Constantly turning to Ibuprofen or Tylenol can be good for a quick fix, but the bad news is they just cover up the symptoms. Yes 2024-01-25 14:51 active 121 0 1329512221099564 ๐Ÿ˜Read More Chapters๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿ‘‰ My Alpha mate rejected me for my sister. But he soon regretted it after he drove me into the arms of another Alpha, or worse.

Chapter 1: Ayla
"Ma," I called down the hall. "Come on, Ma. They'll be here soon. You need to get out here."

"I'm coming," my mother yelled back. "Donโ€™t rush me.โ€

She came out of her bedroom and down the hall. I was grateful that she didnโ€™t seem to sway at all, and as she approached, the only scent wafting off her was mouthwash. And she actually seemed presentable. It was the first time in weeks.

Although, I shouldnโ€™t have been surprised. She always managed to look presentable in front of Kylee. Goddess forbid her precious baby learn the truth about her.

No, that was my burden to bear. And in truth, I accepted it willingly. I wanted to protect Kylee from that reality as much as Ma wanted to hide it from her. However, I will admit we had different reasons.

I waved Ma to the armchair in the living room while I went back into the kitchen to check on dinner. I was making Kyleeโ€™s favorites. It had been two months since my little sister had been home, and we were both excited. Even more exciting, she was bringing home her mate for the first time.

I was so happy for her. They had apparently met almost two. Years ago, when she visited the local college campus with her high school. I had no idea they had found each other until her freshman year of university. I had asked her why the secrecy, and she told me they needed to wait to make their relationship public because of his position in the pack. They announced their relationship a few months into her first year. Still, she kept putting off us meeting him even though they were only a couple hours away. Donโ€™t get me wrong, she told me all about him. Whenever we talked, she would just gush about how perfect he was. But it wasnโ€™t until a month ago that she finally admitted to us that he was our future Alpha.

Ma and I were ecstatic. We couldnโ€™t be more pleased. Especially me. Our current Alpha, Alpha Torin, was a good leader, a fair leader, and a good man. We were very blessed to have had his support after our father died.

Not that we knew him all that well, but he was the one who helped me get the family back on its feet after such a terrible loss. I knew he had a son, but I had never met him before. Again, itโ€™s not like we were exactly close to the Alpha at all. I doubt he ever really thought of us. He was just taking care of the members of his pack, and for that, I will always be grateful.

But I had heard that his son, Theo, was promising to be just as good an Alpha as his father. So I really couldnโ€™t have been more relieved that he was my sisterโ€™s mate. She would be properly looked after and taken care of, and she would be happy.

I was pulling the chicken out of the oven when I heard Ma from the living room.

โ€œThey're here,โ€ she sang.

I moved quickly. Getting out our nice serving dishes that were gifted to my parents at their mating ceremony, I started to plate dinner onto them. I was still transferring the food when I heard the front door open and the squeals of my mother and sister as they embraced. I finished my task and moved the dishes to the dining room table that was already set neatly. I smiled at my presentation and excitedly hurried to the living room.

I froze at the threshold. A scent overwhelmed my senses, causing my stomach to knot and my heart to race.

The tall, broad man standing next to my sister turned toward me and we locked eyes.

Mate.

I practically gagged trying to stifle the word from slipping from my mouth.

What was happening?

This was my sisterโ€™s mate.

Not mine.

This man was fated to Kylee.

So why was I having this reaction?

Better questionโ€ฆ

Why did HE seem to be having the same reaction?

His eyes were wide, pupils dilated, and they held my gaze with a vice-like grip as he, too, seemed frozen to where he stood.

Dasha, my wolf, bounced excitedly in my head, recognizing him and his wolf just as I was. It took a minute for her to understand the situation, but once she did, she started whimpering in the back of my mind.

This couldnโ€™t be happening.

What was happening?

I forced myself to address the situation as a whole. Fine, this was happening. Now, what is the best way to handle the situation? I wasnโ€™t going to break my sisterโ€™s heart. Absolutely not. I wouldnโ€™t let him either. Not right now. Weโ€™ll just get through dinner, and Iโ€™ll find a way to speak with him in private later.

I cleared my throat and plastered a smile on my face.

โ€œKylee, Iโ€™m so excited youโ€™re home,โ€ I said, opening my arms so she could jump into them like she had since she was little.

โ€œIโ€™ve missed you, sis,โ€ she said.

โ€œIโ€™ve missed you, too,โ€ I said quietly.

We separated, and she turned to the male behind her. โ€œTheo, this is my sister, Ayla. Ayla, this is my mate, Theo.โ€

Theoโ€™s hands were clenched into fists, and he forced a tight-jawed smile toward me. At least I was better at faking it them him. Geesh.

I nodded to him with a broad smile. I knew it didnโ€™t reach my eyes, but at least Ma and Kylee wouldnโ€™t notice.

โ€œItโ€™s lovely to meet you, Theo,โ€ I said. โ€œDinner is ready in the dining room. Why donโ€™t you guys go take a seat, and Iโ€™ll be right there. I need to tend to dessert first.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t take too long,โ€ Kylee said brightly. โ€œWe have some big news, and I donโ€™t think I can wait much longer.โ€

โ€œI promise Iโ€™ll be right there,โ€ I assured her as I rubbed her shoulder.

Kylee grabbed Ma by the arm and led her to the dining room. Theo followed a few steps behind. He had to pass me to get through. Right as he approached, I turned my body to ensure we didnโ€™t touch. He paused in front of me for a moment. I looked up to meet his eyes.

There was anger, confusion, desire, and possibly even hurt reflecting in his eyes that I couldnโ€™t help but notice were the color of honey. He had questions. I subtly shook my head at him. Hoping and silently begging that he knew we couldnโ€™t do this here.

The sound of Kyleeโ€™s laugh from the other room made me jump and then quickly retreat to the kitchen. I grabbed the homemade cheesecake from the fridge and set it on the counter for later. I listened to the others conversing in the next room and quietly slipped out the back door.

I stood on the porch and took several deep breaths. I felt a lump start to form in my throat and quickly pushed it down. This wasnโ€™t the time to cry. So, I did what I usually do instead of crying.

I released a string of curses.

โ€œWhat is happening? Why is this happening? This ISNโ€™T happening,โ€ I whispered with the force of a yell.

โ€˜Our mate.โ€™ Dasha insisted.

โ€œNo, heโ€™s not,โ€ I said back to her. โ€œHeโ€™s Kyleeโ€™s. There must be some kind of mistake. Just get through dinner like nothing is going on, and weโ€™ll figure that out later. Easy.โ€

I didnโ€™t believe myself, neither did Dasha, but I didnโ€™t have time to deal with that. So, I took two more deep breaths and went back into the house. I was almost to the dining room when I heard the last part of what Kylee was saying, and again, I was left frozen at the threshold.

โ€œโ€ฆ our mating ceremony is in three months.โ€ Kylee looked up at me. โ€œOh, Ayla, Iโ€™m sorry. I just couldnโ€™t hold back any longer. Arenโ€™t you happy for us?โ€

I put the same fake smile back on. โ€œOf course Iโ€™m happy for you,โ€ I said. โ€œYou deserve the best.โ€

I took my seat at the table, ignoring the fact that I was left sitting directly across from Theo. His eyes were boring into me, and my face felt like it was on fire. I started dishing out food and passing plates. I didnโ€™t say much over dinner. Instead, I just listened to Kylee and Ma talk about all the ideas they had for the mating ceremony. Theo didnโ€™t say much either but slowly started to do a better job hiding his discomfort with the situation.

It took everything to ignore the touches they shared, pushing down the jealousy that kept surging through me. As soon as I saw the opportunity, I started clearing the plates. As I was bringing in the dessert, my phone dinged in my pocket, and I had never been more grateful.
I pulled it out and checked the screen.

โ€œIโ€™m so sorry. Please, excuse me. This is important. I have to take it.โ€

Ma waved me off, and Kylee didnโ€™t even seem to notice. Theo glared at me, but to be honest, I didnโ€™t really care.

I answered the phone as I left the dining room and exited out the back door again.

โ€œHey, Zeff. Whatโ€™s up?โ€ I said as I walked to the back of the yard.

โ€œHowโ€™s the dinner going?โ€ Zeff, my best friend and colleague, asked.

โ€œItโ€™s full of excitement, thatโ€™s for sure,โ€ I said, hoping he didnโ€™t catch on to the kind of excitement I was feeling.

He chuckled on the other line. โ€œI canโ€™t wait to hear all about it,โ€ he said with a hint of sarcasm. โ€œI hate to interrupt, but Carla wanted me to check if you were done with those chapters.โ€

โ€œOh, um, yeah, I just finished them up this morning. I was going to run through another round of editing, but I can go ahead and send them over tonight.โ€ I doubted I would have the mental capacity to deal with editing today.

โ€œPerfect. Iโ€™ll let her know to watch for them,โ€ Zeff said.

โ€œMhmm.โ€

โ€œHey, you okay, Ayls?โ€ Zeff asked.

I stiffened as a mouthwatering scent hit my nose. I knew who was standing behind me. โ€œYeah, I just gotta go. Talk to you tomorrow.โ€

Chapter 2: Theo
I fought against the urges her scent was influencing as I stalked up to her, including the rage that she was currently talking to another male. But more importantly, the urge to grab her and take her against the nearest tree. My wolf was going crazy about the idea, but he would learn fast that that was never going to happen.

I wouldnโ€™t accept her.

Knowing what I knew about her, that would never happen.

She hung up the phone and turned to face me.

โ€œThis wonโ€™t happen,โ€ I spat out before she had a chance to speak.
Her jaw clenched, and her silvery-gray eyes stared into mine for a few short moments. But I couldnโ€™t read a thing behind them.

โ€œI absolutely agree,โ€ she stated evenly.

My wolf growled and snarled inside me, demanding to know what I was doing. I pushed down the hurt that hit me when she didnโ€™t fight me. Her reaction just proved why this needed to be done. I could never be with someone so cold and self-absorbed as her. There was no way someone like her could ever be my Luna.

โ€˜Donโ€™t know her.โ€™ Kieran yelled in my head.

I knew enough.

โ€œKylee is my mate. Not you. I, Theo Arden, future Alpha of the Greytooth Pack, reject you, Ayla Garner, as my mate and Luna.โ€ Kieran was snapping his teeth, pushing to take control to stop this.

โ€œI, Ayla Garner, accept your rejection and relinquish my claim as your mate and Luna.โ€

My wolf howled in pain. A pain that was mirrored within me as it felt like my heart was being ripped apart. It was the bond breaking. Releasing me from the tie that bound us together.
She stood there like nothing happened.

How could she stand there like nothing had happened?

She really didnโ€™t feel anything, did she? It was so easy for her to let us go.

โ€˜Mate wants me.โ€™

I grimaced. He meant her wolf. Her wolf wanted mine. He could sense her. She was even denying her wolf. I couldnโ€™t stand it anymore. I needed to get away from her.

I stormed back into the house, returning to the woman the goddess should have made my mate. I returned to the dining room to find her mother and her still deep in conversation. I was grateful she hadnโ€™t seemed to notice my absence or the change in my mood. It wasnโ€™t surprising. She was excited about seeing her family and sharing the news with them.

I had been, too, until her sister walked into the room. The scent had engulfed me, driving me to seek out the source like a lifeline. When I saw her, her beauty took my breath away. She was petit but strong, with long legs and perfect curves. She had a mass of caramel-blonde hair that cascaded over her shoulders, framing a face with plump lips and intense gray eyes that shined green in the light. I couldnโ€™t help but want her. I recognized who she was to me immediately.

But then I noticed her narrow nose and soft jawline were familiar. Her fair skin had a sun-kissed glow that I had always found attractive. Once I realized she had similar features to Kylee, I knew this was her sister, Ayla.

Kylee had told me on many occasions how her sister had changed after the death of their father. She was there for Kylee at first, but in less than a year, she started spending all her time away from home. She ended up dropping out of the private school her parents had worked so hard to send her to. Eventually, Kylee lost track of what she was doing with her life.

Kylee was there for her when she was around, trying to be supportive. But she wasnโ€™t the sister she used to love. What bothered her most was Aylaโ€™s treatment of their mother. Ayla still lived in the house with her, but Kylee always got the impression that helping their mother was just a burden. She worried their mother would be left with no one to take care of her, and she wasnโ€™t in the best of health anymore.

โ€œI have an idea,โ€ I interrupted. They both looked up at me expectantly. โ€œWhy doesnโ€™t your mother come to stay with us for a while? At least until the ceremony? We have the room in the packhouse, and Iโ€™m sure you and my mother would appreciate the extra input.โ€

Both their faces lit up.

โ€œReally? We can do that?โ€ Kylee said happily.

โ€œOf course,โ€ I said with a smile.

โ€œThank you.โ€

Kylee jumped up from the table and threw her arms around me, kissing me sweetly. I ignored the growls coming from Kieran. Seeing their reaction told me I had made the exact right decision. Despite what was burning in my chest told me.

This was who I was supposed to be with. Not Ayla.

โ€˜Keep saying. Maybe believe.โ€™

I told him to shut up, and he retreated into the back of my mind, cutting himself off from me.

He would get over it. Once the bond was completely severed, he would understand this was the right thing for us and the pack.

---
Ayla

I had managed to get myself together enough to rejoin my family. The pain that seared through me from Theoโ€™s rejection and my subsequent acceptance almost brought me to my knees. It took all of my strength to keep my body from shaking, praying he didnโ€™t notice the blood coming from my palms. I had clenched my fists so hard trying to stay on my feet that I broke the skin.

When he finally left, I released the sob that was the only thing capable of coming out of my mouth. But I didnโ€™t let the tears fall. Not yet. They couldnโ€™t know.

So, I steadied my breathing and went back into my house. I was surprised to find that Kylee and Ma werenโ€™t in the dining room anymore. They werenโ€™t in the living room either. But Theo was.

โ€œTheyโ€™re in your motherโ€™s room packing,โ€ he said coldly.

โ€œPacking?โ€ What was he talking about?

