Yes | 2024-04-18 14:46 | active | 553 | 0 | 966048241240318 | ๐ฅ๐ฅ Click to Read ๐๐ป๐๐ป | So ... she'd gone back three years in time?
Now that she's been reborn, the first thiing she wants to do is divorce lan! At first, lan is as cold and disdainful as always. "Don't even dream of threatening me with a divorce. I don't have time for your tantrums!"
After the divorce, Sage's career sets off, and couintless outstanding men surround her. That's when lan loses his cool.
He pins Sage to the wall and says โI was wrong, babe. Let's remarry ..."Sage looks icy.
"Thanks, but no thanks. You are not my type anymore."
__________
"Since you're in such a hurry to die, why don't you just stab yourself and end it? Why go to the trouble of jumping off a building and causing a scene?" A man's voice rang out. It was filled with contempt.
"I wanted to stabโ" Suddenly, Sage Joyner found that something was wrong with what Ian Holcomb had said. When had she jumped off a building?
"You're finally awake, Mrs. Holcomb." The housekeeper, Wanda May, came over with a glass of water and some pills. "Does your head hurt? The doctor said you have minor symptoms of a concussion and prescribed some medication for you. Do you want to take it now?"
Sage didn't answer. She found that she was lying on a bed in a spacious bedroom. From the furnishings, it seemed to be the master bedroom at the Holcomb residence.
She hadn't seen the inside of this place since being sent to a mental institution two years ago. Could Ian have suddenly brought her home?
No, something was wrong.
Sage was certain she'd stabbed herself in the heart. Even if she'd made it out alive, there was no way she hadn't undergone surgery.
She looked down at herself. There weren't any injuries on her chest! Instead, her head and wrist had been wrapped in gauze.
Ian frowned at her, taking in her expression as it morphed from suffering to shock. His patience ran out. "Find yourself a taller place next time if you still wanna jump off buildings. Throwing yourself off the second floor isn't gonna kill you!"
With that, he strode out of the room.
Sage couldn't be bothered about him. She continued to check the rest of her body. After spending two years at the mental institution, she'd become gaunt and haggard. But now, her skin was flawless, smooth, and supple.
Her arms and body were also free from the wounds and bruises the carers and patients at the mental institution had inflicted on her.
"Mrs. Holcomb, Mr. Holcomb was only saying that because he was angry." Wanda thought she was saddened by Ian's words and tried to console her. "Couples don't bear grudges against each other. As long as you talk to him properly, Mr. Holcombโ"
"What day is it today, Wanda?" Sage interrupted urgently. She was still reeling from what had happened.
Wanda gave her a confused look. "It's Ms. Shekdotter's birthday. You heard about Mr. Holcomb celebrating her birthday for her, so you called him to come home ..."
Sage didn't have time to explain despite knowing Wanda had misunderstood her. She quickly glanced around and grabbed her phone from the bedside table. The date was three years ago!
Suddenly, she recalled something. She shot out of bed and ran to the conservatory. As expected, it was a mess. There'd been all sorts of expensive flowers inside, but now, all that was left of them were bald stems.
Three years ago, Sage had been enraged upon hearing that Ian wanted to celebrate Ivy Shekdotter's birthday with her. And when she'd heard about him buying flowers for Ivy, she'd trashed the conservatory in a fit of rage.
The shards of ceramic had cut her on the wrist. She'd ignored the pain and jumped from the second-floor balcony. Though the bushes beneath had cushioned her fall and prevented her from breaking any limbs, she'd still knocked her head against the bricks around the bushes and had fainted on the spot.
So ... she'd gone back three years in time?
"Why are you in the conservatory again, Mrs. Holcomb? There are ceramic shards everywhere; please, don't do anything rash again!"
Wanda was afraid of Sage kicking up a fuss again and followed her, wanting to talk some sense into her. "Mr. Holcomb cares about you. That's why he returned after hearing that you were injured ... Mr. Holcomb!"
