He was my first, only and last guy I ever slept with. <br /> But he chose another woman, the coffee waitress at our favorite café downtown that we visited frequently.<br /> ————————<br /> <br /> Dimitri<br /> Present day, Wentworth Maximum Security Prison.<br /> I was in a lousy mood. The prison guard escorted me to my cell after work. I entered my cell with a scowl on my face. I seethed with irritation and didn't want to be bothered. Not that it was new.<br /> I took off my blue prison jacket, only wearing my white tank top beneath, and hung it on the chair. I sauntered to my bed, plopped down, and held my head between my hands. A dull ache started to form. Promising a good headache.<br /> "Inmate 29901!"<br /> I looked up and saw the prison guard in his dark blue uniform staring at me. It was strange to see one of them in front of my cell. They usually didn't come looking for me unless it's got something to do with the parole hearings or visitors that I almost never got coming.<br /> "You got mail." The prison guard continued, reaching his hand out with a letter.<br /> Wait a minute, is that a pink envelope? I frowned at the prison guard, not getting up just yet. I rarely got messages and if I did, it's by email. Nobody sent letters. And from who!? Eventually the prison guard got tired from standing and threw the envelope at my feet. As he walked away, I reached for it.<br /> The front of the pink envelope was the address of Wentworth Prison and my name written neatly above. There was no mistaking, this letter was sent for me. I looked at it, confused for a second, and ripped the top open. Who would send me a letter? I thought curiously?<br /> The handwriting was the neatest I have ever seen from someone. My eyes scanned the letter as I read.<br /> Dear Mr. Hawke,<br /> How are you? My name is Lillie Clarke. I am 24 years of age and a violinist as well as a 4th grade English teacher. I received your details for Pen Pal Prisoners.<br /> I would like to help people and thought having contact with you might inspire some encouragement.<br /> I'm not sure what you been and going through but know this can be a good outlet for people to talk about themselves or what they're doing. I can write to you once a week. Or more if you would like.<br /> Here's something about me. I love playing the violin and teaching my kids literature. Anything vintage and classic is what I love. I'm not bad in the kitchen either and can bake a mean set of chocolate brownies. My roommate is my ginger cat called pebbles.<br /> I'm excited to learn more about you. What is your daily life like? I really don't mind.<br /> I look forward to hearing from you.<br /> Regards,<br /> Lillie.<br /> I read the letter twice. It felt strange to receive it. I had no knowledge about pen pal prisoners. Never mind, registered for one. Then it hit me. I remembered a few years ago that random inmates were to be picked for the pen pal prisoners programme and inmates that wanted to volunteer. Since I didn't volunteer, I didn't think much about it. Until now, that is.<br /> Placing the letter back in the pink envelope, I didn't know what to make or feel about all of it. Was I supposed to write back, or completely ignore the letter and call it nonsense? I contemplated the latter. I threw the letter on my side desk and continue to lie on my bed.<br /> It pleased me this was a woman; I guess. Her letter sounded feminine, and the pink envelopes were a dead giveaway. I smirked. A tinge of eagerness crept through me.<br /> While I would've chosen the latter option. I'll confess I've been bored out of my skull here most of the time. And whether or not I wanted to admit it to myself, I felt lonely. I talked a little around here. Maybe it would be worth my while to respond. Who knows, maybe the letters can shake things up in my life? Hoping I'll be writing to a drop-dead woman, that is. I licked my lips and smiled salaciously.<br /> With time on my hands, I decide to get up and head to the library. That's where the stationery was collected.<br /> I walked in the small library to the counter desk where the stationery was held. It was half in construction, with part of the place cut off with yellow tape. Construction stopped due to lack of funds by the administration, or lack of sympathy for convicts.<br /> "What you need?" Jimmy asked.<br /> He was an elderly black man, an inmate like me, who worked at the library. And the only friendly one I knew. I liked the library; it was the only place to find solitude outside of the cells. Jimmy and I got to know each other well over the years. And the only guy I ever smiled with. His peppered beard and hair were distinguished. The lines of his face created from a lot of years of hardship. If you needed to know about anything. He was your guy. Thirty years served up in prison gives you a lot of experience.<br /> "Pen, paper, and a couple of envelopes." I answered. Grateful the prison gave stationery free of charge.<br /> He raised an eyebrow. "What's this for?" he asked, smiling weakly but interested no less knowing this was uncommon. I winced. He looked weaker by the day. But shrugged it off.<br /> "Some chick wrote to me. So, I thought I'd be a polite gentleman and write her back." I said smoothly, catching his heavy gaze.