How you slept with your fiancĂ©e’s best friend for 6 months and she caught you in the act?"
I knew better than to speak so I just hung my head low as he ranted on.
"I hope it was worth it because you lost the best woman you ever had and now you may just lose the company if this gets out and starts a scandal!"
————————
Kayan
I was betrayed by two people I trusted implicitly, my best friend and my fiancé, or so i thought.
Without saying a word, I bent down and picked up my phone. By this time Dimitri had donned his boxers and his slim fit navy dress pants. Mariana on the other hand was gripping the white sheet, trying to cover her body and was sobbing uncontrollably.
Normally her tears would have stirred some sort of emotion but I felt absolutely nothing looking at her.
Dimitri stepped towards me with his outstretched hand but I stepped back, and when I spoke my own voice surprised me.
Two words, " How long?". I stared at both of them expectantly. Dimitri sighed and rubbed his face, looking at me with regret.
When no response was forthcoming from him, I turned to Mariana and pinned her with a glare. " Shut up Mariana! I asked a question and I need an answer now!" I shouted.
She pulled her knees to her chest as her body shook in fear, she had only seen me angry once so she knew not to taunt me. Dimitri on the other hand, was stunned.
She looked at me and stuttered in fear " S....si...six months", and hung her head low. I absorbed her reply, laughed hysterically, which caught both of them by surprise. They looked at each other shrugging their shoulders and just as I started laughing suddenly, I stopped abruptly.
"Six months you say? I guess this is the part where you'll say it was a mistake, you never meant to hurt me and you're both sorry right?." I spoke calmly, surprising myself.
Dimitri was first to speak " Kay, please I'm so sorry. We were both tipsy after your work anniversary party, and after I dropped her off, everything went to terrible. I'm so sorry baby but..." I laughed again, cutting him off mid sentence.
I held my hand up then turned to Mariana" What about you bimbo, any last words?" Her eyes bulged in fear and I watched her squirm in fear. She knew I could put a bullet between her eyes even with my eyes closed , thanks to my Dad taking me to the pistol range every Saturday for 2 years.
She sprung to her knees, the sheet fell exposing her and I saw all the hickeys along her neck and on her breasts. "Kay please, let's talk about this. I'm so sorry and I regret this. I'm so sorry for hurting you like this, it wasn't planned."
The nerve of this woman, I thought. I should have listened to my gut all those months ago. She kept thwarting our plans, started traveling a lot and would barely take my video calls then. And she kept changing or bashing my wedding plans and like a fool, I brushed it aside.
Dimitri was the same, one business trip after another, late nights and then he was distant. When I asked him about it, he promised to do better than what he did, but there was a subtle change. We no longer have sleep.
Both of them looked at me expectantly, waiting for the weak, docile Kayan to shed tears and assure them everything would be okay.
I dropped my phone into my bag, grabbed my pistol and clicked the safety off. I swiftly fired two rounds which were followed by agonizing screams. I shot Dimitri in his thigh just inches from his shaft while Mariana got hers in her right shoulder. Just enough to cause pain but not be fatal.
I walked out the room but turned to them saying " That's for the betrayal, I never want to see or hear from either of you again. The next time you won't be so lucky."
I descended the stairs shakily, I touched my face checking for tears but there were none. My chest was convulsing but I refused to give in to the pain I was feeling.
As I got to the last step, I looked around, marched over to the fireplace and threw all photos she had of us together into it. I lifted the stoker, broke her 60" Samsung TV and everything went red from thereon. I trashed her apartment then walked out as if nothing happened.
I grabbed my baseball bat from my trunk, smashed all her windows and doors. Just as I about to leave, I saw Dimitri's Silver Range Rover across the street.
How didn't I notice it before?
I walked up to it and repeated my actions. When I was satisfied, I hopped into my van and drove away.
----
Dimitri
I couldn't believe Kayan shot us and simply walked away. I had known her for over 6 years but I never encountered this side of her. I knew I deserved that, worst of all, I ruined the one good thing I had done.
I was thinking with my shaft and not my brain, because in assessing the current situation, Mariana was just a good woman. There is attraction, but the feelings I have for Kayan are deeper.
Her sobs reverberated around the bedroom , bringing me back to the current situation.
When Kayan left the room, I heard her trashing Mariana's apartment downstairs and was about to go after her.
Mariana's words stopped me dead in my tracks, "Leave her be, Dimitri, she will kill you! She needs to calm down first before we approach her." I turned to her slowly, trying to ignore the pain and blood gushing from my wound.
"What do you mean Mari? I'm going after her! There is no us. This was a mistake. I need to talk to her!" I ran my hands over my face then slid my belt around my leg making a tourniquet.
She slid off the bed, gripping the sheet with her uninjured shoulder. " Take it from me, we're lucky to be alive! You have never seen her upset or know what she's capable of in this state but I do!" She tiptoed to the door listening for any further sound from downstairs, but was greeted with silence.
Mariana sat on the stairs shaking and crying while gripping her disheveled hair.
The front door was ajar, I moved to lock it but the sight of Mariana's car took my breath away. I looked across the street to mine and it looked even worst.
I shook my head, sighed and turned too quickly, causing a searing pain in the bullet wound.
I called my driver Michael and told him to be quick and discreet.
Mariana got dressed in the meantime while we waited with bated breaths.
Michael arrived in about 10 minutes, his eyes expressed shock but he knew better than to ask any questions.
He drove us to Wyckoff Medical, the only place I knew would be discreet about what happened.
Using the back entrance, we were quickly ushered into separate rooms for assessment.
As I laid on the bed, I felt Dr. Green prodding my wound for the bullet. He's been our family physician since I was a child, so when he asked who I pissed off this time , I sighed and ignored him.
All I could think about was Kayan, she was my everything!
Not anymore you prick, you screwed up and you're lucky to be alive, I shook my head, trying to shake guilt ridden thoughts from my subconscious.
I reminisced on all the times we spent together, the plans we made for our future and our kids. I reflected on how she supported me even when my own father doubted me. She never gave up on me. You shut up Dimitri!
Dr. Green waved his hand above my eyes while calling my name. " Did you hear anything I said just now?" he asked quietly.
I sighed " No, what is it?". My tone was clipped but right now I didn't care, I could apologize later.
He rolled his eyes before continuing "I said there's a detective waiting outside to talk to you, you know it's my duty to report this." He grabbed a scissors and cut the thread, signaling that he had finished stitching my wound.
"You'll live, but stay off your feet for a few days, and use a crutch if you have to move around." Dr. Green bandaged my leg and was about to leave when I stopped him.
"Wait, I apologize for my behavior Doc. Where's the young lady who came in with me? I need to see her now." He looked at me sadly, shook his head and left the room without a word.
My guess is he figured out why Kayan hadn't rushed into the hospital demanding answers. The realization hit me of how I not only disappointed Kayan but everyone close to me, especially my parents.
I must have dosed off from the pain medication I had gotten as I was woken up by Mariana gently shaking my shoulder and calling my name.
Blinking my eyes to adjust to the bright lights, I grabbed the remote and adjusted my bed. Mariana looked terrible, her hair was unkempt and her eyes were swollen. Her right arm was bandaged and now in a sling.
She sat in the chair beside the bed and hung her head low. " I spoke to the police, I told them we were mugged at the apartment as we were trying to finalize wedding arrangements." It was barely a whisper, but I sighed in relief.
"We messed up but I agree, I'll tell them the same thing. Kayan doesn't deserve this." My throat felt hoarse so I reached for a tumbler with water, poured a cup and took several sips.
" I told you we needed to stop Dimitri but you insisted on coming over!" I pinned her with a glare which caused her to shut up immediately.
The nerve of this woman! I laughed coldly before turning to her " Oh so now it's my fault Mar? Surely you weren't complaining when I rammed your wet dripping private part with my shaft right? You never said stop! Anything else I'm forgetting?" My chest was heaving by the time I finished ranting.
I was about to continue but her sobs erupted. She looked at me lost, guilt etched across her face before she stood to leave.
"Look Mar, I'm sorry okay. I just don't know what to do." I held her wrist, my thumb caressing the inside of her hand in a comforting way. "How did she get in though?"
Mariana was trembling as tears streamed down her face. She took a deep breath before she spoke. "I forgot she had a key from over a year ago. She would always check the place when I traveled for a convention or went to see my family."
My mouth opened to speak but no words were forthcoming and they never came as the door banged open, slamming into the wall denting it.
Jumping with fright, we turned to see my very pissed off father and my distraught mother. Before I could utter a word, he spoke," You, get out now and don't let me see your face again!" Mariana jumped in fear and ran from the room sobbing before I could stop her.
"Dad i can explain...." He slammed his hand onto the small table, knocking the tumbler over.
My mom grabbed his arm, trying to calm him down but he flicked her hand away and grabbed my hospital gown roughly, "Explain what exactly Dimitri? How you slept with your fiancĂ©e’s best friend for 6 months and she caught you in the act?"
I knew better than to speak so I just hung my head low as he ranted on.
"I hope it was worth it because you lost the best woman you ever had and now you may just lose the company if this gets out and starts a scandal!"
"I'm going to fix this Dad, just give me a chance please." I turned towards my mom seeking support but she turned her head away from me. " Mom, please I'm sorry, I'll fix this. I'm gonna make everything right."
My Dad simply scoffed at my words, took my Mom's hands and walked out the door.
The only sound that filled the room was that of the water droplets bouncing on the floor.
----
Mariana
I have never been more regretful in my entire life. My head was throbbing non stop, my eyes were puffy from all the tears I'd shed in the past 24 hours. My mind replayed the events and all I could think of, was that I should be dead by Kayan's hands.
My driver dropped me off to the apartment, and as I stepped inside I once again surveyed the damage. Nothing was left untouched, I had to start over but I guess that's the price to pay for stabbing your best friend in the back for six months.
I wanted to stop so many times, I knew it was wrong but Dimitri was like a spirit I couldn't get enough of.
We decided to take the secret to our graves and everything was going great until I saw him a week later at Danny's Cafe. We sat and talked for a while but after an hour when we attempted to leave, the sexual tension was just too much to ignore.
From thereon, we used our lunch breaks and any free time we could muster to screw each other senseless. After each encounter, we'd say it was the last time , but that never happened as soon after I took trips when he did or he came to my apartment before going home.
All this time, I gave Kayan a million excuses as to why we couldn't meet up, continued planning her wedding virtually and offered excuses when she whined about Dimitri being overly consumed by work.
I even ended things with my own boyfriend as our relationship became strained and miserable because of my infidelity.
Now this is the endgame, I lost my best friend who always stood by me and I'm pretty sure Dimitri and I have no future.
Sitting on the stairs, I decided to take a leap of faith and call Kayan. If I could just get her to listen to me for a second, I would tell her how sorry I am and try to fix things.
As I dialed her number, it went directly to voice-mail, and after trying a few more times unsuccessfully, I decided to go see her. I ordered an Uber, waiting outside for a few minutes before the car pulled up.
I got in, gave the driver her address and stared blankly out the window. The only sounds were that of the music playing in the dashboard.
Ten minutes later, I was standing on the curb outside Kayan's townhouse. Hesitantly, I opened the gate, trudged up the steps and rang the bell. I was there waiting for a few minutes, I called her but there was no response.
I walked to the garden by the lamp post where she always hid a spare key. It was gone.
Just as I was about to step from the yard, I was stopped in my tracks by a faint voice. My hopes increased but when I turned around expecting Kayan, no one was there.
What was that then, I thought to myself.
I reopened the Uber app, placed my request and waited by the curb.
"She's not here you know." I was startled by the voice and was relieved to see her neighbor Michael.
"What do you mean? Where is she?" I asked hurriedly.
He eyed me suspiciously before replying,
"Seeing you here looking like poop tells me you had a role in Kay's sudden departure 2 hours ago." His words were true yet hurtful, I castedmy eyes down in shame.
"You don't know, Mike, just tell me where she went, I need to talk to her before it's too late" I begged him.
The prick was nonchalant as he leant against her gate typing away on his phone. After getting a ping, indicating a message, he looked up at me smirking.
"Well if you must know, my girl left for England indefinitely..." he paused, struggling to hold back a snicker, "...Oh and she says you should go yourself or Dimatro, whatever the pretty boy's name is." Michael was now clutching his side laughing hysterically while I sighed in defeat.
She's gone! And now there's no way I will find her because I can't go to her family and I'm pretty sure she's already changed her number!
I didn't warrant Michael a response since the Uber pulled up, I hopped in and left.
My phone began vibrating in my pocket and I grabbed it quickly, just hoping it would be Kayan. I was disappointed as Dimitri's name flashed on the screen.
"What do you want Dimitri? Haven't we done enough, didn't you hear what your father said?" I shouted angrily, catching sight of the driver's raised brows in the rear view mirror.
"Calm down Mari, I wanted to apologize for my Dad. I'm getting discharged now so I'm heading home, I need to sort things out with Kay." Though I had wanted the same thing minutes ago, I couldn't help the pang of jealousy that gripped me.
Before I could stop myself I snarled in response
"Thanks for asking how I'm doing you prick! Oh and don't bother going there because she's gone!"
"What are you talking about Mari! This is not the time to joke with me..." I'd had enough of his nonsense so I cut him mid sentence " Kay's gone Dimitri, I just left the house, she's not home and her neighbor says she left for England." The other end of the line was silent.
I looked at the screen to see if the call had been disconnected but the line was still open.
"Dimitri?" He sighed in response and I heard him grunt in pain, perhaps moving too quickly on his injured leg.
"I'm here Mari. How will I fix things if I don't know where to find her? Of all the places, she had to chose England!? Couldn't she have just gone to her parents? What am I going to do now?"
I wanted to speak but my throat felt as if it was clogged.
I cut the call, switched to airplane mode and rested my head against the window as fresh salty tears rolled down my cheeks.
I lost everything.
My best friend. Dimitri . And a family who accepted me without judgement and showed me nothing but love all these years. What matters is that I’m here to help." Charles tapped his cufflink, his gaze steady and serene as he watched Noelle.
He was her guardian angel in her darkest hour. "Marry me. I'll bring you unimaginable happiness!"
————————

