❤️😍What happens next👉Click Here to read on👉 | Chapter 1 Sebastian Lake arrived at the police station three hours after receiving a call. Madeline Stone had already fallen asleep on the metal bench outside. She was curled up. Her skirt had a high slit, revealing the fair skin. Sebastian took his suit jacket off and threw it over her. After settling the procedures, he led Madeline, who was yawning, out of the police station. "Have I been letting you go hungry or something?" He narrowed his eyes and gave Madeline a sidelong glance. He had a pointed smile on his face. It had been about half a year since they had last slept with each other. Madeline said lazily, "Something like that." Sebastian chuckled. "You're really something, alright." Madeline had been arrested because she had kicked a young man in the groin while drinking at a bar. The young man claimed Madeline had seduced him, and she hadn't bothered denying it. Either way, she knew that Sebastian would handle the matter and wouldn't care what had happened. This was especially true because today was a special day. It was Madeline's birthday and also Sebastian's mother's birthday. Per tradition, Sebastian should have made an appearance at the Lake residence with her. It was the best outcome for everyone. But Sebastian had disappeared before the whole family while standing at the Lake residence's doorstep. He hadn't given them any explanation whatsoever. All he had done was leave Madeline, his fiancée of six years, to force out an awkward smile and have a meal with the Lake family. Madeline thought it was a good idea to annoy him with this matter. Now that Sebastian was here, she nodded nonchalantly and opened the door to the passenger seat of the car. When she saw the pink cushion on the seat, she shut the door and got into the back seat. Sebastian started driving. "Why are you sitting at the back?" "I don't want your lover to get mad." Having a pink cushion on the seat was someone's way of marking their territory. All women understood that. Sebastian said, "She's not my lover." "What is she, then?" Madeline asked in a low voice. After a while, she chuckled. "Don't tell me you're serious about this one." He rubbed his temple and said lazily, "We can talk about being serious at some other time. She hasn't said yes to me yet." Madeline teased, "I can't believe any woman would say no to you." Sebastian smiled without saying anything. The journey continued in silence until his phone rang. "I'll be there soon. Wait for me in bed." His tone was so gentle and tender. It had been years since Madeline had heard him sound like that. She opened her eyes and stared at the back of his head until he hung up. Then, she said, "Pull over here. I'll take a cab." Sebastian didn't say anything. He continued driving until they arrived at her apartment in the suburbs south of the city. He wrapped an arm around her waist as they stood in the elevator. After unlocking the apartment door, he pushed her inside and over to the couch. Sebastian's arousal was obvious. Madeline didn't reject him. When they were done, he got up and slowly got dressed. As he walked to the foyer to put on his shoes, he glanced at Madeline, who was tucked cozily under a shawl. "Call me in the future if you need someone to have fun. Don't go after men outside. They're not clean." Madeline fell asleep with the shawl wrapped around her. Sebastian left without saying another word. … The following day, Madeline went home after receiving a call from her mother, Rosemary York. The latter frowned and asked in a small voice, "What happened last night? Did Sebastian leave with the Lake family watching him?" Sebastian had never gotten along with his family. The number of times he returned home each year could be counted on one hand. It was only after Madeline and Sebastian had gotten engaged that they realized Madeline and Sebastian's mother, Caroline Jones, shared a birthday. From that moment on, Caroline had used Madeline's birthday as an excuse to have a gathering at the Lake residence every year. It was also her way of making Sebastian visit her. Because of this, Caroline had never said anything nasty to Madeline, despite not really liking her. This was the first time that Sebastian hadn't allowed Caroline to use Madeline as an excuse. It was also his way of announcing to the world that Madeline meant nothing to him, despite their six-year engagement. Madeline put down her cutlery. After some thought, she decided to give Rosemary some time to prepare herself. "I think Sebastian's going to call off the engagement soon, Mom." Chapter 2 As Madeline had expected, her words made Rosemary start to panic. The Lake family was a prominent family in Southville. Rosemary's current husband, Gregory Samson, wasn't too bad, but he did need to depend on the Lake family for certain things. Gregory had a son with his ex-wife, one who had never liked Rosemary. After marrying Gregory, Rosemary had a daughter with him. But because of a heart condition, the daughter spent her days abroad. Things hadn't gone too smoothly in the early days of Rosemary and Gregory's marriage. Later, after Madeline had gotten involved with Sebastian, Rosemary's status in the Samson family had been elevated. Madeline hadn't intended to tell Rosemary about this so soon, but Rosemary's life had been too smooth for the past six years. Madeline had to keep her on her toes. After getting over her panic, Rosemary started crying. Madeline grabbed some tissues to dry Rosemary's tears, then left before the latter could say anything. Rosemary's dead ex-husband and Gregory, who could be considered her first love, had doted on her so much that crying and begging for help were the only things she knew to do when in trouble. Madeline didn't want to listen to her begging now. On the way home, Madeline glanced at a large screen by the road. It played a clip of a young woman in a bunny suit. She was prancing around as part of her role as the ambassador for a game. She looked innocent and obedient. Madeline stole a few more glances at it before driving off. When she arrived home, she was surprised to see that Sebastian was there. The lights were off, leaving the television as the only source of light. Even though he was seated, Sebastian looked tall and regal. He leaned against the couch and focused on the television while holding a controller. His long legs were carelessly thrown over the coffee table. He didn't look at Madeline when he heard the sound of the door opening. He continued pressing the controller's buttons. Madeline found this odd. Sebastian rarely came to her apartment nowadays. Before her birthday yesterday, they had last seen each other four months ago. And even then, they had run into each other at the business club. At the time, he had had an arm around a young woman's shoulders as he looked at her affectionately. Madeline had been there for a