He stepped closer to me, lowering his voice. โ€œI think itโ€™s best that you keep your distance from Kylee for a while. We donโ€™t want her finding out about this. But I know sheโ€™ll want her mother to be a part of the ceremony planning. So sheโ€™s coming back with us.โ€

I felt like he just slapped me in the face. As if I would ever tell her. Thatโ€™s why I was doing this. So that I wouldnโ€™t break my baby sisterโ€™s heart. I gave him what he wanted, and now he was going to keep me from my family?

Dasha was confused and in pain, whimpering in my head because she didnโ€™t understand how he could be so cruel to us.

โ€˜Because he doesnโ€™t want to deal with the trouble,โ€™ I told her, fighting the tears that were forming. โ€˜If this is how he is going to treat us, fine. It just makes this easier.โ€™

โ€œIf thatโ€™s what you think is best,โ€ I said to Theo through gritted teeth.

โ€œKylee,โ€ he called out, not breaking eye contact. โ€œLetโ€™s get going.โ€

My sister came prancing into the room. โ€œAlready?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s getting late. Letโ€™s head to the hotel for the night. Weโ€™ll swing by in the morning to pick up your mother.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ she said brightly before turning to me. โ€œWhat about you, Ayla? Youโ€™re coming with, too, right?โ€

I opened my mouth to speak, but Theo decided to answer for me.

โ€œWe were just talking about that. Ayla has some things going on with work and canโ€™t get away.โ€

I gave her a tight smile. โ€œYes, Iโ€™m sorry. But I will try to come out there as soon as I can.โ€

โ€œOh, okay, I understand. But Iโ€™ll make sure we have a room ready for you whenever you can come.โ€

โ€œOf course. I canโ€™t wait,โ€ I said, my heart breaking again, knowing Theo wouldnโ€™t allow me to be there with her.

We all said our goodbyes, and they left. Ma was still standing at the window watching them drive off when I went to clean up the dishes in the kitchen. She finally came in behind me and started opening another bottle of wine. We had gone through four during dinner already. And I barely touched my glass.

โ€œMa, youโ€™ve had enough for the night,โ€ I said calmly.

โ€œOh, come on. Itโ€™s a celebration,โ€ Ma said. โ€œItโ€™s not every day you find out your baby is going to be a Luna.โ€

โ€œMa, you can celebrate more tomorrow. You need to finish packing,โ€ I said, gently taking the bottle from her hand. โ€œIโ€™m sure Kylee and Theo will be here first thing in the morning.โ€

โ€œWe can celebrate together while you help me pack,โ€ she said, grabbing the bottle back from me. โ€œThen Iโ€™ll help you pack.โ€

I winced. This wasnโ€™t going to end well. โ€œIโ€™m not coming, Ma.โ€

She stopped with the glass halfway to her lips. โ€œWhat do you mean youโ€™re not coming?โ€ she asked with a pout. โ€œYou have to be there. Kylee is going to be mated. I told her we would help pay for the ceremony.โ€

I winced again. She meant me. I would be helping pay for the ceremony. Ma didnโ€™t have a penny to her name.

โ€œI will send you however much you need. But I have to stay close to work for the next few weeks. Iโ€™ll come out later. We have six months to get ready,โ€ I said, guiding her down the hall.

โ€œThatโ€™s not the point. You should be there for her. This is a big deal. Donโ€™t be so selfish, Ayla.โ€

Her words stung, but they werenโ€™t unexpected. This was kind of the norm when she got like this. I know she didnโ€™t really mean it. At least, she wouldnโ€™t mean it when she was sober. It was just her way of coping with her abandonment issues. I got her into her bedroom and set her on the bed. I changed her into her nightgown and tucked her in. I left her sitting up against the pillows while I pulled clothes out of her closet, asking if she wanted to take specific items.

Pretty soon, she started to tip to the side. I coaxed her to lie down and tucked her all the way in. She was asleep in seconds. I hurried through the rest of her packing. Stuffing two large suitcases as full as I could before carrying them out to the living room. Then I locked the front door, finished the last of the dishes, and slipped out into the backyard.

I stripped off my clothes as I headed for the forest, desperate to get under its protective shadows. As soon as I passed the treeline, I shifted, taking off at full speed. I let Dasha feel all the pain. I didnโ€™t try to hold her back anymore.

We would mourn the loss of our fated mate. The loss of the one person who was supposed to see us for who we were. The one person who was supposed to always put us first, without demands or expectations. We would mourn the loss of never getting to experience that.
But we wouldnโ€™t mourn him.

We ran until we could barely breathe. Until Dasha stopped at the edge of our pond โ€” our place of solace โ€” and let out a heartwrenching howl into the night air. Shifting at the end as she retreated back into my mind, out of reach to heal her broken heart, while I let the torrent of tears finally fall.

I fell to the forest floor, curling into myself as the sobs wracked my body, intensifying the burn that was still there from our bond being ripped from my heart. I lay there and cried until I had nothing left in my body, and my eyes drifted closed on the image of the moon and the stars reflecting on our peaceful little pond.

Chapter 3: Ayla
I woke up to the first rays of sunshine heating my body. I was grateful for the warm night of mid-summer. Otherwise, I probably wouldnโ€™t have made it through the night in my human form. My wolf still hadnโ€™t re-emerged, and I couldnโ€™t say I blamed her. The prospect of seeing Theo again this morning was hard enough for me. Dasha wouldnโ€™t be able to handle sensing his wolf again. She had told me he wasnโ€™t happy about the rejection.

But it had to be done.

And we had to accept it.

I wasnโ€™t going to break Kyleeโ€™s heart like that. Especially if he actually loved her that much.

She would be happy. And I had to find a way to make that enough.

I sat up and looked out at the reflective pool. I stood up and I walked into the water. I submerged myself completely, washing my body clean of Theo, the mate bond, and every dream of finding my soulmate.

The ritual wasnโ€™t new to me. I did this after my father died. I came here to wash away the grief. And when my mother started to fall apart. When she started drinking heavier and gambling and I realized we were running out of the money Dad had left us. I had to make some tough decisions to keep the family going. Once I made them, I came back here to forget the person I was. So I could be who my family needed me to be.

I came here to wash away all of the what-ifs and what-could-have-beens.

When I emerged, I started the long walk back home.

When I made it back to the house, I could hear the faint sound of voices coming from inside. They had already arrived. I quickly collected my clothes from the lawn, putting them back on before heading inside.

I had to pause when I opened the door, bracing myself against the intoxicating scent that belonged to Theo. I had hoped the effects would have lessoned by now since we broke our bond, but I wasnโ€™t that lucky. But again, I shook off the feeling and prepared to push through this like everything was normal.

I walked through the kitchen and into the living room, where, again, I found Theo alone. I could hear Ma and Kylee down the hall, and I prayed they would be out soon. Theoโ€™s hands clenched when his eyes met mine. It wasnโ€™t hard to read the look of disgust he held in them.

I failed to hide the hitch in my breath, but I still managed to raise my chin. I wasnโ€™t about to let him see how he still affected me. Just a few more minutes and we would both be rid of each other, at least for a little while. Hopefully, it would be enough time for the bond to dissipate and free us of all this.

โ€œThere you are,โ€ Kyleeโ€™s voice rang down the hall.

I turned to her with a smile, returning her hug as she wrapped her arms around me. I held on for a minute, letting her proximity calm me.

โ€œWhere have you been? Why is your hair wet?โ€

โ€œShe went out again last night,โ€ Ma said with bitterness in her voice.

I had to stop myself from rolling my eyes.

โ€œMa, I just went for a run,โ€ I said.

โ€œAll night?โ€ she said haughtily.

How would you know? You were passed out drunk. I cleared my throat and brushed it off.

โ€œI guess you guys need to get on the road,โ€ I said, smiling down at Kylee as I rubbed her arms. Looking at the face of the girl I had practically raised since she was nine, I couldnโ€™t stop the lump in my throat. โ€œIโ€™m gonna miss you.โ€

โ€œHey, weโ€™ll see you soon. Come up whenever youโ€™re ready,โ€ she said as she gave me another hug.

โ€œI love you,โ€ I whispered.

โ€œI love you.โ€

She pulled away and I turned to my mother, taking her in my arms despite her hesitation.

โ€œTake care of yourself, Ma.โ€

โ€œKylee, letโ€™s get going,โ€ Theo said from the door.

With a few more smiles and waves, they walked out, closing the door behind them. I was standing in an empty room in an empty house. The silence was deafening. And it all came crashing down. I sank to my knees, begging the goddess to just let it all go away, just for a little while. I just wanted to feel numb.

I lost track of how long I sat in that spot, staring without seeing. I didnโ€™t even know Zeff was there until I felt him grip my arms.

โ€œAyls, what?! Whatโ€™s wrong?โ€ he asked, brushing hair out of my face, forcing me to look at him. โ€œAyla, what is going on?โ€

โ€œI found my mate,โ€ I said, the corner of my lips tipping up mockingly. โ€œHeโ€™s scheduled to be mated to my sister.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Zeff exclaimed, anger and concern twisting his handsome features.

Zeff was a good man. He had been there for me when no one else was. He was the only person who knew everything I went through. And here he was, listening to me tell him about meeting Theo, the mating ceremony, and my rejection. Why couldnโ€™t he have been my mate? He should have been.

โ€œCome on,โ€ he said, lifting me up. โ€œYouโ€™re coming to stay with me.โ€

I didnโ€™t protest. The goddess had given me this one little blessing. I was numb. Zeff held me up by my waist and led me out to his car. He tucked me into the passenger seat and disappeared into the house again, only to emerge a few minutes later with a duffel bag in hand.

He pulled out and drove us the twenty minutes to his house. Just like before, he helped me inside, this time sitting me on the big, comfy leather couch in his living room. I loved this couch. We had spent a lot of time on this couch, watching movies, talking about books, brainstorming ideas for work. This was like a second home to me. But even that felt wrong now.

Zeffโ€™s phone rang in his pocket. He cursed as he pulled it out, checking the screen.

โ€œGod,โ€ he said. โ€œHoney, I have to take this. Iโ€™ll be right back, okay?โ€

I nodded. He answered the call, kissing my head before walking out of the room. Alone again, I pulled my feet up onto the couch, tucking them into my chest as I wrapped my arms around my knees. Silent tears began to fall. The numbness was wearing off.

It was time to snap out of it. I needed to move on.

I heard Zeff coming back, and I quickly wiped the tears from my eyes. No one had seen me cry. Not since the night my father died. I wasnโ€™t about to change that now. Not over someone like Theo. He paused, giving me a look. He knew Iโ€™d been crying. It always bugged him when I did that. Not that I often cried anyway, let alone enough for anyone to see it. But Zeff was always trying to get me to open up more.

He came and sat next to me, putting an arm over my shoulder and pulling me into him. I let myself relax some. This was the first thing since Theo walked into my life that felt normal, felt comfortable. He leaned his head on mine, rubbing his fingers along my arm.

โ€œDid you get my laptop?โ€ I asked quietly.

His chest rose and fell heavily. โ€œYes, but weโ€™re not going to worry about that right now.โ€

I pushed off of him, going to the duffel bag he left by the door.

โ€œI have to send Carla my chapters. I didnโ€™t get to it last night.โ€

โ€œAyla,โ€ Zeff said, getting up and coming to pull me away from the bag. โ€œYouโ€™re not going to do this. Youโ€™re not going to bury yourself in work. Youโ€™re going to deal with this โ€” weโ€™re going to deal with this together. Screw him, okay. Heโ€™s dumb. You deserve so much better than one who doesnโ€™t see how incredible you are.โ€

I wanted to roll my eyes, but it wasnโ€™t just about him.

โ€œHe took my family, Zeff. I would have gotten over him just rejecting me because of Kylee. At least she would be safe and happy.โ€

โ€œScrew them,โ€ Zeff said angrily.

โ€œZeff,โ€ I warned. He wasnโ€™t exactly Kyleeโ€™s biggest fan. There was a big age difference between the two of them, and she kind of annoyed him. But he always respected how protective I was of her.

โ€œNo, Ayla. Iโ€™m sick of this. They either treat you like a servant or a bank. They donโ€™t care what their actions do to you as long as they keep getting what they want."

"Zeff, thatโ€™s not fair,โ€ I protested. My family wasnโ€™t perfect, but they were my family. They loved me in their own way.

He moved to say something else but thought better of it.

โ€œFine,โ€ he conceded. โ€œThen Kyleeโ€™s happy. He can try to keep you from going to see them, but theyโ€™ll be back to see you. You believe that, donโ€™t you?โ€

I hesitated for a moment, but I did believe that. โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œOkay, then get over him.โ€ He took a step toward me, reaching up to hold my chin. โ€œHeโ€™s not the only one who can take care of you, Ayla. He may be stvpid enough not to want you, but Iโ€™m not.โ€

My breath caught in my throat. He had told me about his feelings before, but we both avoided going down that road with each other. We knew we could find our fated mates at any time, and we didnโ€™t want to deny each other that.

โ€œMove in here with me, Ayls,โ€ Zeff said. โ€œThereโ€™s nothing stopping us now.โ€

โ€œZeff, you still have a mate out there somewhere.โ€

โ€œAyla, stop. Iโ€™m thirty-four and well-traveled. If I was going to find her, I would have long before now. We both know that.โ€

Suddenly his lips were on mine. I was shocked, but mostly because it felt good. I felt wanted. I kissed him back, not wanting to give that feeling up. I leaned into him โ€” until Dasha came charging to the forefront, growling and snarling that someone who wasnโ€™t our mate was touching us.

I ripped myself from Zeffโ€™s embrace. Breathing heavily, the pain of the severed bond renewed. I clutched my chest.

โ€œAyla.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t. The bond. Itโ€™s still there. It hasnโ€™t faded yet.โ€

Zeff pulled me into his arms. โ€œOkay. Itโ€™s okay. We can wait. Weโ€™ll take it slow. But I want you here with me. Youโ€™re not staying in that house alone.โ€

I rested my head on him. โ€œOkay.โ€

He squeezed me tighter. I still didnโ€™t know if we could make this work, but I wanted to try.

Chapter 4: Theo
It had been a week since I had gone home with Kylee. Seven days and a hundred miles away, and the bond was still there. The burning in my chest wouldnโ€™t go away. I didnโ€™t understand and it was driving me crazy. I had been in an awful mood because of it.