Autumn had painted Brookville in shades of gold and crimson when Noelle Shaw stepped off the plane. She grabbed her suitcase and walked out into the crisp air, a familiar sense of home wrapping around her.
A whole year had passed since she left to pursue a corporate training program overseas, and now, she was back just in time.
Her third anniversary with her boyfriend Xavier Harris was just days away, and she had been working nonstop to make it back early enough to surprise him.
She hailed a cab and headed straight for Xavier's office. The moment she walked through the front doors, Alice, the receptionist, gave her a look of total shock. "Ms. Shaw? You’re back? Are you here for the CEO's engagement party?"
Noelle's brow creased in confusion. "The CEO's engagement party? What are you talking about, Alice?"
"It's Mr. Harris's engagement party with your sister!"
"What?" Noelle's heart skipped a beat, and the happiness drained from her face. "Whose engagement party?"
Alice seemed to realize she had dropped a bombshell and nervously swallowed. "The CEO... and your sister..."
"Where is it happening?"
"The... Golden Oasis Hotel."
It felt like a punch to the gut. Noelle spun on her heel and rushed out. "Driver, take me to the Golden Oasis Hotel, please."
She had not even made it inside the hotel when she saw a huge photo by the entrance. There Xavier was with his arm around Winter Shaw, who looked stunning in her elegant dress. They were gazing into each other's eyes, lost in a world of love.
On her way over, Noelle was psyching herself up. Xavier was her boyfriend. He was hers! The idea of him getting engaged to her sister was just too bizarre. As she arrived, however, reality hit her like a ton of bricks.
She walked in just in time to catch Xavier whispering sweet nothings into Winter's ear, making her cheeks turn a rosy pink.
Noelle felt a surge of anger, her eyes blazing with fury.
How ludicrous it was. Her boyfriend of three years, the one she had been with through thick and thin, was now cozying up to her elder sister while she had been miles away.
Winter Shaw was mingling and toasting with the guests arm in arm with Xavier when she spotted Noelle. Her face drained of color, and her grip on Xavier's hand tightened without her even realizing it.
Xavier's eyes met Noelle's. He paused for a split second, then flashed Winter a comforting smile before walking over to Noelle. "Hey Noelle, did you come to celebrate me and your sister's big day?"
His voice, which was usually so warm and gentle, felt like a knife twisting in her heart. Noelle clenched her jaw. "Celebrate? Celebrate you stabbing me in the back? And Winter, really? Are you that desperate for a man? You knew he was mine, and you... you both..."
Before she could finish, a slap snapped her head to the side, leaving her cheek throbbing.
Holding her face, tears brimming in her eyes, she looked up in disbelief. "Mom!"
"Don't you dare call me 'mom' right now! What kind of daughter or sister acts the way you're acting? It's your sister's engagement, and you can't even be happy for her? Instead, you show up here to make a scene. You're doing this on purpose, aren't you?" Jade Jones was fuming, her eyes shooting daggers at Noelle.
Noelle's heart clenched. "Mom, what are you even saying? Xavier's my boyfriend."
"Your boyfriend? Xavier is your sister's husband. Why do you have to challenge your sister for everything? I’m so disappointed in you."
Noelle could not help but laugh. She stared at her mother, Jade, who had the nerve to twist the truth so blatantly. She turned to Xavier. "Xavier, come on. Tell us who you're really dating."
His brow creased, his gaze on Noelle filled with uncertainty. The firm grip he felt, however, brought him back to the moment. "Noelle, I'm sorry, but there's only ever been one person for me, and that's your sister."
Noelle's heart felt like it was being sliced open as she listened to Xavier's emotionless confession.
What a joke! What bitter irony!
"Xavier, you’d better get this straight: it's me who's dumping you, not the other way round." It took all her willpower not to lash out at the cheating couple. "I hope you two have a long, 'happy' life together," she spat.

Noelle bolted from the hotel, her previously defiant face now streaked with tears.
Out of nowhere, a black Cayenne screeched to a halt, its tires screaming against the pavement. Caught off guard, she tumbled to the ground.
The driver gulped, his eyes darting to the man in the back seat, "Sir... Sir?"
The man in the back, unfazed by the nearby accident, merely glanced at the passenger seat beside him. "Ronald, go see what happened."
"Right away, sir." Ronald was out of the car in a flash, checking the front for any damage.
About six feet ahead of the car, a woman sat on the ground with her eyes wide open, looking totally freaked out. Her cheeks were streaked with tears, and she had obviously been crying. "Miss? Are you okay? Do you need a ride to the hospital?"
Noelle was scared out of her wits. She just gazed at Ronald, lost in shock, until she finally managed to pull herself together and stand up. Without a word, she tried to sidestep him, eager to get away.
Ronald was puzzled by her reaction. "Are you sure you're alright? Do you need any..."
"I... I'm fine, really, I'm okay." Noelle's eyes darted to the black Cayenne. She could not shake off the feeling that someone was watching her, and it sent shivers down her spine. She scowled, hating the feeling, and hobbled away as fast as she could.
Ronald watched her go, confused. He wanted to stop her, but she was dodging him like he was bad news, leaving him speechless.
Back in the car, Ronald noticed the man in the backseat craning his neck to watch the woman through the window. "Sir, we're at the hotel. Do you want to head straight in, or would you like to get out here?"
The man, Charles Hoffman, did not say a word, and Ronald did not dare to make a move.
Watching the petite figure disappear into the distance, Charles let out a slight smirk and tapped his finger against his knee in a steady beat. "Let's head back!"
Ronald was taken aback. "But sir, isn't today..."
Before he could finish, Charles cut him off with a piercing look. "The show's over. There's nothing left to see," Charles said, his words heavy with implication. "Ronald, you seem to be losing your touch."
The Majestic Lounge was Brookville's hotspot, its lights blazing and music pumping every night. Noelle's friend, Rowena Smith, always said it was the prime spot for a wild time after dark.
Noelle was not one for these scenes, but tonight, she was hunched over the bar, downing drinks as if there was no tomorrow. She peered at the sea of unfamiliar faces swirling around her through half-closed eyes.
"Hey there. Did you come here alone?"
A hand clamped onto Noelle's shoulder, the stranger's touch lingering a bit too long. Noelle jerked away, revulsion coursing through her. "Back off."
The guy shot a knowing look at his buddy and smirked at Noelle. "Feisty, aren't you? Back off? Ladies like you just play hard to get, secretly hoping for some attention."
He moved in as if to plant a buss on her, but Noelle shoved him back and stood up, her stance unsteady and her heart racing. She shook her head, trying to clear the fog. "I said back off! Is that so hard to understand?"
She stumbled, nearly toppling over, but the man caught her, his arm snaking around her waist. "See, you’re saying no, but your body's telling a different story."

Trapped in the man's grip, Noelle struggled to break free, her body refusing to cooperate. Her vision was blurry as she glared at him. "What are you trying to do?"
"Just having a bit of fun..." He chuckled, his voice dripping with sleaze as he steadied her. "Let's go somewhere more entertaining, shall we?"
Noelle might have been out of it, but she could still sense the danger in the man's tone. However, her whole body ached, and she knew she was no match for them. She scanned the area for anyone who could help her, but she was invisible to the passersby.
She spotted a figure approaching through her haze. Acting instinctively, she shoved the two men aside and bolted, slamming right into the newcomer. "Save me!" she gasped.
Her fingers dug into the fabric of the man's shirt, and she inhaled a sharp, clean scent. "Please, save me," she pleaded.
Charles squinted, taking in the woman who had just collided with him. There was a flicker of something sharp in his gaze.
Noelle did not let go, pressing herself against him. Her lips, tainted with the strong smell of booze, were inches from his face, and her cheeks were unnaturally rosy.
"Sir..." Ronald, who was standing a few steps back, watched in disbelief. She had the nerve to approach Charles, yet he was not pushing her away?
Charles shot a cold look at the two men harassing Noelle. "Time to leave, don't you think?"
"You
Who do you think you are? Do you even know who I am? I had my eye on that girl," one of the men blurted out.
Charles smirked and let out a soft laugh. "You laid a hand on her? Which hand was it? Show me!"
The courage of the other man drained away when he met Charles's icy stare. "Uh... Mr. Hoffman, we didn't realize who you were. We... we haven't touched her, not at all," he stammered, realizing they were in deep trouble.
"Ronald," Charles shot him a look before scooping Noelle into his arms like she was the heroine in some epic romance, “give these guys a lesson they won't forget. Make it clear that The Majestic Lounge isn't for scum like them."
With Noelle in his arms, Charles spun on his heel and left. Ronald gave a curt nod. "Understood." A sly grin spread across his face as he faced the two troublemakers. "So, which one of you was it that touched the lady?"
The two guys exchanged panicked glances, too scared to utter a word. Ronald let out a mocking scoff. "What, did both of you touch her? Mr. Hoffman wants to let you keep a little bit of your offending hand as a souvenir."
They dropped to their knees with a thud, as pale as ghosts, begging, "Please, have mercy! You can't do this. My dad is a big shot at Evergreen Group..."
Meanwhile, Charles, with Noelle in his arms, was like a walking iceberg.
Noelle felt she was being drained of blood and eaten alive by a swarm of ants. She whimpered, overcome by a wave of dizziness, "It's so hot..."
Charles glanced down at his shirt, which was now a mess thanks to Noelle, and his gaze frosted over. He held her tighter and picked up the pace to the elevator.
Though she was barely conscious, she caught a glimpse of the man's strong profile. The chill from his body was oddly soothing, and she snuggled closer without thinking. Charles's eyes darkened just as the elevator doors slid open, and he stepped out into the unknown.

At the top of The Majestic Lounge was a room that belonged to Charles alone. He swung the door open and carried Noelle in. She was feeling so awful that she hung onto Charles like she was trying to meld into him, her limbs all over the place with nary a hint of elegance.
He managed to detach Noelle from himself with a bit of a struggle and gently placed her in the bathroom. Taking a deep breath, he dialed Ronald’s number. "I need ice, and make it quick."
Once he ended the call, he saw Noelle trying to get out of the tub. He gently but firmly pushed her back down and turned on the cold tap. "Stay still!"
His voice was firm and grew even more intense as he noticed how the water in the tub accentuated her figure. His gaze sharpened.
Ronald was fast, arriving shortly with two buckets of ice. "Here's the ice, sir."
"Hold on," Charles instructed Ronald. "Just set them down and leave, thanks." His tone was cool and detached.
Ronald raised an eyebrow at Charles's unusual sternness. However, he kept his thoughts to himself and left as told.
Once alone, Charles brought the ice buckets into the bathroom.
Noelle was submerged in the icy water, her body shaking uncontrollably. Her mind was still foggy, and Charles's expression was grim.
Noelle was burning up inside, feeling like she was on the brink of collapse. The icy water was a harsh contrast to that, enveloping her in a torturous chill. She squirmed in agony, but Charles's hands kept her steady, and his voice cut through the haze. "Hang in there. It'll pass soon."
...
Noelle's eyes fluttered open, her body feeling sore and like it had forgotten how to function. She lay still, gazing up at the stark white ceiling. As the fog in her brain slowly lifted, the memories of last night started to play like a movie in her head.
Her face drained of color as panic flickered across her features. She flung off the covers and was relieved to find herself in pajamas, untouched. Still, that aching... where did it come from?
"You're awake?" A chilly voice cut through the silence, and Noelle's head whipped toward the door. There she saw a man clad in cool elegance and fancy threads who was obviously not your average Joe. His face was so drop-dead gorgeous that even a beauty queen would swoon at him.
Noelle's brow creased in confusion. She did not know this man. As the reality of her situation hit her, she blurted out, "Who are you?" Her voice sounded so harsh and grating that it scared her. The words came out as a dry, quacking mess.
Charles arched an eyebrow, not bothering with an answer. He strolled over, poured her a glass of water, and handed it to her with smooth and elegant hands.
Noelle was taken aback for a second but then grabbed the glass, downing the water with an eagerness that bordered on uncouth. Once the glass was empty, she eyed Charles suspiciously. "Are you the one who rescued me?"
He did not say yes or no, but Noelle let out a relieved breath. "Okay. Thanks for whatever you did last night." She glanced down at her clothes, a silent question hanging in the air, and her expression turned to one of confusion. However, her gratitude remained evident despite the puzzlement.
Charles's gaze landed softly on Noelle's face, his mind replaying her stunning presence from the night before and stirring something within him. "It’s all good, Ms. Shaw. Don’t worry about it," he said, sidestepping the potential embarrassment with a smooth deflection.
Noelle bit her lip, fighting the urge to say more. She would have to deal with the fallout and act like this whole mess never happened. Then, it hit her. "How did you find out my last name is Shaw?"
"Surprised? There's been a lot of buzz about a Ms. Shaw today. Have you not heard?" Charles said, casually fiddling with his cufflinks, looking the picture of cool.
Noelle's face drained of color. "What... What are you talking about?"
"There are many versions of your story. Which one do you want to hear?"
"Who are you, really? And what do you want from me?" LEARN_MORE https://c.read4funs.com/ad/aXJvbWFuY2UvMTcxMjc4LzI 193365490526262 ForFun-120 https://facebook.com/61554751622817 74 1 976,895,380,497,702 2024-05-08 02:00 person_profile eligible 0 0 NONE 0 0 1 0 Learn more 0 ForFun-120 120210837642080664 c.read4funs.com NONE video https://c.read4funs.com/ad/aXJvbWFuY2UvMTcxMjc4LzIwMjQwNTA3MTYwOTQ2L3BhZ2U=?adid={{ad.id}} 2024-05-07 03:23 https://scontent-iad3-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/440938667_3259280384379238_8340819269311255227_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_s60x60&_nc_cat=109&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=NiE2Efc5XvsQ7kNvgHbmeVZ&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-2.xx&oh=00_AfDBQlwSiK6mxGi1I6cquOM4IR8kYzj5ri5-3MBF-IsASA&oe=6641C337 person_profile 0 ForFun-120 https://scontent-iad3-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/441022509_458274453266305_7322101295596002587_n.jpg?_nc_cat=111&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=TmPg9TJKyy8Q7kNvgGS4tyt&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-2.xx&oh=00_AfDt19aJEp82euN8c_rTos43p6ZLnmUfUc-3okbS62cXeA&oe=6641F513 0 3 ForFun-120 0 0 2024-05-08 02:00 View Edit