business dinner. When their eyes had met, Sebastian had smiled at her but didn't let go of the young woman. Then, he and the young woman had brushed past her. His attitude had been identical to how he had acted four years ago when he had told her that he had had enough. He had said, "I'm bored. Let's have our own fun from now on." "Why didn't you turn the lights on?" Madeline reached for the switch. "Don't. They'll kill the mood," Sebastian said without turning back. Madeline glanced at the television. He was playing the game that she had seen advertised earlier. It wasn't like his usual style. He preferred action and strategy games that gave him adrenaline rushes. It looked like he was willing to change his style for the young woman in the advertisement. Madeline didn't want to watch him any longer. She put her bag down before heading to the bathroom to take a shower. When she came out, the lights had been turned on. Sebastian gave her a sidelong glance and asked, "Do you want to call off our engagement?" She grabbed a towel and wrapped it around herself. "Not yet." "Don't tell your mother nonsense if you don't want things to be over yet, then." "Is she in contact with you?" "She calls me now and then." Sebastian chuckled. "She coos at me and asks how I'm doing." In the past, Sebastian had never spoken like this. When they had first gotten together, he had been relatively immature. He liked to kick up fusses and act coquettishly with her. He had only become the way he was now after losing interest in her. He always had a smile on and sounded gentle, but that was the extent of it. It didn't seem to come from his heart. Despite that, the way he chuckled now got on Madeline's nerves. She said, "I'll tell her not to call you anymore." Sebastian nodded. "Did you come all the way here just to tell me about this?" she asked. He took in her face, which was red from her shower. He parted his lips to say something. At that moment, his phone rang. It interrupted their conversation. Madeline glanced at it. The caller ID indicated that "Little Bunny" was calling him. Sebastian answered it and said a few sweet nothings before hanging up. He pinched Madeline's face and said, "I'm leaving." … The following day, Madeline went to the company. Someone from the advertising department came to finalize the details of their proposal for an ambassadorship. Madeline flipped through it casually. When she got to the page on the proposed candidate for the ambassadorship, she paused and glanced at the photo. Then, she handed it to her assistant to deal with the rest. The assistant left. After a while, she returned, looking a little awkward. "The proposed candidate for the ambassadorship is Natasha White." "I know. What's up with her?" "She … She's the Lake family's … I mean, your fiancé's current—" "Rumored girlfriend," Madeline said bluntly. "He has plenty of those." Chapter 3 Ever since Sebastian had announced that he and Madeline were to live separate lives and have their own fun, he had been rumored to be in relationships with countless starlets and models. Madeline sounded so frank about it that her assistant was lost for words. Madeline said, "It's fine. Go ahead and do what you need to." She had been working at the Samson family's company for four years. Rosemary, who liked to boast, had spread the word about Madeline and Sebastian's relationship to anyone who would listen. Sebastian and Natasha had been together for about half a year now, but the rumors had only started flying two months ago. Hence, the whole company knew about it. … The following afternoon, Madeline ran into Natasha, who was at the company for a trial shoot. The latter wasn't tall—only about five feet and three inches. She was skinnier than she looked on screen, and her tone was gentle and cutesy when she spoke. She seemed like the demure, timid type. It was no wonder Sebastian liked her. She was obedient, like how Gwen Lynch, Sebastian's first love, had appeared to be. Still, Natasha's professionalism was no match for Gwen. She also wasn't the greatest at withstanding stress. The cameraman had spent ages telling Natasha what to do, but Natasha still couldn't meet his expectations. Because of that, the cameraman proceeded to give her a scolding. Though she hadn't given up on the shooting, she had locked herself up in the restroom for a good cry. She ignored anyone and everyone who knocked on the door of her cubicle, refusing to come out. The studio had been reserved in advance and only for two days. There was still a buttload of work to do. Madeline knocked on the door. "Come out. We can talk about this." Natasha continued crying. Madeline's tone turned impatient. "You need to be professional when you're working. If you can't handle a small matter like this, how are you going to survive in the entertainment industry?" As soon as the words were out of her mouth, she noticed that silence had descended upon the room. Madeline turned her head to meet Sebastian's gaze as he made his way through the crowd. His expression was hard to discern. Madeline averted her gaze. Sebastian knocked on the door and started coaxing Natasha gently. He did it with Madeline and everyone else watching, too. Natasha finally opened the door. Her eyes were red and swollen from her crying. She threw herself into Sebastian's arms, looking unbelievably aggrieved. Sebastian held her and said a few words of consolation before turning to Madeline. "Be gentle to her for my sake, Madeline. Nat's the timid type." Madeline smiled. "Stay with her. At least it'll make things proceed smoothly." Her tone was gentle, and her smile was genuine. She seemed casual and relaxed. Sebastian nodded. … That night, photos of Sebastian with his arms around Natasha at Samson Group appeared at the Lake residence. Sebastian and Madeline were both summoned to the Lake residence. Sebastian's father, Michael Lake, liked Madeline. He made sure to lecture Sebastian before Madeline. He barked, "End things with that woman right this instant!" "Why should I?" Sebastian countered. "You and my mom have been living separate lives all these years. If you two can do it, why can't I? Besides …" He glanced at Madeline, who stood beside him. "Do you mind?" Madeline said, "No." Sebastian turned back to Michael. "See? Maddy doesn't care." It had been a long time since Sebastian had called her Maddy. Madeline lowered her gaze without saying anything else. … Sebastian and Madeline left the house together. They stopped at the entrance, where Sebastian was smoking. After some thought, Madeline turned to head to her car. Sebastian grabbed her by the wrist. Madeline turned back to look at him dazedly. "What's up?" He let her go. "Nothing. Don't drive too fast." Madeline headed to the Samson residence. Gregory was already waiting for her in the study. There was an ugly look on his handsome face. When Madeline entered the study, he threw