I had taken to holing up in my office most of the time. I didnโ€™t want to snap at Kylee, or her mother, which had become hard to avoid by the third day. They didnโ€™t deserve that. Kylee definitely didnโ€™t deserve that. I was glad I had a good reason for me being so busy all of a sudden.

Alpha was sick. He was diagnosed with a progressive disease almost a year ago. It had gotten to the point that he and my mother were concerned about the toll the Alpha role was taking on him. So, he decided it was time to hand the title down to me. It wasnโ€™t official yet. We were planning on making the change at the same time as Kyleeโ€™s and my mating ceremony. Actually, thatโ€™s why I decided to make Kylee my official mate. Alphaโ€™s were always stronger with a strong Luna by their side. With the circumstances of my fatherโ€™s abdication, our pack needed to be as strong as possible.

But there was still a lot to take care of and a lot I had to learn about being an Alpha before that time. So it wasnโ€™t hard to convince her that it was the stress that was causing me to be distant.

There was a knock on my office door, and Kylee poked her head in before I had a chance to answer. She walked around my desk with a bright smile.

โ€œThere you are, mate,โ€ she cooed, sitting in my lap. โ€œYouโ€™ve been up here all day.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, babe. Iโ€™ve been working.โ€

She ran a hand up my chest, leaning in to kiss me. Kieranโ€™s growl started immediately. He had spent the whole week giving me the silent treatment, except when Kylee was around. Then all he did was growl and snarl. It was getting exhausting.

Kylee pulled away. โ€œI know. I understand. I just wanted to check on you.โ€

โ€œThanks,โ€ I said with a smile. She really was sweet. โ€œIโ€™m fine, just knee-deep in all this paperwork. Did you need anything?โ€

She tried to hide her pout, but I saw it for a moment.

โ€œWhat is it, Ky?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to bother you. Youโ€™re already so busy.โ€

โ€œYou can ask me for anything. Donโ€™t ever feel bad for doing so,โ€ I insisted.

Her face brightened. โ€œWell, thereโ€™s this necklace of my motherโ€™s. She wants me to wear it for our mating ceremony, but it was left at the house. I called Ayla to have her bring it to me when she came up, but she wonโ€™t be able to make it for a few more weeks.โ€

I gripped the arm of the chair at hearing her name. At hearing that Kylee spoke to her. I fought the urge to ask how she was. Knowing I shouldnโ€™t care.

โ€œDo you really need it sooner than that? We have months until the ceremony.โ€

โ€œWell, I have my first dress appointment on Tuesday. I would really like to have it so we can match it to the perfect dress,โ€ Kylee said, leaning into me, tracing her finger along the collar of my shirt.

I sighed. โ€œOkay, Iโ€™ll send someone to pick it up. Just send me the details to pass along.โ€

She kissed me again, accompanied by my wolfโ€™s protests again, and pulled away with a smile. โ€œThank you, baby. Youโ€™re the best.โ€ She moved to get up but paused. โ€œAre you coming to see me tonight?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll try. If I donโ€™t get done here too late.โ€

โ€œYou better. We miss you.โ€

โ€˜Evie doesnโ€™t.โ€™

Evie was Kyleeโ€™s wolf. Kieran had never had a problem with Evie, but he never really showed much interest in her either. It wasnโ€™t that surprising. Our wolves only reacted to their fated mates. The only way to change that was to mark someone else and be marked by them. So I had never been too worried about it. But now I was. If I couldnโ€™t completely sever the bond between me and Ayla, he could end up taking control and stop me from marking Kylee.
I would need to do something about this.

โ€œI miss you, too. I promise Iโ€™ll work something out soon.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ she said with a sigh. โ€œIโ€™ll let you get back to work then.โ€
She kissed me on the cheek and sashayed out of my office. I couldnโ€™t keep avoiding her. It would hurt her if I stopped showing interest in her. I didnโ€™t want to do that. I had to do something.

---

I decided to drive down to Kyleeโ€™s house myself. I left early the following morning before anyone else woke up. I wanted to avoid any questions. I broke every speed limit on the way. I wanted to get there and get back before too many people noticed I was gone.
It shouldnโ€™t be too hard. Iโ€™d get the necklace, Iโ€™d reject Ayla again, making sure it stuck this time, and Iโ€™d go back home.

But when I pulled up to the house, something twisted in my gut. I cut the engine to the car and grabbed the house key I had gotten from Kyleeโ€™s keyring. If Ayla was home, I didnโ€™t want to scare her by barging in, so I knocked first. There was no answer, and I didnโ€™t hear any movement inside. I tested the doorknob, and it was locked. I let myself in with the key, and the feeling in my gut returned as soon as I stepped into the house.

No one had been here in a while. All the scents, although still easily detected, were too faded to have been recent. Including Aylaโ€™s. Her invigorating scent of oranges and cloves invaded my nostrils, but it wasnโ€™t nearly as strong as it should have been. Had Ayla not been here since we left? Kieran paced in my head. What if something happened to her?

My heart rate sped up, my hands balled into fists. I made my way through the house, looking for any signs that something had occurred here. I went to their motherโ€™s room first. It all seemed in order. Even the jewelry box was untouched. I grabbed the whole box, not bothering to look through it for the particular piece Kylee wanted. Then I checked Kyleeโ€™s old room. It, too, seemed unbothered.

I paused outside what had to be Aylaโ€™s room, my hand gripping the doorknob tightly. I could smell her scent through the wood. I had to brace myself, both against the onslaught of her scent hitting me and what I may find inside. I turned the knob and pushed the door open.

I had to grip the door jamb to keep Kieran from forcing the shift. All he wanted to do was roll around in here, gathering up Aylaโ€™s delicious smell, rubbing his over everything that was hers. He wanted to stake his claim. Absolutely not. I managed to push him back, but he came surging back the moment we looked at the scene before us.

The place wasnโ€™t trashed, but there were definitely signs that someone had left in a hurry. Clothes were hanging out of half-open drawers, shoes had been scattered out of the closet, and there was no sign of any electronics or chargers. And then I caught it.

There was another scent in the room.

I moved to the dresser, grabbing a shirt from a drawer and sniffing it. This time, I was the one who growled, my wolf in chorus along with me. The scent was male. It was faint, he wasnโ€™t here long, but mixed in with the distinctive scent of my mate, I could pick it out anywhere. From the trail, it seemed as if he was the one who packed up her things.

The question was, did he take her or did she go willingly?

Either way, we would find her.

I stormed out of the house. Tossing the jewelry box in the passenger seat, I took my phone out and searched for the number for the publishing house Kylee said Ayla worked for. I punched it in as soon as it pulled up. A receptionist picked up.

โ€œI need to speak to Ayla Garner,โ€ I barked into the phone.

โ€œJust a moment,โ€ she said, putting me on hold for a moment. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, sir. She doesnโ€™t have a meeting scheduled for today.โ€

โ€œWhen will she be in next?โ€

โ€œHer next meeting isnโ€™t until next Thursday, sir.โ€

What did she mean she wouldnโ€™t be in until Thursday? That was almost a whole week. What meeting was she talking about? Kylee said she was some kind of assistant.

โ€œThis is herโ€ฆ sisterโ€™s mate. Kylee and their mother have been trying to get a hold of her, and theyโ€™re worried. Do you have a phone number or address for her?โ€ I know it was low to use Kylee like that, but it was the only way I might have gotten her to give me that information.

โ€œOh, actually, it does look like she had added a forwarding address to her profile,โ€ the receptionist said.

I punched in the address as she rattled it off. I hung up without even saying anything else and tore out of the driveway. My knuckles turned white as I gripped the steering wheel. I followed the GPS to the address, pulling into the drive of a large, two-story house in a nice neighborhood. Parking half on the lawn, I didnโ€™t even close the car door before taking the front steps two at a time.

I banged on the door until I heard movement inside. A man opened it. It was the male I smelled in Aylaโ€™s room. Before he could say anything, I lunged at him, my hands grabbing the front of his shirt and practically lifting him off the ground.

โ€œWhat have you done with her? I smell her all over you. Where is she?โ€

He pushed me off him, his eyes glaring at me with recognition and disdain.

โ€œYou must be Theo.โ€

Chapter 5: Theo
โ€œWhat is going on?โ€ Aylaโ€™s voice floated down to me as she ran down the stairs. She froze halfway down the moment she laid eyes on me. โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€

A silk robe hung open, revealing the shorts and cut-off tank top she wore underneath, her caramel-colored hair flowing loosely around her shoulders. She was gorgeous. And clearly not in distress. I took a step toward her as my rage grew.

โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€ I spat back.

โ€œThatโ€™s none of your concern,โ€ the male interjected.

I turned on him again, a rumbling growl emanating from my chest, my claws extending. I was ready to rip his throat out.

โ€œStop,โ€ Ayla yelled, coming the rest of the way down the stairs and stepping between the two of us. โ€œZeff, go to work.โ€

โ€œAbsolutely not. Iโ€™m not leaving you here with him. Not in the state heโ€™s in.โ€

โ€œI would never hurt her.โ€ Kieran was ready to burst from my skin. How dare this air head think we would ever lay a hand on her.

โ€œWe both know thatโ€™s a load of nonsense.โ€

โ€œZeff, youโ€™re not helping. Shut the up and leave. Go to work,โ€ Ayla insisted.

โ€œAylaโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI said go.โ€ Her expression softened a little. โ€œIโ€™ll call you later.โ€

The Zeff guy shot me another hate-filled look before exiting out the open front door. We stood in silence until the sound of his engine faded.

โ€œAre you sllepping with him?โ€

Her eyes went wide, then narrowed as she took a step forward. โ€œAre you doing that with my sister?โ€

A strangled snarl escaped me, but she started speaking again before I could recover from her accusation.

โ€œWhat I do with a male โ€” or anyone for that matter โ€” is none of your business.โ€

โ€œWhat?! It isnโ€™t.โ€ Electricity passed through the air between us. โ€œHe has no right to put his hands on you.โ€

โ€œHe does if I want him to,โ€ she yelled, not only holding her ground against the alpha energy I was exuding but taking another step toward me. โ€œI donโ€™t belong to anyone, remember? I have no mate.โ€

I lost it. My hand was around her neck and my lips was on hers before I even knew what I had done. But I didnโ€™t stop. I couldnโ€™t stop. Sparks of intense electricity shot through me, invigorating all my senses. I pushed her to open for me, my tongue seeking hers. God, she tasted so good. She returned the kiss, her arousal mingling in the air.

โ€œMINE.โ€

She pushed me off her with force.

โ€œGet off.โ€

I took a step toward her again but she backed away.

โ€œDonโ€™t you dare hurt Kylee like this.โ€

โ€œLike you care about your sister getting hurt,โ€ I spat, but for some reason, I instantly regretted it. But I couldnโ€™t take it back. I wouldnโ€™t take it back.

โ€œExcuse me?โ€ Pure rage radiated off of her, her eyes turning an icy blue.

โ€œYou abandoned Kylee a long time ago. Putting your own life ahead of hers while she was left behind.โ€

Aylaโ€™s face paled. Every ounce of anger seemed to drain from her instantly, that blue fire fading from her eyes.

โ€œWhat did you just say?โ€

โ€œYou stopped being a sister to Kylee years ago. You disappeared all the time, leaving her alone with a mother who was struggling to keep everything together.โ€

Aylaโ€™s posture completely changed. She almost went completely limp in front of me, stumbling until her back hit the wall. Her faรงade cracked.

โ€œThatโ€™s what she told you? She said that?โ€ her voice was almost a whisper.

Kieran was going insane in my head, telling me to shut up, to just stop talking. Urging me to stop hurting her. Because I was hurting her. I had struck a nerve, a very deep one, and I wouldnโ€™t stop. She had to break the bond. Once and for all. If it meant I had to break her to do it, I would.

โ€œShe told me everything. She told me how you would keep things from her and your mother. That you would be out at all hours of the night when you were a teenager. How you dropped out of high school, waisting the tuition your parents worked so hard for.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œI could never be with someone as cold and heartless as you.โ€

Aylaโ€™s head snapped up. Her eyes a steely gray as she resolved herself to something I couldnโ€™t figure out but would soon find out.

โ€œI, Ayla Garner, reject you, Theo Arden, as my mate. I relinquish my claim as your mate and Luna.โ€

I gritted my teeth as Kieran howled in my head, screaming for me not to accept it.

โ€œI, Theo Arden, accept your rejection.โ€ The pain in my chest amplified, but I could still feel the bond. โ€œWeโ€™ve done this before. Itโ€™s not working.โ€

โ€œYour wolf has to accept it,โ€ she said.

โ€œYours didnโ€™t.โ€

โ€œDidnโ€™t she?โ€ Ayla said.

You said she didnโ€™t want to break the bond.

โ€˜She didnโ€™t. Still accepted.โ€™

How was that possible? Our wolves were primal creatures. They were animals, after all. They werenโ€™t ones to deny themselves what they wanted. Not without a very good reason.

โ€œTell your wolf to accept it,โ€ Ayla said with a crack in her voice.

The muscles in my jaw tightened to a point I thought my teeth would shatter. The noise in my head from Kieran becoming almost unbearable.

โ€œHe wonโ€™t.โ€

โ€œMake him,โ€ she forced out.

โ€œI canโ€™t.โ€

โ€œHe doesnโ€™t have a choice. Iโ€™ll never be with him, and neither will she,โ€ Ayla said, tears threatening to fall from her eyes.

I could feel the pain he felt. It was excruciating. I told him it would end if he just accepted, but he wouldnโ€™t give in. He was an Alpha. He was as strong as me. Iโ€™d never overpower him on this. Ayla must have sensed my stalemate. Or her wolf did and told her because she pulled herself from against the wall, standing up straight again.

โ€œI, Ayla Garner, cut my ties to Alpha Torinโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ There was desperation in my voice. She couldnโ€™t do this. I moved to stop her.

โ€œAnd the Greytooth Pack.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ I fell to a knee, feeling the invisible tether that united pack members with their Alpha splinter. Kieran was pounding against the barriers of my control, putting all his might into taking over the shift. I knew I was on the verge.