Yes 2024-05-08 18:34 active 760 0 455821593520804 đŸ”„đŸ”„ Click to Read đŸ‘‰đŸ»đŸ‘‰đŸ» My husband had been having an affair with his assistant. I could hear the sounds of moans pouring from our bedroom before I opened the door.
When I heard the wailing moans of my soon to be ex husband's "secretary" I walked my undressed hip directly to them.
I took a deep breath clearing the visual of them having intercourse from my head. Oh, I had grand plans for these two adulterers.
I opened the door, walking in and pausing to watch them.
I walked right past both of their startled figures, to my dresser where my phone was with a smirk. "Hey guys, smile for the camera!"
I turned on my camera, snapping pictures of them on the bed still frozen, both staring at me in shock.
"Nice. Please forgive the intrusion, I'll be on my way in just a sec."
————————
Vivian
I took a deep breath compose myself as the my introduction to the crowd began. My heart felt as if it was in my throat right now. It felt like the weight of the world was centered on my shoulders.
If I was successful, not only would it launch my modeling career at age 28, but I would increase funding for this campaign.
Since majority of the crowd outside of these curtains did not have my skin tone, I had to impress them.
Today is the beginning of a campaign launching models with brown skin into the dominantly pale skinned model industry. I will be the face of the campaign and in order to be successful, I must make these rich people want to fund this campaign.
And I will succeed.
There has never been a fashion show like this, where I haven't had my hair straightened, my make up has not been contoured on my face to match those around me, and I am not walking fiercely down the walkway as if I'm walking on fire.
I had always been confident in myself as a black woman yet I still found myself getting stage fright before my shows. Even more so with the bold campaign I was now launching.
And after many failed seductive attempts with my husband lately, I wasn't sure if I could seduce the crowd before me.
Instead I am to walk slowly, very seductively. My natural kinky curls framed my face, I have little to no make up on so that I appear soft as I am, completely naturally.
The curtains are pulled back and as I began my walk down the aisle, it is not hard at all to seduce the crowd.
I capture everybody's attention and when I pass them, the from the corner of my eye, I can see the effect I have on them and I couldn't help how it boosted my confidence.
My walk is so natural and graceful that I practically glide down the run way. The bronze light is soft and makes my brown skin glow in the dark like highlight. The sway of my hips is mesmerizing to the crowd, so I pause and I turn slowly looking at all the faces to give them my best seductive smile.
Many have lost their composure, becoming flustered by my attention. I hold my smirk, this is my crowd now.
I almost falter when I see that my husband is not among the crowd. Once upon a time, he was always the first face that I graced with my smiles. He had never missed one of my shows in the beginning, looking up at me just as entranced as the rest of the crowd.
I can feel my eyes watering so I quickly look away from them and continue making my way down the runway.
When I finish with the crowd, I walk back up the runway and into the darkness hiding me from the crowd as they all cheer. In the darkness I hold my face, I can't help the excitement that overcomes me. I did it!
My husband had promised to be here today. If he wasn't behind stage with the rest of my crew then I didn't know what this would mean for our marriage. I could worry about all that tomorrow though.
Tonight, I fuccccckkking owned that crowd and I was sure going to celebrate my success on my birthday.
I let out the breath that I had been holding and recompose myself then I walk behind stage to the small group gathered for me. I grin victoriously, strutting up to them saucily.
"You did it, Vi! They all looked like they wanted to eat you up." My best friend and manager Naomi screams running up to me to hug me while all my co-workers clap and shout congrats. "How about some birthday cake before the next show?"
I give Naomi the biggest hug and nod.
"What's wrong girl?" She asks noticing something is wrong right away.
I want to be happy but I have this really terrible feeling in my chest. I hug her back trying not to smile awkwardly as I ask her if my husband Richard made an appearance tonight.
"No, I didn't see him? Was he supposed to be here?" She asked.
"Yes." I replied. I could see the look of pity on her face as she shook her head, it had been about 4 years since he had been to one of my modeling gigs. And what type of message did that send? He was my husband and should've been here to support me.
Part of me isn't really surprised, I knew when I refused to quit modeling and depend fully on Richard financially that our marriage would change.
But this job is what helped get his business up and running when we graduated college with no immediate careers in sight. So I decided to keep modeling even after Richard became financially stable, despite it not being anything closely related to what I'd majored in.
Naomi attempts to cheer me up with the double chocolate layer cake she baked me for my birthday and I grin at her trying my best not to let my intuition eat away at my happiness, nobody wanted an unhappy campaign model right?
I finally manage to escape Naomi and her devil addicting double chocolate cake, making my way out front to the crowd to make my appearances and answer questions for those who had attended the opening show before the next show started.
Afterwards when it was time for the second show, I made my way backstage to my booth to check my phone for any messages from Richard. He was a very successful business man that had recently become the owner of the company he had worked for, thanks to me, why shouldn't he take days off to support my career? Why else was his secretary always around for then?
The bad feeling in my chest only increase at that point, and I recognized it as my intuition. Something was up and I was so angry that I seemed like the only one who wanted our marriage so I was gonna confront Richard about it. After not locating my phone, I realized that I had left my phone at home and since this was the second show I could afford to leave. I was only required to show my face at the after party that started in 6 hours and I would be back by then.
I grabbed my bag and dipped before anyone noticed, sneaking another slice of Naomi's cake as I went.
When I finally made it home I sat in the car for a moment smashing on the piece of cake because Richard hated when I ate sweets. It was my birthday, I deserved to smash my face in it!
When I finished, I walked into the house instantly noticing the clothing littered the floor. There were female clothing scattered among the trail that led upstairs. A sickening feeling overcame me at that moment but I forced the cake that had suddenly came up back down, following the trail of clothing up the stairs to my bedroom door slowly, quietly.
I could hear the sounds of moans and groans pouring from our bedroom.
My husband had grown bold, it seemed. Obviously he had no respect for me if he passed up one of the most successful campaign launches for my career to bring a bimbo to our house to have an affair.
I almost turned to leave, wanting to just walk away with my heart partially intact but I knew I had to see this. I tried to mentally prepare myself for this. I wanted to know who the bimbo was.
To bring a woman to our home and have intercourse with her in our bed on my birthday? He was so disrespectful and just asking to be caught. As I stepped closer to the door, I could hear her telling him how much she loved him through the door.
He responded, telling her that he loved her too. I closed my eyes counting to ten and gathering what remained of my resolve.
I can do this, I thought. I must see this.
I forced myself to open the door, my eyes widening as I saw them in the act up close and personal.
I realized that he had been having an affair with his assistant, Emily. The sad part is that this did not appear to be just a regular experience. They were making love and the familiarity of it told me that it had been happening for quite a while. I couldn't have prepared myself for the pain that I felt slicing through my heart in a thousand years.
My soul was in agony, this was not something that the mind couldn't rationalize for the sake of saving my heart from breaking into pieces. It had been in my face all along and I had been blind to it because we had started attending marriage counseling together. What a joke the marriage counselling must have been to both of them.
My marriage was over. And that one thought kept repeating inside my head like a broken record.
It's over.
I dropped my bag at the door, turning to run away from the sight of them. I couldn't take the pain of watching them anymore. My marriage to Richard had meant everything to me, we had been married 10 years.
I managed to hold my sobs as I ran outside of my home, past my car, and down the streets of our beautiful neighborhood. I just let myself run freely, trying to run myself to exertion to exchange the pain from my heart to the pain in my legs. My silk dress had ripped all up my thighs exposing my lace panties, too delicate for the strain that my pumping legs made. I did not care at all, not pausing to cover myself or look if anybody was looking at me.
When I finally stopped to catch my breath and look around I was just at the local park 10 minutes away from my home. I finally let my sobs out, breaking down completely as I saw that the park was empty.
Richard had been my high-school best friend turned sweetheart after prom, when I gave him my first time. I had always loved him, just fell in love our senior year. I had wanted to have children with him and grow old with him, I did everything right to keep him happy. I had never looked back and regretted anything until now. I knew that we were never supposed to be more than friends but I still married him after high-school because he had been the only guy I wanted to be with.
Richard had cheated once before in college but that was just a one time at a party. He hadn't came back to our dorm that night and that next morning, I had just knew. I forgave him since we were still basically kids in college, told him he was still who I wanted and that I wouldn't dream of sleeping with another man. But still once a cheater, always a cheater.
He destroyed me..
Everything else I could deal with. Marriage was about forgiveness and making sacrifices, right? But sharing intimacy with another? That was the worst type of betrayal. I couldn't stay with him after this. I couldn't forgive him for this, but I was too weak to walk away. Love didn't just fade away, the hurt was still there stabbing me in my chest. I wanted him to hurt, I knew that he loved me. I was the real mastermind behind his company. He couldn't afford to lose me.
But I had nothing left to give. I had put everything including my soul into my marriage, only for it to shatter before my eyes. I couldn't stand another thought of being on this Earth without him after this, either.
He was my only best friend after all.
How would I end it?
My LIFE.
How would I commit suicide?
Pills? Hanging? Knife? Bridge?
I could have a peaceful death. I would drown myself, let the water end the anguish that brewed inside my heart. And when they found my body, he would know.
He did this. He lost me, forever.
---
Vivian
Silence makes many people very uncomfortable. It's non existence is deafening, it can be insistent and unable to escape. People cannot stand the thought of being alone in silence. People crave interaction with people, they crave attention.
I, however, craved intimacy. And I was not just talking about intercourse.
Intimacy wasn't about who could touch my body, it was about who could touch my soul.
Intimacy was the purest form of connection, something I lacked in my marriage.
Now I wished that I could capture that silence for myself. I wanted to bottle that silence, preserve it just for me so that I could release it every time my thoughts overwhelmed my head.
I studied the ripples that my legs made in the pond.
Beautiful, I thought, tilting my head up to look up into the dark sky. I closed my eyes, if I waited any longer I would lose my nerve. I sucked in my breath, desperately trying to taste the sweetness of summer one last time but it was too late. I tasted bitterness on my tongue and I felt it engulfing me, tainting the taste that I had wanted to savor. I gasped, inhaling fresh air, despair filled me at the thought that I would leave this world with my soul not at peace. I forced myself to believe that I could taste the final sweet taste of summer and it subdued my mind as I gently stretched my legs side to side before sliding into the water allowing the water to close over my face without panicking.
The water was colder as I floated underneath it. My dress seems tighter, constricting my gentle movements so I removed it, ripping it off my body before I really started to panic.
Peaceful. Peaceful. Peaceful. I chanted inside my head, all I wanted was to die peacefully. Something inside me won't allow that though, something rebels. I am rebelling.
I've never been a coward, why should I start now?
Because it hurts...
Suddenly loud ringing starts in my ears and I gasp stupidly, releasing the the little air that I had been holding onto. The water has changed, becoming insistent and dragging me down. The fear consumes me, I am really terrified to die. What happened to dying peacefully?
Just fight for your life. My conscience screams.
I desperately fling my arms back and forth, pumping my legs to swim to the surface of the water. I swim until I can see a glimmer of light in the dark water, the surface was just there but my body is weaker now. I can barely move because I've driven my body to exertion.
I am just about to reach the surface when my breath finally gives out and I am forced to swallow the water.
I've tempted Satan with my soul, now he is going to make me drown.
You were almost there, I couldn't help thinking as I began to jerk uncontrollably, the water inducing spasms of my larynx. Within 30 seconds, the laryngospasms begin to weaken and I'm losing consciousness. My life begins flashing before my eyes and as my brain skims through my wonderful childhood, it isn't long before I see Richard. He was my first best friend. My first love. My first everything and my life with him flashed.
Realizing that I loved him. Marrying him after high school graduation. The discovery of his infidelity in college. Choosing to stay and work through our problems. Graduating college with honors with him at my side. Pursuing a modeling career to help support us while he became stable. Then finally coming home tonight to discover that that infidelity had never ceased.
The pain of knowing that 10 years of my life had been wasted in a one-sided loveless marriage with a cheating prick did not hit me as hard as earlier. The pain was just gone, I had not loss much with Richard... only time.
Then my flashes stop and I see what could be, my life starting anew. Dating, a faithful relationship with the man of my dreams, having children in my little farm house. I want it so bad but it is just out of my grasp. The water is pulling me down, refusing to allow me to float just under the waterline anyone. I am sinking like a stone.
I know that brain failure is imminent but I also know that there is one last chance to survive.
My body forces me to inhale again and with that force, I propel myself upwards. I finally break the surface of the water, spitting up all that awful tasting water that I had pretended tasted so sweet. I climb out of the pond, looking down at the misleading peaceful looking waves.
I ripped off the remainder of my underwear hating the feeling of wet clothing on my skin, decidi
ng right then and there that I would never step foot in any large body of water ever again. I start my walk back to my home.
When I opened the door to the house and made my way pass the clothing, I smiled a very dark smile.
When I heard the wailing moans of my soon to be ex husband's "secretary" I walked my undressed hip directly to them.
I took a deep breath clearing the visual of them making love from my head. Oh, I had grand plans for these two adulterers.
And now I would not go silently.
I opened the door, walking in and pausing to watch them. They were making love, it was no question.
The door smacked the wall hard alerting them that I was here. Emily's shocked gasp filled the air.
I walked right past both of their startled figures, to my dresser where my phone was with a smirk. "Hey guys, smile for the camera!"
I turned on my camera, snapping pictures of them on the bed still frozen, both staring at me in shock.
"Nice." I commented before making my way to my walk in closet. "Please forgive the intrusion, I'll be on my way in just a sec." I grabbed a dress for the after party that I was now late for and made my way to the bathroom humming happily.
At the angle that I took the pictures, the affair was unmistakable. I smiled at them again when I passed. Emily now scrambled to grab the covers that they had kicked on the floor. I chuckled, I had already saw everything she had to offer, with the comforter out of her reach she was now using Richard to shield her and neither of them would make eye contact with me.
"At least own up to what y'all were doing, be adults about it. I'm not mad." I said.
"Vivian, I can-" Richard began to try to make that dumb hip excuse, with that dumb hip look on his face pissing me off. The nasal sound of his voice was pissing me off. Everything about him was pissing me off. What did I ever see in him? Love sure blinded the outta me if I was just noticing this now.
"Explain? No need to Richard, I see you both right now. Again, continue if you wish, I'll be on my way in a minute." I said, shutting the bathroom door and showering.
I thanked fate for allowing me to leave my phone home in order to discover the affair. I took my sweet time, going all out with my routine and appreciating the warm water after I had been floating in that cold hip water for close to 3 hours. I even started to sing, ignoring Richard when he knocked on the door calling my name.
After I got done I continued ignoring him while I dried, lathered myself with oils, and did my hair. my time was all my own again. My days of answering to him were over.
"Freedom," I sang, opening the door and pushing past him. "Why were you undressed? What do you mean you're not mad?" He was frowning at the dress that I had on. "Where are you going Vivian?" He asked.
"Not today, Richard." I said, ignoring his question. Both of them were now dressed and she sat on the perfectly made as if the affair had never happened.
"Vivian, I would like to apologize," She began as we made eye- contact. I could almost respect her, but she was the worst type of person. They both were.
"How long?" I asked her.
"About-" She began.
"Emily shut it, Vivian its not what you think. We-"
"Save it, Richard. I was speaking to Emily, woman to woman. Now, how long?" I said looking at her. I saw his disbelief that I had just cut him off. I had never did it before but then again, I had never disrespected him by cheating or even entertaining the thought either.
"About 4 years." Longer than I thought initially, but now that I thought back he had stopped attending my shows around that time.
"Wow, I hope you both have a good night.
I'm out." From the corner of my eye I notice Richard eyeing me. I turned getting him a 360 view of my dress and his face turned red. "Where are you going, Vivian?" He said it possessively.
"To have passionate intercourse with a random stranger, Richard." I could feel a hysterical laugh building inside me but I manage to hold in in, smiling instead. "Its only fair that I make up for all the intercourse I've been missing out on due to your negligence. Enjoy your secretary, husband. When we're divorced, feel free to marry her because when I'm done with you, nobody will come near either of you again." I said, leaving them dumbfounded.
I made a show of bending to grab my purse at the doorway, turning back to smile seductively at Richard.
I giggled, standing and holding my head high as I walked out of the house to my car. I had never been insecure of my body but since Richard treated me as if I'd been invincible, and not from a lack of trying on my part, for the past two years I had been questioning myself. I mean slowly losing my self confidence as the significant other.
Never again... Near death experiences had a way of making you see what really mattered.
My happiness.
Call me selfish or whatever. I have missed out and tonight I was going to make up for it.
Nothing could make me stay to work things out at this point, I was divorcing him. With the proof I had, I would destroy him then take everything that he had. I wasn't walking away from this 10- year investment empty handed.
Once, he told me that he would give me the world.
But I could settle with his bank account. My fingers clutched at the sheets in a death grip as I braced for the answer.
"Don't change the subject !" He growled, glaring at me.
"Elisa's baby, is it yours?" I asked, feeling my own anger and frustration rise. I hated being accused of being a manipulator when I had no idea what it even was that I was supposedly manipulating. I was angry that Aiden could so blatantly cheat on me, could hold Elisa's hand while she was pregnant while I was all but starved of the tiniest form of affection from my husband.
—
I sagged against the wall of the clinic, not trusting my legs to carry me any further without collapsing in a heap on the floor.
Slowly, as though in a slow motion video, I lifted the picture clutched tight in my left hand and stared at the black and white mass that the nurse had handed over to me after the doctor had pronounced the four words that I had not been expecting at all.
Disbelief and shock and a dozen other thoughts waged a battle in my head. Most prominent thought was 'how?' How could I have gotten pregnant?
Which was a silly question, really. After all I knew all about how babies were made, I wasn't that naive. Still, it had been just the one time, my first time. One time.
A headache bloomed in my temples and I sighed and let my eyes drift shut. Unconsciously, I crumpled the paper in a tight fist, fighting the surge of tears that stung my lids. This was not the time to give in to bouts of self pity, I had to figure out what to do, how to break the news to Aiden and brace myself for what comes after.
I caught sight of the gleaming Mercedes already idling at the front entrance to the hospital, drawing admiring and envious gazes. Thanks to the heavily tinted windows, none of them could see the occupants of the car, but I knew Aiden would be in the back seat, watching me approach. Feeling self conscious at all the attention, I walked up to the car just as the driver's door opened and our chauffeur, Martin, came around to open the back door.
"Afternoon Ma'am." Martin intoned in crisp, professional tones as he held the door open.
"Hello Martin," I murmured, distractedly.
The cause of my distraction sat at the other end of the seat, narrowed dark brown eyes, set in a face that many women and men had described as drop dead gorgeous, were trained on me as he watched me almost lose balance and topple head first into the car.
Disapproval oozed from him in waves as he watched my blunder and my cheeks heated from embarrassment, but I managed to right myself just in time to avoid disaster, mumbling an apology that was ignored.
"Did you get the signed contract?" He asked, his voice deep, sliding over my ears like hot chocolate on a cold winter's morning and I had to suppress the thrilling shiver that ran through me. It wouldn't do to let him see how much everything about him affected me. Yes, I was hopelessly in love with him, but I didn't need a fortune teller to tell me my love was neither wanted nor reciprocated.
I bit the inside of my cheek and nodded. "Yes, everything's all set. We should be able to deliver the first batch of lab equipment by the end of month." I fished out my tablet and switched it on, quickly bringing up the signed contract for him to see. "Dr. Mason sends his regards as well."
Aiden merely spared one glance at the screen and nodded. "It's your project. You'll be the main liaison with Vincent at the hospital. Handle it well."
"Of course." I murmured and slid the tablet back in my purse. My fingers brushed the edge of the picture that would either be the final nail in the coffin of our marriage, or the start of a new beginning.
"Aiden..." My palms began to sweat and I could literally hear my heart pounding in my ears. I swallowed nervously and wiped my sweaty palms on my pants.
Rip off the bandaid.
He looked at me, expression devoid of any emotion. It had always been hard to get a read on Aiden and I usually prided myself on being able to read people with some measure of accuracy. Not Aiden though. He was a block of marble - cold, impenetrable.
"What is it?" There was a hint of impatience in his voice and that made me lose what little nerve I had managed to muster.
"I..." I hated myself for stuttering, because I could see how much it irritated him, if the narrowed eyes and wry twist of his lips was any indication. My hands formed tight fists, nails digging into the soft flesh of my palms, the pain helping to ground me a little. "While I was at the hospital, I stopped by..."
His phone went off, the sound shattering the tense moment and drowning out my words. I fell silent as Aiden cursed under his breath and slid the phone from his inner suit pocket to glance at the screen. In the dim interior of the car, I could easily see the lit up screen and the name of the caller displayed.
Elisa.
A tinge of bile filled my throat at the sight of the name. My shoulders sagged and I looked away, my chest feeling like a vise had clamped down on it, squeezing tight.
"Can it wait?" I heard Aiden ask and I glanced up at him. He was looking at me with that same impatient look, head turned to one side as he waited for my answer. "I need to take this call, we can talk afterwards."
"Yeah, sure." I said, forcing a lightness to my voice that I didn't feel. I watched as Aiden accepted the call, my throat tight as I noticed the way his voice got softer, the way his tense shoulders relaxed as he listened to the reply on the other end, the hint of a smile that lifted his stern mouth and felt the vice tighten until I could barely breathe.
Unable to bear the sight, I looked away, swallowing down the lump of bitter emotions that threatened to spill over. I let my mind wander again, unwilling to listen to whatever conversation they were having, knowing it would only hurt me more.