a stack of photos that he had printed in front of her. "How many times has this happened now?" Madeline looked down at the photos. She could no longer keep track of the number of times Sebastian had been caught with another woman. This was the first time it had reached the Samson residence, though. Gregory barked, "You've disgraced the Samson family!" Madeline said, "I didn't expect him to be so protective of Natasha in public." "You can only contribute to the Samson family by marrying Sebastian Lake, Madeline. If you can't manage that, you're nothing but a piece of trash." Gregory added, "So are your mother and sister." Madeline nodded. "I understand." She turned to open the study's door. When she met a sycophantic Rosemary's gaze, she shut the door before turning to leave. Rosemary grabbed her wrist. "Maddy …" Her voice was soft and coquettish. She was almost 50 years old, yet she was still acting like a child. She sounded somewhat aggrieved as she said, "You've got to work harder, Maddy. Your brother's coming home soon. I'm scared." Chapter 4 Madeline looked down at Rosemary. The latter was begging, but it was also a threat. "Your sister's still abroad at one of the Samson family's hospitals. She's being treated there." Madeline pulled her arm out of Rosemary's grasp. Then, she left. … The following day, Natasha showed up at the studio. Sebastian was with her. Madeline was also at the studio to keep an eye on things, but she looked dispirited. Around 10:00 am, Natasha approached her. Her tone was cautious and scared as she said, "I heard you're Seb's fiancée." Madeline looked up at her. "I am. Did you need anything?" "I … I … Yesterday, I …" Natasha couldn't get the words out. She ran back to Sebastian. He bent down to listen to her speak. His expression was doting and affectionate. Madeline watched them for a while longer before looking down at her phone. Then, a shadow fell over her as a figure stood before her. She looked up. Sebastian asked, "Did you have a bad night's sleep?" Instead of answering, Madeline asked, "Did I scare her?" "Who?" "Your little bunny," she teased. "Should I apologize to her?" Sebastian smiled faintly. "You're really something." "We're supposed to have our own fun, right? I can't cross that line." Madeline's long hair cascaded over her shoulders as she leaned against the couch leisurely. Her tone was warm and gentle as she said, "Tell me if I've scared her. I'll apologize to her." Sebastian said, "Go back to your office. Your presence here is scaring her. I'll keep an eye on things. Your work won't be delayed." The way Madeline saw it, Sebastian wasn't too much of a scumbag. He had an endless stream of women by his side, but he was still a considerate fiancé. At the very least, he didn't actually make her apologize for what had happened the day before. And so, Madeline crossed the line for once. "Let's have lunch together. Don't bring your little bunny. I have a resting face. I don't want to scare her." Sebastian agreed to it. Madeline put her phone away before leaving. At noon, Sebastian called her and told her to meet him for lunch. As they ate, he said, "She's timid and different from the others. Be gentle with her." Madeline paused while cutting her steak. This was Sebastian's third time repeating himself. It looked like he was truly worried she would scare Natasha off. For the past four years, Sebastian had gone through countless women. Most of them closed to him and looked like they were only interested in having a fling with him. Those relationships hadn't lasted long. Natasha seemed to be different, though. Sebastian had been with her for about half a year now. More importantly, she was almost identical to his first love—a woman he'd doted on and cared for like she was a precious treasure. Coincidentally, that was the type Madeline hated to the core. To make matters worse, Natasha was still acting lovey-dovey with Sebastian in front of her, despite knowing she was his fiancée and being afraid of her. This meant Sebastian had explained some things to her, or at least … given her a promise. Madeline lowered her head as she continued cutting her steak. "What are your plans?" Sebastian looked unruffled. "What plans?" "Are you going to make things official with her?" Madeline set her cutlery down and wiped her mouth daintily. Then, she sat up elegantly and smiled. "When should I make way for her?" Sebastian faltered, then chuckled. He switched his sliced steak with hers. "She hasn't said yes to me yet." Madeline didn't believe that. Judging from how head over heels Natasha had seemed, there was no way she hadn't agreed to be with him. Still, Sebastian's words and Natasha's attitude made one thing clear—Sebastian was serious about her and did indeed have plans to make things official with her. Madeline speared a piece of steak and ate it. … At the end of the month, Michael called Sebastian and instructed him to bring Madeline over for a family gathering. Sebastian made his appearance, but he had hurried off soon after, even though the gathering had just begun. Natasha's advertisement had just gone live and gained some traction. Then, someone had exposed her for being a bully in school. One of her crazed fans had been disillusioned by this scoop and had trapped her on the highway. She remained there as she bawled her eyes out. Madeline looked at the photos while in her office. Half an hour ago, Sebastian had been caught carrying Natasha off the highway. Madeline threw the photos aside. She called a public relations company that she had ties with and asked them to help take the trending articles down. That afternoon, she received a call from Michael. "I'm sorry about this, and thanks for your efforts." "It's nothing. It's what I'm supposed to do." Michael paused. "You shouldn't have to go through this. I'll teach him a lesson." Madeline said, "Sebastian's just having some fun. He's not ready to settle down yet." She was a year older than Sebastian. Her tone was obedient and gentle as she said, "Don't be mad, Mr. Lake. Your blood sugar was a little high when you had your last medical checkup, right? You have to watch out for your health." Chapter 5 After hanging up, Michael barked at Sebastian, "You're the heir to the Lake family, yet you got caught with some nondescript celebrity and had your fiancée clean up your mess. "How do you expect me to face the Samson family when you've pulled something like this?" Sebastian looked listless. "Oh." Michael patted his chest in an attempt to suppress his rage. "Go back to work. Go back to the company." Sebastian had been lazing around for four years now. For the first two years, he had enjoyed life and had lived it up. Back then, he had only been 21 years old. Michael had still been relatively healthy then, so he had left Sebastian alone. Now that his health was deteriorating, he couldn't allow Sebastian to waste his life