah, never mind him. He's a jerk," Will said. "Over here is Danny." Danny was almost as tall as Will, but much skinnier and his chin was covered in stubble.
"That's Isaac, my cousin," continued Will, pointing to a boy who stood out, due to his midnight black hair. He had the same facial features as the other boys, but was clearly from different parents.
"This is Alex." A younger looking version of Cole stepped forward. He was wearing a baseball cap, and it looked like he spent every day in the sun because his skin was tanned perfectly. I gave him a nervous nod, and he waved back.
"Lee is Isaac's little brother." He gestured to another boy with black hair, and his scowl made me look away.
Next, Will introduced me to Nathan. He was a scrawny teen, but I could tell that when he grew, he would be just as attractive as his older brothers. He was dry, and the only boy not dressed in swimwear. His shirt and jeans were covered in paint. I smiled when I saw two brushes sticking out of his pocket. It almost seemed a little cliché to me when I recalled Katherine saying something about him liking art.
Then there was Jack and Jordan—the first set of twins. They were both wearing the same orange striped shirt, which was heavy with water and clinging to their skin. I was grateful that Jack wore glasses so I could tell the two apart.
Next was Peter, who insisted on being called Pete. Pete had bad sunburn and was sporting an adorable bowl-cut.
Before I could be introduced to the last two boys, they ran from the group and jumped on me. For a moment I thought I would be able to keep my balance, but then my knees buckled and I fell back—straight into the pool.
I paddled back up to the surface, sputtering and gasping for air. I could hear most of the guys laughing.
"Hi Jackie!" cried one of the twins as he stood at the edge of the pool. He was a cute little kid who still hadn't lost his baby fat. Freckles covered his face and his blond hair curled all over. "I'm Zack and that's my twin, Benny!" I looked over to see an exact replica of the smiling kid break the surface of the water.
"Gosh! Someone get Jackie a towel!" Will demanded. He stuck out a hand to help me up, and soon I was shivering on the side of the pool. It was too early in spring to be swimming. These boys were crazy! I was handed a red Power Rangers towel and I quickly wrapped it around myself to cover the now see-through white shirt I was wearing.
"I'm really sorry about that," Will said, before shooting the younger twins a glare.
"The only thing I'm sorry about is that he gave her a towel," someone muttered. I whipped around to see who it was, but they were all standing together silently trying to keep the grins off their faces. Taking a deep breath, I turned back to Will.
"It's okay, but I'd like to go inside and get changed."
"I can help with that," another voice joked. This time the boys couldn't contain their laughter.
"Isaac!" Will snapped. He glared over my shoulder at his cousin until the boys quieted down. Then he turned back to me. "Do you have any other bags in the car?" he asked.
"A ton," I said and nodded my head.
"All right, I'll start unloading the car and someone can show you to your room."
As Will retreated off the deck, I felt myself shrink. So far my only friend had just left me with the enemies. Taking a deep breath of air, I gulped and turned back around. The Walter boys looked at me, their faces blank.
After an awkward thirty seconds, Cole shook his head in irritation and pointed at the house. "Are you going to just stare at us, or do you want to go inside?" he asked. Cole might have been hot—his damp hair had dried into a dreamy I-just-had-hot kind of way—but I could tell he was a jerk and his words made my eyes gloss over with tears. I blinked them back and looked away.
"I want to go inside," I muttered quietly. Then, to show him so, I picked up my bag and hung it over my shoulder.
"Don't forget these," one of the boys said, picking up my skates.
"Thanks um..."
"Nathan," he said with a smile.
"Thanks, Nathan."
"So you play hockey, huh?" Cole asked. His arms were crossed over his chest almost like he didn't believe it.
"Yeah, almost every day since I was six," I stated, proud of myself. "I play goalie." Thinking of hockey made me think of my mom, who had always taken me to practice, even though she didn't know anything about sports. Another wave of pain washed over me and I realized that I had already broken my new rule: no talking about home. This was going to be a lot harder than I thought. But I couldn't help it. Cole's skeptical tone gave me a sudden urge to prove myself to him. Consequently, I couldn't help but feel frustrated with the beautiful boy standing in front of me for making me break my rule so quickly. It made me realize that this was going to be a lot harder than I thought.