With a small sign, I stood up and headed towards my room, carrying the box. As I passed one of the rooms, I heard familiar voices coming from inside and without meaning to, I stopped to listen.
"Do you feel better now?" I heard Aiden say. His voice was gentle and filled with concern. I peeked into the room to see who he was talking to. Elisa lay on a daybed by the window with Aiden crouched in front of her, holding onto her hand.
"Yes," She replied and smiled weakly at him. "I'm sorry to be so much trouble."
"It's fine. Vincent will be up to check on you soon."
"I really don't need a doctor." Elisa whispered. "I'll be fine, really."
"You may be, but we don't want to risk anything, especially with the baby."
Shock reverberated through my entire body as I stood rooted to the spot, my head swimming from what I'd just heard. I must have made a sound because they both looked at me, Aiden with a dark expression and Elisa with what I could only describe as a guilty flush.
"What do you want?" Aiden straightened, his eyes flashing in impatience. Through the fog in my mind, I noticed that he hadn't let go of Elisa's hand even while talking to me.
I opened my mouth several times in an attempt to reply but no words came out, my brian seemingly having turned to mush. Several thoughts were swimming through my mind but most prominent were two big questions.
Elisa was pregnant and was Aiden the father?
My gaze landed on their clasped hands and a despair so deep started at the pit of my stomach.
"Jessica!" Aiden's bark pulled me from the jumble of my thoughts. I stared at him blankly, my eyes welling with unshed tears then I looked at Elisa.
"You're pregnant?" I asked stupidly. My voice was a low whisper, broken and hoarse.
At her nod, my knees threatened to give way and I gripped the door for support. I wanted to ask my second question, but I couldn't bring myself to utter the words, I didn't want to know the truth because I wasn't sure I would survive it.
The box slipped from my numb hand and tumbled to the floor with a dull thud. Aiden's eyes fell on the box and if it were possible for his expression to get any colder, it did.
"What are you doing with that?" He demanded in a tone filled with frost.
Still shocked I glanced down at the box then bent down to pick it up. The metal felt cold in my hand as I clasped it to my chest, while fighting the sting of tears.
"Who gave that to you?" Aiden asked. He let go of Elisa's hand and stalked towards me, eyes shooting sparks of blue ice.
"Jodie gave it to me." I replied, taking a step back as he approached, feeling a bit frightened by his ferocity.
He stopped in front of me, mouth set in a thin line. "We need to talk. Now."
Without waiting for my response, his hand closed over my wrist and he towed me along as he strode out of the room, pausing only to reassure Elisa that he would be right back. I stumbled behind him, struggling to match his long strides, clutching the box to my chest like a lifeline. We entered his room and he let go of me to slam the door shut.
The curtains were drawn, casting the room in darkness but I could make out some of the furnishings. Not trusting my legs to hold me up any longer, I perched on the edge of the bed, rubbing my sweaty palms over my dress as I watched Aiden pace round the room, my pulse fluttering in anxiety.
Finally, with a brusque laugh that held bitterness, Aiden stopped in front of me, arms folded. "You really are something else, Jessica." his tone dripped with frost. "Even after two years in this marriage, you're still so determined to manipulate me to get what you want right?"
"Is it yours?" I blurted out the question that had been hovering on the edge of my lips.
Something flashed across his expression but was gone too quickly for me to identify what it was. Then his lips thinned, his eyes flashing with mockery. "And what if it is?" He drawled. "Surely you did not expect me to live like a monk when I have a cold fish for a wife?"
Each word hit me with the force of a thousand bricks. "That's not fair, Aiden."
"Fair? You want to talk to me about what's fair?" Aiden leaned over me, one hand on each side, effectively caging me in. "Don't make this into a pity party for yourself, Jessica, you don't get to feel sorry for any misery you brought on yourself the day you plotted with my father to force me to marry you."
I shut my eyes so he wouldn't see my despair. "For the last time, I had nothing to do with Julian's decision."
"Yes, well he's not here to defend himself, is he?" Aiden sneered. He gestured at the box which was on the bed. "Do you really think what's in that box can stop me from ending this marriage?"
"I don't know." I whispered, each pulse like a thousand needles piercing through my skin. I didn't know what was in the box, but what I did know was that I could no longer lie to myself. My marriage was beyond saving and even if Aiden chose to stay with me, we would just continue to hurt each other.
I drew in a shaky breath and gathered my thoughts. "You're right, there's no use trying to save this marriage anymore. We should get a divorce, I'm willing to sign anything, let's just go our separate ways."
He stared at me, his gaze roving over my face as though he was trying to gauge the depth of my emotions. "Why?"
"You said it yourself, our marriage is a sham and it's making us both miserable so we might as well end it." I couldn't resist adding bitterly. "And you can finally be with the one you've always wanted."
He straightened, folded his arms, still watching me intently. "What do you want in the divorce?"
"I really don't care. I just want this to be over." I pushed to my feet, wanting to be alone, where I could feel sorry for myself in peace. "I have a flight to catch in two hours, you can send over the divorce papers when I get to Winsconsin. I'll move my things out of the house when I get back from my trip. Excuse me."
I pushed past him, but he stopped me. "About Elisa..." he began but I stopped him with a cold glare.
"I don't care anymore, Aiden. You can marry her tomorrow for all I care. Have a nice life."
I stormed out of the room and almost collided into Vincent who was just entering the room. He steadied me, his brow furrowing when he saw the state I was in.
"Jess, what's wrong?" He asked, eyes darting from me to Aiden.
"Nothing's wrong, I just have a flight to catch. Please excuse me." I broke free from his grip and hurried away. Let Aiden be the one to explain, let him say whatever he wanted, I didn't care anymore. I just wanted to leave Skye manor and everything it meant.
Needing to avoid the people milling about, I headed for the west side where there was a set of stairs that led to the lake and from there I could get to the parking lot. My bags were still in the car and I could only hope that Martin was closeby.
"Jess! Wait a moment." Elisa called out from behind me. I hastened my steps, I didn't want to talk to her, didn't trust myself to not lose my cool and lash out at her. Right now, I hated her for everything she represented.
"Jessica!" she called out again but I kept moving. I could see the stairs just ahead and hurried towards it. Just as I reached the first step, I felt my arm being wrenched from behind.
I turned towards her defensively, intending to yank my arm away. The next seconds happened in slow motion as I watched, the horrified look on Elisa's face as she stumbled forward from the force, tripped over my foot and plunged headfirst down the steep flight of stairs.
I heard a piercing scream and realized it was coming from me, as I stood frozen as Elisa tumbled down the stairs to land in a broken heap at the base. My heart hammered in my chest, fingers stiff and cold as I forced myself to move, eyes glued on the gruesome sight below. Someone shoved past me, pushing me aside so hard my shoulder hit the guardrail and I gasped as pain bloomed from the spot.
"What did you do to her?" Aiden had reached Elisa, he kneeled down beside her, his expression a picture of panic and fear. He gathered her carefully in his arms and I felt my head swim at the sight of the blood pooling beneath her. I slid down and sat on a step, my legs having turned to jelly.
"Aiden, don't move her, she may have a spinal injury." Vincent yelled as he brushed past me. Aiden set her back down on the ground, her face pale and lifeless.
"Call nine one one." Vincent instructed as he began emergency procedures on Elisa. With trembling fingers, Aiden pulled out his cell phone and dialed.
The next hour passed in a blur. The ambulance came and went, Aiden and Vincent going along with them, but not before Aiden had paused by me to say harshly.
"If anything happens to Elisa or her baby, you'll wish you were never born."
I stood gazing in the distance long after the tail lights of the ambulance had disappeared, unaware of anything, my mind blank of any thought save the sight of Elisa lying helpless and bleeding.
Someone draped a large jacket over my shoulders and I finally tore my eyes away from the treeline to see Logan standing beside me.
"It's freezing out here, come inside." He gently steered me towards the house and my feet followed, still numb.
"I need to go to the hospital," I mumbled, clutching at the lapels of the coat. "Need to make sure she's okay."
"I'll take you there." Logan assured me as he led me to a chair. "But first, let's get you warmed up and out of shock."
I shook my head and attempted to stand up. "No, I need to go now. Elisa could be..." I choked off with a sob, unwilling to complete my sentence.
Logan pulled me into a hug. "She'll be alright, Jess. Don't worry."
I pulled away and turned towards the door. "Please, Logan. Let's go now."
He saw the desperation on my face and nodded. "Okay, let's go."
We got into his car, a sleek black ferrari convertible just as Jodie caught up to us.
"Mom, we're heading to the hospital," I heard him say to her. I was still too numb to do much more than sit there, tense and worried because I was scared to death.
She leaned down to my window and took my hands in hers, giving me a comforting squeeze. "Are you alright, hun?"
Tears filled my eyes and I shook my head. I wasn't sure if I would ever be alright again. She gently pushed back strands of my hair that had come loose from my face. "I...I didn't mean to hurt her...I would never try to..."
"I know, dear. Don't beat yourself up. It was an accident, and those happen sometimes. Remember not to push yourself too hard, there's someone who depends on your well being, okay?"
I nodded and she smiled, let go of my hands and turned to her son. "Drive carefully and give me a call when you get to the hospital."
"Yeah mom. I'll do that." Logan turned on the ignition and the engines responded with a loud roar.
"What happened, Jess?" Logan asked once we were on the road to the hospital which was thankfully not too far. "How did Elisa fall down those stairs?"
I sighed and told him everything. From Elisa's pregnancy with Aiden to our impending divorce and finally, with a throat tight with emotion, the scene at the stairs. I told him about my pregnancy as well. Logan listened with growing incredulity, his knuckles in a death grip on the wheel, jaw set in fury.
"I'm going to kill him." He gritted out once I had finished. "That cheating prick had the balls to threaten you because of his side chick? I'm going to cut off his balls and stuff them in his mouth. He cheated on you while you're carrying his child?"
"He doesn't know about the baby." I rubbed at my belly distractedly. "I was going to tell him after my trip."
"That doesn't excuse him at all. He shouldn't have cheated on you."
I hummed in response, grateful that we were approaching the hospital parking lot. We hurried into the building, my anxiety at critical levels as we neared the front desk, then followed directions to the trauma ward.
"What are you doing here?" Aiden growled at me when we entered the surgery waiting room. He and Vincent were the only ones inside, their clothing rumpled and stained with blood. "Get out, right now."
"Don't order her around." Logan snapped, coming to stand in front of me, his eyes glaring daggers at Aiden. "Unless this room is in your name, you don't get to decide who stays or leaves."
"Logan," Aiden took several steps forward, tone low and deadly. "Do not test me right now. Take her and get out of here before I do something that'll land us both in prison."
"Logan, let's leave. Please." I tugged at his sleeve, scared that the two men would actually come to blows.
"We're not leaving. I'd like to see what he can do."
At this time, both men were literally nose to nose and the air was thick with so much tension, you could slice it with a blunt knife.
Aiden's jaw worked, his knuckles white and I could see he was trying his best not to swing at Logan. Both men were tall, though Aiden had several inches on Logan, his shoulders were broader, muscles more well defined. Still, I'd seen Logan fight before, he'd broken more than his share of noses in highschool and college. The guy could hold his own against a bigger opponent.
"Okay, the both of you need to calm down." Vincent inserted himself between the two men, arms out on either side. "This is neither the time nor place for this, not while Elisa is in surgery."
When neither man still moved, Vincent gently pushed Aiden back and he moved away reluctantly, his gaze still pinned on Logan.
Vincent turned to me, his eyes devoid of actual warmth for the first time since I'd known him. "Jess, you two can stay."
"How is Elisa?" I asked.
"She's still in surgery for internal bleeding, but the ER doctor said she didn't have any spinal injuries, so that's good, but with the baby, she's not out of the woods yet."
"I'm so sorry." I whispered. "This is my fault." If only I had stopped to talk to her, if only I hadn't tried to pull away when she grabbed my arm...
So many if onlys.
Aiden scoffed and pinned me with a glare. "Of course it's your fault. You pushed her, didn't you?"
"No!" I cried out, shaking my head frantically. "I didn't push her, I swear. I would never do that."
He looked like he didn't believe me. "Of course, you didn't."
"She didn't push her, prick." Logan snapped at Aiden. "Your girlfriend was the one who came running after Jess, probably to gloat over the divorce."
"Watch your mouth or I swear I'll..."
"Guys, cool it." Vincent raised his voice in exasperation. "We're going to get thrown out of the hospital if you keep this up."
We retreated to opposite sides of the room, Logan and I on one end, Aiden and Vincent at the other. Aiden sat down and took out his phone and proceeded to ignore us.
An hour passed before a doctor clad in purple scrubs came over to inform us that Elisa was out of surgery and in recovery. She had ruptured her spleen in the fall and sustained some injuries, including a broken arm, but otherwise would be expected to make a full recovery.
We all breathed out a collective sigh of relief until Aiden asked tersely. "And the baby? Will it be okay?" LEARN_MORE https://a.mobobooks.com/ad/TW9ib29rcy8xNzE4NDgvMjA 187930081060768 Mob003 https://facebook.com/61553279956983 38 1 477,067,381,417,164 2024-05-08 02:00 person_profile eligible 0 0 NONE 0 0 1 0 Learn more 0 Mob003 120208152637870018 a.mobobooks.com NONE video https://a.mobobooks.com/ad/TW9ib29rcy8xNzE4NDgvMjAyNDA1MDgxMDU4MzgvcGFnZQ==?adid={{ad.id}} 2024-05-07 22:04 https://scontent-iad3-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/440430202_746164057700535_71523166975554978_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_s60x60&_nc_cat=106&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=C-PK97Xtg9gQ7kNvgFySkfo&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-2.xx&oh=00_AfDXbqYJQYkH8OPOXnOXddB3UVt03e-T4ZERCfYBEMAtpg&oe=6641E009 person_profile 0 Mob003 https://scontent-iad3-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/441966359_922444912904849_5717512976562843954_n.jpg?_nc_cat=106&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=EN7bHXvxjZMQ7kNvgH7Pn7r&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-2.xx&oh=00_AfDKq-xm9-Eu4W7M-xV0z4O_RNQzjyK9pKWD2x3PpzWMQA&oe=6641D44C 0 3 Mob003 0 0 2024-05-08 02:00 View Edit