anymore. Sebastian didn't say anything. Michael softened his tone and said, "I'm begging you, son." Sebastian still didn't agree to anything, but when Madeline caught wind of this, she heard that he had said yes. … That night, Madeline received a call from Sebastian. "Come out for a drink." It was a statement, not a question. Madeline wasn't really interested, but Sebastian hung up immediately after giving the order. He didn't even give her the chance to object. Madeline changed into a nice dress before heading to the bar he frequented. When she sat down beside him, he already looked tipsy. His slender fingers were pressed to his temples, and his eyes were narrowed slightly. He looked tired. Madeline ordered a glass of whiskey. She was about to drink it when a hand clamped over the mouth of the glass. Sebastian opened his eyes and said blankly, "She called me today." Madeline paused. "Who?" "Gwen." "Oh." Madeline dragged it out. "Your first love." Sebastian's eyes were slightly red. "She asked me whether the woman in the photos was her substitute." Then, he chuckled. He seemed to be mocking an immature term like "substitute". Madeline didn't dare to do the same, though. Immature terms like that were right up Sebastian's alley. "What did you say to her?" "I asked her how she had found out about it. The articles were taken down so quickly that even I didn't see the photos. I asked her how she had seen them." Madeline clenched her fists, but her smile remained in place. "And then?" Sebastian suddenly flicked her on the forehead. "I told her that she was right. I couldn't forget about her, so I had to find myself someone who was just like her." He laid his arm on the bar counter and put his head on it. He looked at Madeline lazily. "She told me she still has feelings for me. Do you think she's telling the truth?" "I guess. If your parents hadn't been against her, you two would have gotten engaged back then," Madeline said. Sebastian chuckled, but it didn't seem to come from his heart. It didn't mean anything, but it added to his handsomeness. Madeline glanced at him a few more times before smiling. Then, she took a sip of her whiskey. It was fiery and burned as she swallowed it. Sebastian said, "You two used to be best friends. Even though you're no longer in contact with each other, you're still speaking up for her, huh?" Madeline paused. Sebastian continued, "And it wasn't that my parents were against us. "She thought I came from a regular family. When my mother told her she could send her abroad to continue her education, she left without another look back." Madeline knew this. She knew it better than anyone. After Gwen's departure, Sebastian had tried to drown his sorrows in drinks. Once, he and Madeline had ended up having drunken intimacy. It had been his first time. It had been the same for her. Back then, Sebastian had been young and relatively responsible. Before Madeline could say anything, he had asked her to marry him. That was how they had gotten engaged. They had similar family backgrounds, and neither family had objected to it. The engagement went even smoother than Madeline had anticipated. Then, they had stayed like that to this day. Madeline pursed her lips. "You can't be sure what your mother said to Gwen, though. You know how timid Gwen is. And it's not like she's the materialistic type." She added, "Your mother can be pretty nasty sometimes. You know that." After a long silence, Sebastian sighed. "But I also have feelings for Nat, Maddy." Madeline turned to look at him. He continued, "What should I do?" He put his hands together, then drew them apart. His eyes flashed with amusement. "My feelings for them are pretty much equal. Wait, no. I think I don't feel as strongly for Gwen as I do for Nat. After all, it's been six years. "She only called me after finding out that I'm the heir to the Lake family from those photos. It repulses me a little, really." He sounded serious, and there seemed to be a tinge of hurt in his eyes. But who knew whether it was genuine? Madeline thought about it, then said nonchalantly, "Okay." Sebastian smiled and said, "I want to do you right now." Chapter 6 Madeline was dragged over to the storage room beside the restroom. Sebastian was uncharacteristically rough this time. One side of Madeline's dress was torn by the time they were done. She pursed her swollen lips and followed him back to her apartment in the suburbs. Sebastian stayed the night—not that it made any difference. He spent the whole night gaming in the living room. Then, around dawn, he went to Madeline's room and had his way with her until the sky was completely bright. Madeline couldn't take it anymore and wanted to kick him out. His mood was obviously terrible because of Gwen's sudden reappearance. All he did was sit silently in the living room while smashing the controller's buttons. After a while, he complained, "Your TV screen is too small." This was his fifth time complaining about it since Madeline had moved to this apartment. Madeline grunted in acknowledgment. Sebastian continued, "Get a new one." "Some day, maybe." "I'll get it for you." "Nah." Madeline subconsciously rejected him. He gave her a look before leaving. Madeline didn't need to go to work today. She spent the rest of the day sleeping and recharging. The following day, the advertising department's manager dropped by her office. The fact that Natasha was embroiled in a scandal right after the advertisement had gone live was bad for the brand, so they wanted to take down the advertisement for the time being. It could be launched again once things had died down. Madeline vetoed this. The manager didn't understand. "Why?" "Sebastian's going back to Lake Corporation soon. With the Lake family backing her up, this little scandal won't affect much." The manager had never met any other woman who could speak about her fiancé's affair so openly. He hesitated. Madeline asked, "Will Natasha be dropping by later to shoot a few extra things?" "Yes." After that, Madeline persuaded the manager to leave. In the afternoon, she went over to the studio with a coffee in hand. From a distance, she saw a young woman in a white dress waiting outside. She was slender, and her tresses cascaded over her shoulders. Just the sight of her side profile made one think of pure and unblemished things. Compared to her earlier naïveté, there was a somewhat glumness to her now. Madeline stood where she was and took a sip of her iced coffee. Then, she watched as Natasha ran right into Gwen, who had returned from abroad. They were both innocent little bunnies who were too timid for arguments. Five minutes later, there was a conclusion—they both started crying. Feeling disdainful, Madeline guessed that they had squabbled over who was whose substitute. After watching them for a while longer, she turned to leave. To her surprise, she crashed right into a hard chest. Sebastian