Jacob kept looking at his watch.<br /> <br /> They looked exactly as they did the day she went to prison. Tall, handsome, strong. In an unfortunate turn of events, Jennifer died in a car wreck. She felt helpless and alone, with no one to turn to for help.<br /> <br /> At first, Grace didn't know why she was targeted. But after a while, she discovered the real reason. Grace sucked up to one of the female guards in prison, washing her feet, giving her massages, and even doing her laundry. Finally, she gained her trust, and she told Grace the truth. <br /> <br /> "You poor little thing… Someone paid us to beat you.” <br /> <br /> Grace knew immediately who was responsible.<br /> <br /> The man who she loved. The man who she thought would never betray her. The man who swore that he would always protect her. <br /> <br /> Sean Stevens. <br /> <br /> She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw their cars outside the gates. Her grandfather told her that they could make more money in the city because there was more junk to collect. <br /> <br /> But Grace knew the true reason why her grandfather wanted her to go to school there.<br /> <br /> The girls in the city had shiny hairpins, and Grace wanted them too.<br /> <br /> Grace’s grandfather once stood outside a small jewelry store for hours, before finally going inside to buy a shiny new hairpin for Grace. He wanted her to fit in, and be just like every other girl.<br /> <br /> The school she attended offered financial aid to students from lower-class families. Grace’s teacher Mrs. Green helped her apply for it. That’s when Grace met Jacob, Mrs. Green’s son. The two became fast friends. <br /> <br /> Jacob had the best scores at school, and he occasionally helped Grace with her studies. Because of him, her grades quickly improved.<br /> <br /> Grace’s grandfather was very grateful to Mrs. Green for helping his granddaughter. He had no money to repay her, so he offered to help tend her garden. <br /> <br /> Mrs. Green lived in a small cottage. After school every day, Grace’s grandfather tended the garden while Jacob and Grace did their homework and played in the yard. <br /> <br /> Once, Mrs. Green joked to Grace’s grandfather, "Your granddaughter is so sweet and adorable. Maybe she and Jacob will make a cute couple someday."<br /> <br /> He rubbed his hands nervously and said, "We’d be lucky to have Jacob with us. The one she said was worth 70,000 dollars.<br /> <br /> Her grandfather was rushed to the hospital, but the damage was already done. He became paralyzed. <br /> <br /> Grace owed a lot of money to the hospital, so she went to Lily for compensation. It was her dog after all. <br /> <br /> Lily stood in front of Grace and said arrogantly, "You are Sean’s girlfriend? What, you didn't get money from him, so you came crawling to me?" <br /> <br /> Everyone knew Lily had always liked Sean. But he chose Grace over her, and she hated her for it. <br /> <br /> "My dog's leg is broken because of your idiot grandfather, I should be the one asking you for money!" She sneered down her nose, and said, "You and your grandpa are just a bunch of country bumpkins. You’re both worthless!"<br /> <br /> Grace couldn’t hold back the rage inside her. She slapped Lily across the face. <br /> <br /> The two started to fight, pulling and clawing at each other. Jennifer, Lily’s sister, saw this and came to help. <br /> <br /> By this point, Grace was already pregnant, too weak to fight them off both, so she ran to her car to drive away. Jennifer and Lily chased after her in their fancy convertible. The car chase was too fast, and it spun out of control. That’s when the accident happened. <br /> <br /> After her arrest, Grace didn't even try to escape. She’d seen how cruel the world could be. <br /> <br /> The eyes that stared back at her were old, far older, and duller than they used to be.<br /> <br /> She sighed and rolled her cleaning cart toward the exit. <br /> <br /> With an eye on the time, she moved quickly and efficiently to clean the rest of the building. <br /> <br /> The life of a janitor wasn’t glamorous, but after she left prison this was the only job she could find. <br /> <br /> As she packed her things to leave, she heard two people watching the news on their phones.<br /> <br /> “Did you hear? Lily Atkinson is engaged to Sean Stevens!” <br /> <br /> “God, she’s so lucky! She cussed out once when he made a pass at her, knowing she was dating Sean. She searched her mind for his name: Christopher Peterson.