Sage looked up when Wanda's tone turned nervous. Ian wasn't the only one walking toward them. Ivy, dressed demurely, was with him. They stood shoulder to shoulder before her, looking like a match made in heaven.
"Haven't you had enough of this, Sage? When will you stop causing trouble?" Ian snarled.
Sage laughed silently. She was his wife, yet he treated her worse than he did an outsider.
But before she could say anything, Ivy said, "Don't be so fierce toward Sage, Ian."
She turned to Sage and explained, "Ian didn't drop by just to celebrate my birthday, Sage. It's just that my father invited him over for a meal because he hadn't seen Ian in ages.
"I didn't expect you to get the wrong idea about this and even get hurt. I feel terrible, which is why I came over to explain the situation to you. Please, don't be mad at Ian anymore. This is all my fault."
Ivy's tone was soft and gentle, as was her smile. Her apology also sounded earnest.
Sage could still remember how Ivy had also followed Ian home in her previous life. She'd given her the same explanation. But at the time, they'd been in the bedroom.
Sage had listened to Ivy's explanation but had been enraged to see them looking so perfect standing side by side. In a fit of rage, she'd screamed at Ivy to get lost and had grabbed a vase from the bedside table and flung it at Ivy.
The vase had hit Ivy in the head, making her bleed and faint. Ian had been furious. He'd immediately lifted Ivy into his arms and taken her to the hospital. Then, he'd stayed there to take care of her for a few days.
From that day onward, they grew closer to each other ...
The words that had enraged Sage in her previous life no longer affected her in this life. She even smiled nonchalantly. "Thanks for explaining everything to me, Ms. Shekdotter. I'm not mad. Your father wanted to have a meal with Ian, right? You guys should get going. Don't keep him waiting!"
Ivy was taken aback, obviously not expecting Sage to react like that.
Even Ian frowned. What was she playing at now? She wasn't kicking up a fuss despite him reprimanding her. She was even telling him and Ivy to go have a meal together. Just two hours earlier, she'd jumped off the balcony because she'd failed to force him to return home.
Did she think she could win his heart by pretending to back down?
Now that Ian understood what Sage was up to, he sneered. Then, he turned to Ivy and said, "Since she's given the green light, let's go."
With that, he turned and left without another look back. Ivy hesitated, told Sage to rest well, and ran after Ian.
Wanda was worried when she saw this. "Mrs. Holcomb, you can't let Mr. Holcomb leave with Ms. Shekdotter no matter how mad you are ..."
"I'm not," Sage said calmly. Now that she was sure she'd traveled three years back in time, she wouldn't make the same mistakes anymore. She wouldn't remain madly in love with Ian, nor would she wait for him to respond to her.
He could do whatever he wanted and be with whoever he wanted. It no longer had anything to do with her. From now on, she only wanted to live for herself and her family!
"I'm starving, Wanda. Could you make me something good to eat?" Sage said.
Throughout her time in the mental institution, she'd only been given a watery bowl of oats daily alongside her medication. It had resulted in her getting stomach cancer. Now, she wanted a delicious meal to compensate herself for everything she'd gone through.
Wanda was surprised. "... Of course. I'll get on it right now."
"I'll go with you!" Sage followed Wanda to the kitchen.
Neither of them noticed Ian standing not too far away. He'd turned back and was watching them with a deep frown. He thought he'd catch Sage throwing a crazed fit upon suddenly turning back. He'd even thought about how he was going to teach her a lesson.
Yet when he returned, he found that Sage wasn't throwing a tantrum at all. She'd even asked Wanda to cook her something!
Why was she suddenly acting so out of character? This had to be a new scheme of hers!
The thought irritated Ian to no end. He turned and left again.
...
After filling her stomach with a scrumptious meal, Sage patted her belly in satisfaction. God, it was the best feeling in the world to be able to have a proper meal!