took her coffee away. His voice was cool and calm as he said, "You called Gwen back from abroad." Madeline pursed her lips. "What are you even talking about?" The way she saw it, her relationship with Sebastian was much healthier than the one his parents had with each other—they got along, at least. In fact, in the first two years, there had even been some clinginess—though mostly on Sebastian's part. In the following four years, Madeline and Sebastian had co-existed like regular acquaintances. They occasionally shared a bed, called each other, and visited each other's families … They could even link arms with bright smiles and chat with each other. When Madeline had the time, she would even comment on the quality of Sebastian's latest pursuit. He would always react with a smile or chuckle. He was rarely this grim and cold. It seemed like Madeline had crossed his bottom line. He took a sip of her coffee. "Drop the act." Madeline would die before admitting anything. She asked innocently, "What act?" Sebastian sneered. "Just be straight with me if you don't want me to make things official with Nat. Stop doing dumb things like this." "I really don't know—" "As long as I insist on it, my mother will eventually accept Natasha. You know why? Because she's clean despite being a celebrity. Plus, she comes from an educated family and can help alleviate the tension between me and my mother. "With Gwen, things are different. The fact that she accepted my mother's money to go study abroad six years ago has already predetermined that it will be difficult for her to marry me." Madeline's expression darkened. Sebastian crossed his arms and looked at her coldly. "You've gone too far, Madeline." She pursed her lips. "It wasn't me." "Don't interfere in anything that has to do with me and Gwen." Madeline instinctively wanted to ask, "Why? Is it because I'm not worthy of that?" But she caught herself in time and swallowed her words. Sebastian left. Chapter 7 Madeline and Sebastian were having a cold war. The longest they had gone without seeing each other was half a year, but that hadn't been a cold war. Madeline had known that if she had called him, he would have answered. He would also have shown up if she needed him for something. This time, the two calls she had given him went unanswered. He didn't return them, either. That night, Madeline was summoned to the Samson residence. As she looked at the sheepskin whip that Gregory held, she pursed her lips and asked, "What's wrong?" "Sebastian called me and implied that the Lake family will no longer be giving me the piece of land that I want," Gregory said. Madeline's breathing hitched. She balled her hands into fists. "The Lake family has already made it clear that that piece of land is one of the many wedding gifts they had prepared for Sebastian's future wife. Do you know what Sebastian means by that?" It meant that Sebastian planned to call off his engagement with her. Madeline didn't say anything. Samson bowed his head. "Get on your knees." Madeline did as she was told. Later, she dragged herself out of the study with sweat beaded all over her forehead. She hurt everywhere, but there were no wounds to be found. Rosemary waited by the door. She tiptoed as she wiped Madeline's hair. "It must hurt, sweetie." Madeline brushed her hand away. "Don't touch me." Rosemary was taken aback. Then, she started crying. "This is all because I'm useless. I know it's all my fault, Maddy, but you're my daughter. Isn't it only right for you to share my burden? "Your sister was born with a heart condition—that's something that we'll always need money for. And your brother's coming back soon. You know how he's never liked me. "If you don't do something to make me look good, how am I going to survive this?" Madeline watched her as she cried. Then, she left, holding a hand to support her waist. When she got to the entrance, she couldn't resist kicking one of the trees. … In the middle of the month, Madeline suddenly received a WhatsApp message. "Help me." The message was from someone whose profile picture was of a white flower standing strong in a breeze. It was exactly the same as Gwen's profile picture in her email. Madeline didn't remember saving her number, though. She typed, "Who are you?" Then, she regretted it. She wanted to delete the message. But before she could, Gwen called her. Madeline answered it. Gwen's voice was timid. She sounded like a mewling cat, but her words were ruthless. "Help me get Sebastian back." Madeline gripped her phone tightly. "You want me to help you? I'm his fiancée, Gwen." "Yes, you. If not for you telling me that he could only afford to wear clothes from the Salvation Army, I wouldn't have gone abroad after taking his mother's money." Madeline pursed her lips. "Back then, I had no idea he was the heir to the Lake family." "How is that possible?" Gwen spat. "You wouldn't have swooped in right after I left if you hadn't known! You even gave up on Fred Shaw despite me giving him to you." It had been a few years since Madeline had heard that name. Gwen continued, "Others might not be aware of this, but I know very well how much you liked him." Madeline still didn't say anything. Gwen added, "Natasha told me that Sebastian personally admitted he wouldn't marry you and didn't even like you. "You're nothing but a tool for him to keep his family from bothering him. I'm sure you and Sebastian both know that. "Otherwise, you wouldn't be wagging your tail at his mistresses and lovers. You don't act the way a proper fiancée should at all." Madeline said, "You should change your personality first." Gwen fell silent. Madeline continued, "Natasha can't even string a few words together when she talks to me. Sebastian's upset for her and has already reminded me a few times to be gentle. "You, on the other hand, can't stop talking. You're completely different from how you used to be." Gwen snapped, "I—" Madeline cut her off. "Go back to being the Gwen that Sebastian used to like." She hung up and went to the Lake residence. Michael wasn't in, but Caroline was. Madeline stood to one side obediently while listening to her talk about different types of orchids. Suddenly, Caroline said, "Natasha's been with Sebastian for about half a year now, right?" "Yeah." "Does Sebastian like her?" "Yes." "What does she look like? Do you have any photos of her?" As soon as the words were out of her mouth, Caroline realized how inappropriate she was being. No matter how mild Madeline's temper was and how little she cared about Sebastian's affairs, she was still Sebastian's fiancée. Caroline cleared her throat and changed the topic. "How are you and Sebastian getting along?" "Pretty well." Caroline had started disliking Madeline four years ago. Most adults had a common problem—they were fake. Having affairs left, right, and center was fine for them, but they hoped their children would