โ€œFrom this day forth, I am a rogue.โ€ She took an unsteady step toward me, silent tears rolling freely down her face. โ€œNow get out.โ€

She had used my fatherโ€™s name. Either of our names would have worked in the limbo state we were currently in. But she used my fatherโ€™s. There was nothing I could do to stop her. Nothing I could do to fight the separation. She knew exactly what she was doing.

If my wolf wouldnโ€™t sever the mate bond, she would remove herself from any control I had over her.

With one final, agonizing look, she walked away, disappearing upstairs.

I took in a ragged breath of air. Ayla now had until midnight to be out of our territory. If I caught her on our land after that, I would have to kill her. Mate bond or not. She was a rogue now. It was our laws.

Kieran had finally gone still in my mind.

โ€˜Mateโ€™s gone.โ€™

Did he mean Ayla or her wolf?

โ€˜Dasha. Mateโ€™s name is Dasha. Dashaโ€™s gone.โ€™

Realization hit me and panic set in. Her wolf was gone. The pain was too much. She had retreated deep into the recesses of Aylaโ€™s subconscious. Ayla wouldnโ€™t be able to call on her. She wouldnโ€™t be able to shift. She wouldnโ€™t be able to heal.

She was a rogue without a wolf. She couldnโ€™t protect herself.

I had to get as far away from her as possible.