Even before being starved in the mental institution, Sage hadn't dared to eat until she was full when she'd lived at the Holcomb residenceโshe wanted to maintain a perfect figure so that Ian would like her.
"Ian, I'm five feet and five inches, and I weigh 90 pounds. I checked onlineโeveryone says this is the perfect figure that all models have!"
Sage had been proud of this, but Ian had only given her a cold glance. "What does that have to do with me?"
Indeed, what did it have to do with him? The thought of her starving herself for the sake of a man-made her realize how dumb she'd been.
From today onward, she would eat whatever she wanted and as much as she wanted. She wouldn't mistreat herself anymore!
When Sage returned to her room, she called her grandfather.
Sage's grandfather was the one person in this world who loved her the most. But in her previous life, she hadn't even had the chance to see him one last time when he'd passed away.
This time, she swore to stay by his side until the end of his days and treat him well. She didn't want to disappoint him anymore.
Because of her injuries, Sage didn't dare to visit her grandfather for the time being. She could only suppress her agitation and urgency. She told him she would drop by in a few days.
After hanging up, Sage sat on the balcony and thought about the events of her previous life. When she'd been 18, she'd fallen in love with Ian because he'd rescued her like he was her knight in shining armor. From then on, she'd tried everything she could to win his heart, but to no avail.
When she'd graduated from college, Ian's grandmother, Linda Johnson, had learned of her feelings for Ian. Linda had pushed for Sage and Ian to marry. From then on, she'd become his wife.
Though Ian despised her, Sage had still dreamed of winning his heart one day. This all changed when Ivy had returned to the country and joined Ian's company half a year after Sage and Ian married.
The special bond between Ian and Ivy had awakened Sage's fear of having Ian taken away. She'd started getting anxious and throwing fits. She'd wanted Ian to give her a guarantee.
But nothing she'd done had changed the situation. On the contrary, the fits Sage had thrown and her throwing herself off buildings had only pushed Ian further into Ivy's arms. He'd spent less and less time at home.
In her despair, Sage had given it one last shot. She'd begged Linda to create an opportunity for her and Ian to spend some time alone abroad.
Unfortunately, right before they'd left the country, Ivy had become the victim of a robbery and arson case. She'd almost lost her life. After the perpetrator had been caught, he'd told the world that Sage had ordered him to do it.
Ian had been thoroughly enraged by this. No matter how Sage had tried to explain, he'd insisted on throwing her behind bars. He'd only relented after Sage's grandfather and Linda had intervened.
Still, Ian had insisted on sending her to a mental institution to be "treated" for her mental problems. Then, she'd spent two years there.
Tears streamed down Sage's face as she thought about her previous life. Everything that had happenedโfrom her twisted personality to the jealousy, madness, and suffering she'd been throughโhad all stemmed from her craziness over Ian.
It had ruined her life. Perhaps the heavens had taken pity on her after seeing everything she'd been through and given her another chance at life.
At this point in time, Ian and Ivy had yet to get together, and Sage had yet to go mad. None of those irritational things she'd done had yet to happen.
As long as Sage steered clear of them, she wouldn't end up in the mental institution. She wouldn't get cancer! She could start her life afresh!
...
Sage spent the next three days recuperating at home. The wounds she'd gotten from jumping off the balcony had pretty much healed completely, and she had a steady mental state.
Ian hadn't shown up since leaving with Ivy three days ago. Surprisingly enough, he'd still stay away from home in this life despite Ivy not getting hurt.
Not that Sage cared. She'd already decided to cut Ian out of her life and put an end to this awful marriage. Once everything was taken care of, they would take their respective paths and live their respective lives.
Sage dug out Ian's phone number and called him. It rang for ages, but no one answered. Then, it hit her. She'd almost forgotten about how Ian almost never answered her calls because he didn't want her to bother him.