<br /> He looked at me and chuckled. "You a gentleman? HA! And what girls do you know that write letters? I thought the girls you hang out with barely read. I'm shocked they can write."<br /> This was the only guy that can bring a smile to my face. A shiny penny in this dump.<br /> "Well yeah. It's through this pen pal prisoners, I don't know the girl," trying to keep my tough guy exterior. I didn't want to show I was eager for this or anything.<br /> "I didn't think you would register for something like that, you don't look – "<br /> "I'm not the type." Completing his sentence. "And besides, I never registered. admin did." I said, making him understand.<br /> "Hmmm mmm." Jimmy said, raising an eyebrow, clearly not buying my story.<br /> I chuckled. "Hey, I'm bored anyway. Why not give it a try?"<br /> "Why not?" he agreed, reaching for the requested stationery and handing it to me.<br /> "Thanks Jimmy, who knows what mischief I might get into with a new pen pal." I said with a wink.<br /> Jimmy smiled and shook his head. "Happy writing and write more than one sentence please, and remember, don't scare the poor girl off," he chuckled behind me. I waved him off and walked back to my cell.<br /> I placed the stationery on my desk and took a seat. I didn't know how to start this. Come to think of it, I had never written a letter before. This was totally out of my comfort zone, and I wasn't sure if I liked it. I bit my lip with my pen in my hand. I came out blank. What do I say to this chick?<br /> I decided to re-read the letter to look at the questions she asked. Hey maybe I can just answer her for now. I took a deep breath and started to write.<br /> This might be harder than I thought.<br /> <br /> Lillie<br /> The day was eventful, to say the least. Dealing with a 4th grader screaming at the top of their lungs can be quite a challenge. My daily English lessons were usually filled with comprehensions, reading and literature, that my kiddies clearly struggled to focus on. Sometimes I feel like I'm in an episode of Love and Hip Hop. I literally spend half of the day trying to solve their mini me dramas.<br /> At times I scream in my head, LITERATURE! LET'S DO THAT! I understand, literature is not the coolest subject under the planet and some might dare call it lame. But the whining of these kids. The constant variations of "do we have to?!" Can drive me up the wall.<br /> "YES! You have to." I try to say in a calm manner.<br /> But what can I say, as long as I can get a few nouns and punctuation to stick to their memory. I'm a happy Miss Clarke.<br /> I sighed, grateful it was home time and classes had ended. I stayed behind in my class and sat at my desk to prepare some assessments. It was a medium-sized spaced classroom with bright posters of Shakespeare's plays and parts of speech attached around on each wall. I preferred working here since it was my little sanctuary. My assessments weren't due until next week. But an early start was always a good start.<br /> I was proud of my work and so was the principal. Mrs Brown always made me the exemplary example of teacher professionalism.<br /> The letter I wrote to inmate 29901 crossed my thoughts from time to time. Like now. I should check the post today again, I thought. It's been four days since I wrote the letter to him and yet no response. I couldn't help but feel slightly bummed, although I don't even know the man.<br /> The thought of rejection stirred that self-doubt in me I tried to hide deep inside. It was a constant reminder of that heart-wrenching day with my ex. The cruel image burned into my memory 18 months ago.<br /> I walked in on my boyfriend, my high school sweetheart, the one I called the love of my life of six years, thrusting into another woman from behind in his kitchen.<br /> That fateful day, he didn't hear me entering his apartment; I guess they were too enraptured by their screwing around to notice. The first thing I heard were the disgusting moans rumbling from the kitchen. My heart dropped, freezing me on the spot. I hoped above hopes that it wasn't my Mason that I was hearing, it could be somebody else. As I padded slowly towards the kitchen, my eyes deceived me.<br /> I saw Mason with his pants down, dropped to his ankles, smacking his hips against the back of a red-haired woman bent over the kitchen table, squealing her heart out.<br /> Nausea gripped me as I clutched my stomach, holding down the fried chicken sandwich from lunch I ate earlier. It felt like a hammer punched me in my gut, smashing my heart into fragments from the inside.<br /> My wrecked mind recognized the woman immediately. She was the coffee waitress at our favorite café downtown that we visited frequently. Knowing it was her, crumbled my heart further.<br /> Both culprits finally noticed I stumbled upon them. Mason was wide-eyed in shock, stopping mid-thrust. The red-haired, named Melissa, stared at me too, her breasts displayed on the kitchen table. How could Mason, my Mason, have done this to me? I turned on my heels and ran out of the kitchen and through the front door of his apartment.<br /> The worst part of it was that Mason didn't even try to follow me. His action shattered me in more ways than one.