I dragged myself back to my feet, forcing them to walk out the door. Just you and only you. I never want you to second guess yourself or your place in my life. Halloway doesnโ€™t matter to me like you do. Youโ€™re my number one priority, Mira. You are mine. All mine. Only mine. Donโ€™t you ever doubt that.โ€
โ€œI cannot spent forever with someone who doesnโ€™t love me. Mason.โ€
********
MIRA (PRESENT)
My heart thuds wantonly at the thought of seeing Mason again. In the space of one year and a few months, Mason Lachlan has completely taken over every facet of my life.
I am really beginning to think that New York Cityโ€™s most dangerous billionaire is obsessed with me, but I canโ€™t complain because I am just as obsessed with the hot hunk of a man.
He took my life by storm and now I cannot imagine living without him. I am that far gone.
We pass through the gleaming marble hallway and finally arrive at a door marked, CEO.
โ€œWait here, miss.โ€
I nod quietly while Darth knocks once and pulls the door open. Iโ€™m about to go through my documents for the umpteenth time when Darth reappears, his face set in hard lines.
โ€œI think we should go, miss. You can see the boss another time.โ€
Confused, I narrow my eyes at him.
โ€œWhat do you mean? Why?โ€
Darth grabs my arm, trying to steer me back into the elevator and my pulse thunders with anxiety. Somethingโ€™s wrong. Darth never touches me. Something just spooked him.
โ€œDarth, what is going on?โ€ I ask him, my voice slightly shaky.
He shakes his head quickly and my worry gradually morphs into annoyance.
โ€œWell, if youโ€™re not going to tell me, then Iโ€™ll just have to see for myself.โ€
I try to fee myself from his grip but he holds on tighter.
โ€œYou do not want to go in there, miss.โ€
I wrench my arm free with much difficulty and March into Masonโ€™s office with a thundering heartbeat. Before I even step in, the sounds that filter through the half open doorway has me freezing in my tracks.
I hear a muffled, girly giggle, then,
โ€œOh, Mason. Stop! You have to focus.โ€ The owner of that voice doesnโ€™t sound like she wants Mason to stop whatever heโ€™s doing to her nor focus.
A sharp pang slices through my heart as I listen harder. When I hear nothing for the next five seconds, I heave an angry breath and push the door open.
The sight that greets me has anger shooting through my bloodstream.
Standing beside Mason with her boobs nearly spilling out of the tight bodice of her top is none other than Halloway Stephens, my most dangerous rival and Masonโ€™s self acclaimed best friend.
Fuming, I take in her fingers on Masonโ€™s arm and the lazy smile on his face and little pinpricks of jealousy pierce my already heated skin.
โ€œWhat t is going on here?โ€
At the sound of my voice, Mason and Halloway come apart immediately. Upon seeing me, Hallowayโ€™s catty green eyes light like the cat that got the cream.
Masonโ€™s fiery gray gaze pins me in place by the door.
โ€œI asked a question.โ€ I insist as I grab the door to maintain my balance.
Hallowayโ€™s fingers find their way back to Masonโ€™s shoulders and she stares me down.
โ€œMason and I are working. Why donโ€™t you wait until you actually get invited in.โ€
I stare at her incredulously. The conniving bimbo.
โ€œIt didnโ€™t look like you were working when half your boobs were in his face.โ€
Halloway opens her mouth, no doubt to reply with an aggressive come back, but Masonโ€™s authoritative voice fills the room.
โ€œShut up, both of you.โ€
My body literally trembles with rage and jealousy, so I do the only logical thing that comes to mind.
I walk outโ€ฆor at least I try to. I donโ€™t even get to the door when Masonโ€™s voice stops me.
โ€œWhere do you think youโ€™re going, Mira?โ€
I whip my head in his direction, my eyes glinting.
โ€œIโ€™m giving you both some privacy so you can continue โ€˜working.โ€™โ€™ I retort sharply.
Just then, Darth walks in and Mason spears him with a harsh glare.
โ€œWhy did you let her in here without informing me first?โ€
โ€œWell, thank God he did!โ€ I screech.
I try to leave again but Mason thunders,
โ€œDonโ€™t let her past that door, Darth.โ€
โ€œYes, sir.โ€
To my horror, Darth moves to the officeโ€™s entrance and blocks it with his muscled body.
โ€œWhoโ€™s side are you on, Darth? Let me out right now.โ€
Darth shakes his head.
โ€œIโ€™m sorry, miss Fernandez. Bossโ€™ orders.โ€
โ€œWell, to inferno with your boss!โ€ .
A part of me is probably aware that Iโ€™m overreacting, but I couldnโ€™t care less at this point.
While Iโ€™m still trying to argue with Darth, I sense a dark presence behind me. Before I can put out any form of resistance, a strong hand whips out and grabs my arm in a manacled grip, slamming me against a hard brick wall of a chest.
A surprised shriek escapes me as Mason spins me in his arms, trapping me against him with his muscled arm bound around my waist. His beautiful grey eyes are dark and cold with annoyance, but they still manage to burn a fiery path straight to my soul.
โ€œHow many times have I told you never to walk out on me, princess. How many times?โ€ He asks, his voice a low growl.
It takes me a second to distract myself from the hot column of his throat to the reason for my anger.
โ€œLet go of me, Mason.โ€
โ€œThat will never happen. Deal with it.โ€
I huff then proceed to try and free myself from his grip. After three minutes of futile struggling, I give up.
To my absolute horror, Mason lowers his face against my neck, his hot breath against my skin playing havoc on my senses.
Focus on your anger, Mira! My subconscious screams.
โ€œAlways fighting.โ€ He whispers against me. โ€œMy little hellion.โ€
I shut my eyes against the influx of emotions that assail me, momentarily forgetting that there are people in the room until Hallowayโ€™s fake baby voice breaks through my daze.
โ€œMason, we need to wrap up the loose ends of this deal and send it out by today. Mira can wait until this is all over.โ€
Hallowayโ€™s voice is like a douse of cold water against my desire. I stiffen in Masonโ€™s arms and lean away from him.
โ€œYes, Mason. Please go back to work. Iโ€™m leaving.โ€
โ€œMiraโ€ฆโ€ he warns, his voice dark.
โ€œDonโ€™t Mira me!โ€ I snap. โ€œYouโ€™re always the one talking about exclusivity but your so-called best friend has your attention half of the time. Iโ€™m done, Mason.โ€
Masonโ€™s expression becomes cold, telling me without words that I am taking this too far. I couldnโ€™t care less.
He lets go of me and steps back, his intense gaze stripping me raw.
โ€œYou think I and Hallowayโ€ฆ?โ€
I fold my arms and look away.
โ€œIt looks like it.โ€
For a moment, he says nothing. Then his icy voice fills the room.
โ€œEverybody out. Now.โ€
โ€œGladly.โ€ I huff, about to leave.
โ€œIf you take one more step towards that door, I will hump you right here, right now so you can remember who you belong to.โ€
I freeze, my cheeks reddening in embarrassment when I see the slight smile on Darthโ€™s face before he vacates the room.
Halloway walks to Mason in her obscenely tall heels and too short formal skirt and lays a hand on his shoulder. I feel my insides boil. I will break off those hands soon. Scoutโ€™s honour.
โ€œBut, Mase,โ€ she purrs. โ€œWhat about the deal?โ€
โ€œWork will come later.โ€ Mason says curtly. โ€œI have more important matters to deal with.โ€
Yes, bimbo.
โ€œMason, you donโ€™t have toโ€ฆโ€
โ€œLeave, Halloway!โ€ Mason thunders.
She steps back at his harsh tone, surprise etched on her features. Then she lifts her head, spears me with her signature Queen B icy glare and sails out of the room, almost slamming into my shoulders in the process.
When weโ€™re alone in the room once more, Masonโ€™s hot gaze roves over me. He settles on the edge of his glass desk, stretching his long legs out before him.
God, heโ€™s hot as sin. Perfectly chiselled jaw; the most beautifully intense grey eyes; wide, muscled chest and hair thatโ€™s great for grabbing during an climaxโ€ฆthe man should be illegal.
He should come with a warning label. Period.
โ€œDrama queen.โ€ He mutters.
I roll my eyes.
โ€œI was not the one with my best friendโ€™s boobs almost in my mouth just now.โ€
His eyes morph into a smoky gray mask and my pulse flutters in my throat.
โ€œCome here, baby girl.โ€ He growls.
My heart sings at the nickname but I stand my ground.
โ€œIโ€™m late for my interview, Mason.โ€
---
Then I lift my chin and vacate the room before I burst into tears.
Darth shows me to the interviewerโ€™s office. The brass name plate on the wall reads, โ€œManager.โ€
My anxiety returns and I begin to sweat. I really need this job and I want to get it without Masonโ€™s help.
โ€œYouโ€™ll do fine, miss.โ€
I smile at Darth, grateful for his words of encouragement, then I push open the door and walk into the luxuriously furnished office.
I take two steps and freezeโ€ฆbecause seated behind the Managerโ€™s table is non other than Halloway Stephens.
LILY
โ€œYouโ€™re late.โ€ She sneers.
I look around the room, hoping fo find something that assures me that this office does not belong to her, but the high class blue curtains, luxurious paintings on the walls and even the Diamond studded mahogany desk all scream Halloway.
I have no doubt that those are real diamonds and only a bimbo like Halloway Stephens would have real diamonds drilled into her office desk.
โ€œSorry.โ€ I say with a saccharine sweet tone. โ€œI was caught up with important things.โ€
She rocks on her swivel chair, her eyes almost burning a hole into my forehead.
โ€œIn this company, we do not tolerate insubordination of any kind. Coming for your first interview almost an hour late automatically reduces your qualifications. We do not hire incompetent people.โ€ She says with contempt.
I begin to feel a stirring of annoyance but I tamp it down. Instead, I walk towards her and take the empty visitorโ€™s seat.
โ€œPlease accept my sincere apologies.โ€ My voice lowers with โ€œsincereโ€ mockery.
Halloway looks from the seat to me.
โ€œI do not remember asking you to seat. This is my office. I dictate the pace here.โ€
I shake my head.
โ€œHonestly, Halloway, I wanted this interview to be conducted in a civilized manner but since youโ€™re so intent on bringing out my Italian temper, Iโ€™ll ask you a question.โ€
She merely raises a sassy brow at me.
โ€œDo you wannna know why I was late?โ€
She rolls her eyes,
โ€œSave your useless storiesโ€ฆโ€
โ€œNo, no. I promise you itโ€™s good.โ€ I cut in. โ€œSomeone gave me a very pleasant climax this morning. Kept me in bed for hours.โ€ Iโ€™m pretty sure my eyes are twinkling right now.
Hallowayโ€™s shakes her head, disgust evident in her gaze.
โ€œIโ€™ve always known you were a bimbo. I have no idea what Mason sees in you. Youโ€™re just a two dimmed bimbo.โ€
Oh. Am I? I smile once more.
โ€œBut you havenโ€™t even asked me who my man is.โ€ I inquire, trying as much as possible to look innocent.
Halloway waves her hand in a dismissive gesture.
โ€œProbably some hog you met on the street and followed home. I wouldnโ€™t put that past you.โ€
Oh, this will be good. I let out a mock gasp.
โ€œWhy do you think so low of me? I didnโ€™t actually meet him on the street. I met him at a club and he requestedโ€ฆno he demanded that I follow him homeโ€ฆโ€
โ€œSame thing. That is all bimbos like you are capable of doing.โ€
I make a show of picking at my nails.
โ€œOh. I didnโ€™t know your best friend slept with bimbos.โ€
In front of me, Halloway has gone completely still.
โ€œWh-what did you say?โ€
I face her squarely, dropping every bit of pretense and spearing her with a cold gaze.
โ€œExactly what you heard. Hayley.โ€ I mock. โ€œMason and I have been living togetherโ€ฆand sleeping together for a long, long time. In fact, he wants us to be together for an indefinite period of time, and boy can he hump. I almost didnโ€™t survive last nightโ€™s round of pleasure.โ€
Hallowayโ€™s face slowly morphs from shock to anger. Her eyes narrow and she visibly begins to tremble.
โ€œYouโ€™re lying! Itโ€™s not true.โ€
I lift my chin.
โ€œYou can ask him about it. Our relationship is not hush hush or anything.โ€
I have no idea how it happens. One minute Halloway is seated before me and the next, she leaps across the large table and grabs my neck in a chokehold.
I flail wildly, desperately trying to dislodge her hands around my throat but she just squeezes harder.
โ€œMason is mine, you bimbo!โ€ She snarls. โ€œYou cannot just waltz in and take everything Iโ€™ve worked for. Heโ€™s mine! Mine!โ€
I can barely breathe. The maniacal gleam in her eyes looks so awfully familiar. Iโ€™ve seen those eyes somewhere before but right now, my impending death makes it difficult to think clearly.
โ€œDie, bimbo! Just die!โ€
A sound comes from down the hallway and within seconds, Halloway flies back across the table and settles in her seat.
I fall against my chair, wheezing as I struggle to breathe in gulps of much needed air.
She tried to kill me. The bimbo tried to kill me.
โ€œAre you guys done here?โ€
I look up sharply. When my eyes meet Masonโ€™s, I run across the room and into his already open arms. His eyes widen in alarm.
โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong baby girl? What happened?โ€
I claw desperately at my throat as I struggle to get the words out.
โ€œSheโ€ฆshe..โ€
Mason follows the direction of my outstreched hand then looks back at me with confusion.
โ€œWhat are you trying to tell me, Mira?โ€
โ€œShe tried to kill me!โ€ I finally cough out. โ€œHalloway tried to kill me.โ€
Mason goes completely still against me.
โ€œOh, Mason. Is she okay?โ€ Hallowayโ€™s fake baby voice filters through my panicked fog.
I turn around and sure though, the bimbo is seated comfortably in her chair, looking every inch the flawless divaโ€ฆnot a hair out of place.
โ€œThe interview was going on smoothly until she fell into some kind of panic attack and starting coughing. I had no idea what to do.โ€
I would give anything to slap that fake concern off her face.
โ€œMira, when did your panic attacks return?โ€ Mason asks seriously.
I give him an incredulous stare.
โ€œAre you honestly believing this bimbo over me? She tried to kill me. She tried to choke meโ€ฆโ€
Mason wraps his hands around me.
โ€œCalm down, baby girl. Calm down.โ€
โ€œNo! If you did not come I would have been dead! She tried to kill me.โ€
Halloway rises to her feet.
โ€œWhat is she talking about?โ€ Her voice is shaky, almost as if sheโ€™s on the verge of tears.
โ€œMason, how can she say that about me? Iโ€™ve never killed anyone before. Why would she accuse me of such a thing?โ€
Her tears begin to fall and she wipes it off, perfecting her wrongfully accused victim role like a pro.
I can only stare in horror.
Masonโ€™s arms tighten around me protectively, but he doesnโ€™t look like he believes me one bit.
โ€œMason, you have to believe me. This womanโ€ฆโ€
โ€œYou can check the CCTV cameras if you donโ€™t believe me.โ€
I freeze.
I turn to find Hallowayโ€™s eyes still shimmering with fake tearsโ€ฆand solid confidence.
What is she doing?
โ€œYes. Yes, Mason. I swear, Iโ€™m not lying. You can check the cameras.โ€
Masonโ€™s gaze remains shuttered as he looks down at me.
โ€œYou do realize that if the CCTV footage reveals nothing, you may have just accused Hayley wrongly of attempted murder.โ€
โ€œI donโ€™t care!โ€ I screech. โ€œIโ€™m not lying.โ€
I try to move away from him but he tightens his arms around me, keeping me firmly against him.
โ€œYouโ€™re not going anywhere.โ€ He growls.
Then to Darth, he says,
โ€œBring in the CCTV footage. Letโ€™s settle this once and for all.โ€
MIRA
I watch with a rapidly beating heart as Darth produces the CCTV footage and a computer. Meanwhile, crocodile tears are still crawling down Hallowayโ€™s cheeks.
I do not miss the evil looks she sends my way when Mason is not looking, of course. The bimbo is suffering from some kind of mental psychopathy issues. I can swear it.
The tension in the room is nerve wracking as the footage begins to play out on the screen. When it gets to the point where I begin speaking, I lean in closer.
โ€œGo slower right here.โ€ I tell Mason and he sets the video to play in slow motion.
I can already see Halloway sweating in her designer outfit as the video gets closer and closer to the point where she nearly choked me to death.
โ€œMason, I honestly donโ€™t see the p-point of this. I didnโ€™t do anything.โ€ She stutters nervously.
Mason glances at her.
โ€œMira insists you did. I want to give her the benefit of doubt.โ€
The video finally pinpoints on the scene where Halloway began to look upset. My fingers on the table tighten as we finally approach the highlight.
It all happens in a blur.
One second, I am watching the unravelling footage expectantly, and the next, Iโ€™m completely frozen and staring at the screen in horror, unable to believe my eyes.
โ€œNo. Rewind the footage. Rewind the footage, Mason! It canโ€™t be.โ€
Mason turns to me, his eyes dark with disappointment. I push him away and hastily click the buttons that rewind the video, but the same scenes still play out.
It appears that the scene where Halloway leaped across the table and almost killed me has been completely erased. The footage just skips to the point where she lets go of my throat and Mason comes into the office .
I sink into the nearest available chair, utterly dumbfounded.
โ€œI swear she tried to choke me. The footage has been sabotaged.โ€ I whisper, still trying to wrap my head around what I just watched.
Halloway jumps to her feet and slams her hands on the table, startling out of me.
โ€œEnough of this nonsense! Iโ€™m sorry, Mason, I can tolerate all of Miraโ€™s unwarranted past insults, but I will never tolerate wrong accusations. You and I both know that I would never hurt anyone, but you still went ahead to shame my reputation by requesting for the footage. Now that my innocence has been proven, I will not sit back and watch Mira continue to insult me.โ€
โ€œIโ€™m sorry about all of this, Hayleyโ€ฆโ€ Mason begins.
I stare at him incredulously.
โ€œYouโ€™re sorry?! Youโ€™re sorry? This bimbo nearly killed me. She sabotaged the footageโ€ฆโ€
โ€œEnough of this nonsense, Mira!โ€ Mason thunders, stunning me to silence. โ€œI allowed that video to be brought in because you looked really upset, but I will no longer stand for this drama. Enough!โ€
Halloway gives me a mocking glare over Masonโ€™s shoulder.
Right now, I want to hurt her so much, the feeling is like a dangerous itch beneath my skin.
โ€œYou should be grateful that youโ€™re Masonโ€™s woman, otherwise I would press charges against you for harassment andโ€ฆโ€
I do not wait for her to finish. Suddenly, I see red. My desire to claw the bimboโ€™s eyes out tears at me and I make a mad dash for her.
Iโ€™m still struggling when a hand wraps around my throat once again, shutting off my air flow and stunning me to silence. My red haze clears long enough and I take in the furious grey eyes before me with hurt surprise.
I claw at his hands, indicating that I cannot breathe;
โ€œMasonโ€ฆโ€ I whisper.
Instead of letting go, his hands tighten around my throat and dizziness begins to set it in. But that isnโ€™t what really hurts me.
What hurts me is seeing that the disappointment and anger in Masonโ€™s eyes are channelled at me. What really hurts is the fact that he vowed to protect me, but here he is supporting the one woman who almost killed me.
โ€œSir, youโ€™re hurting her. I would advise you to let her go to prevent any further damage.โ€ Darthโ€™s voice breaks through my fog.
Mason lets go of me immediately, pushing me against Darth as if the mere thought of touching me is repulsive
โ€œDarth?โ€ He growls, his eyes still pinning me in place.
โ€œYes, sir.โ€
โ€œTake her to my office and keep her there until I return.โ€
His icy stare chills me straight to my bones.
I let go of my sore throat and spear him with an angry glare, tears stinging my eyes.
โ€œNo, Darth. I do not want to be in the same building with people who tried to kill me. Take me home.โ€
Masonโ€™s eyes flash with a dark expression.
โ€œDo not disobey my orders, Darth. Do as I say.โ€
โ€œCome on, miss. Letโ€™s go.โ€
Darth grabs my arm gently and I watch with mounting hatred as Mason goes to Halloway, checking her body for injuries while Iโ€™m over here, hurting from the emotional and physical injuries heโ€™s just caused me.
Just as Darth is about to pull me out of the room, I cannot help but let him feel even a quarter of the hate burning in my heart.
โ€œYou were supposed to protect me.โ€ I say through my tears. Mason remains frozen to the spot at the sound of voice. โ€œYou promised to keep the enemies away, but there you are breaking all of your promises yet again.โ€
Mason turns to me, his eyes as cold as ice, but Iโ€™m not done yet.
โ€œI hope you enjoy the enemy camp because I will prove that Halloway did try to strangle me in this office today if it is the last thing I do, and you will be sorry that you laid your hands on me because of her.โ€
Then I push Darth out of the way and make for the elevators.
When Mason comes searching for me in his office later on, he will not find me. He wonโ€™t even find me at his home.
I am done being his submissive little lamb. Why can't I smell you?" Alpha Matthew Stone grabbed Sam's arm and felt bursts of electrical current to every cell and nerve ending in his body.
********
Samโ€™s POV
She couldn't help but wonder how far she had come and how much farther she had to go. She remembered her mother had told her that the White Feather pack was located near something with the word Lake in it but wasn't sure of the full name or of how much farther she had to go.
She lost track of how many days she had been running and it didn't really matter because she was free! The only thing was, she didn't feel safe and it was so hard to find something to eat. She was so hungry and tired. She hadn't been able to fall into a deep sleep in she couldn't even remember how long, because she was constantly afraid. She was afraid of someone catching her or attacking her.
She had no idea what day it was or how long she had been on the run when she came up on another stretch of highway. After looking both ways and only seeing black top pavement and more trees, she decided to follow it to see if she could find a sign that would tell her something. She stuck as close as possible to the trees but kept getting a feeling that someone was watching her. She couldn't tell what it was that had her on edge but something was making the hair on the back of her neck stand up, like it was telling her to be on alert.
Since she had shifted back to her human form while she was near the road and she had been walking and jogging in her human form๏ผŒbut felt maybe it was time to get back in her wolf form. She could run faster as a wolf than she could as a human.
She slipped back into the woods and stripped, tied her clothes around her leg then shifted and smelled water. She followed her nose, weaving her way through the trees until she found the source. There was a small stream running just inside the tree line and she was thirsty. She carefully watched the area around her, her ears standing straight up and twitching back and forth, listening to every sound in the woods as she drank.
Suddenly her heart beat jumped to almost double speed when she heard a twig snap to her right. She whipped her head around and saw a pair of red eyes staring straight at her. Rogue!
At the same time, she heard a low growl slightly behind her and then a flash of black fur leaped over her head and raced towards the rogue. Sam was stunned as she watched the huge black wolf attack the rogue. The rogue was almost as tall but was half the size in body weight and it was basically no contest. The two wolves tangled for a few seconds and then the black wolf snapped the rogue's neck and threw him to the side.
Sam felt frozen in place as the large black wolf turned to her and she saw his eyes. They were golden and almost shining as he looked over at her. He slowly turned and stepped behind a tree and shifted. He untied the pants that had been tied around his ankle and pulled them on before stepping out to confront her.
He was as big in his human form as he had been in his wolf form except you could now see each muscle clearly defined and he bulged with them everywhere! She couldn't look him in the face but her eyes wandered over really wide shoulders, massive long arms led down to some of the biggest hands she had ever seen. His hairless chest was impressive as were the ridges of muscles that lined his torso down in a tantalizing V that disappeared in the band of his low riding shorts.
She forced her eyes down to huge muscular thighs and calves. The only part hidden from her view was the area his low riding shorts covered, but the tight material did nothing to hide a large bulge in the front that hung slightly down on to his thigh. She was afraid to look at his face. She had learned the hard way that looking a person of authority in the eye was disrespectful and painful.
He was amazed that she had not moved and seemed to be frozen in place as she inspected him.
"Shift!" He commanded.
Her eyes got wide and she shook her head. "I said Shift!" He commanded again.
She shook her head and then turned in a circle. He understood that she wanted him to turn around first. He smiled and chuckled but did as she requested. He turned his back on her and heard some material rustling and then she whispered "Ok, you can turn around now."
His eyes widened when he saw the tiny little woman with hair like milk chocolate and skin the color of pale caramel standing before him with her head slightly bent as if she was afraid to look him in the face.
"Thank you for saving me." Sam whispered as she watched him through her lashes. She took a step back when he took a step forward but he stopped right away.
"You're welcome. Who are you? What are you doing on our land?" He asked.
"My name is Sam Madison. I'm looking for the White Feather pack. Can you tell me if I'm close or not?" Sam replied, still not looking directly at him.
"Another mile or so and you would be at the pack house if you took the right fork in the road up here about a hundred yards around the next bend. Why are you looking for the White Feather pack?"
"My mother was originally from the White Feather pack. My parents are dead and I ran away from my old pack because they are cruel and abusive. I overheard the pack's Alpha's son when he said he wanted to make me a breeder. I was terrified the Alpha was going to allow it so I ran. I've been running for I'm not even sure how.
"Now." She said softly. "Can I talk to your Alpha please?" "You already are." He said. "I'm Alpha Matthew Stone."
With that, Sam's head snapped up and her eyes got wide as she stared at him for a moment before she dropped to her knees and bent her neck, showing submission to him. Her head swam at the quick movements and then everything went black.