And so, she texted him. "Are you free now? Bring your identification and the necessary documents so we can head to City Hall and get divorced."
Ian didn't reply to her message. Sage thought he hadn't read it, so she sent it again. Just like before, it went unanswered.
She thought about it and decided to seek him out at Holcomb Corporation. The receptionist recognized her.
After all, after marrying Ian, Sage had made a point of announcing their marriage at the company to ward off any women who were interested in him.
Now, when the receptionist saw Sage, she couldn't help smiling with a hint of mockery. "Sorry, but you'll have to make an appointment if you want to see Mr. Holcomb."
Everyone knew Ian couldn't care less about her and even despised her. Sage didn't let the receptionist's attitude bother her. Instead, she pulled out an envelope. "Please pass this to Ian, then."
With that, she turned to leave. She'd only taken a few steps when she heard the receptionist say mockingly, "I bet it's yet another disgusting love letter. God, she doesn't even know how embarrassing she is!"
Then, she threw the envelope into the trash can.
Sage turned around. "Who gave you permission to throw that away? Pick it back up!"
The receptionist wasn't afraid of her. "Why waste time on that? Mr. Holcomb's not gonna read it anyway. He's told us to throw everything that you've left here for him!"
In the past, Sage worried that Ian would push himself too hard. She would always drop by and deliver little trinkets and snacks to help him destress. She'd even written him letters to convey her feelings to him.
So, this was how he'd treated her care and concern. Even a mere receptionist dared to do whatever she wanted with the things Sage had left!
Sage glared at the receptionist. "Regardless of whether Ian looks at the things I bring, you still don't have the right to throw them away. Now, pick the envelope up!"
The receptionist curled her lip, saying scornfully, "Fine. What's the point of pretending to be the president's wife when you're just clinging to him like the sorry woman you are?"
"Youโ"
"What's going on here?"
Sage was about to make the receptionist apologize when a man's stern voice rang out. She turned to see it was Ian's assistant, Terry Zane. And beside him was Ian, who wore a black tailor-made suit.
He was handsome, and his complexion was flawless. Even with an icy expression, he was charismatic. In the past, Sage's heart would always race, and she would blush when she saw him. She would speak to him shyly and tenderly. Now, she didn't even want to say a word to him.
"Mrs. Holcomb," Terry greeted her politely.
Sage didn't respond to him gleefully as she'd done in the past. From beginning to end, Ian had never acknowledged her as his wife. The fact that Terry had addressed her as "Mrs. Holcomb" was only him being polite.
"What's happened here?" Terry didn't know what Sage was thinking. He repeated his question.
The receptionist glanced at Ian and said in grievance, "Mr. Holcomb instructed us not to accept anything that Mrs. Holcomb brought, but she kept forcing me to deliver an envelope to him. I didn't dare to go against her, so ..."
At that, Ian scowled. He turned to Sage and snarled, "Who gave you the right to boss people around like this?"
Sage said truthfully, "I did nothing of the sort, and I didn't force her to do anything. She threw my things away, so Iโ"
"That's enough!" Ian interrupted her impatiently. "You're the one in the wrong, yet you keep trying to shift the blame. You're beyond rescue, Sage!"
He hadn't even bothered to find out the whole truth before deciding that she was in the wrong. It was no wonder the receptionist had the nerve to frame her. She supposed that in Ian's eyes, she had and always would be a horrendous person.
Sage couldn't be bothered to explain any further. She smiled faintly. "You won't need to bear with me for much longer."
She picked the envelope up from the trash can and continued, "I've drawn up a divorce agreement. Let's go get the divorce settled before City Hall closes for the day."
When Terry heard this, he surreptitiously waved the receptionist away and backed away from them.
"I called and messaged you, but you never answered or replied. That's why I came to the company." Sage handed the envelope to him.
Ian didn't accept it. He sneered. "Is this all that you've come up with after laying low for a few days? Is this some new trick?"