<br /> I closed my eyes and shook the thought away. The memory made me queasy. I will not allow that loser to disturb my day.<br /> After completing my three assessments. I filed it. Placed it in my cabinet and walked out. I walked to the car waving my goodbyes to passing fellow teachers.<br /> When I got home. I parked my car on the side street. Carrying my basket, I sauntered to my door. As I placed the key to open, I forgot to check the post. Since the post boxes were just across the street, I jogged to it. I placed my basket down and grabbed the post box key from it. I ran across the street, opened my box and grabbed some mail, and returned home.<br /> Once in the kitchen, I went through the letters one by one. Car insurance. Forever 21 account bills, and a bunch of advert pamphlets. My eyes popped open as I finally came across a letter with interest. It was a white envelope addressed to me with my address. At the back of it was the address from Wentworth Prison.<br /> Oddly, I couldn't believe this inmate actually replied to me. Even though I was expecting this, I was surprised. I mean, I have never written randomly to a stranger before, and a criminal too! The thought suddenly became heavy.<br /> Nevertheless, I took my letter opener from the kitchen and neatly slid it open. I took out the letter and immediately noticed his fine handwriting. At least he's neat; the thought brought a smile to my face. Good start. Smiling like an idiot. I hesitated to read.<br /> Dear Miss Clarke,<br /> It confused me to get your letter.<br /> I honestly didn't volunteer to be on Pen Pal Prisoners. I'm sure you know what age I am ect, since you said you seen my details. I really don't need much encouragement. I just get by day by day here till my times up. That's how I usually deal with things. However, there might be other suggestive ways you could encourage me, sweetheart.<br /> To answer your questions. Prison works on a tight schedule. And life here is on a clock. Wake up is at 6:30am. 7:15am breakfast is served. We eat all our lunches and suppers in our cells. Roll calls happen during the day. 9am I start work for about 6 hours steaming sheets. Lunch is at 1pm. Supper at 5pm and the rest of the day, I pretty much have to myself. To keep busy, I usually exercise and walk in the yard.<br /> Yeah, there are books here in the library. A place I like to go to.<br /> Nobody asks how I feel. You don't have to bother about it. I mean, I've taken out time to write to this man. For crying out loud, I've been nothing but nice. And here he responds with a letter like this. I frowned.<br /> But my frown turned into anger. If he doesn't want positive and friendly encouragement during his time. So be it. I'm helpless to do anything about it. What's the point of all of this? Screw him, with a capital "S".<br /> And as for calling me sweetheart. "Aaaargh!" I huffed out, the nerve of that man. Clearly, inmate 29901 is a big fat jerk. It was infuriating. I needed a cup of hot green tea to soothe my nerves.<br /> <br /> Dimitri<br /> Out in the courtyard, I drew a deep breath as I did my fifty counts of pushups.<br /> "48... 49... 50." I heaved out. My muscles burned from the sit-ups and weights done before.<br /> Peter, another inmate, sat next to me doing his reps. He was talkative and annoying. I had to hear a bunch of nonsense about him grieving the fact that his wife hadn't written to him in weeks. I pretended to empathize by shaking my head.<br /> After my gym session, I was pleased to walk away. I walked to the bleachers on the side of the prison and sat on the second top bench. You had the complete view of the prison yard.<br /> I watched the other inmates in the yard. Some were walking or jogging around. Most were in their groups, sitting around make shift tables or huddled together on the ground gambling. Others stood with their backs against the prison walls, watching arguments about to start. Anything could spark a fight in this place. A few inmates walked aimlessly around.<br /> There's a lot to think about in prison. You got a lot of time on your hands. Scenes of your life plays in your head, like a movie.<br /> I thought about my girl, Roxanne. I thought about her raven black long hair, her hips, her curves, her dark eyes and her full hip sitting in tight jeans. She always knew how to use her body. And it drove me crazy. It's been a inferno of a long time in prison.<br /> I decided to give her a call with my minutes saved up. It's been six months since I heard from her. I called over time, but there were no answers. I hoped this time would be different.<br /> I walked over to the pay telephone. Luckily, the inmate before me just ended his call. I picked up the dialer and dialed Roxy's number. Desperate to hear her voice, to speak to her, to hear if she was doing alright and if she thought about me. I waited online. It just rang. I waited a few more moments.<br /> Nothing.<br /> I hung up. Banging my head against the payphone.<br /> <br /> ---<br /> I sat in my cell reading a book when an inmate came strolling by. It was about that time for mail call.<br /> "Inmate 29901," he came forward.<br /> "Yeah." I said, getting up from my seat.<br /> "You got mail," he continued, handing me a letter.