"So you're good?" asked Isaac. I nodded, not willing to say anything more. He smirked at me. "I love a girl who knows how to handle a stick properly."
I frowned at him in disgust. Did he really just say that?
"Just ignore him," said Alex, giving his cousin a shove. "He's the family pervert, so if you need me to beat him up, just ask." I offered Alex a small smile. He was just as cute as his older brother Cole, but I could tell he didn't have the same cocky attitude.
"Thanks Alex, but I think I can handle him," I said. Isaac wiggled his eyebrows at my comment. Yuck, I didn't mean it like that!
"That's good," said Cole, "you're going to need to be strong if you're hanging around here."
He grabbed one of my bags that Will had started to pile on the deck, and threw it over his shoulder before heading into the house. Everyone else grabbed a towel and followed him in. For one long moment I stood on the deck alone, looking at my new house. Squeezing my eyes shut, I pictured the penthouse back in New York and the hurt flooded through me with ease. My family was gone and they were never coming back.
"Hey Jackie, are you coming or what?" someone called.
I opened my eyes and nodded my head. This might be where I have to live, but I knew it would never be my home.
--
Cole led me up the stairs and through a maze of halls. When we reached the farthest corner of the house, Cole finally stopped.
"This is where you will be staying," he said, pushing open a door. I walked into the room, but it was pitch black. Putting my hand on the wall, I searched for the light switch. Cole and I found it at the same time. The contact was electric and I pulled my hand back in shock when our fingers touched. He chuckled and I was glad that the darkness covered my blush. When Cole turned on the lights and a warm glow lit up the room, I forgot my embarrassment and gasped in awe.
Every inch of the walls had been painted in vivid colors. A mural of a tropical rainforest started on one end of the room and by the time it had wrapped around to the other side it had transformed into an ocean filled with sea creatures. One side of the ceiling had been painted to look like the night sky, which faded into day on the other. Even the wooden panels on the ceiling fan had been decorated. I stood, mouth open, and gaped at my new room.
"I hope you don't mind it. Nathan ran out of furniture and walls to paint on, so my mom finally surrendered her guest room." He scratched the back of his head looking embarrassed.
"Oh my god, I love it!" I said truthfully. My new room was probably the first thing that I actually loved about Colorado. Cole smiled a slow cocky grin that made me want to squirm. He still had no shirt on and I purposely kept my gaze glued to his face so I wouldn't stare. How was I ever going to live with this boy who looked like a Greek God?
"Well that's good, because his work is all over the ranch. If he's not painting, he's not happy," he said.
It took us a few trips to get my luggage inside. Everyone else had disappeared quickly, so no one else was there to help. I started unpacking, and Cole leaned against the doorway and watched me work. First I took out my laptop and set it on the desk, which was painted in brilliant colors. Then I pulled out a handful of photographs. For a moment I considered asking Cole for some tape so I could put them up, but as I looked down at a picture of my sister I knew that I wouldn't be able to handle seeing my family's smiling faces. Instead, I slipped them back into the front pocket of my backpack. Next, I unzipped my largest suitcase and started to put my clothes in the dresser that was painted to match the desk. I decided to unpack my undergarments when Cole wasn't staring at me.
"So you're a big sports person, huh?" he asked when I piled all my hockey gear in one of the corners.
"Yeah, I'm not really a girlie-girl." As the words left my mouth, doubtful thoughts swirled in my head. Should I have said that? Would Cole make fun of me? You shouldn't care, I told myself silently.
Cole just laughed. "Really?" he asked raising an eyebrow, "because you sure pack like one."
My face turned a bright shade of red, and I had to contain myself from yelling at him. Of course I packed a lot. I was being forced to move across the country because I had no home anymore!
"Well anyways," he continued, "when you're done you can head down to the kitchen. It's almost dinner time, which is one of the best parts of the day. My mom always cooks something good and we all eat together."
He smirked at me one last time before turning to leave. When he disappeared around the corner, I collapsed on my new bed and sighed. I had survived my first encounter with the Walter boys. I didn't feel up to round two, but then my stomach growled, so I changed out of my wet clothes before reluctantly heading off to my second encounter with the Walter boys.