Matthew's POV
Matthew had spotted her about a mile down the road, weaving her way through the trees, staying close to the road as if she didn't want to lose sight of it. He was deeper in the trees and the attraction he felt was undeniable but confusing. He had followed her as he wondered who she was? What was this beautiful golden caramel wolf doing on White Feather Pack land? Why had he not smelled her and why couldn't he now? She had only the scent of a wild flower that he couldn't identify right off the bat.
She was obviously not a rogue but he had not received any messages about a neighboring pack asking for permission for a member of their pack to cross his territory. She almost looked lost. He knew she was going to be reaching the entrance road to his property soon so he jogged slightly faster, wanting to get ahead of her so that he could meet her at the entrance but kept a close eye on her.
He had received a report earlier of a rogue in the area and wanted to be sure that no harm came to her before she reached her destination. He hadn't been able to catch her scent yet, like she had hidden it, which made him more curious about her.
Suddenly he smelled something else. He stopped in his tracks and looked around. He saw the female wolf stop at the small stream that ran along the edge of the tree line to take a drink. She was obviously on alert because her ears kept twitching. He saw her lift her head and then freeze. Her eyes were wide and were the most beautiful blue he had ever seen. He heard the twig snap and he snapped his head around. The rogue! He was less than fifty yards from her and crouched as if he was going to attack. Matt was about a hundred yards away from him but he used his Alpha speed to quickly close the distance.
Matt ran towards them, coming up behind her, he jumped over her head and charged the rogue. The rogue was seriously malnourished and no contest for him. Within less than a minute, he snapped the rogue's neck and tossed him to the side. Then he turned towards the golden wolf and realized if they were going to be able to talk, they needed to shift first. He stepped behind a large tree and quickly untied the shorts he had tied around his calf and pulled them on.
He stepped out from behind the tree and took several steps towards her. She seemed to be frozen in place and hadn't moved a muscle.
"Shift!" He commanded.
Her eyes got wide and she shook her head.
"I said Shift!" He commanded again, pushing a bit of his Alpha power forward .
She shook her head again and then turned in a circle.
She was rather busty but otherwise really skinny, like she hadn't been eating well for a long while. She wasn't what he would call boney and her small, slender frame suggested well defined muscles, but she definitely needed to put on some weight.
I overheard the pack's Beta's son when he said he wanted to make me a breeder. I was terrified the Alpha was going to allow it so I ran. I've been running for I'm not even sure how long now." She said softly. "Can I talk to your Alpha please?"
"You already are." He said. "I'm Alpha Matthew Stone."
With that, Sam's head snapped up and her eyes got wide as she stared at him for a moment before she dropped to her knees and bent her neck, showing submission to him. Her blue eyes in her wolf form had been beautiful but the deep gray blue of her large human eyes were amazing. He had never seen eyes like hers. They seemed to look right through him.
Suddenly she fell to the side and lay still. He rushed to her side and grabbed her arm. It was like he had grabbed hold of a live wire as the shock ran up his arm, straight into his chest and he jerked his hand back.
"Is she my mate? Why can't I smell her?" He slowly reached out and pushed her hair back out of her face and she looked pale. He ignored the electrical shocks that ran up his arms as he scooped her up holding her tightly to his chest, he ignored the warm electric shocks that ran through him and ran to the pack clinic as fast as he could go. He covered the almost two mile stretch through the trees and across the yard in under two minutes.
He kicked the clinic doors open and yelled "Doctor Andy! I need you now!" He pushed his Alpha voice out.
Nurse Abby and Doctor Andy came racing down the hall and were amazed to see their Alpha in nothing but shorts, carrying what looked like a child in his big powerful arms with a look of total fear on his face.
"Follow me. What happened? Who is she?" Dr. Andy asked, as he led the Alpha into an exam room. "Lay her down here."
"I think she's my mate and I don't know what happened. We were in the forest just talking and suddenly she just passed out." Matt said in bewilderment.
"Well, go outside and let me check her over. I'll be out in a few minutes to talk to you." Dr. Andy said, giving the large Alpha a stern look.
Matt didn't want to leave her but knew he needed to give the doctor room to work. He reluctantly left the exam room and paced back and forth while he waited. What was taking so long? He wondered after the first 15 minutes, that felt like it had been hours. Finally Dr. Andy stepped outside and he looked concerned.
"What? What's wrong with her?" Matt demanded.
"Sit down, Alpha. And remember, no one here did this to her." Dr. Andy said and wished his parents or Beta were here.
Matt's heart rate jumped into overdrive. Was he going to lose his mate right after meeting her?
"Is she going to be OK? Who did what to her?" Matt asked, his voice shook slightly.
"Well, she's still unconscious so I can't question her and her first and most urgent problem is that she is seriously malnourished. Looks like she hasn't been eating well for a long time. We've got her on an IV but what she's going to need is food, especially meat and green vegetables. Her iron counts are very low." Dr. Andy told him but Matt could tell from the sorrowful look on his face that her being hungry was not the whole story.
"What else doc? I can tell there's something else." Matt said, almost afraid to hear what he had to say.
"She's been beaten, Matt, repeatedly over a long period of time. Her back is covered in scars, so whatever they were hitting her with must have been soaked in wolfsbane or silver otherwise the scars wouldn't be as bad as they are. It must have taken a long time for them to heal. I'd like to take some x-rays to be sure but I suspect that she's had some broken bones in the past." Dr. Andy said quietly and got the reaction he had suspected he was going to get when Alpha Matt stood up and punched a hole in the wall.
"Breaking your hands and destroying my clinic is not going to help her, Matt. Nurse Abby is going to stay with her until she wakes up but right now, what she needs is rest and then food. Be gentle with her Matt. I've got a feeling she's been through a lot of misery. What's her name?"
"Sam Madison. She said her mother was originally from our pack." Matt replied, as he sat back down. His legs suddenly didn't feel strong enough to hold him up anymore.
"Rafe and Angie Madison's daughter?" Dr. Andy's eyebrows went clear up to his hairline.
"You knew her parents?" Matt asked in amazement.
"Yes! Her mother was your mother's best friend. They had been almost inseparable growing up until Angie met Rafe when he came
to visit your grandfather with his father. He took one look at her and said Mate! She left with him and we never saw her again."
Just then Nurse Abby stepped out of the exam room and said "She's waking up, Doctor."
"Let me get the x-rays, Matt and then you can see her. OK?" Dr. Andy said as he turned to go back in the room. He instructed Nurse Abby to bring in the portable x-ray machine and then stepped back in the room.
Matt sat down and dropped his head into his hands. He needed to let his mom know about this. He mind linked her to come to the clinic and then waited for her to arrive.
Nurse Abby pushed the x-ray machine into the room just a minute before Natalie arrived. Her heart no longer pounded when she saw him.
Ronald bent down to get closer to her face. "Do you really want a divorce?"
Kate wanted to step back. As he drew closer, she did not feel any warmth from his tone.
"I had asked Sam to hand you the divorce papers. All you have to do is sign the papers." Kate forced herself to look into his eyes. Ronald squinted judgmentally.
"You're acting fine, as though this is nothing for you." Ronald straightened himself. Kate opened her mouth to say something, but before she could say anything, Ronald swiftly took her in his arms and into the mansion.
He went upstairs, kicked the door of the master bedroom open, and tossed Kate onto the bed.
"Hey!!" Kate shouted, to no avail. Ronald leaned over and held her hands above her head. Kate's summer attire was so thin that she could feel his body strongly pressed against hers. Kate pursed her lips and looked at Ronald, alarmed.
Ronald glanced through the room and then looked at her defensive face, leaned toward her lips and said "you make it look like you are determined to divorce."
Ronald lips brushed against Kate as she struggled. Ronald felt the softness of her lips and wanted more, and he asked for more.
"No, let go of me. This is not right."
With the impending divorce on her mind, she continued to struggle and clenched her teeth. Ronald groaned and stopped pursuing Kate.
"You are still Mrs Scott, my wife."
His hands still gripped hers. "I have my right to say no," replied Kate stubbornly.
"No," Ronald repeated what she said as if it were a joke.
He moved his hands to her chin. "More reverse psychology" asked Ronald when he suddenly pressed his lips against her, as if doing so would make Kate tell the truth, Kate pulled her mouth away.
"To with you and your reverse psychology. Let go of me." She tried her best to push him off of her, but he wasn't budging.
A slap echoed in the room and Kate froze as Ronald's face started to swell.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
What's happening next? You will be doing everyone a favor if you die. You are a waste of space." He finished.
As he spoke, I could feel my wolf starting to hyperventilate. I locked eyes with him and ask the one question that's been bothering me for such a long time.
"What is it about me you can't help but hate?" He looked taken back for a second and then smirked.
"It's because you exist!" He answered me.
โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”
I was trembling and my teeth were chattering. At the rate my heart was going, I would probably die from heart attack. My wolf was not calming me down which was very strange. She had stopped pacing now; she was really relaxed like she knew what was coming and she was ready for it.
The two girls opened the door to the ballroom and Krista threw me inside. I stumbled to my knees.
The music stopped and I knew when I look up everyone would be staring at me. My wolf seemed excited. She was jittering like she ate lots and lots of sugar. I risked a chance and looked up. The huge ballroom was filled with people from our pack and members from outside packs.
The men were dressed in black suit with tie and their hair slick back while the women wore long ball gowns. Their hair and makeup was done to perfection. While they looked beautiful, the look on their faces said differently. They all curled their noses and lips into snarls as they glared at me.
Every single person in the room, with the exception of a guy who seemed to be staring out the window completely uninterested in what was going on,was glaring at me with hatred.
I looked around and my gaze fell on 'The Father.
The look he gave me promised my death if I ever survive this. I pray I didn't. I looked at familiar faces of my pack members and they were all glaring at me with hatred and embarrassment.
Unfamiliar faces were staring at me with disgust.
Did I really look that terrible? I was wearing my raggedy long black dress; I knew my hair was in tangles because I didn't own a brush or comb. I took a shower but the bruises covering my face and the rest of my body must have made me look like a zombie.
I looked to my right to see the alpha and his wife holding somebody. The guy they were holding was the only on wearing white suit. His back was turn and Dean was standing in front of him rubbing his shoulders. The alpha sent me a menacing glare while his wife jaw dropped to the floor as her eyes popped out of its socket.
Dean looked over the shoulder of the person he was comforting when he noticed the noise stopped and saw me. He glared at me with malice. So far the only people who were not staring at me were the strange guy at the window and whoever was in front of Dean. I looked around again and recoiled. The shadows were everywhere. They blackened the entire ball room making it hard for me to see people's faces. I felt like I was suffocating. My eyes burned with unshed tears while I put my hands up to shield my face from the thick darkness.
My wolf was pushing at the surface now. She was really excited. I couldn't understand her excitement until air blew from the open windows and the most delicious scent came from the direction where the alpha was standing. The scent smelt like pine, something sweet and the forest when it rain; although I have never seen the forest, I just knew. I liked it.
Thunder and lightning struck outside as strong wind blew through the window. The person Dean was comforting stiffen and looked up. He slowly turned around and looked my way. It was Jebidiah.
He locked eyes with me and started to slowly walk towards me like he was in a trance. I was nervous at first but the feeling was replaced with insurmountable happiness from my wolf. I realized that this was the moment she and I had been waiting for. The pack will finally accept us as one of them and forgive us. We did it, we finally found happiness.
I felt hot tears of joy rolled down my cheek. Tears finally fell from my eyes after years of it not coming. Nobody could describe the amount of happiness I was feeling at this moment. I felt free like I could fly; my soul was lifted and noting could bring me down. Looking into Jebidiah's eyes, I saw the stars, the ocean, life, light and a promise of peace, security and joy.
He stopped in front of me and knelt down, still in a trance. He reached out his hand to touch my face.
I was too eager to feel his touch and the delicious sparks that would travel along my body. I felt like nothing could distract me from his strange pools of blue and green eyes just like the Alpha's. Not even the gasped and outrage coming from the people surrounding us. While their gasped did not distract me, it had the opposite effect on him.
Jebidiah hand stopped midway from touching my cheek and the spell was broken. He shook his head as if to clear out of the trance and looked at me. He gazed at me in confusion at first and then in recognition. His lips curled in disgust and he glared at me with pure hatred.
Oh God that looked! When I looked into his eyes all I saw was hate. How was that possible? The look he gave me made me want to reach inside myself and pull out everything. My guts and all the disgust he saw. The stars and promises of happiness I saw were completely gone. I became trapped inside his hate and I saw it. The shadow I always saw in my dreams, the malice that promised to rid the world of Supernaturals first was there. I didn't understand what was going on anymore. My wolf was shaking inside me now but I wasn't. I was still looking at Jebidiah.
He stood up and looked around. He then looked back at me and looked around again. His gazed finally rested on me and he began to open his mouth. I could see the shadow smiling in his eyes.
It was waiting for whatever he was about to do.
Right then, I knew, whatever he did or say would decide if that Thing escaped or not. I felt like I had to stop him. My wolf stopped shaking and pushed to the surface agreeing with me. For the first time, she and I spoke together, in sync.
"Please don't," we beg him. He seemed startled at first but then smirk cockily. He knew I knew what was coming. How can I not; he has told me countless times that I would be rejected. And he was about to do just that. But I had to try. He was our only chance of survival. He also might be the only chance of saving the supernatural community and the rest of the world. It all depends on if he rejected us. I reached out to grab his hands but he pulled away causing me to fall on my hands. Tears were running down my cheeks as I pleaded with him.
"Please don't Jebidiah. You don't know what you are doing," I cried like I never cried before. My wolf and I was pleading with him. She was pleading to his wolf while I was begging the human hoping they would have a heart and stop what they were about to do. If his wolf does not agree with it,Jebidiah could not reject us.
"Oh, I know exactly what I'm about to do," he snare at me. I could see the malice in his eyes while he smirked. How could he hate me like this? I'm his mate for crying out loud!
"You will kill us all if you do this," I told him.
"No just you," he hissed at me. Applause and approval came from the people around the room.
He turned around waving and smiling. I looked around the room to see everyone smiling; from the alpha, his wife, Krista, Dean, 'The Father' and the pack members. Did they not understand what was going on? How can they egg him on like that?
The people from the outside pack were smiling, but a few were not. Some of the Alphas had confusion on their faces but they were not stopping what was coming.
I looked to the window at the strange guy, he was watching now. Power was radiating off of him which means he was an Alpha. His eyes locked with mine for a split second and he frown; he looked to be deep in thought. I broke the stare and looked back at Jebidiah. He put his right hand over his heart and raised his left hand. My wolf and I tried one more time.
"Please Jebidiah. I will do anything, just don't do this," I cried. The pack members were snickering at my misery. I could feel the shadow growing more sinister but for some reason it had no affect on me. Jebidiah ignored my plea and did what he always promised me.
"I Jebidiah Leonardis Ragnarok reject..." he frowned probably because he didn't know what to call me. Too bad that won't help my case. He continued anyway.
"Reject this worthless, disgusting, ugly, wicked, nasty, weak, pathetic, bony bimbo as my mate. I don't want such a thing to even be associated with me,my family and my pack.
I froze. I couldn't feel anything. I was numb. Taste, touch, smell, feeling, all those senses left me. I had no idea what condition I was in.
I stare at the smoke around Jebidiah, feeling nothing; the smoke grew larger and thicker. The thing I saw in his eyes was being release. With all her strength, my wolf forced herself to the surface taking over my body which she had no difficulty doing because I felt like I was not in my body anymore. In a strong voice that caused everyone in the room to gasp she said.
"You just doom all of you!" then all broke loose.
The smoky shadow around the pack members and Jebidiah grew and started to cause the chandelier to shatter. Lights began to flicker on and off and the windows were yanked from their hinges as strong wind blew in the ball room. The shadows were passing around people causing them to trip and fall while some were lifted of their feet to dangle in the air. Darkness covered the room as werewolves' screams fill the room. Some were screaming for their love ones while others were asking what was happening.
Jebidiah was kneeling on the ground beside me to escape the shadow but I was not paying attention to him. I was watching the chaos unfolding before me. Alphas were screaming at people not to panic while the shadows enjoyed the damage they were causing. I knew they were not strong yet because although they could touch the pack members, it was only temporary. The people that were dangling in the air only lasted for a few seconds before they fell back down.
No shadow came to where I was sitting on the floor. I could care less if they did. I was watching pandemonium unfold right before my eyes. I slowly looked around to see Krista being choked by a shadow. She would swat it off but it came back. 'The Father' was also doing the same thing but because he was the beta he seemed to be faring better than his daughter.
Dean and the alpha were pulling down the alpha female who seemed to be dangling in the air. After a few seconds, she fell on both of them. The other alphas were pulling their mates and others down as well. I looked to the window and saw the strange guy lying flat on his stomach as he watched me. His eyes never left me. Our eyes met; he was still staring at me with his brow furrow in confusion. I lost interest in our little stare down and look to the side.
The main shadow, the malice in my dream that I saw in Jebidiah's eyes was standing there with a crazy and psychotic smile on his face. I don't even think that could be considered a smile. He seemed more solid than the others. He was just a thick smoke with a creepy and wicked and probably everlasting grin on his face. His eyes were burning fire as he stared at me. His expression did not change. I could say he seemed creepier and his grin was wider but I didn't think it was possible. I stare at him uncaringly. I don't think anything could make me feel.
At the Connor of my eyes I saw the strange window guy looking between me and the malice. I knew he couldn't see it but he knew I was seeing something. His brows deepen more with confusion. My gaze swept the room again. I could feel my wolf shaking uncontrollable inside of me but I couldn't find the strength to talk to her. I was probably shaking but I could not feel anything. AllI could do was watch what was happening.
Although I knew this was just the beginning of what these shadows will be capable of, I couldn't care less. I felt absolutely nothing. I was only awaiting death. I could finally die. Not the way I wanted which was by being swallowed by the ocean but I would gladly take the card that was dealt me. I resigned; I won't fight anymore. If my existence was so troublesome, it was time I was no more. As if she knew what I was thinking, my wolf gathered herself and pushed to the surface.
And with a voice so strong that it surpassed that of an Alpha she screamed through my voice:
"STOP!" the shadows stopped.
Actually everyone in the room stopped. They all fell to their knees including the alphas. Everything stopped even the weather outside. Everyone was staring at me with their mouth opened. I looked towards the strange guy and he seemed calm as he look at me while deep in thought. His eyes were calculating like he was putting some puzzle pieces together. Not caring what puzzle he was solving, I look down at Jebidiah who was staring at me with his jaw hanging open. His eyes were wide as they stare at me with strange emotion in their depth.
Again, not interested in what those emotions were I turned to the malice. He looked... the same. The emotion on his face really was stuck that way. Our eyes met and then he vanished. The moment he was gone, the rest of the shadows followed.
The entire ball room was speechless. You could hear a pin drop. Then all the Alphas stalked towards me asking questions. They wanted to know what had just happened. I stared at them uninterested as they demanded answers I couldn't give them. The rest of the pack followed with the questioning but I was not interested in what they were saying. I looked at the strange guy one last time. He was standing now but still watching me.
He crossed his arms and his expression was that of a perfect poker face. They showed no emotion.
I looked back down at Jebidiah who was just getting up. He was staring at me with confusion.
Our eyes me, and whatever he saw in my eyes caused his to widen but that was the least of my problem because I heard a crack. Actually I think the entire room heard it judging from the gasped and silence that followed. I think my heart just cracked! I put my hands over my heart. The pain that gripped me was unmanageable. I couldn't breathe. I felt like my heart was bleeding. My body hurt all over like someone was poking me with thousands sharp needles and rubbing salt into the wnds
Thick liquid was coming out of my eyes. When one dropped on my hands I looked at it and saw that it was blood. I was crying blood. I cruel myself into a ball as pain shot from every nerve in my body. For some reason I was soaked in blood. It was like little holes were opened on my skin and blood was gushing out.
While my entire body hurt, nothing was more painful than what I was feeling in my heart. I couldn't explain the pain my heart was feeling. The only words I could find were that it was completely broken and shattered. My wolf was curled into a ball as well whimpering from the pain. My lungs burned and hurt from not getting any air. I didn't know how to feed them the air they needed. It was like I forgot how to breathe. The signals responsible for telling me to breathe were destroyed.
"What's happening" I heard a familiar voice cried but I didn't know who. I didn't care who. I felt myself being picked up by strong arms.
"Hold on," a voice called to me. I squinted my eyes trying desperately to see spoke; it was the strange guy who picked me up. Shadows began to dance before my eyes and I knew I was blacking out.
"Don't black out. Hold on everything will be fine. Where is the infirmary?" I heard him scream before I blocked out.
I claw at his hands, indicating that I cannot breathe;
Call you later!โ€ Emmanuel Lowe hung up on his mother impatiently.
The twenty-eight-year-old man had never been in a relationship.