<br /> I recognized it instantly. The light pink envelope was a dead giveaway. I took the letter. Is this going to be a thing now? I thought. I sat on my bed and ripped the envelope open. Took out the letter and read.<br /> Dear Mr. Hawke,<br /> Thank you for your letter. I was pleased that you replied. I'm disappointed, however, that you do not want to receive any FRIENDLY encouragements from me. I fully understand. I don't know your circumstances and only wish to lend a friendly ear.<br /> I didn't know that you didn't sign up for the program, but who knows, maybe it's fate we supposed to be writing to each other. Please know that I would still like to know if you are doing okay. I'm just a letter away if you need somebody to talk to.<br /> P.S. I don't approve of being called sweetheart, so please don't call me that. I was slightly surprised by this chick's letter, but in a good way.<br /> "Don't call you sweetheart, huh?" I uttered. I somewhat liked it. She had some spunk to her, I'll give her that.<br /> I don't know what it was, but she got me intrigued.<br /> Thinking back to my first letter, I agreed with her, I could be a prick. She was just trying to be kind. But I didn't know what to do with it. <br /> She's probably a very compassionate girl. I pictured her in my head and put pen to paper and wrote her a reply as kindly as I could. I want to ask her for a picture. Who knew that Julius Caesar will get them going. But classes were dragging, and the day was long. I was glad Kenny cancelled practice this week. I wasn't in the mood. Bell rang for home time, it couldn't come any sooner.<br /> I was exhausted, but nervous about tomorrow tonight. It was the big dinner with Arthur. Saturday came sooner than expected and I wasn't sure if I was fully ready for it.<br /> While driving in my car from school. I borrowed the black dress from Sassi for my dinner date tomorrow night. Sassi suggested I wear it since my clothes weren't dinner date charming, in Sassi's opinion. This was my first date post Mason, and I decided to be daring. I wanted to knock his socks off.<br /> I was grateful that Sassi wasn't home. My nerves were already on edge. She packed the dress carefully in a boutique bag, with a small note:<br /> Cinderella by day, SIN-derella by night!<br /> I suppressed a smile and rolled my eyes. I can't with Sassi, but I loved her nevertheless.<br /> After my quick stop. I checked my post box and collected a stack of letters inside. I returned home and was greeted with a meow at the door. I felt a tinge of sadness.<br /> It's been over a week now since I heard from him. I couldn't help but wonder if he rejected my photo I'd sent him with my last letter. Did he not like them? Did he not like me? I sighed as my mind clouded with possible reasons.<br /> I plopped on my green cushy couch and gathered myself towards myself. Maybe something kept him from writing, I debated. But my insecurities were rearing its ugly head once more. And rising slowly to the surface. This was not going to help one bit with my date with Arthur.<br /> "You send a guy your pic and then he ghosts you after," I said out loud to my cat. Pebbles clearly didn't have a care in the world.<br /> My phone rang, and I jilted in surprise. I checked my caller ID. It was my mum. I really need to beat her to the punch when it came to calling.<br /> "Hi mum," I said<br /> "Hi honey... Why are you so quiet?" Sending me on the guilt trip once again.<br /> "I'm sorry... I meant to call but-"<br /> "but-but, always buts," she interrupted.<br /> 'How are you doing, mum? Everything okay at home?" I continued.<br /> "Yes, sweetheart. But that's not why I'm calling. Have you heard the news? " Her voice sounded strained.<br /> "What news? What happened, mom?" I said, frowning. My mum's health wasn't the greatest.<br /> "It's Mason... He's engaged! " Her voice picked up a pitch. I didn't expect to hear his name again. Least of all by my mother, of all people. Everything sort of froze. And my stomach dropped at the news.<br /> "He proposed to that home wrecking witch," she continued.<br /> I fell silent. My mum didn't seem to notice.<br /> "Apparently, this happened last weekend. Aunt Matilda told me over brunch this morning... The audacity. I can't believe him. I was so hoping you two could have worked it out by now." My mum sounded almost weepy.<br /> Silence.<br /> "Honey?... Lillie?"<br /> "Huh?... sorry mum, something came up. I've got to go." And with that I ended the call.<br /> I know that was rude. But I couldn't face my mum to answer right now. My mind was still processing what I heard. Mason's engaged. And to Melissa. I couldn't help it. But just then, all the bad memories came flooding back.<br /> The cheating.<br /> The pain.<br /> And in this moment, I was sad. I was angry.<br /> My eyes stung, and I blinked hard. I hated myself for it. I had moved on from him, or I hoped I did. It was only eighteen months ago. But after your heart's been shattered like that. It can heal. But it can grow back jagged and skew. I never fully looked at love the same way again. To be honest, this news was hurting me.<br /> I couldn't help what I did next.<br /> I grabbed my phone. Typed his name on Instagram and saw his freshly posted pics. I shouldn't have done it and regretted the decision almost immediately.