The very idea both terrifies and arouses me. When I don't push him away, he smiles.
————————
SUMMER
Pressed against the wall of the nightclub, the good-looking stranger pecks me. Tipsy and disoriented, my heart races with a mix of uncertainty and desire. I never expected my night to take such a thrilling turn.
Sweat clings to my skin as the crowded club pulsates around us on this hot summer night. Loud music drowns out any semblance of conversation while flashing lights create an electrifying atmosphere, amplifying the raw energy that courses through my veins.
As we remain locked in our forbidden embrace, I'm acutely aware of how out of character this is for me. Yet, there's something so undeniably exciting about living on the edge, if only for a brief moment in time. The danger and uncertainty, combined with the allure of this mysterious stranger, have awakened a long-dormant fire.
The stranger's hands greedily explore my body's curves, leaving fire trails on my flushed skin. His tall frame towers over me, dark hair framing intense blue eyes that seem to pierce my very soul. Tattoos snake their way up his muscular arms, and even though I can't hear him speak over the pounding bass, the memory of his Irish accent as he drew me into this darkened corner sends shivers down my spine.
Our lips collide again, and every nerve in my body awakens with a mix of hesitation, excitement, and nervousness. The sensation is intoxicating – something I've never felt before. It's as if we're dancing on the edge of a precipice, teetering between wicked and desire, and I'm powerless to resist the pull.
His fingers trace the contours of my hips, pressing into my flesh with a possessiveness that terrifies and thrills me. My breath hitches in my throat as he tugs at the hem of my dress, exposing more of my quivering skin to his ravenous touch. I should be afraid, but instead, I crave more of this deliciously wrong connection.
As our pecks deepen, I find myself lost in the whirlwind of emotions swirling inside me. The seductive dance of our tongues mirrors the chaos in my mind, each stroke sending electric jolts through my veins.
What am I doing?
Is this really who I want to be?
Even as these thoughts race through my head, my body betrays me, responding eagerly to his every touch. I feel my heart pounding, not just from the exertion but from the thrill of the unknown. This man, this enigma who has captured my attention and ensnared me in his web of desire, holds a power over me that I can't explain.
"What's your name?" I pant, wanting to know more about this stranger who has awakened such primal urges, but the cacophony of the nightclub drowns out my voice. He only smirks in response, his eyes never leaving mine, bewitching me within their depths.
I'm terrified.
This dark, brooding stranger has unlocked a part of me that has long been hidden away, and as much as I know I should be afraid, all I can think about is how alive I finally feel as his fingers trail up my thigh, sending shivers down my spine. My breath catches in my throat, my heart racing with anticipation and uncertainty.
"Wait," I whisper, suddenly feeling the weight of our actions through the drunken haze that has descended on me from too many glasses of cheap Chardonnay. "Your name..."
Something wicked and alluring dances in his blue gaze. Without breaking eye contact, he pushes my panties aside. My body tenses at the unexpected intrusion. For a moment, I feel vulnerable, exposed, and scared, but then his fingers find their target, and my resistance melts away.
"Ah!" The sensation is intense, a mix of pleasure and pain as he works his fingers inside me. I cling to him, my hands gripping his shoulders, my nails digging into his skin through the fabric of his tight black shirt. He holds me against the wall, one hand pinning me by the waist while the other sends waves of pleasure coursing through my body.
I gasp, my head falling back against the wall as he picks up the pace, expertly teasing and tormenting me. My leg wraps around his waist instinctively, drawing him closer, my hips grinding against his hand in a desperate search for more of that intoxicating sensation.
Raising an eyebrow in question, as if challenging me to admit just how much I crave his touch. I nod, unable to form words, and he rewards me with another delicious thrust of his fingers.
Around us, the club-goers are lost in their own world of revelry, utterly oblivious to the scandalous exchange just inches from them. A tangled mass of sweaty bodies writhes on the dance floor, consumed by the pulsing beat of the music. Drinks clink, laughter rings out, and it's as if we exist in our own secret bubble, hidden from the judgmental eyes of the world.
"God, you're so wet for me, Tinkerbell," he growls in my ear, and I shiver at the sound. His voice is dark and commanding, a dangerous edge that weakens my knees. "You like being drilled by a stranger in the middle of a club?"
I can't deny it. The very idea both terrifies and arouses me. As much as I want to pull away, to escape this intoxicating dance of desire and danger, I find myself giving into the temptation completely.
When I don't push him away, he smiles. It's sinister, and it touches a part of me that I know I should run from.
But I don't.
"Good girl," he purrs, sending a hot thrill down my spine. And with that, I surrender to the darkness, allowing him to take control, to push me further than I've ever dared to go before.
When his body goes slack, he leans his forehead against mine, his hot breath mingling with my panting. We stay like that for a moment, him buried inside me, neither of us aware of the reality around us, time entirely lost to us.
Knowing what I've just done crashes around me like a thunderstorm. I've just had unprotected with a stranger in a club in front of hundreds of people.
He pulls back, that sinful smile on his face as he does up his fly.
"Thanks, Tinks. I needed that."
As abruptly as he entered my life, he now walks away, disappearing into the throng of club-goers without so much as a backward glance. The emptiness left in his wake engulfs me entirely, an inexplicable mixture of satisfaction and confusion swirling around inside. He had been everything I both feared and craved – and yet he vanished as quickly as a shadow in the night.
My heart pounds erratically in my chest, caught between the exhilaration of what just transpired and the anguish of knowing it might never happen again. Why can't I shake this feeling? This insatiable longing for a man I don't even know?
I mutter, shoving my dress down and looking around to see if anyone is looking at me.
They aren't. Or if they are, they aren't doing so overtly.
Wiggling my panties back into place, I feel the dampness pool, and I shudder.
What have I done?
Feeling nauseous with the booze and the knowledge of my actions, I lean against the cool wall, trying to catch my breath and make sense of the overwhelming mix of emotions coursing through me. The taste of him still lingers on my lips, a bittersweet reminder of what just transpired in this dim corner of the club.
Tinkerbell, he'd called me, his Irish accent making the words sound like a deliciously wicked incantation. A shiver runs down my spine as I remember the way he'd looked at me, his intense blue eyes seeming to pierce through every layer of my defenses, laying my darkest desires.
"Summer?" I hear my name being called faintly over the cacophony, snapping me out of my reverie. It's my friend. Her voice tinged with concern. I know she must be wondering where I've been, why I disappeared so suddenly – but how could I possibly explain the truth to her? How could I put into words the intensity of my encounter with the enigmatic stranger?
"Summer, let's go home," Amelia says, finding me. "I'm way past drunk."
"Same." I nod, eager to escape the oppressive atmosphere of the club. As we make our way through the throngs of people, I glance back one last time, my eyes scanning the crowd for any glimpse of him. But he's gone, vanished like a ghost into the night.
"Are you okay?" Amelia asks, her worried gaze fixed on me.
I force a smile, trying to mask the turmoil within.
"Fine," I lie, my voice barely audible above the din. "I'm fine."
But as we step out into the cool night air, I can't shake the feeling that something has changed forever – that I've crossed a line from which there's no turning back. Part of that is fueled by beverage, hunger for the dangerous taste of forbidden desire, now awakened and impossible to ignore.
---
Waking up with a raging thirst, a banging head and stiff legs, I moan against the light pouring into my bedroom through a crack in the curtains.
Celebrating my twenty-fifth birthday yesterday had been a mistake. I should've stayed home, knowing I had work today.
Half an hour later, and not a moment too soon, I race into the store, brushing down my clothes.
"Morning, Summer," my coworker Jess greets me. "Ready for another fun-filled day?"
"Thrilled," I reply sarcastically, forcing a smile. We exchange pleasantries, but my mind is elsewhere, filled with shame and lingering thoughts of Irish. That's his name now. I can't keep thinking of him as a stranger. It's unappealing and makes me edgy.
"Hey, are you okay?" Jess asks concern etched on her face. "You seem off."
"Long night," I admit, not wanting to divulge the details of my one-night stand. "Just need more coffee, I guess."
"Ah, the hangover cure-all," she jokes, attempting to lighten the mood. "Well, hang in there. You've got this."
"Thanks, Jess," I say, grateful for her support.
Foregoing more coffee on my delicate stomach, I get straight to work, needing the distraction. But as I fold clothes and help customers, Irish's face haunts me. His touch lingers on my skin like a phantom caress, stirring up a risky mix of desire and guilt.
I force my attention back to work, determined not to let my personal turmoil affect my performance. Customers come and go, their questions and needs pulling me out of my head for brief moments. But each time the store quiets down, the ghost of Irish returns, taunting me with his memory.
As the hours drag on, my feet ache from standing, my head pounds, and I'm hungry at the same time as nauseous. I wonder if my one reckless night with the enigmatic Irishman might somehow be a twisted blessing in disguise – a chance to break free from the shackles of my mundane existence and embrace the tantalizing allure of danger and desire.
As I finish restocking the shelves and return to the sales floor, I can't shake the feeling that I'm teetering on the edge of something life-changing. Despite knowing I should forget about Irish and move on with my life, part of me wonders if our paths will cross again – and what dark secrets he's hiding beneath that charming exterior.
The afternoon sun casts long shadows on the store floor, and I feel like they're closing in on me. My thoughts keep drifting back to Irish, no matter how hard I try to focus on my tasks.
"Excuse me," a customer says, bringing me back to reality. "Can you help me find a shirt that matches this tie?"
"Of course," I reply, forcing a cheerful smile. We make our way through the maze of clothing racks, my mind racing with questions. Does Irish feel the same way I do? Or has he already moved on to someone else? He seems the type, what with seducing me and then striding off.
"Here you are," I say, handing the man a perfectly matched shirt. He thanks me for my assistance before walking away, leaving me to my turbulent thoughts again.
A shiver runs down my spine as I imagine Irish's eyes locked onto mine, his accent teasing every part of me. The forbidden desire bubbling up refuses to be silenced, even though I know it's dangerous to entertain these fantasies.
"Summer, can you take over at the register?" Jess asks, snapping me out of my reverie.
"Sure, no problem," I respond, stepping behind the counter. As I ring up customers' purchases, my heart flutters with anxiety, wondering if Irish has any regrets about our night together. I can't shake the feeling that there must be something more to him - something darker lurking beneath the surface. He is attracted, but nice guys don't do what he did.
Neither do nice girls.
Cringing at the thoughts, I shake it off. I'm not a yummy yukker. 'You do you' has always been my motto, but it was out of character for me to do what I did last night, and it will probably take me a while to get over the guilt I feel.
Smiling at the young woman, I ring up her goods and wait for her to pay. She thanks me and leaves, her heady perfume lingering in the air like a ghostly reminder of last night's passion.
"Home time!" Gary calls out, crossing over to me with a smile. "Thank, am I right?"
"Yeah." Giving him a shy smile, I lower my eyes. He's my work crush. He's tall with blonde hair and green eyes that crinkle at the corners when he smiles. I always fluster when he speaks to me, even though he is the friendliest guy going. "I'm exhausted."
"Partied hard last night?" he asks with a twinkle in his eye. "Sorry I couldn't make it, but I had a thing."
"It's okay, and yeah, a bit too much."
My cheeks are hotter than the flames of infernoinferno as I stammer my way out of this conversation with a half-hearted wave, rushing past him to the break room to gather my belongings from my locker. Hoping he didn't hear anything about anything, I will be sure to avoid him for the foreseeable future, just in case.
Stepping outside the store, the evening air is hot and sweaty on my skin as the humidity levels have not dropped.
Glaring at the clear blue sky, I curse it. "Where is the supposed thunderstorm?" I mutter and head for the parking lot, only to be stopped short when I remember I don't have my car; I have the bus.
All I want to do is hurry home, have a cool shower and then, in incognito mode, look up places I can go to get tested, preferably somewhere out of town so no one sees me.
As I walk to the bus stop, surrounded by people finishing their city jobs and leaving the stores as they close, these thoughts of Irish continue to haunt me. I know I should forget about him and move on with my life, but something inside me clings to the hope that he might be the one I've been waiting for. The taste of danger, coupled with whiskey and smoke, lingers on my lips, making it impossible to let go completely.
Wondering if our paths will cross again and what sinister truths are concealed in those irresistible eyes, all I can do is keep moving forward, one step at a time, until I hear a voice behind me that freezes my blood instantly.
As I glance up, my heart skips a beat. There he is—Irish. Yes 2024-05-08 18:35 active 760 0 795326672526809 I can make him, I can also break him...I'll make the bitch pay My name is Shayla Stein, thirty years old.