--
I turned off the hot water and stepped out of the shower. Dinner had been a disaster and it was entirely my fault. After Mr. and Mrs. Walter had calmed down the mayhem, everyone was given a job to clean up the mess. That was everyone except for me. Katherine had apologized profusely for her son's behavior and sent me off to take a shower even though I had pleaded to help. Most of the boys threw me dirty looks as I left the kitchen.
"Oh!" I squeaked when I walked out of the bathroom to find Cole sitting on my bed. He was still covered in tomato sauce, but was eating out of a take-out Chinese carton. A smile spread across his face when he looked me up and down.
"Nice towel, Jackie," he laughed.
I blushed, wrapping it tighter around my figure. What the heck was he doing in my room? What if I had walked out undressed? Mortified, I turned away from his prying eyes and went to get my clothes from the dresser.
"Want some?" he asked while holding up the carton of food.
"Yeah, hold on," I replied as I hurried back into the bathroom to change.
When I came back out, he was still sitting on my bed. Cautiously, I sat down next to him and he handed me some chopsticks. For the next few minutes we sat in silence, eating sweet chicken. It felt surprisingly peaceful sitting with Cole. But of course he had to go and ruin one of the only relaxing moments I'd had since moving here.
"I enjoyed the dinner show tonight," he said.
I turned away from him and buried my face in a fluffy pillow.
Cole laughed. "Aw, come on, Jackie. It was just a joke. To be honest, that stuff happens all the time in this house."
I propped myself up on my elbows and raised an eyebrow. "Really?" I questioned. "'Cause that sounds like a load of bull."
"Well, it's not always that dramatic, but at least you did it with flair. You should've seen the look on your face when you pulled Izzy out." He let out a whole hearted laugh again.
"Izzy?" I asked in confusion.
Cole set the empty box of Chinese down on the bedside table and scooted closer. "He's Jordan's snake."
"Any other dangerous pets I should know about?" I grumbled.
"Nope," he said with a laugh. "Just Isaac."
My bedroom door swung open as Danny burst into the room. "Cole! Kelly's here looking for—" Danny stopped mid-sentence when he saw us. "Oh. Um, sorry for interrupting, but she's waiting in the living room."
"Okay," Cole replied calmly. He was still staring at me. Danny backed out of the room and shut the door. He looked at me for a moment longer before getting off the bed and grabbing the empty container to throw away.
"Don't worry, Jackie. Tomorrow will be better, I promise. Besides, you should be excited about tomorrow. It's your first day at ourschool."
"Oh, great," I moaned and flopped back onto my pillow. I was so caught up in the dinner disaster that I had almost forgotten that I would be going to a public school for the first time in my life tomorrow morning.
"'Night, Jackie," he said as he walked across the room.
"Goodnight, Cole," I responded. Suddenly, a thought ran through my head. "Wait," I called just as Cole was about to shut the door. "Who's Kelly?
Cole paused before responding. "Oh, she's my girlfriend."
--
I went to the kitchen to get some breakfast before anyone else woke up. I thought it was the perfect way to avoid another catastrophe. Of course, my plan backfired to the highest degree. Mrs. Walter was sitting at the table in a pink, fuzzy bathrobe, drinking coffee and reading a book. To make matters worse, Isaac was there too. He was standing at the kitchen counter and eating a bagel in his boxers. The only thing I could do was stand there and gawk like an idiot.
"Morning, Jackie!" he exclaimed through a mouthful of bagel. Once again, I felt warmth creeping up into my cheeks. Why did every single one of these boys have a perfect set of abs?
"Um, hi Isaac," I greeted stupidly. Katherine looked up with a start at the sound of my voice.
"Isaac!" she scolded. "Go put some clothes on, for God's sake! There's a girl in the house now."
"But you're a girl and you've never had a problem with it before," he whined. "Besides, Jackie doesn't mind, do you Jackie?" He turned to face me.
What the heck was I supposed to say to that? Oh my God Isaac, I love staring at your half-undressed body? As if I needed to feed his ego. Instead, I answered like any smart girl in my situation would do.