live happily ever after with one partner. Four years ago, Sebastian had started playing the field after announcing that he was sick of Madeline. Caroline hadn't said anything about it, but she had always thought Madeline was useless. That, coupled with the fact that she was the matriarch of an affluent family, meant that she wanted an obedient daughter-in-law. She wanted someone who could go for tea and shopping with her and show the other matriarchs how she was in control. Caroline hated women who were ambitious and wanted to focus on their careers. This was especially true since Sebastian had stopped working at Lake Corporation while Madeline seemed to be doing well at Samson Group. Caroline was worried Madeline would hold more power in the relationship, leaving Sebastian at a disadvantage. She was also worried Madeline would be overambitious and dream of taking over the Lake family's assets and finances. And as Sebastian lost interest in Madeline, Caroline started having second thoughts. Madeline knew this very well. She smiled and said, "Why don't we take a stroll somewhere?" Caroline gave her a surprised look. Whenever she wanted Madeline to go anywhere with her, Madeline would always comply. She would behave perfectly and have good manners. Even if Madeline had never taken the initiative to invite Caroline out, Caroline had never picked on her for it. This time, since Madeline had been the one to bring this up, Caroline had no reason to reject her. She changed her clothes and followed Madeline out. Madeline took Caroline to a luxury mall in the city center. There was a ribbon-cutting ceremony there today. One of the brand ambassadors was present. Madeline pointed at Natasha, who stood among the crowd, looking gentle and demure. "That's Natasha." Chapter 8 Caroline frowned at Madeline's words. Madeline smiled and said, "She's pretty innocent, which Sebastian likes. Her father's a doctor, and her mother's a teacher." This was enough to smooth Caroline's frown. She couldn't help asking, "Where do her parents work?" "Her father's the dean of the cardiothoracic department at Southville Hospital, while her mother's a teacher at Southville Private School. Prior to their retirement, her grandfather was an engineer, and her grandmother was a designer." Caroline said, "I suppose that means she was raised properly." "Yeah, and she's pretty nice." Madeline actually wanted to say that someone who willingly chose to be with a man who was already taken couldn't be all good, but she kept this to herself. Caroline stole a few more glances at Natasha. The latter looked elegant and seemed demure. Her eyes were bright, and she looked like the type that everyone liked. It was completely different from Madeline's cool and distant personality. Caroline wasn't surprised that Sebastian liked Natasha. She was almost exactly like Gwen. At that thought, she sighed and patted Madeline on the hand. "I feel bad for you." "There's really nothing to feel bad about. I'm happy that Sebastian's found someone he really likes." Madeline sounded a little choked up. "I really am happy for him." No mother would dislike seeing that another woman was so in love with her son. Now, she genuinely felt bad for Madeline. She looked at Madeline and said, "It's not that I don't like you. It's just that Sebastian should be making his own decisions when it comes to his relationship. "He's always been opinionated, yet he hasn't mentioned anything about getting married despite you two being together for so long. And now, with this young lady … "Once Sebastian actually settles down, I'll make it up to you. I won't let your time with him go to waste." "Thank you, Mrs. Lake." Madeline dropped her tender act. When the ribbon-cutting ceremony was over, Madeline invited Natasha to join her and Caroline at a private restaurant downstairs for lunch. Natasha was obedient, and her gaze was guileless. She was timid when speaking to Caroline and would answer any questions she was asked. Caroline was satisfied, as was Madeline. Later, as Madeline was dropping Caroline off at the Lake residence, they ran into Sebastian at the door. Caroline patted Madeline on the hand. "I told him about you arranging for me to meet Nat. Don't worry. I'm sure he'll remember everything you've done for him." Madeline smiled. After Caroline went inside the house, she and Sebastian stood there without saying anything to each other. Sebastian’s gaze was calm, but he seemed much frostier than he usually was. After a moment, Madeline said, "I'm going to go if there's nothing else." "Stop right there." Sebastian's voice was icy. It made Madeline shudder. She stopped. "Turn around." Madeline did as told. "Do you want to call off the engagement?" His tone was lazy and nonchalant. There was something else in it that Madeline couldn't pinpoint, but it sounded like he would agree in a heartbeat if she were to say she wanted to call things off. "Not yet." "I do, though." The iciness in his tone was apparent. Madeline clenched her fists and pursed her lips. "Gwen called me." Sebastian leaned against the door with one hand tucked in his pocket. He raised an eyebrow coolly, indicating for her to continue. "She wanted me to help her get you." "So?" "You said you liked Natasha more, though." Truth be told, Madeline didn't believe Sebastian's words. For two months after Gwen had left, Sebastian had spent his days drowning his sorrows in drinks. Madeline had been by his side the whole time. Anyway, Natasha was much too similar to Gwen for him to really like her. But since he had uttered those words, Madeline had to use them to her advantage. She said, "We're definitely not getting married, so I want to help you out before we separate." Sebastian interjected, "Cut the crap." Madeline was taken aback. Sebastian continued, "Be straight with me and tell me what you want. Don't act like you have feelings for me. Only a fool would buy that." Chapter 9 Madeline was taken aback. She fell silent. Sebastian said, "Tell me what you want." "Gregory hit me." Sebastian frowned. "What did you say?" He approached Madeline and rolled up her sleeve. There was nothing. Her skin was unblemished. He bent down to lift her skirt. She stopped him. "He used a special whip. It hurts so badly when it lands on you, but you won't see any wounds." Sebastian looked at her. "Go on pretending." Madeline sighed softly. Gregory was adept at keeping up appearances. On the outside, he was gentle and humble to the extent that he seemed almost weak. No one would imagine that he was actually a violent psycho. His son was even worse than him. She said, "I'm telling the truth." "He and your mother have a daughter together, and they seem pretty loving. Outside of the house, he constantly talks about how he treats you like his own flesh and blood, despite you two not being related by blood. "Besides, you're my fiancée now. Why would he hit