Among peers, I have always been the envy of many, living in a detached house in the upscale district of Fora, with a young, handsome, and caring husband who loves me like a first love. He is renowned as a model husband, attentive and caring, who takes care of me like a princess. His name is Finnegan Mercer, who used to be a well-known senior stylist. Before that, I ran a medical equipment company, with a considerable annual income.

After marriage, I gave birth to three lovely and beautiful babies. Balancing work and parenting responsibilities was challenging, but my husband tenderly resigned to help me manage the company. Under his guidance, the company flourished. I, on the other hand, embraced the life of a full-time housewife, enjoying life, raising children, and becoming the envy of others.

But I noticed my health deteriorating rapidly. I started losing hair, became increasingly lethargic, lost weight, had memory lapses, and felt mentally drained, even disoriented.

My husband said I was suffering from typical anxiety disorder, sought out renowned doctors, and prescribed multiple medications for me, which the housekeeper delivered to me on time.

Little did I know, this was the beginning of a near-death experience for me.

One day, while half asleep, I was startled by a sharp pain in my head. Accidentally, I knocked over the medication that my housekeeper Jessica Wallace had brought me. The gluttonous cat, taking advantage of my drowsiness, devoured the drugs before I could. When Jessica came to clean up, I didn't mention it to her to avoid the hassle of getting more medicine.

To be honest, I had been fed up with the medication long ago. It was ineffective, but out of consideration for my husband's efforts in getting them for me, I continued to take them as instructed.

Since falling ill, the entire household chores were entrusted to Jessica, who tirelessly managed everything. Sometimes I felt guilty that she had to bear such a burden.

After exchanging a few words with me, she left to continue her tasks.

Glancing at the pillow, I noticed another layer of fallen black hair. It was distressing to see, so I sighed, collected the fallen hair, rolled it into a bundle, and stuffed it into the pocket of my robe.

Suddenly, a muffled sound from behind startled me!

I clutched my chest for a while before cautiously turning to the other side of the bed, only to find Lucky, who had been leisurely observing outside, lying motionless on the ground, silent and still.

That inexplicably gave me an ominous premonition.

"Lucky!" I called out, but it didn't move.

A chill ran down my spine, and my hair stood on end.

This was an unprecedented situation for it. They say that cats have nine lives and excellent balance, so how could it have fallen from the window sill?

Is it... dead?

With my heart in my throat, I hesitantly approached and realized that it was breathing heavily, not dead, but it seemed like it was sleeping!

But this sleeping posture...

Suddenly, a dreadful thought flashed through my mind!

Instinctively, I jumped out of bed, disregarding many things, and picked up Lucky. It was limp, devoid of any response, defenseless.

I couldn't help but think of myself. Was I also in a similar state of slumber every day?

Could it be...

The idea flashed through my mind, and I shuddered as if falling into an ice cave, afraid to think further!

Before I could ponder over it, I heard the familiar sound of footsteps outside the door. It must be Finnegan coming back...

Instinctively, I hugged Lucky, quickly got into bed, pulled the blanket over to cover Lucky's strange state, adjusted my breathing to pretend to be asleep.

At the same time, the door handle made a clicking sound, my heart raced, and I could even feel a gaze sweeping over my back, making me feel a lingering pain, my hands uncontrollably trembling under the blanket.

But the anticipated footsteps did not come in, instead, they retreated outside. Just as the door was about to close, I heard Finnegan ask, "Did you take the medicine?"

The rest of the words were blocked outside the door, and I didn't know what he said.

The next moment, I suddenly opened my eyes, an unprecedented fear surged, filling my soul. I didn't even know where I was at this moment, whether I was in a dream, having a nightmare?

The scene in front of me couldn't help but make me think of that bowl of medicine.

I had raised Lucky for many years, and it never had this kind of state before. The only thing different was that it had just taken medicine meant for me.

This thought made me extremely frightened.

Could it be that someone was really trying to harm me?

Chapter 2 Speculation
Finnegan's image and Jessica's face kept alternating in my mind, and while I wanted to confirm my suspicion, I was vehemently denying it deep within.

I couldn't bring myself to accept this fact.

It can't be.

Finnegan loves me.

From our acquaintance to love, to having this home and our three lovely children, he has always been caring, devoted, and protective of me.

Throughout these ten years, we have never had a single argument, and his affection towards me has always been unwavering. How could he possibly do something like this to me?

It's absolutely impossible!

But if it's Jessica, that doesn't make sense either.

Before she came to our house, I didn't even know her. There was no grudge between us, and she had a high salary at my home.

When she first came to my house, it was me who went to pick her. She is two years older than me, and she looks neat. After graduating from high school, she entered this profession and became a top-notch housekeeper.

When she first came, my husband seemed a little dissatisfied. He even asked me quietly, "She's too young, isn't she? Is she reliable?"

"You think young people are unreliable? She looks nice and must be nimble! She is a great housekeeper; you're too picky!" I teased him with a smirk. "I should be the one who's worried, right?"

He teasingly pinched my cheek and replied, "What are you thinking? Don't talk nonsense!"

Then he hugged me and compromised, "Okay, as long as you feel comfortable with her, she is here for you. I'm just worried that our kids won't like her and will want a new housekeeper after a while! It's quite a headache!"

I didn't expect Jessica to have such patience; it had been almost eight years. We had gotten along well during these eight years, I treated her like a sister, so how could she possibly drug me?

Moreover, if it were her, Finnegan wouldn't fail to notice the change in my condition after taking the medicine...

I really dared not think further.

Not sure if it was due to not taking the medication or the cat's condition that had scared me, but I broke away from my usual drowsiness. Like an awakened spirit from a foggy state, I felt unusually alert, with every cell in my body bursting with energy, consumed by extreme excitement.

Fear made it impossible for me to close my eyes.

It was such a long night.

But what chilled me even more was that during this whole time, no one observed my condition, nor did anyone inquire if I had eaten.

I had to accept a bitter truth: my days had been lonely, with an independent space where no one cared. It seemed like Finnegan's affection and concern for me weren't as apparent as I thought.

Just like tonight, the care I expected from my husband hadn't materialized. Perhaps he had become accustomed to my constant drowsiness.

As the sky gradually brightened, Lucky, who had been asleep under the covers all night, began to regain consciousness slowly.

At first, its eyes were unfocused, and it let out a feeble meow.

After a while, it moved its limbs slightly, then more vigorously, turned over, curled up next to me, assuming its usual sleeping position. However, it still seemed lazy and lacked energy, indicating that it wasn't entirely awake.

This condition bore an eerie resemblance to how I felt every time I woke up, deepening my suspicions.

Helplessly, I hugged the cat tightly, burying my face in its soft fur, shedding silent tears.

I couldn't understand why this was happening. Who was behind all this?

After a while, I raised my head, clenched my teeth, and told myself firmly that I couldn't sit idly by; I had to find the truth.

Determined, I realized that I couldn't tip my hand yet. I had to continue 'sleeping'!

First and foremost, I needed to find out who drugged me and for what purpose.

At this moment, I clung to a glimmer of hope, willing to believe that Jessica was involved, making it easier for me to accept.

But reality hit hard, shattering my hopes into painful shards, much harsher than I'd expected.

Chapter 3 Who is the mastermind behind the scenes?
I woke up from a sleepless night, feeling exhausted and sickly. I leaned against the head of the bed, knowing it was time to take my medicine. Jessica should be here soon; after all, I need to take my medicine 'on time'.

When Jessica pushed open the door, she momentarily looked surprised, then quickly put on a gentle smile. "Missus, you look much better today! You seem in very good spirits, which I didn't expect!"