"Um..." I trailed off, looking back and forth between the two. Yes 2024-05-08 19:25 active 762 0 1543789479819195 Steamy, small town, single dad, holiday romance! He stopped and waited for the girls to catch up, and the sight of those bare baby feet and little pudgy calves nearly undid him. Evvie pressed her hand to the wall, dipping her toe until her foot hit the next stair. It was the cutest thing he’d ever seen. But really, it was the innocence, the helplessness, that undid him. An intense sense of protectiveness surged through him, and he scooped her up. “I got you.” Just as he started to turn back around, he caught Paisley’s gaze, caught the longing, the stark loneliness, so he picked her up, too, and held her tightly against him. “I see you, little one. And I got you.” She cracked a tiny smile, and an unfamiliar emotion swept over him, loosening his joints and softening his bones. One girl on each hip, he made his way to the family room and set them down on the couch. But he couldn’t get her expression out of his mind because this was what Hailey meant about having to be there for them. They were scared and lost and needed an anchor now. Not later, when social services found the right family. He might be the worst man in the world for the job of raising two little girls, but right now... I'm the only one. Yes 2024-05-08 19:23 active 762 0 406371485548490 Read with Your Ears➤➤ "I, James Rodriguez, soon to be alpha of Eclipse Pack reject you, Nikolina Reed as my mate and Luna. “
The pain was blinding for Nikolina. Her next words took both of them by surprise. She was anything but weak and she knew she deserved a lot better than some douche bag who was disrespectful towards his own mate. Alpha or not, he shouldn't be the one who gets the last laugh.
***
Nikolina POV
4 hours earlier
I woke up in a very good mood. I am finally eighteen and today is the day I find my mate. It actually depends on both sides. If they are of age, they'll find each other soon enough, seventeen is the youngest you can be when you find your mate.
However, most of the time, the guy or the girl have to wait for their other half to come of age, which I think is a great idea.
Yes, I'm a werewolf, specifically the current Beta's daughter and soon to be Beta's sister. The disappointment of the family. But that's okay; I'm not very inclined to make them proud or follow in their footsteps, but mostly they want Alex to do it.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not abused or bullied; except for the occasional remarks, shunned from society, the usual stuff.
They say I'm ugly, but I know better than to believe that. I could have been popular due to my blue eyes and gold speckles, blonde hair and hourglass figure. But I like to keep to myself. Plus my hair was naturally blonde unlike my mother's peroxide bleached hair that comes out of bottles and pricey extensions. Actually, dad and Alex both have brown hair so I don't know how I have blonde hair. For months, I even checked the roots of my hair to find some sort of discoloration to prove that even my hair was bleached. But in vain.
My mom was the stereotypical cheerleader in high school while my dad was the “douche” and quarterback. Apparently they want me to be like them, and social hierarchy exists in packs as well. And my brother is following our parents footsteps, sleeping with more than half of the population, while I'm not.
They revel in attention and bullying people who are lower than them, as they say. To the outside world, my family and I love each other. On the inside it’s an extreme hate relationship, something the pack is aware of except for the Alpha and Luna.
If they knew the truth, my parents, Tiffany and Mark, would lose their respect and beloved Alex's position would be taken away from him. Which would obviously take his popularity down a notch. Horrifying for him. Entertaining for me.
Anyways, today is also the soon-to-be Alpha's eighteenth birthday. James Rodriguez.
Sometimes I wonder how someone as sweet and kind as Diana and George, produce a kid like James.
In short, James is the snobby player. It’s actually really surprising how none of the girls are pregnant yet...
Back to me, I dressed up with more care than usual. I wore a baby pink sundress with black gladiator sandals. I applied a bit of winged liner to make my eyes pop. I've always read stories about loving mates. Who knows how much of it is true? For all I know, it’s some made up fantasy to make mates seem like the ultimate endgame. Maybe one day, I would meet my mate and then we could run away towards the sunset............or something, I don't really care.
Apparently, all mates are compatible with their other half. It’s like love at first sight and the males getting all possessive about their mates is very appealing and a turn on, or so I've heard.
It's all hearsay. And I think it’s stupid. It’s like the males are all custom made robots. Why else would their behavior be so alike?
And there was a paragraph about heat and shifting and marking. Maybe, my mate's gonna go all caveman on me and tear my throat out.
I'm just kidding, morbid thoughts on my birthday are kind of my thing. And its wishful thinking. I don't care. He might even be an omega and I still wouldn't care. Even if he's a human, it wouldn't matter. And if he's not in this pack then..... Oh well... It's better for me. I don't want to stay in a pack where I have no respect and people treat me bad. Status had once mattered to me. But when you have parents like mine, you kind of start praying not to ever be like them.