Sage's smile remained in place. "You won't believe me no matter what I say, anyway. The best way to prove my innocence is for us to go to City Hall right now."
Ian's brows furrowed even tighter when he saw her faint smile and emotionless gaze. He'd never seen her like this before.
Sage had shamelessly chased after him for years. She'd pulled all sorts of tricks to marry him. Now, she was demanding a divorce? It was the biggest joke of the century! He bet this was yet another way to attract his attention.
"Since you're in such a rush to head to City Hall, you must have something else lying in wait there for me," Ian said coldly. "Don't you have anything to do other than clinging to me and harassing me?"
To Ian, all of Sage's love and care was nothing more than harassment and trouble. Once again, Sage was glad that she'd woken up from her dream. She pulled the divorce agreement out of the envelope. "Look, you can sign the divorce papers now. At least that'll prove that I'm not harassing you."
Ian's patience ran out as he looked at the divorce agreement. Since Sage wanted to throw a tantrum by demanding a divorce, he would make her wish come true!
"Get me a pen!" Ian barked.
"Mr. Holcomb, Mr. Jones and the others are still waiting for you to sign the contract. It's almost time." Just then, Terry walked over to remind Ian in a low voice.
This was regarding an important business deal Holcomb Corporation had been negotiating for a while. Sage's sudden appearance was causing them to almost be late.
Ian immediately forgot about Sage. He and Terry hurried out of the building.
"Ian!" Sage ran after him.
"Drag her away!" On Ian's orders, a few security guards surrounded Sage.
She knew he was a workaholic; it seemed like there wouldn't be time for them to get the divorce over with today. Sage had no choice but to shout, "I'll see you at City Hall at 9:00 am tomorrow!"
Ian got into the waiting car with a poker face, then sped off without a word.
Did this mean he would be there or not? Sage bet he would. He couldn't wait to be free of her, after all. She relaxed.
When Sage returned to the villa, she logged in to her email account, which she'd abandoned for some time. There were a few job offers from some investment firms. Instead of deleting them like she normally did, she opened them one by one and read them.
All of the offers had already expired. Some of them were from renowned investment firms that many elites in the finance industry would die to get into. She couldn't believe she'd missed out on these opportunities for the sake of a scumbag like Ian!
The mere thought of it made her realize how much she'd lost. In this life, she had to plan her life properly. She couldn't ruin it by losing her mind over a man anymore.
After emailing her rรฉsumรฉ out to a few companies, Sage thought about her and Ian's impending divorce. This time tomorrow, they'd be done. She couldn't help feeling relaxed.
She turned the computer off and started packing her stuff. That way, once she had the divorce certificate, she could leave immediately.
Sage was energetically packing her things when Wanda walked into the room. "Why are you packing your things, Mrs. Holcomb? Are you going on a trip somewhere?"
Wanda was a temporary housekeeper that Ian had hired. To prevent the household staff from spying on them and passing messages to Linda, he'd refused to have household staff from Holcomb Manor work for them.
In her previous life, Sage had been bad-tempered and had constantly caused trouble. Wanda had still treated her relatively well, though. It was just that her best friend had told her Ivy had bought Wanda over. She'd believed it and had made life hard for Wanda on several occasions.
"I'm moving out tomorrow, Wanda," Sage said. She added apologetically, "You've had to bear with my temper while caring for me. I hope you won't take it to heart."
Wanda was surprised. Sage had always been filled with resentment and was quick to fly into a rage. Why was she apologizing so calmly all of a sudden? She couldn't help feeling like Sage had changed a lot since waking up from her jumping stunt.
"You're being too kind, Mrs. Holcomb. I haven't taken anything to heart. But why are you suddenly moving out?" she asked.
Sage said truthfully, "Ian and I are getting divorced. We're gonna get it settled tomorrow morning."