After spending seven years in the army, he retired from the military and worked at a hospital in Yeringham for three years.

He was a gynecologist at the hospital and made eighty thousand a year.

Worried he would end up old and alone, Emmanuel's mother urged him to settle down. Since he had no idea where to begin when it came to dating, his mother took matters into her own hands and set him up on multiple blind dates.

Thanks to her efforts, he had gone on seventeen blind dates so far.

Alas, wedding bells were clearly not on the horizon for Emmanuel. It was frustrating. He knew he was just going through the motions at that point.

โ€œHelp! Someone help me!โ€

Right before Emmanuel entered the cafรฉ, he heard someone calling out weakly for help.

The cries came from an old man who had fallen on the roadside. Many pedestrians walked past him, but no one dared to stop and help him to his feet.

After all, helping the old man could be more trouble than it was worth if one ended up with an expensive lawsuit for injuring him further. No one would do something that risky and foolish.

It did not deter Emmanuel from stepping forward and helping the man to his feet. He asked, โ€œAre you all right, sir?โ€

โ€œI'm fine! Thank you so much, young man! It's so hard to find people as kind as you these days. I must repay you for your kindness!โ€ replied the old man with a smile.

Emmanuel realized then that the old man's attire was at odds with his airs. Despite his tattered clothes, the old man's clean hands looked like those of a man accustomed to wealth.

Still, he had no time to satisfy his curiosity. After confirming that the old man was unharmed, Emmanuel rushed into the cafรฉ for his blind date. He never once considered being repaid for his kind act earlier.

The cafรฉ was massive and practically structured like a maze.

Emmanuel's mother mentioned that his blind date was seated at table number eight. He wandered through the confusing cafรฉ, but before he could locate the correct table, he stumbled into a special area.

The lighting was softer there, and the floor was scattered with fresh petals.

The sweet scent of flowers wafted through the air. He wondered if he had set foot in heaven.

Emmanuel raised his eyes and immediately froze.

A beautiful, elegant woman sat before a table in the room.

It was no exaggeration to say she embodied perfection itself.

The heavens clearly decided to shower all their favors on her.

The woman quietly sipped her coffee with her legs crossed neatly to the side. On the table was a non-translated copy of The Power Broker.

When she noticed Emmanuel barging into the room, she looked up at him in confusion and displeasure.

Thump! Thump! Thump!

When Emmanuel recovered from the shock of stumbling upon the beautiful stranger, he realized his heart was about to beat its way out of his chest.

Never once had he ever felt so attracted to a woman in his twenty-eight years of life.

The countless female bodies he had seen in his work as a gynecologist hardly appealed to him. At some point, he even wondered if he was attracted to women at all.

Against all odds, it seemed, the young woman before him made his heart race like a runaway horse.

Am I simply nervous, or am I already attracted to her?

More surprisingly, Emmanuel noticed a large number eight sign on the woman's table.

She's my blind date?

He took a deep breath to calm himself before approaching her table and taking a seat opposite her.

The young woman's expression grew increasingly flabbergasted. There was even a hint of hostility in her pretty eyes.

The audacity of this man! Barging into my private room is bad enough, but he's going to sit opposite me like it's nobody's business?

Emmanuel ignored her expression. It was not the first time a woman had scoffed at him.

They were free to go their separate ways after getting the blind date done and over with.

He introduced himself, declaring, โ€œHi! My name is Emmanuel Lowe. I'm twenty-eight years old, and I work as a gynecologist. I make eighty thousand a year and don't own a car or a house.โ€

Any man would need an incredible amount of courage to say such things to a woman, but Emmanuel appeared unusually calm and unfazed.

The young woman stared at him in shock. A moment later, her lips curved into a smirk, and she replied with an introduction of her own.

โ€œNice to meet you. I'm Mackenzie Quillen. I'm twenty-seven years old with dual doctorates in finance and business administration from Harvard University. I made three billion last year, and I have a car and a house.โ€

Emmanuel was stunned.

What is happening?

He always thought women on blind dates came with red flags.

Mackenzie, however, was arguably flawless.

Where's the catch?

All sorts of fantastical theories filled Emmanuel's mind.

Mackenzie smirked at his perplexed expression. The pride in her cool gaze was evident.

She deliberately introduced herself to put the stranger in a difficult spot and intimidate him into retreating.

As expected, awkward silence lingered in the air after her words.

Urgh, forget it!

Whether Mackenzie was telling the truth was beside the point. Emmanuel decided to go through all the motions so he could at least mollify his mother, even if the date did not result in a trip to the altar.

He declared, โ€œI don't make much, but if you decide to date me, I promise I'll always protect and cherish you. I'll take over all the household chores so you can be a queen at home. Of course, I hope you'll allow me to preserve my masculine pride in front of my family. If we do get married, I can give you about five to six thousand every month.โ€

It was a well-worn script that Emmanuel recited in a single breath.

Mackenzie was dumbfounded at his earnest expression and apparent lack of shame at his much lower salary.

A long while later, she burst into a chuckle.

She had never met a man who could humor her so.

โ€œWhat are you laughing about?โ€ Unimpressed by her reaction, Emmanuel continued, โ€œI know I don't check all the boxes, but I promise I'll be a good and responsible husband if we're married!โ€

Pfft!

Mackenzie failed to keep in her snigger.

An annoyed Emmanuel demanded, โ€œWhy are you laughing, Ms. Quillen? Don't you think you're being rather rude?โ€

โ€œSir, you're a very good man!โ€ Mackenzie stopped smiling and retorted coldly, โ€œBut I think you're the confused one here. I'm not here for a blind date!โ€

Huh? What is going on?

Emmanuel's eyes widened in horror as he sputtered, โ€œIsn't this table number eight?โ€

โ€œYes, but this is the VIP area. You must be looking for table number eight in the common dining area. Please go out and turn right!โ€ She pointed a slender finger at the exit.

โ€œOh... Sorry! I'm so sorry! I mixed things up!โ€

Emmanuel wished he could sink into the floor in embarrassment. He jumped to his feet, ready to make a hasty escape.

That was so embarrassing! How could I sit at the wrong table for a blind date? No wonder she was laughing so much. She must have thought I was shooting above my weight!

Shortly after Emmanuel's departure, an old man entered Mackenzie's private room, escorted by four black-clad bodyguards.

Emmanuel would have been astonished if he was still around. The old man was none other than the stranger he had helped earlier in front of the cafรฉ!

He implored, โ€œPerhaps this is fate, Mackenzie. You're twenty-seven, but you've never been in a relationship because of your misandry. No man would dare come near you! But that young man succeeded! He's also a kind and just person. A while ago, he helped me outside the cafรฉ and didn't expect a reward for his actions!โ€

The old man's true identity was Terence Quillen, chairman of Yeringham's premier financial corporation.

While his wealth could trump that of entire nations, he had a major regret in life.

Terence had had three sons who tragically passed away before him. They either had no children of their own or only left daughters behind.

Mackenzie was Terence's favorite granddaughter and next-in-line to helm Terence Group.

Her intelligence and charisma did not change the fact that she was a woman.

Before Terence met his maker, he wished his favorite granddaughter could give him a great-grandchild.

That spurred him to fake his fall in front of the cafรฉ and scout a decent man for his granddaughter. To his surprise, the young man who helped him earlier made a blunder of his own blind date and ended up meeting Mackenzie instead.

Isn't that fate?

Mackenzie remained stoically unmoved by her grandfather's words. โ€œGrandpa, he may have passed your test, but he hasn't passed mine. I'll marry him if he aces my test.โ€

She wanted to fulfill her grandfather's wish, but she naturally wished to promise herself to a good man.

Marrying a man after one blind date was simply too hasty and careless.

Terence's gaze lit up expectantly, and he replied, โ€œAll right! I'm sure he will pass your test!โ€

Chapter 2 Failure

After turning right at the door, Emmanuel finally found table number eight in the common dining area.

Sure enough, a woman was seated at the table, looking like she was running out of patience.

Dressed in professional attire that accentuated her beautiful curves, she was, by all means, a sight to behold.

Even though she didn't exude the same air of elegance that Mackenzie had, there was no denying she had the power to make men fall at her feet.

Thankfully, Emmanuel wasn't disappointed in the slightest. After all, he was well aware of his own qualities.

Without further ado, he straightened himself up and approached the woman with a smile.

โ€œSorry I'm late! My name's Emmanuel Lowe. I'm twenty-eight years old, and I work as a gynecologist with an annual salary of eighty thousandโ€”โ€

โ€œStop!โ€ the woman coldly interrupted before he could finish his introduction. โ€œWhat's the meaning of this? With what little you have to offer; do you seriously think women would want to marry you? I can't believe you even had the nerve to be late! What right do you have to keep a woman waiting? This has been an utter waste of my time. Hmph!โ€

After firing off a barrage of questions, the red-faced woman angrily splashed a glass of water on Emmanuel's face.