Not once did they look at me but of course, Alexander was doted on by everyone. Kids. Parents. Friends. You name it.
Apparently, it's because he's a boy. And according to my mother, girls are good for getting screwed, getting hit on, obeying their men, acting flirty along, and popping out heirs.
And lucky for you all, my mother happens to be exhibit A.
You should all be jealous because it's not everyday that you have a live walking, talking example to show the word and tell them what a hoe your mother is.
Third Person POV
Nikolina walked to school as she was not allowed a car. Though Alex was the proud owner of a shiny Silver Volvo. Double standards were very common in the Reed family. She had always wanted her own car, something that was a stunning shade of bright canary yellow, but that dream was nowhere close to becoming a reality.
All of a sudden, she smelt an amazing scent; peppermint and honey. Lydia purred and rolled around in happiness, barely able to contain her excitement.
On searching for the source, her eyes met warm, hazel orbs. His eyes expressed lust and adoration as they raked all over her body.
Realization finally hit her hard when she saw that James-freaking-Rodriguez was her mate! The next Alpha of Solaris Eclipse Pack. And he was Portia's long-standing boyfriend.
You know what he did next? James went back to groping the head cheerleader. “Portia.... “ Oh, sorry. Rookie mistake. Portia Scott.
Tears threatened to fall while her wolf Lydia whimpered, seeing her mate touch another...
“Our mate is beautiful.” James's wolf, Jace said. Nikolina was more than just beautiful. Many males of the pack thought she was gorgeous but never mentioned it out loud due to the fear of facing Alex's wrath. Alex was the one to start it all: the petty insults, the hateful words and making an outcast out of her. Others had just followed his footsteps. And of course, some of the girls were shallow enough to find happiness by making Nikolina feel miserable, because they were insecure about themselves.
But the main issue was, though James thought Nikolina was pretty, he would never accept her as his mate and Luna. Though she was Beta Mark's daughter and was of high status, both him and his ego considered her a nobody. He knew about the insults and he had done it as well. In his eyes, she was worthless and all everyone ever did was talk down on her and she never fought back.
He couldn't have a... thing like that as his mate. Beauty just wasn't enough for him, being a ruthless woman was a requirement.
“She might be beautiful but I don't want her. She's a nobody. If people know that she is my mate, I would become the laughing stock of my pack. Seriously, people walk all over her. She can never be my Luna.” That was the thought going through his mind as he sucked on Portia's neck hard enough to bruise.
“Ow! You're hurting me, boo! You know Kelly has my concealer today.” Portia whined but still made no move to shove James away. She just proceeded to grind her lower body into James and trying to get as close as humanly possible without getting rid of her clothes in public.
James finally pried Portia off his body and walked towards his mate. In some ways, Portia was like a bloodsucking leech or an annoying wart, never leaving without a fight.
“Baby, where are you going? I need you!” Her voice was like a cat dragging its claws across a board.
James just signalled her to shut up before walking towards his mate. He would do the right thing, of course, as the future Alpha of Solaris Eclipse Pack and give Nikolina what she deserves.
He stopped in front of her and asked, “What's your name?”
“Nikolina,” she stated. He soon noticed that she had no friends and no car and he felt the curious stares on his back as everyone's attention was on him.
“I, James Rodriguez, soon to be alpha of Eclipse Pack reject you, Nikolina Reed as my mate and Luna. “ As he rejected her, Jace whimpered and cowered. And James felt bad but he knew this was the right thing to do for himself and the pack. From his perspective, Nikolina was someone who brought out the worst in people and Portia was way more deserving to be his mate and Luna, considering that she was fearless and wasn't afraid to fight dirty for her rights.
James was an egoistic douche bag who mistook petty behavior for fearless but he was blinded by the greed for power and popularity.
The pain was blinding for Nikolina. She would have collapsed if not for the anger that surged through her. She was furious. At James. The Moon Goddess. Not realizing how painful rejection was. Her fate. It was a never ending list.
It felt like she was being drowned in liquid bleach, her lungs burned and she saw red. Anger took over the pain she was feeling and she didn't want to give him the satisfaction of knowing how hurt she was.
Her next words took both of them by surprise. She was anything but weak and she knew she deserved a lot better than some douche bag who was disrespectful towards his own mate. Alpha or not, he shouldn't be the one who gets the last laugh.