<br /> <br /> In hindsight, many of Sean’s friends were elitist creeps. She should’ve paid more attention to that. Birds of a feather do flock together. <br /> <br /> "Aren’t you supposed to be a lawyer?" He walked towards her with staggering steps. <br /> <br /> Another man stepped forward after Chris. Grace didn’t recognize him. “Hey, didn’t you know? She went to jail after killing the Atkinson girl."<br /> <br /> “Ha, look at her rags!” The woman pointed at her clothes and laughed. One asked, “Are you crazy? That’s just a random homeless guy."<br /> <br /> Grace understood their confusion. <br /> <br /> The man—her savior—wore old ragged clothes. But alas, your father appointed me as the Gamma as compensation for everything." She laughed bitterly. “Imagine being given a position in exchange for your happiness. So tell me why I should step down for you to have the life you want when I can have it for myself. Doesn't my own child deserve to be the successor of the pack as a reward for everything I have done?" <br /> <br /> With fresh tears welling up in my eyes, I fired back at her. “Whatever happened between my parents and you was meant to remain there. Why do you have to drag me into this? Why do you have to go to this extent to spite me?" <br /> <br /> Luna Isobel smiled with contempt. “Well, it's simple. I can't punish the dead, but I can very much take revenge on the living and I promise you this quest for revenge goes way back, that there is nothing you can do to stop it." She rose from the bed and then walked up to me. “From today, you are going to be my Maid, Just like I've served you since birth, you will serve me for the rest of your miserable life. You are going to be at my beck and call, and anytime you kick against my order." Her eyes stared intently into mine as she added. “Death will be your punishment. I have done it before, and I will surely do it again." <br /> <br /> My eyelashes batted in shock. “What do you mean by that?" <br /> <br /> “The less you know, the better." Then she snapped her fingers. “Also, don't even bother reporting me to the elders because they are all on my side. Lastly, the wedding tomorrow is for myself and my soon-to-be Alpha, Cade. But you will be in attendance, making sure the guests are comfortable."<br /> <br /> My face streamed with uncontrollable tears. I wonder how everything could change for me in the blink of an eye. <br /> <br /> True, my father did her dirty, but it doesn't involve my innocent Mom and me. So why did I have to suffer? <br /> <br /> Worse still, I am pregnant with Cade's child. She smiled at me. “I knew the sedative would wear off any moment from now." <br /> <br /> As she was talking, her voice grew faint in my head because the nostalgia of everything that went down before I passed out, surged to the forefront of my brain all at once. <br /> <br /> My heart plummeted deep into my stomach.<br /> <br /> I still couldn't believe my mother...no no, Luna Isobel could do this to me. I cried out, stomping my feet repeatedly on the ground as I tried to struggle free. “They can't get married. He is mine, she took him from me!" <br /> <br /> "Liar!" Luna Isobel fired back. “Everyone look at her. She isn't in her right mind. Look at the blood dripping from her hand, I'm pretty sure she escaped from the hospital where is being treated for her mental health!" <br /> <br /> My breath hitched. <br /> <br /> What?<br /> <br /> Luna Isobel was trying to play a very smart and fast card on me. Luna Isobel yelled while I continued to struggle for my freedom. <br /> <br /> “Let me go! Let me go this instant!" <br /> <br /> Every part of me still hoped this could be some sort of prank. I wished the next minute, Cade would get down that aisle, run towards me, kiss me senselessly, and apologize for everything they put me through. <br /> <br /> But on the contrary, he continued staring at me without remorse. I didn't need anyone to tell me that he was also conflicted. Alpha Jericho pointed at a scroll situated on a very huge, squared table. <br /> <br /> I walked over there and then picked up the scroll. <br /> <br /> "Those are the rules you'd have to adhere to as my Luna. Since I gave you new life, I believe that's the least you can do to survive in my pack." <br /> <br /> With shaky breaths, my eyes skimmed through the written rules. <br /> <br /> #Rule 1- Do not come to my chambers except when I summon you. <br /> <br /> #Rule 2- Do not question my authority and make sure to do exactly as I say. <br /> <br /> #Rule 3- Even though we are mates, you are not permitted to sleep in the same chamber with me. You stay in yours and I stay in mine. <br /> <br /> #Rule 4-Remember we are not in love. Don't ever address me with any other name except from my title. <br /> <br /> I scoffed inaudibly. Of course, I knew we weren't in love.