Wanda was stunned. She'd spent less than a year caring for Sage, but she knew very well how Sage felt about Ian. Every day, Sage would rack her brains, thinking of ways to please Ian.
Since Ian liked paintings, Sage had filled the house with famous paintings. And since Ian liked to read, Sage had placed books everywhere in the house, even in the garden. Everything she ate, wore, and used was tailored to suit Ian's tastes. Yet now, Sage was telling her they were getting divorced?
"You love Mr. Holcomb deeply, don't you, Mrs. Holcomb? Why are you suddenly getting a divorce?" Wanda couldn't understand it.
Sage chuckled lowly. "I don't have the energy to love him anymore. That's why I've chosen to let us both off the hook."
Wanda was still baffled by the whole thing. She was about to try to persuade Sage to change her mind when she saw Ian standing in the corridor outside. "Mr. Holcomb, you're back. Have you eaten? I'll whip you up something right now."
Ian said mildly, "No, it's fine. I only came back to collect some documents."
With that, he turned to head to the study. Sage called out to him. "Wait a minute."
Wanda hurriedly said, "Mr. Holcomb, Mrs. Holcomb, I should get to work. I'll leave you two to it."
Once she was gone, Ian looked at Sage coldly and said, "I'm busy, so you'd better have something serious to talk about."
"Don't worry, I'm not exactly free either. I don't have the time to talk about rubbish with you." Sage dug out the divorce agreement from under a pile of things on the table.
She walked over to Ian with it. "I'm gonna have to take up a minute of your timeโsign this. This way, we can get the divorce certificate first thing tomorrow morning."
Ian glanced at her. Earlier, when coming upstairs, he'd overheard Wanda asking Sage why she wanted a divorce. Right from the beginning, he hadn't believed for a second that Sage was serious. But when Sage had answered Wanda, her tone had been relaxed. It hadn't seemed like an act.
Even now, as she held the divorce agreement out, her delicate face was free of makeup, and her clothes were loose and casual. It was completely different from her usual perfectly put-together image.
Had she really come to her senses?
Ian took the divorce agreement doubtfully. Its contents were simpleโbasically, Sage didn't want anything. She would leave the marriage without a penny to her name. She'd already signed the agreement.
She urged, "Hurry up and sign it if you don't have any objections."
Ian glanced at her again. "Are you really willing to get divorced?"
"Of course. The faster, the better! Do you have a pen? I can get you one!"
Ian didn't nod or shake his head. Instead, he handed the divorce agreement back to her.
"What's this supposed to mean? Is there something wrong?" Sage asked. | LEARN_MORE | https://b.mylibapps.com/ad/bm92ZWxXb3JsZC8xNTUzNzI | 128522263674865 | Libb002 | https://facebook.com/61551403614101 | 45 | 1 | 1,068,965,880,867,265 | 2024-04-18 02:00 | person_profile | eligible | 0 | 0 | NONE | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | Learn more | 0 | Libb002 | 120209766547170563 | b.mylibapps.com | NONE | video | https://b.mylibapps.com/ad/bm92ZWxXb3JsZC8xNTUzNzIvMjAyNDA0MTgxODMwMDkvcGFnZQ==?adid={{ad.id}} | 2024-04-18 05:46 | https://scontent-dfw5-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/436253900_802651971752321_2481440827356887377_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_s60x60&_nc_cat=109&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=21tnBC3weOEAb5DL4IJ&_nc_ht=scontent-dfw5-1.xx&oh=00_AfCN0g19wNAXaTwCwdeb7g-0rjRwjE49hVemOSobaVfxCA&oe=662750F5 | person_profile | 0 | Libb002 | https://scontent-dfw5-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/435823590_425885696754063_355013382167852477_n.jpg?_nc_cat=110&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=8pG_Akleeu4Ab6ey-Hh&_nc_ht=scontent-dfw5-1.xx&oh=00_AfA6JkdGJHTj-9Cu4U4azwyJFUzhppKdPHghYQCRTJORHw&oe=6627635A | 0 | 3 | Libb002 | 0 | 0 | 2024-04-18 02:00 | View Edit Delete

I swear I didn't plan or thought of it at first. It just happened." He looked away.