you? Would your mother even allow that? Or are you telling me that you're incapable of fighting back?" She should have expected this. Madeline said, "I was just joking." Sebastian spat, "You're nuts." He turned to leave, but Madeline grabbed him by the arm to stop him. "Actually, I arranged for your mother to meet Natasha today to end our cold war." Sebastian raised an eyebrow. "Oh?" "Don't be mad at me anymore." "And then?" Madeline cleared her throat. Suddenly, she felt a little embarrassed by the fact that they had known each other for so long. They had met in high school. Despite only being engaged for six years, they had actually known each other for a decade. Sebastian could always tell that she would follow her sentences with something. "Could you not call the engagement off for the time being?" "Why?" Sebastian crossed his arms and gave her a look. "We agreed on this four years ago, Madeline. We would live our separate lives, and you could bring up any conditions you wanted when things came to an end. "I told you I would give you whatever you wanted as long as it didn't involve anything that anyone outside of the Lake family couldn't have. We agreed to have an amicable and clean break. That we wouldn't pester each other." Madeline said, "Because I don't have the energy to deal with my next fiancé at the moment." Sebastian raised an eyebrow. Madeline continued, "I'm 26 years old now. I won't be worth anything if I stay single for a few more years. Once you call off the engagement, Gregory will just pick out the next guy. "Look, seeing as I've been with you for six years, could you just be kind enough to help me out this once? I swear, I'll pave the way for any lover that you want to marry, and I won't affect your relationship with her. I'm not asking for much—give me three to five months." Sebastian's features had become much colder as he had grown up. Rumor had it that he was pretty generous with all his women, even if he didn't have the best temper. Though, he treated Madeline fairly well. He had bought her a car and an apartment, and he had also given her a supplementary card for her to buy anything she wanted. He was considered a generous fiancé. Madeline had a feeling he would agree to her request. Sebastian stared at her for a long time. "You lied about him hitting you so that I would agree, huh?" No, that was the truth. Madeline smiled without saying anything. Sebastian didn't give her a proper answer. All he did was drag her into his car. That night, he touched her like he had been starving for ages. The following day, he pointed at the television and said, "Change this." Madeline's waist was sore. She said sycophantically, "I'll change it right this instant." Sebastian had only seen a few expressions on Madeline's face. Most of the time, she would have a gentle, almost boring smile. Other times, she was expressionless. She was pretty, but she always seemed distant. It wasn't just her expression. Even in her eyes, there was a vague heartlessness. It came from her heart. She was the embodiment of ice. The sycophantic expression she had on now was pretty refreshing. Sebastian chuckled and said imperiously, "Get the biggest one." Madeline made a call and ordered the biggest television available. It took up more than half of the wall. That night, as Sebastian gamed, he frowned and said, "You should have just installed a projector screen or something." Madeline had had enough of this, but she didn't say anything. All she did was hum in agreement. Then, she cooked dinner for him and fed him bit by bit. When she saw how satisfied he looked, she asked in a small voice, "So, is it okay?" "What?" Sebastian gave her a sidelong glance. "Not calling off the engagement yet." Sebastian grunted in agreement. Madeline sighed in relief. That night, when Sebastian crawled onto her bed after sneaking in from the living room, she stopped going along with him. She stopped his hands from roaming over her body and said, "Think about Nat, Prince Sebastian." She actually wanted to mention Gwen, but taking into consideration Sebastian's refusal to admit his feelings for her, she decided to bring Natasha up instead. In truth, Madeline didn't want to upset Sebastian. It was mainly because she had yet to recover from Gregory's whipping, and Sebastian had always been insatiable. Under normal circumstances, she would be fine with anything, but today, she genuinely couldn't handle it. Sebastian pulled away from her with a sneer. "I knew you would kick me to the curb after getting what you wanted." Madeline sat up to argue with him. She said righteously, "Think about it, my lord. If you touch me after touching her—" "I haven't done anything to her." This took Madeline aback. Sebastian continued, "She's not like you. She's conservative enough that she won't let me sleep with her before we're married." "Oh." Sebastian reached out to lift the hem of Madeline's nightgown. She stopped him again. This time, he sounded impatient. "What now?" "Won't you feel guilty for touching me behind her back?" Madeline was asking a serious question. Sometimes, she thought Sebastian was a scumbag. Other times, she thought he wasn't too bad. At the very least, he was a fiancé who was willing to give her whatever she wanted. In this day and age, when everyone set aside their inhibitions to get the things they wanted, she supposed Sebastian could be considered a nice guy. Sebastian said, "Why would I torture myself by suppressing my desires? I have needs. My heart and my body are separate entities. Don't you understand that?" Then, he lifted the hem of Madeline's nightgown. She sighed. Sebastian wasn't anything close to a nice guy. He was a scumbag through and through. If he could say that his heart and body were separate, she wondered how many times he had relieved himself behind her back during the first two years of their engagement. Chapter 10 Sebastian left after spending only two nights at Madeline's apartment, but it was enough to settle Madeline's nerves. She called Rosemary and said, "Tell your husband that nothing's going to happen to our engagement." She hung up immediately after. … A few days later, Caroline called her and asked her to drop by the Lake residence. Madeline drove there. The tension in the house was so thick that a knife could slice right through it. The housekeeper, who had worked for the Lakes for years, even had a handprint on her face. Madeline asked, "What happened?" "Gwen Lynch," Caroline forced through gritted teeth. "She is back." Madeline didn't say anything. She listened as Caroline recounted the sequence of events. Sebastian hadn't said anything about Caroline meeting Natasha for lunch. He had even returned to work at Lake Corporation. It looked like he was ready to settle down. Caroline had been pleased by this, so she had taken some food she had whipped up to the company when she had visited him. Downstairs, outside