I forced a smile but continued to observe her carefully.

As she pulled open the curtains, she also handed me a piece of clothing, "Let some fresh air in by opening the window and changing the air."

I sat there listlessly, intentionally stating, "I'm a little hungry!"

"Well, I'll go get your breakfast! It's been a long time since I've heard you say you're hungry!" She happily walked out, "Wait a moment, I'll be right back!"

As she walked past the bed, a faint scent of perfume lingered in the air. I have always been sensitive to smells, and even a faint scent can't escape my notice. It was the Chanel Chance Eau Tendre, my favorite perfume, because Finnegan liked it. He said it was a subtle scent that evoked imagination.

I clenched my fist tightly, feeling short of breath. Subconsciously, I thought about the news about husbands and mistresses conspiring to harm their wives, but I immediately dismissed it as too far-fetched.

After a while, the door was pushed open, and I instinctively looked up to see Finnegan walking in with the medicine. He appeared concerned, with a gentle smile and warm eyes. He approached me in the sunshine from the window, looking bright and warm. However, I was reminded of his question from last night, "Did you take the medicine?" and my heart sank.

"Honey, you look good today! Jessica said you feel hungry?" He placed the medicine on the bedside table, took my hand, and his warmth was still so familiar. He looked at me affectionately and asked softly, "What do you want to eat? I'll make it for you. Okay?"

"Never mind, I can't eat much anyway. Don't worry about it!" I tried to calm down, pretending to be concerned, "What time did you come back last night? I didn't even know. Are you busy with work?"

"There's a sales conference going on lately, quite busy. Many clients need quotations. When I came back, Jessica said she had just finished giving you the medicine, and then I was busy in the study until late and then slept there." He answered, even yawning involuntarily.

Seeing his tired appearance, I suddenly felt guilty. He was telling the truth. Every year, the sales conference would bring a pile of quotations to deal with. He's working hard for our family. I shouldn't have doubted him.

It must be Jessica harming me.

He picked up the medicine, smelled it, and said, "Come on, take the medicine first, and then we'll have breakfast!"

I pretended to frown and said coquettishly, "What's the use? Taking it doesn't work at all. I feel nauseous. Can't I skip it, honey?"

"Darling, the medicine needs to be taken on time. You seem better today. Dr. Fletcher improved the prescription the day before yesterday. Looks like it's working! Don't be disheartened!" He said calmly, without any flaw, still the loving husband.

Watching him unaware, I felt trapped. If I took the medicine, I would soon fall into a deep sleep and wouldn't be able to find evidence or expose the mastermind behind the scenes.

"I don't want to take it!" I said, leaning into his arms, my mind racing on how to distract him.

He patted my back, comforting me, and handed me the medicine, "Be good, listen to me, hurry up and take the medicine! Let's redouble our efforts!"

I felt anxious, realizing that I couldn't escape it.

"I'll do it myself!" I said, reluctantly taking the medicine, feeling my heart race.

I was sure that if I took the medicine now, I would fall asleep in half an hour.

However, Finnegan, looking concerned, his eyes filled with tenderness, betrayed an undetectable stubbornness that made me suspicious. Why did he insist on me taking it?

In the past, I would have been swayed by his affectionate gaze, but now, behind his smile, I seemed to see a sharp dagger, approaching me not out of love, but to coerce me.

I felt helpless, unable to show my frustration or act out, and I had to take the medicine.

Chapter 4 Meeting a Worthy Opponent
Just when I thought I couldn't avoid this, unexpectedly, Jessica walked in.

Finnegan's eyes were still on me. I brought the medicine to my lips, and only then did Finnegan smile in relief, shifting his attention to Jessica.

Taking advantage of his distraction, I discreetly hid the medicine, pretending that I had taken it and even drank some water to assist the pretend swallowing.

By this time, Finnegan was looking at me again. He saw that the medicine was gone and I was sipping water, he looked at me approvingly, and kissed my forehead before picking up the bowl of food, wanting to feed me.

I blushed and pushed him away, "You should go to work! Don't be so cheesy!"

He smiled, "Okay, then, I'll go to work! You eat it and then rest! I'll try to come back early tonight, spend time with you and Darryl!"

"Okay!" I watched him, feigning a lingering emotion, "Hurry up! Come back early tonight!"

In reality, I was afraid he'd tuck in the blankets near me.

Throughout, there was no eye contact between him and Jessica.

Now, it was just me and Jessica in the room.

"Jessica, is Darryl still asleep?" I reminded quietly, trying to divert her attention.

"I'll go check on him. Just take your time to eat, call me if you need anything!" Jessica walked out.

Listening to her footsteps gradually fading away, I forced myself to eat a little and then returned to bed, pulling the blanket over me, placing the meal tray on top, and slowly eating.

I had no appetite, but I had to maintain my strength now. I also wanted to be vigilant; there might be surveillance in this room.

In the past, for safety reasons, I had installed surveillance in every room. After all, I had seen too many bad things and had to be cautious.

Initially, Finnegan protested against the surveillance in this room, joking, "There's no privacy at all, aren't you afraid I'll watch our bedroom activities like watching an adult movie?"

But I still insisted, though I only turn on the camera when I'm not around or at specific times.

As time passed, the surveillance in this room was indeed rarely turned on.

I didn't know if there was surveillance active now.

After finishing the meal, as I cleared the tray, I discreetly absorbed the medicine residue with a tissue and quietly flushed it down the toilet.

I played with Darryl for a while and then pretended to be weak, lying back on the bed, continuing to pretend to sleep.

I didn't notice anything unusual, and I couldn't let them see any clues.

To be honest, I didn't notice anything wrong except for Jessica's perfume. However, there were plenty of reasonable explanations for the scent.

But pretending to sleep was really painful. To make it convincing, I didn't dare to move, keeping my eyes closed while constantly thinking about various possibilities and planning my next steps.

Nervously tense and mentally strained, the underlying fear made me extremely agitated. However, I had to maintain a sleeping posture, which was truly excruciating.

I realized at that moment that being awake was more terrifying than being asleep.

Perhaps due to not sleeping all night or excessive tension, combined with my already weak physical condition, I eventually fell asleep, not knowing how long I had endured.

But just as I drifted into a deep slumber, my sensitive nerves alerted me that someone was approaching me.

Chapter 5 The Sharp Pain of Panic
I suddenly recovered consciousness, but I didn't move, still holding my breath with my eyes closed, listening to the footsteps getting closer. I could tell it was Jessica.

My hand under the blanket involuntarily clenched, sweating in my palm.

Although I was lying with my back to the door, I could clearly feel her standing in front of my bed. I felt her subtle breathing and a faint hint of perfume.

"Missus!" she called softly.

I didn't respond or move.

The next moment, her hand slapped my shoulder, the force a bit heavy. Luckily, I was prepared, or she would have known I was pretending asleep.

"You sleep like the dead!"

She muttered, her voice very low, but it poured into my ears like thunder. It was definitely not a compliment, I could completely sense the disdain in her tone.

My thoughts cleared up a bit, it seemed like it really was Jessica.

Before I could confirm this thought, to my shock, a scene of horror that left me no chance to react unfolded. A piercing pain like a stab to the heart shot through my scalp, and I instinctively hummed, almost breaking down.

I forced to conceal it, moving my head slightly to show discomfort, but still in a daze, not fully awake.

But inside, my heart was collapsing to the extreme, overwhelmed with grievances, resentment, and astonishment. Tears welled up, and I clenched my teeth tightly.

Jessica, may I ask, I have treated you like a sister, and yet you treat me like this.

I finally understood. Why this sharp pain had been occurring frequently during this period, piercing and bone-chilling, yet fleeting in my hazy consciousness. I had thought it was an experience in a dream.

Who would have thought it was a cruel trick happening to me in real life, no wonder the pain felt so real, lingering faintly even after I was fully conscious.

Maybe seeing that I still hadn't woken up, next, my face was slapped with a loud sound, "Wake up! Time to take your medicine!"

Her shout was so different from the usual gentle tone, now sounding extremely sinister.

I was completely puzzled at this moment, finding it almost unbelievable that Jessica would treat me like this.

Not until another slap on my face did I realize that continuing to play asleep would be too fake.

I moved my body slightly, whimpering as I took a deep breath, slowly opening my eyes, gazing blankly out the window, murmuring in despair, what happened? How did this seemingly gentle Jessica turn into a wicked nurse?

Once again, Jessica's voice rang in my ears, her tone now back to its extreme gentleness, "Missus, wake up, time to take your medicine!"

"Okay..." I sighed, gathered my wits, turned over slowly, and stared straight at Jessica standing in front of the bed, my eyes misted.

Our gaze met, her smile froze for a moment, then she spoke softly, "Missus, did you sleep well? Shall I help you sit up?"

I didn't divert my gaze, looking at her even more deeply, until she seemed nervous, swallowed, and averted her eyes. Then I sighed in a pretense of distress, saying, "Jessica, I can't help but wonder if I have some sort of terrible illness, and everyone is keeping it from me?"

She glanced back at my blanket, nonchalantly said, "Missus, you are overthinking. You got weak after giving birth. You just need some rest to recover."

"Despite what you say, why do I feel like I'm getting weaker and weaker? I've been sleeping through my days, just two activities – taking medicine and sleeping! It's hard on you, Jessica!"

"Missus, you shouldn't say such things. Taking care of you is part of my job!" she looked at me, "Rest is essential for recovery. Be more patient! Let me go get your medicine now!"

After she finished, she hurriedly left, and as she turned her back, I slowly sat up, staring in the direction she left, touching the sore spot on my scalp. My mind raced, contemplating how to escape this medicine.

While inspecting it, I noticed a touch of blood on my fingertips, faint yet crimson.

I discreetly wiped it away.

Shortly after, Jessica returned with the medicine, handing it to me, "Take it now!"

With a faint "Okay," I didn't reach for the bowl, but instead pointed to the sore area on my head. Then I raised my head to Jessica and said, "Jessica, can you check why it hurts here?"

Chapter 6 The Chameleon Around
I noticed a slight bewilderment in Jessica's expression, her lips twitched slightly before she quickly put the medicine on the bedside table and kindly smiled, "Let me have a look!"

Her smile made me have goosebumps.

I pointed to the painful spot with my finger, "Right here!"

She touched it briefly, pressed it, and pretended to check, "Here? I don't feel anything, how does it hurt?"

I hissed, "Exactly here, it hurts a lot!"

"This area seems fine," she checked other spots, trying to divert my attention.

I sat up straight, feeling the painful area and watching her, "Strange, I always feel like my head is being pierced by needles, it's been happening a lot recently!"

"There's nothing unusual!... It's probably just nerve pain! I sometimes feel a bit off too!" she shared her experience, trying to explain.

Internally cursing her, I thought, what nonsense. I can feel grainy protrusions with my fingertips and the trace of blood I wiped earlier. She boldly claimed there was nothing unusual, clearly taking advantage of me not seeing that spot and feeding me lies.

I suspected it couldn't just be one needle here since this sharp pain had been waking me up, only this time I was clear-headed.

After a while, I put on a pensive expression and casually said, "Oh."

Perhaps feeling guilty, she told me, "Missus, you should take your medicine first. I need to check on Darryl downstairs. He's playing on his own, and I'm worried!"

With that, she turned to go outside, and I secretly sighed in relief. This was what I wanted, as otherwise, she would have watched me take the medicine before leaving.

From last night till now, I hadn't taken the medicine twice, and I could clearly sense that my mind was much clearer, the drowsiness less oppressive, and even the weakness had alleviated. Even my heartbeat had returned to normal.

It seemed that I could no longer take this medicine. I suspected that all my adverse reactions were related to it.

I had to find a way to check what medicine she had given me and what it contained.

Furthermore, I needed to find out if Finnegan knew anything about what was happening to me.

But how should I handle these medicines now?

I looked up at the position where the surveillance camera used to be, and my intuition told me not to take it lightly. I still didn't know why Jessica was treating me this way, what hidden conspiracy lay behind it? There had to be a reason, right?

I needed to find a more secure way to handle the medicine!

As Lucky stretched out its body from under the blanket and cuddled into my arms, I had an idea. I hugged it, showed the medicine, and indeed, Lucky seemed to resist it, swiftly darting away. It appeared highly averse to the medicine.

I placed the medicine back while brushing my clothes.

Then I got up to the bathroom, washed my face, wiped it with a towel, headed for the bedside table, turned my back to the blind spot of the surveillance, tossed the medicine into the trash quickly, and pretended to take the medicine once again.

Nonchalantly, I went back to the bathroom, rinsed the towel, and calmly walked out of the room, heading downstairs.

As I walked serenely, my heart thundering, I had never imagined that one day I would have to do these things in my own home.

At the stairs, I thought I heard Finnegan's voice, and my nose tingled, unconsciously taking quick steps.

It was an instinctive display of dependence on him because, in this house, he was my closest person. Over the past ten years, he had cherished me, showered me with care, and anyone who knew us would attest that he cherished me like a treasure, tenderly looking after me.

I wondered if he knew what was happening to me while I lay unaware on the bed, being manipulated.

The low murmur of men downstairs and Darryl's laughter almost made me burst into tears of helplessness.

Feeling desperate, I hurried down the stairs, and as I lifted my eyes, I froze in place at the unexpected sight before me.