“I, Nikolina Reed, accept your rejection as my mate and Alpha. I sincerely hope you get the clap!”
With that, she turned on her heel and left the school premises.
“Who needs a mate? Especially someone like James. People like him need girls like Portia by their sides, who cater to their whims and needs and whatever freaky carnal desire they might have.” Nikolina thought darkly. She wasn't going to give in to her pain and this rejection was the final push that encouraged her to chase after her freedom and break bonds with the family who had clipped off her wings.
James felt a tiny bit of hurt realizing that she didn't even think twice before accepting the rejection and all he could wonder was how did she not burst into tears or grovel at his feet to take her back. Jace did not talk. He just whimpered, feeling the loss of his mate. Before James could think of it anymore, Portia dragged him to an empty classroom to distract her beloved Jamie boo. It seemed as if James wasn't the least bit affected by the incident with Nikolina, because his actions didn't falter as he hitched Portia's skirt up and ripped her panties, drilling her like an animal and releasing himself on her clothes and face as he left her alone to clean up.
Nikolina POV
“Well, he can go drill his toy as much as he wants.” I thought darkly while making my way towards home. All Lydia did was whimper. The moment I saw James, I knew something like this was bound to happen. You don't have any expectations when someone like him is supposed to be your destined mate. He was born with a big ego and he can just stuff it up his.
“Maybe he regrets hurting us, you know.” Lydia whimpered.
Before I could reply, searing hot pain flooded my senses. I felt myself fall on the pavement and the pain started to become more intense. It is obvious, isn't it? He's already drilling someone just minutes after rejecting me. It felt like my body was set on fire and the blistering flames charred my skin.
I slowly got up and almost keeled over as my vision turned white. Dizziness washed over me. I had to clench my fists and dig my fingers hard enough to draw blood. Getting away from him and this stupid pack is my best bet. He was doing it intentionally considering the fact he knows that we're both connected unless one of us dies or gets marked by another. Walking never felt so strenuous and with every step I had to force myself to not curl up on the pavement and cry. I know I deserve someone better but I did want to cry my pain away.
After what seemed like hours, the pain slowly ebbed away. Painful times ahead. The only problem is that the mate bond doesn't break even after being rejected. Only if the rejected is marked by the first mate or by another, or if one of the mates die, will the bond break.
I entered my house and went to my room to pack my bags. You know, in every werewolf story the rejected mate writes letters before leaving. There's no logic to it. I mean, don't you get it? No one cares if you leave. No one cares if you die. No one cares if you slit your throat or get molested or murdered. That's the harsh truth. Why should I open my feelings on a letter make them feel pity? I can just run away and live my best life, away from them. It's not like they will send out search teams for you.
I don't want pity. I can do better than that. I picked up my red lipstick and wrote in capitals before leaving. I know I'm dramatic but it serves them right. They'll remember this for years to come: women can walk away without feeling a twinge of guilt or regret.
Showing vulnerability would only make me seem weak and I've let people walk over me way too many times.
My mom was probably busy getting her hair done or something. That's the only thing she ever does. Or her nails. Or maybe she was out shopping with snobby people like herself. It's obvious that birds of a feather flock together. The only thing I ever liked about her is that she cooked for us, sometimes. Mom made a mean lasagna.
Dad was probably with Alpha George. That's usually where he is. But then again, he also has this terrible habit of getting drunk during daylight hours. And once he even groped some other girl in front of the whole pack. Mom turned an ugly shade of red as she kicked him in the crotch. Those were the good days. It was fun when he laid on the couch with a bag of frozen peas on his groin and mom was nowhere around.
Leaving was better for me anyway. Nothing was tying me down to this place. No friends. No proper family. I would be doing myself and them a favor.
I took my dad's sleek black Porsche for my escapade. I might as well leave loaded and in style, besides it's high time I had a car.
Just as I reached the pack border, I said, “I, Nikolina Reed, break all ties with the Solaris Eclipse Pack.” The patrol guards looked at me, but its not like they would stop me.
The pack links broke and with that I revved up the engine and sped through the borders, driving towards my new life. A better life. It was a blessing that this pack did not care enough to stop me.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
To enjoy more: Download our APP, search audiobook id 99168 and hear the complete version!