the building, she had run into Gwen. Caroline had been upset to see her there to pester Sebastian, so she had reprimanded Gwen publicly. Yet Sebastian had come running when he had heard about it, and he had even stood up for Gwen. He had said some nasty things to Caroline. Caroline ended her story, snarling, "She's a vixen. I'm gonna kill her!" Madeline said, "Calm down, Mrs. Lake." "You have to help me think of something, Maddy. How can I drive her away from Sebastian?" "I think you need to go to Natasha for that. She's the one that Sebastian has feelings for now. He even wants to marry her. Sebastian and I will be separating eventually." Caroline's eyes lit up. Madeline continued, "And remember to come to me about these things from now on. We should deal with these things internally." Most of Caroline's friends were gossips. She didn't like outsiders commenting on the Lake family's business, so she thanked Madeline for her reminder. Madeline smiled. "What are you thanking me for? You're Sebastian's mother. I'm always going to wish you the best." Caroline suddenly felt a little guilty over what would happen to Madeline. She patted the latter's hand, saying, "I'm sorry Sebastian's letting you down." This took Madeline aback, but she merely smiled without saying anything. Disappointment and guilt were among the many things that her relationship with Sebastian didn't need. After all, she had known that Sebastian was in love with Gwen from the beginning. There was no way her engagement with him would have ended in marriage. Madeline cheered Caroline up for a while longer before heading home in the evening. … Madeline worked absent-mindedly while listening to Caroline's complaints over the phone. The call had been made in a fit of rage. It seemed that Sebastian's life was in a mess at the moment. He had to deal with Natasha's crying, Caroline's rejection of Gwen, and Gwen's crying simultaneously. His life had gone up in flames, with three people hounding him from all directions. Madeline drew a mindmap. It looked like Gwen would win this time. Though there was no way to tell which woman Sebastian was more in favor of at the moment, he had made an important move yesterday. He had given Natasha an important opportunity. She was now the female lead in a huge production. This was the problem—Sebastian's wife could be anything but a woman who was in the spotlight. Sure enough, a month after they had last seen each other, Sebastian showed up at Madeline's apartment in the middle of the night. He looked irritated. His bad mood was written all over his face. Madeline had yet to hit the sack. She got up from the couch to welcome him. He pulled her to him and kissed her, deepening it until they were close to losing control. Then, he stopped. "Maddy." Madeline was a little aroused by his kiss. Her voice was rather husky as she responded with a hum. "You're really something." His tone was sarcastic. Madeline was taken aback. She wondered whether she had heard him wrong. But before she could ask him about it, she was submerged in the lust and heat he brought out in her. She fell asleep in his arms. The next morning, she got up to prepare breakfast. As they ate, Madeline blinked and asked tentatively, "What was up with you last night?" Sebastian's sarcasm put her on edge. She was afraid he would fall out with her if he knew she had had a hand in this mess. He held out a piece of toast to her. She spread some blueberry jam on it before holding it up to his mouth. He took a bite, then mumbled mockingly, "You only act like a human when you have a guilty conscience." "What?" Madeline didn't hear him clearly. "Gwen and I are back together." Madeline cheered. "Congratulations! Isn't it wonderful getting back together with the person you love?" She wiped her hands with a bright smile and applauded. Sebastian smacked her on the forehead with his spoon. "Eat your breakfast." Madeline looked down at her plate. She fed her eggs to Sebastian. He asked, "So when will our engagement end?" "November, maybe." He looked at her. "Because he'll be back in November?" Madeline didn't hear him because she was drinking her milk. She had a milk mustache when she put her glass down. "What?" He didn't repeat himself. Instead, he wiped her milk mustache away and asked with a smile, "Can we still stay together after the engagement is over?" Duh. Of course not. He was pretty good in bed, but Madeline had long since been disgusted by how dirty he was. Still, she couldn't afford to anger him now, not when there was such a disparity between their statuses. She said seductively, "I'll leave that up to you, Prince Sebastian." … Natasha was out of the game now. She came to Madeline in tears. "Could you help me, please?" Madeline didn't really understand this. "Am I not Sebastian's fiancée? Why does everyone come to me for help?" Natasha blinked at her, looking lost. Madeline mumbled to herself, "Maybe it's because even the biggest of fools can tell that Sebastian doesn't like me and that there's no chance of us marrying." She stopped her muttering there and swiped Natasha's nose. She said amicably, "A substitute will never win out over the real deal, just the way a newcomer will always lose to the old flame. "It's something that's been proven right time and time again. Stop fighting it, honey. You'll never win." Gwen was Sebastian's first love and someone he had never been able to move on from. Otherwise, he wouldn't have turned on his mother for so many years. His behavior was at odds with the playboy image that he had carefully constructed over the years. | LEARN_MORE | https://beokn.com/market/buenovela/3?lpid=9083&utm | 114120811603674 | Love to read | https://facebook.com/100090639010308 | 345 | 0 | 0 | 2024-01-13 02:00 | person_profile | eligible | 0 | 0 | NONE | 0 | 1 | 0 | 1 | Learn More | 0 | Love to read | 120206728479280735 | beokn.com | NONE | dco | https://beokn.com/market/buenovela/3?lpid=9083&utm_campaign={{campaign.name}}&utm_content={{campaign.id}}&adset_name={{adset.name}}&adset_id={{adset.id}}&ad_id={{ad.id}}&ad_name={{ad.name}} | 2024-01-10 03:21 | https://scontent-lga3-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/418434588_768710208636014_5571019927288778995_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_s60x60&_nc_cat=104&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=E1ZY3tYFemoAX_cZW25&_nc_ht=scontent-lga3-2.xx&oh=00_AfCEhHhka3PUVn4eC7O2ANNGmcbj5mEr_MDTU6UV3-MlXQ&oe=65AF8A0E | person_profile | 0 | Love to read | https://scontent-lga3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/418476360_339044245609939_518588372738365348_n.jpg?_nc_cat=108&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=aBg6FKEokqQAX8g5Klj&_nc_ht=scontent-lga3-1.xx&oh=00_AfAtLHnTLHdxVwR1Uh1uL-LCHxV-Vf5ZaeNMLx3jSRt6Rg&oe=65AFA590 | 0 | 3 | Love to read | 0 | 0 | 2024-01-12 02:00 | View Edit Delete | ||||||||||||||||||||