"Two months? You've been making a fool out of me for two months, David?!" Her chest rose and fell with rapid breaths.
"Please forgive me, please Babe."
"I want you to tell her that everything is over between you two... in front of me."
โโโโโโโโ
"The moment I saw you, I knew in my heart that I love everything about you. As I spent more time with you, I realized that I have deeply fallen for you. I promised God and myself that I will never hurt you. Every day of my life I will only spend with you. Your happiness will always be my priority. Loving you forever is my greatest promise. My life will be incomplete without you. Avery Jackson, will you marry me?"
"YES! Yes, David, I will marry you!"
For some, whatever they have may seem too good to be true, but for both of them, finding each other is a dream come true. Everything seemed perfect until the unexpected happened.
Avery couldn't find the word to describe the mixed emotions she felt when she read the message that popped on David's phone. She didn't know if her eyes were fast enough to have read it before the notification faded away or it was the heavens that wanted her to read it. Her body froze, her heart stopped, heavy and painful pounding on her chest dominated. She gasped for air. Her whole body stiffened. It was like any second her head will explode. Every inch of her body trembled. Nauseated, her stomach flipped. She begged her mouth not to vomit. When she heard the bathroom door unlocked, she immediately put back the phone where David originally left before he took a shower.
"Are you okay Babe? What's wrong? You are trembling," David asked, his eyes widened.
"Ah... Um... I need to go to the bathroom. I think I'm having diarrhea." Her steps bolted for the bathroom.
She locked the bathroom door and sat on the tiled floor as her trembling body touched the wall. Her eyes welled with tears.
What should I do? Should I confront him? Since when? Who is she? How? Where? Why?
Strong, piercing and poking burned on her head. Her brain asked all the different questions but failed to find answers to any of them. She pressed her chest slowly and hard, hoping her hand can lessen the pain when she heard David from the outside of the door.
"Babe, are you okay? Do you need medicine? How are you feeling?"
"I'm okay," she answered in a soft voice, hiding her silent cries.
"Do you want me to buy you an energy drink or something?"
"Please... Thank you," her voice crackled.
She burst into tears with her hands placed in between her knees and face when she heard the main door shut. Her whole body convulsed like no end. Is this for real? She denied David is cheating on her. My David will never do that. Maybe the message was wrongly sent? The message wasn't for him?
She went out of the bathroom in a swift motion. It crushed her hope not finding David's phone where she placed it back a while ago. Stupid Ave! No cheating prick will leave his phone behind. She had to think of something. Confronting him can be good or bad. How will I do it? Reality hit her. Her woman's instinct activated. Were there signs? Either she had been so dumb, so trusting, or so in love?
How would I have known the signs?
It's not like there's a manual or a guide for her to know if he is cheating on her.
Maybe David was so good at hiding. She started going back to the past days, weeks, and months. Tears fell again, like on cue the same heaviness and poking in her chest got stronger. But she has to brave all the pains to find the answers. Someone other than David might know. Who else knows?
Self-pity struck her. Do people in the firm know? Am I the last one to know? These are just a few of the questions that popped into her mind. This pain sucks! She wanted very much to confront him, but she's also afraid that she might be wrong. She got the urge to ask people, especially those around him, but she doubted if they will tell her. If people who knew about it want her to know, at least someone should have mentioned it to her already.
"Oh, God! I'm so naรฏve and stupid! David is their boss. Their loyalty is with him of course."
She felt so alone and pitiful. She knew she can get comfort from her family in times like this, but she can't because she still wanted to protect David. What a stupid idea that despite the hurts and pains she still wants him to get on her family's good side.