-----------

Due to the word limit, please download Hinovel and search for 23007 in the app to continue reading more exciting content.
I dig through my purse to pull out my phone to call my friend when Superman bumps into me, pushing me forward. My phone bounces across the carpet floor.
“Great.” I bend down to retrieve it when a man dressed in a black and red alien suit with horns sticking out everywhere rams into me, knocking me flat on my hip.
“Watch it, lady,” he says gruffly before walking away The nerve. Does anyone here have manners?
This isn't how my day was supposed to go.
I should be at work—as planned—going over cabinet colors and tiles for a client's half a million-dollar new kitchen remodel. Instead, I'm now getting ogled by a cyclops.
My roommate, Amanda, called me in a panic, telling me she got into a fight with her boyfriend and he left her stranded. So, she asked me to come to pick her up. Supposedly, I was her only option.
What she forgot to mention was she was at a sold-out Comic Con convention. I had to park five blocks away, pay the expensive day rate for parking, and now I have to hunt her down through this insane crowd gathered in the convention hall lobby.
I’m not allowed past the massive doors leading into the convention without a ticket, and I don’t see any sign of my bubbly roommate anywhere. Though it’s hard to make out who is who through the crowd of costumed people. Besides me. Who sticks out like a sore thumb looking more like Lois Lane than Black Widow.
I move to find a safe corner, away from all the chaos, and pull out my phone to call Amanda. “Holly. Hey,” she answers with a chirp on the third ring.
"Where are you?"
"I'm inside the Hilton.”
"Okay? That's where I am." And so are a thousand other people. “ But where are you ?”
"I'm the one dressed as Wonder Woman."
I roll my eyes. "There's literally like a hundred people dressed as Wonder Woman here. What are you doing at a Comic Con anyway?"
"It's a long story. Listen, there's a bar on the lower floor; meet me there.
I’ll be there once I get Will Wheaton’s autograph."
"Alright. You can't miss me. I look like the average Joe among the superheroes. You know, the one who actually needs saving."
"Shut up. You’re fine." Amanda giggles.
"You think if I'm lucky, I can find myself a hot Loki?" I joke.
"If you do, find me his brother. I'll be down in a few once I get through this crowd."
The hotel bar is not as crazy as the upstairs, but I still need to weave myself through the crew of the Enterprise and two Princess Leias to find a seat.
I nestle myself on the stool of the long bar, grab the attention of one of the bartenders, and order a glass of their best mid-priced Merlot.
While I wait, I go through some work emails. I have tons of angry messages from my boss for leaving in the middle of a meeting and a few from the client. Hopefully, if I answer my client’s questions, making them happy, it will lessen the blow with my boss on Monday.
Doubt it though.
"Can I get a whiskey? Neat." A gruff voice comes from beside me, grabbing me away from my email.
A man with a red cape, golden locks, and biceps that should be illegal stands before me.
Well, I might not have found a hot Loki, but I did find his fine brother, Thor.
The bartender pushes a napkin to him as he slides onto the stool.
He hunches over, staring down at the bar looking like he has the weight of the world bearing down on his shoulders. His beard is slightly unkempt, while you can tell the rest of him isn't.
The bartender places his drink down, and he quickly picks it up and downs it. He slams the glass back on the counter and asks for another.
He glances over at me, and my cheeks heat from being caught staring at the Norse god. I’m grateful when my phone beeps with a new text from Amanda, though I can still feel Thor’s eyes boring into me.
Amanda: Brian found me and told me he's sorry. He’s going to take me home. Thank you for coming though. I owe you.
"Seriously," I scoff. I should’ve known. This is so typical of her. She always makes me come out somewhere and then leaves me.
I’m at the bar. You want to come by and say hi?
Amanda: We already left. :(
Are you okay?
I double-check just to make sure she is alright. Maybe Brian pulled her by her hair out the door, but I doubt it.
Amanda: I’m great, I swear. It was just a misunderstanding. You know how I get.
As long as you're okay.
Amanda: Yep. You’re the best roomie ever.
Wow. No thank you?
I stab the power button to turn off the offending screen, pick up my glass of drink, and down it, just like the man beside me did moments ago.
I’m pissed. Beyond pissed. She cost me not only thirty dollars for parking but a day's pay. I should have known it wasn’t that urgent. She and her boyfriend are always butting heads, and then an hour later, they’re making up.
I should’ve waited before coming down here.
The bar fills with more cosplayers, and the energy and excitement of the place builds. Music pipes through the speakers and I hear someone mention karaoke. That could be interesting. So screw it, since I already paid for the day I might as well make my time of it.
I wave down the bartender. “Excuse me, can I get a shot of drink.
Lime and salt. Thanks.”
"Everything okay?" God of Thunder eyes me curiously. “This is a big jump.”
"Umm
" I shake my head. "No. My friend bailed after I came all this way to get her thinking she was deserted."
"Some friend," he snorts. “I know what that’s like.”
"Yeah. I left hours of work and an angry boss to come here." I sigh and lose myself momentarily in the haze of his chocolate eyes. "I'm sure you don't want to hear about my woes." I give a gentle smile.
You look like you have a million problems by just looking into your eyes.
“Let’s just say, you’re not alone in your woes.” He smirks. “I mean, I’m just dressed up as a superhero, drinking alone at a bar. Not a single friend around myself.” He shrugs and wraps his fingers around his newly refilled glass.
“TouchĂ©. I'm Holly, by the way." I brush my shoulder against his in a poor attempt to flirt.
He tilts his head back over to me, his golden wig slipping slightly revealing his brown locks. "That's a very Jolly name." He gives me a crooked smile as his eyes roam over me.
I roll my eyes. "You should really stick to trying to save Asgard rather than making jokes."
"I have always been told I'm bad at making jokes, but what’s the harm in trying."
“Sorry for the delay,” the bartender says, sliding my shot of drink over to me. He lays the lime on the napkin beside it.
“Thanks,” I tell the bartender and then edge in closer to the handsome stranger beside me. “Well, are you going to tell me your name? Or are you going to make me guess? I’m pretty sure it’s not Thor.”
"The name’s..." He looks down at his glass of whiskey then back at me.
"Liam."
"How come you sound so unsure of that?"
"Because
spirits." He gives me a crooked smile, and I giggle. "Hey, I'm improving."
"You are."
"Cheers to that then." He lifts his glass of whiskey, and I raise my shot of drink.
"Cheers." We clink glasses and then toss them back. “Whoo.” I shake my head as the drink burns down my throat.
Liam picks up the lime and places it to my lips. “Suck,” his husky voice croons. My lips wrap around the lime, and I suck the tart juices, my eyes never leaving his as I do so. “I have a feeling it’s going to be a good night, Holly.” He winks, and his thumb brushes across my bottom lip. I pucker against it, and he smirks. “Oh, yes, a very good night.”
The liquor starts to flow between us, and my somber man loses the wig sometime between the fourth and fifth drink. It turns out Liam is actually funny as the night goes on. He has been keeping me in stitches, and the weight he was carrying when he came in appears to be lifting slightly.
I also haven’t felt this relaxed in months.
Never in a million years would I let myself get this drunk in a bar and on top of it all with a stranger.
I have been so worried about following rules, making plans, sticking to my routine, I never let myself be so reckless.
Tonight, I want to break all the rules I made for myself, live a little.
Take a chance, especially with Liam, who has been spending the whole night making me feel like most beautiful woman in the world.
Every brush of his fingers makes my skin ignite, and I’m desperate for more.
“So, what exactly are you doing here alone? I’m sure it didn't start that way for you,” I ask as I roam my finger over his bulging biceps.
“I got left behind too. I thought I was coming here to have fun. I needed it. It’s been a rough
rough couple of months.”
“Do you want to talk about it?” I offer an ear. I can tell he needs it.
Every time he looks down into that brown liquor, I swear he just wants to drown in it.
“I wouldn’t want to bore you with my problems. Plus, we are having fun.”
“You won’t bore me.”
“You’re too sweet to get weighed down with my problems.” He brushes my hair off my shoulder and rests his other hand on my hip.
“I don't mind. I'm a great listener.”
“I can think of something much more entertaining to do than having some heart to heart.”
“Yeah?” My lips wet as he moves in closer to me.
***
The sun rises on the next morning, and I wake up undressed and alone.
Beside me is a note laying on the wrinkled white pillowcase.
I pull the sheet tight to my bare skin and unfold the note. With messy scribble, it reads:
Sorry I had to run and get to work. Room is paid for till 12.
Thanks for a great night. Last night was fun.
-Thor
I crumble up his note and throw it onto the floor.
What did I expect though? I knew what I was getting myself into the second Liam asked me to come up here. I knew he was trouble. My body aches all over, and as I fall back down to the bed, the memories of last night fill my mind. It was all worth it. I shower, dress, and make my exit into
***
Three years later
Music drifts from the garden as I make my way to the deck that overlooks the crowd of mingling socialites, hoping for a moment of peace. I grab my bowtie and yank it loose from my neck. These black-tie events always make me feel as if I'm choking. Money hungry people at every corner nipping at my heels to get a piece of my action. I try to avoid these galas, but I've been forced here against my will by my parents. Though, I know I'm not completely wanted here and only been brought for show. My parents throw these lavish affairs every six months at their estate to make sure their names are always the talk of the elite crowd. It's how it's been since I can remember.
“Champagne, sir?” a pimple faced kid, not old enough to drink himself, offers.
“No,” I grunt, glaring at the kid, who stumbles back, making the drinks wobble. I have an urge to finish knocking them over. “Didn’t they tell you not to bother me?”
“I’m—no—I’m sorry, sir.” The kid tucks his head down and surges away.
I pinch my brow and know it wasn’t the kid’s fault. I doubt my father or mother told the staff not to bother me when it came to spirits beverages.
It’s the one thing I hate about coming to these events; the open bar is only twenty feet away from me. My parents know I'm a recovering addict, and though I've been sober for years, and my main addiction was oxy, spirits was just as much of a crutch to ease my pain. Every day is still a constant battle. Days like today with the stress of a bad couple of weeks rest on my shoulders, and it would be easier to escape in a bottle of whiskey than to deal with the reality.
It’s why I don’t allow myself in these sorts of situations anymore. The temptation where spirits flows freely can be too much.
I swear my old man does this thing to test me, to see if I fail and go back to my ways.
He's always waiting for me to fail.
I've come so far in a short time. I know the dangers I will face if I taste the sweet bourbon.
For now, I tease my mind and rattle the ice in my water glass before I toss it back, letting it chill my bones and pretend it could be something stronger for a second.
I was like a small child, basically trapped in a grown man's body, begging for my dad's approval. Wanting to prove myself to him.
No matter the mountains I pushed or how I succeeded.
It wasn't good enough.
Even after over two years of being sober, when that man storms in, the first thing I think about is drowning, that way I no longer have to hear him.
No longer have to feel.
As I round the corner, my knee is killing me with the sensation of tiny needles being stabbed into it. I stop, needing to catch my breath. A blinking light from above catches my attention. “No , not tonight.” I groan to myself.
Out of all the places, I let my subconscious take me here. The Tilted Keg.
My old stomping grounds. A place I haven’t let myself be outside of in over two years because the temptation is too much. It was the hardest of all my routines to break. Drinking is social. Friends wanting to grab a drink after work and hang out. I had to push back from all of those who didn’t understand the battle I was suffering through. The ones who couldn’t hang with me without drinking.
The smell of wood and stale drink float through the air as the door of the bar opens. For a second, I find myself wanting to go sit in the old place.
Prop myself at the counter with a glass in my hands, hoping what’s inside can take away the demons possessing me by letting me drown them away.
Walk away.
Though when a car door slams, temptation stirs me in a different way.
A beautiful woman draped in red steps out of an Uber and into the night. She wraps her arms around her tight body to fight off the chill of the late evening.
I make out her curves from here, and her flowing strawberry locks dance in the breeze.
I stand watching her. There’s something about her that just catches my eye. Something different from all the rest that calls me to her and draws me in like a moth to a hungry flame, and it has nothing to do with those long tanned legs I’ve already pictured wrapped around me.
I touch her shoulder startling her, her green eyes widen, and her pale cheeks redden.
God , she’s beautiful.
"You look a little lost, Red.”
"No...um...I
No," she stutters nervously.
"Are you okay?" I place my hand on her arm, but she quickly steps back, acting like I shocked her.
"Um, yes, I'm fine," she stammers again, and I chuckle.
Oh Red. What is it about you that captivates me tonight?
Maybe it's the shyness or the wariness in her eyes that has me wanting to sink myself into her so we can get lost together. Or is it because her voice is like a siren's call that captivates me, though it shakes with a nervousness I'm not used to encountering.
"You don’t look fine.”
“I'm just a little chilled." She does have little goosebumps on her arms, but I don’t think it’s just from the cool evening air.
“I know I'm a stranger." I brush back a fallen strand of her hair behind her ear and she shivers in response. "But I promise I don't bite.”
Her whole face flushes brighter than before and there's a glimmer in her eyes that I swear is telling me she likes the idea.
"Why are you blushing, Red? Do you want me to bite?"
She slaps her hands to her cheeks, and I smirk. She's cute.
"You shouldn't be talking that way to me."
"Why not?"
"I don't even know your name."
"Let me fix that then. It's Liam."
"Liam." She repeats in a daze, but I'm confused by why she seems shocked to hear my name.
"Yep. And what about you, Red. You have a name?" LEARN_MORE https://a.read4funs.com/ad/ZmFuY3lOb3ZlbC8xNzE2MDM 149657464895196 ForFun-104 https://facebook.com/61552426861640 67 1 1,148,053,056,475,177 2024-05-08 02:00 person_profile eligible 0 0 NONE 0 0 1 0 Learn more 0 ForFun-104 120210032938490350 a.read4funs.com NONE video https://a.read4funs.com/ad/ZmFuY3lOb3ZlbC8xNzE2MDMvMjAyNDA1MDgwOTE0MTQvcGFnZQ==?adid={{ad.id}} 2024-05-07 20:19 https://scontent-iad3-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/438300040_3386311341667447_7021946944381354131_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_s60x60&_nc_cat=100&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=Wa8c0wvN92AQ7kNvgE8AF9a&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-2.xx&oh=00_AfAhWvNzpYQiOipW8bQ-tLGxHYjqDmb87wChl2XarRbHbw&oe=6641D01F person_profile 0 ForFun-104 https://scontent-iad3-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/440933199_1286277429443793_8245164564187907700_n.jpg?_nc_cat=111&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=KhicxgoE6kwQ7kNvgFx4iTm&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-2.xx&oh=00_AfCSqWMScHhzrUIkYhN8TR3k6Ci1d6lSWI-8f_PlxHfIIQ&oe=6641E077 0 3 ForFun-104 0 0 2024-05-08 02:00 View Edit