The latter, who was caught off guard, instantly became soaking wet.

Nevertheless, Emmanuel didn't lose his temper. After all, he was indeed late because he went to the wrong place, so he could understand why the woman was upset.

โ€œHmph. You're twenty-eight and still only earning eighty-thousand a year. No wonder you're doing so poorly! Not only do you lack punctuality, but you also don't seem to take life seriously. You're doomed to be at the bottom of the social hierarchy your entire life! I'm shocked you even have the guts to go on a blind date with me... Stop being delusional!โ€ the woman scolded as she shot Emmanuel a look of contempt.

The next second, she grabbed her bag and stormed off, not once bothering to leave her name.

To add insult to injury, she even waved a wad of cash in front of Emmanuel's face, then slapped it hard on the table as payment for the bill.

The latter's gaze darkened instantly as rage began pulsing through his veins.

This woman is humiliating me! I may not have high expectations for marriage, but that doesn't mean I don't have a temper! Argh! As much as I want to make her regret her actions, I know I don't have that capability...

Since the woman was gone, Emmanuel, too, left the cafรฉ glumly.

To his surprise, he had only just stepped out the door when he saw a long-haired man deliberately colliding into a BMW and screaming in pain.

Emmanuel couldn't help but furrow his brows. Oh, gosh. That man is clearly staging a car accident. Why is there so much trouble in this cafรฉ today?

โ€œAh! Someone's been hit!โ€

โ€œArgh! My leg's broken! Murderer!โ€

Four men immediately rushed out to join the commotion when the long-haired man fell on the ground.

Thankfully, Emmanuel saw right through their ploy. Ha! Those guys must be the co-conspirators!

Just then, a young lady hastily exited the BMW, clad in a maroon sleeveless dress that revealed a large expanse of tender, fair skin.

โ€œWhat's the matter? How could I have injured your leg when I was driving so slowly?โ€ she asked anxiously.

Seconds later, the long-haired man's buddies surrounded the woman, demanding compensation. โ€œCut the crap! Pay up! Pay up now!โ€

Several people in the cafรฉ had witnessed the staged accident, but unfortunately, they were so afraid of the big, burly men that no one dared to confront them.

โ€œHow much do you guys want?โ€ the woman muttered helplessly, having resigned herself to the fact that she'd have to settle the matter with money.

The group of thugs, however, began leering at and drooling over her.

โ€œHaha. Hey, why don't you have some fun with us?โ€ one of the men suggested.

Just like that, what had started as a staged accident quickly turned into public harassment.

The pretty woman was so scared out of her wits that she staggered backward until she bumped into Emmanuel.

Instead of taking advantage of her like the other thugs, Emmanuel stepped in front of her and glared at the long-haired man.

โ€œYour leg's broken, and you're asking for compensation, huh?โ€

Upon seeing Emmanuel's menacing expression, the thugs felt chills down their spines.

At the same time, Mackenzie was sitting in the cafรฉ and watching the entire scene unfold.

Well, well, well. Who knew that man would be so brave? I'm sure no one else would have the guts to go up against five thugs.

The next second, Emmanuel stunned everyone by viciously kicking the long-haired man's leg.

โ€œArgh!โ€ the latter shouted in pain as he began hopping on the leg that was supposedly broken.

The onlookers instantly let out a collective gasp.

Goodness gracious! That man is daring!

Mackenzie, too, had curled her lips into a smile.

The cafรฉ was one of her properties, so naturally, she had also seen how Emmanuel's blind date went.

I thought he was a timid man when he didn't flare up despite being splashed with water. Who knew he was just a gentleman who doesn't lose his temper with women? I must admit, he looks rather charming when he shows his tough side!

โ€œWhat's this? Didn't you say your leg's broken? I'm impressed you can still jump on it!โ€ Emmanuel mocked.

When the onlookers realized that the long-haired man had lied about his injury, they wasted no time scolding and criticizing him.

By then, the other thugs had also lost their bravado and fell silent. After all, they knew the tables had turned on them.

โ€œHmph. I'll let you off this time. You'd better watch your back!โ€ the long-haired man warned before running away with his tail between his legs.

With that, the pretty woman gave Emmanuel a warm smile and coyly gestured for him to get into her car. โ€œHey, handsome, thank you so much for your help. Would you like to go to my house for a drink?โ€

Emmanuel, however, brushed her off without a second thought. โ€œNo, thank you. I have other things to do!โ€

Seeing how unmoved he was by her advances, the woman couldn't help but stomp her feet in frustration.

Back in the cafรฉ, Mackenzie heard her grandfather burst into loud guffaws.

โ€œHaha! I told you so, Mackenzie! Didn't I say that man has an excellent character? Your assistant, Lexi, is such a beautiful woman, yet he refuses to give her the time of day! Once you guys are married, you won't have to worry about him betraying you!โ€

The more Mackenzie ruminated about Terence's words, the more her impression of Emmanuel improved.

โ€œDon't be too happy yet, Grandpa! Men are either after looks or money,โ€ Mackenzie uttered coldly before getting up.

Ha! I doubt Emmanuel can pass my second secret test of character!

Meanwhile, Emmanuel had gotten home after his matchmaking session failed spectacularly.

Needless to say, his sister, Roselynn Lowe, was frustrated beyond belief. โ€œWhat? Another unsuccessful blind date?โ€

This is the eighteenth time, for goodness' sake! My brother's a six-foot tall, fit, and upstanding young man. Why won't any woman take a fancy to him? He may be thick-skulled at times, but surely, someone will still appreciate him for his good looks, won't they?

Emmanuel's mother, Alessandra Cadigan, seemed even more anxious as she hurriedly dragged him out of the house.

โ€œMom, what are you doing?โ€ Emmanuel asked, startled by how panic-stricken Alessandra was.

โ€œWhat am I doing? I'm worried sick about you!โ€ the woman scolded without breaking her stride. โ€œI don't understand it, either. Our neighbor's an unkempt twenty-eight-year-old novelist who's always cooped up at home, yet he's already planning for his second child! Why can't my son get a girlfriend? That woman didn't even stay for the blind date, did she? I paid good money to set this up for you! Let's go see her at her house right now!โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Emmanuel choked out.

Did I hear that right? I can't believe Mom has gotten this desperate! The matchmaking session was an utter failure, so why must she still insist on dragging me to the woman's place? Wouldn't I just be embarrassing myself again?

Chapter 3 Rags to Riches

In any relationship, the party taking the initiative was often seen as lowlier and more desperate.

Therefore, upon seeing Emmanuel and his family at her house, Milani Zimmerman wore an even haughtier expression than when she was at the cafรฉ.

Ha! I knew he wouldn't be able to get over my looks, so he's come to badger me again!

Milani's mother, Melody Claus, was just as smug when she learned of the Lowe family's intention.

โ€œIf your son wishes to marry my daughter, you'll have to give us a betrothal gift of five hundred thousand,โ€ she said as she raised her palm. โ€œWe won't accept anything less!โ€

Emmanuel's heart instantly sank.

Oh, my goodness! Five hundred thousand? Is she trying to sell her daughter?

Alessandra, however, gritted her teeth and nodded. โ€œT-That's fine!โ€

As long as my son can get married, I'll do anything to make up for the betrothal gift, even if it means selling the house!

โ€œYour family must also provide a car and matrimonial home!โ€ Milani's father chimed in. โ€œMore importantly, you're not going to let my daughter pay for any installments or maintenance fees!โ€

By then, Emmanuel was on the verge of losing his patience.

Shouldn't marriages be consensual? I don't expect both parties to be forking out the wedding expenses equally, but why does it feel like my family's here to surrender and be fleeced?

Alessandra, too, found herself in a tight spot.

She could sell the house to afford the betrothal gift, but how would she pay for the couple's car and home?

โ€œSure. That's no problem!โ€ Roselynn piped up, even going so far as to pull her brother back when she realized he wanted to object.

She was just as eager for Emmanuel to start a family, and at thirty years old, she had worked and saved up enough to make the necessary down payments for him.

Since Mom is settling the betrothal gift, I shall help Emmanuel with the car and home!

โ€œLastly, he will bear all household expenses after the wedding!โ€ Milani suddenly said.

That, however, was the last straw for Emmanuel. โ€œI don't mind paying this much if she's coming to work for us as a housekeeper, but if she expects to be treated like a princess or queen, you can forget it! I don't need that!โ€

โ€œLook at your son! What's with that attitude?โ€ Milani yelled. โ€œWe aren't even married yet, and he's already so domineering. Wouldn't it be worse down the road?โ€

โ€œNo, no, no... The marriage will work out. It'd work out just fine!โ€ Alessandra pleaded, desperate to finalize the wedding.

I can't wait any longer... I must fulfill my husband's last wish by the end of the year!

Having seen how things were going, even Roselynn knew she had to step in to persuade her mother. โ€œMom! Stop forcing it!โ€

Manny's right. There's nothing wrong with giving a betrothal gift, car, and house. However, asking him to be the sole supporter of his family after the wedding is too much! What about his wife, then? Why can't she chip in? Will she be sending her own money back to her parents?

Just then, Milani's younger brother, Jacob Zimmerman, suddenly appeared with a cocky grin plastered on his face. โ€œHaha! Don't forget about me, Milani! When it's my turn to get married, I'd be counting on you guys to buy me my car and house too!โ€

Upon hearing that, Emmanuel instantly exploded with rage.

โ€œWhat? Am I marrying your sister or your entire family? I may as well support all of you!โ€

Even though Emmanuel had only meant that as an angry remark, Milani decided to hold him to his word. โ€œHah! You'd better remember what you just said! In that case, I'll leave you to plan and pay for the wedding banquet and honeymoon. Don't tell me you can't afford that...โ€

โ€œGet lost! I'd rather marry anybody than you!โ€ Emmanuel retorted as the rage and ferocity he used to experience on the battlefield came flooding back.

He didn't know what the Zimmermans were playing at, but there was no doubt they were monsters.

โ€œLook at yourself! How dare you ask me for my hand in marriage! I'd rather marry anybody than you too!โ€ Milani snapped back.

Given my qualities, I have no problem marrying a rich man, so why should I settle for a man like Emmanuel? I'm only too happy that he wants to fall out with me!

After giving an exasperated laugh, Emmanuel stood up and stormed off, leaving Alessandra and Roselynn with no choice but to follow suit.

To their surprise, they had only just stepped out of the Zimmerman residence when three luxury cars pulled up in front of them.

The Zimmermans quickly popped out to see the commotion and almost dropped their jaws when they saw the car lineup.

Oh! Those cars are worth tens of millions! What's going on? Since when were the Lowes that fancy?

Emmanuel, on the other contrary, seemed to recognize one of the cars. Hmm... Didn't I see that car outside the cafรฉ?

The next second, Terence stepped out of the car, surrounded by his convoy of suited bodyguards.

He smiled as he approached Emmanuel and said politely, โ€œI'm here to return the favor, Mr. Lowe, after you helped me outside the cafรฉ!โ€

Needless to say, everyone was stunned.

Roselynn couldn't hide her excitement and gripped her brother's arm tightly.

Ah! Isn't this like those rags-to-riches stories?

The more Emmanuel thought about it, the more he frowned. Wow... Who knew this old man was a millionaire? Could he have intentionally fallen at the cafรฉ?

Terence waved his hand, and within seconds, his subordinates had unloaded several boxes of gifts.

Not only were there precious stones and jewelry, but there were also famous paintings, antiques, and even a Porsche key.

The total value of the items had to be at least ten million.

For someone who earned a mere eighty thousand a year, ten million was an eye-watering amount of money that Emmanuel could only dream of!

Upon witnessing the scene, the Zimmerman family almost collapsed in shock.

Milani might be a well-dressed woman, but the truth was, her family was just like any other average family. To them, ten million was undoubtedly an astronomical sum!

If I had known Emmanuel would become a multi-millionaire, I'd have married him straightaway!

After snapping out of her daze, she smiled and hastily clutched Emmanuel's arm.

โ€œWhat's the matter, darling? Oh, wow... You're so kind to help the elderly! I love that about you!โ€

โ€œWho's your darling?โ€ Emmanuel asked, embarrassing Milani so much that she wanted to crawl into a hole.

As though that wasn't enough, he brusquely pushed her away and added, โ€œDidn't you just reject me? Why are you still calling me that?โ€

โ€œUh... Iโ€”โ€ Milani muttered, clearly at a loss for words.

Her family, too, was incredibly frustrated.

After all, they had just missed out on getting a wealthy son-in-law!

Meanwhile, Alessandra was about to say something when Roselynn tugged at her.

As much as I want Manny to start a family, I can't let him settle for the horrible Zimmermans! Besides, he's rich now! I'm sure he can find a better woman!

โ€œMom, Roselynn, let's go!โ€ Emmanuel said before ushering both women into the car.

He didn't want to accept the gifts, especially since he knew he hadn't done anything to deserve them. However, it wasn't the time and place to discuss the matter, so he decided to leave instead.

Once the Lowe family had left, a gust of cold wind swept over the Zimmermans as they seethed silently.

โ€œHow could you have made such remarks earlier, Milani? Do you think it's easy to find a millionaire these days?โ€ Melody berated.

โ€œW-What should I do now, then?โ€

In all honesty, Milani was at a complete loss. She had gone on several blind dates to find a rich husband who could give her a life of luxury.

Alas, who knew she'd let a multi-millionaire slip right through her fingers?

โ€œWhat else can we do? They've already come to our place to ask for your hand in marriage. Can't we do the same?โ€ Melody suggested.

Jacob, who was just as anxious, instantly exclaimed, โ€œI don't care, Milani! You have to marry that multi-millionaire! When my girlfriend and I get married, you must give us a house and a luxury car! Otherwise, I'll disown you!โ€

โ€œOkay, okay. I got it!โ€ Milani replied with a long sigh.

Argh! Emmanuel and I left on such bad terms... Would he still care about me?

๐Ÿ‘‰To continue reading the story for free, download the app and search๐Ÿ“š"Love at the Wrong Table".
He looked... the same.