Am I acting normal right now? She suddenly remembered Shelly, her best friend, when they caught her fiance doing a "mouth-to-mouth" resuscitation with his secretary inside his office. Back then she wanted badly to smack Shelly when instead of telling her parents the truth, she covered the truth to keep the guy's respectable image. Am I being Shelly right now?
What to do, Avery? What to do?
"Babe, are you okay now?" David asked.
"Better I guess."
She didn't realize that he already came back. She watched him as he opened the bottle of energy drink. Her eyes focused on the cellphone that he placed on top of the bedside table. Even without her going near it, she can see that it was on silent mode judging by the number of times the notifications have been lighting on the screen.
"Here Babe drink it. Make sure you don't get dehydrated. Do you need anything else?"
I need you to be honest with me. "Nothing, thanks."
She gulped the drink without taking her sight off David. He looked excited as he grabbed his cellphone from the side table. She watched him as he sat in bed. He was so engrossed in what he was reading; he didn't realize that she glued her eyes to him all along. She felt a lump in her stomach. How his face changed to the same face he had the morning he asked her to be his girlfriend. She saw the same excitement and sweet smile he had for her then. Except that this time she is sure it wasn't for her. Her body trembled again. She placed her hand over her heart. She can't seem to breathe.
NO.
I think my breathing is becoming loud.
Too loud that she unconsciously covered her ears with her hands.
Now I can't seem to hear my heartbeat.
She feels like her heart stopped. She started pressing into her chest. Everything around her blurs. Then there was total darkness and silence.
"Babe! Avery! Wake up!"
David's voice awakened her. Her restless body was in David's arms when she opened her eyes. He was staring at her, worried. She can't find the strength to say anything. She looked into his eyes and silently asked the questions to herself. The questions she can't dare to ask him.
Why David? Why?
"What happened to you? Do you want me to bring you to the hospital?"
I'm fine. I need to be.
"I'll get you water. Stay in bed for now."
Saying nothing, she stood up and trudged to the bed. She saw his cellphone on top of his pillow. It is in silent mode. She sees the call notifications as the phone screen keeps on lighting. The same contact who sent him the message is the same contact calling him right now. She grabbed the phone. 15 missed calls. All from the same contact. She heard footsteps coming near the bedroom door. It's too late. David already saw her holding his phone. He looked at her. She looked at him. They stared at each other.
"Your phone. Someone has been calling you 15 times now."
She looked into his eyes. His eyes avoided hers. He immediately took the phone from her hand. He seemed anxious but didn't look at her.
"It's Jonathan. He's been calling me regarding the recent case. Take a rest, for now, babe. I'll just call Jonathan. Stay here. I'll be back."
She just nodded and watched him as he rushed to get out of their room. The adrenalin and jealousy gave her body the strength to move and run for the door. Quietly, she watched him from the small opening.
His gestures are familiar, bright smile, sparkling eyes.
But one thing is for sure... those sweet gestures, his bright smile, and the sparks in his eyes... this time they're not hers.
Avery was always confident. On top of her class, from elementary to her master's class days. Always gets praised for being young and smart. She knew how to hold an audience of professionals. She was a quick thinker. But this time, this exact moment, she felt like nothing. Worthless. Hopeless. Dumb. Numb.
Her mind overflowed with silent questions. What did I do wrong? Did I lack on something? So many whats and whys. All thoughts that made her doubt herself, her worth.
Sound of footsteps coming awakened her from her thoughts. She immediately went to bed and rested her back on the headboard.
"Babe, will you be alright if I meet up with Jonathan for an hour or two? We badly need to discuss our plan for tomorrow's court hearing."
She looked him in the eye as she wanted very much to ask him.
Why do you have to lie, David?" Do you really have to meet Jonathan at this hour? Where are you really going? Can't you guys just meet early tomorrow instead?"
"You know how is Jonathan, babe. He wouldn't stop calling and texting me unless I meet up with him. That idiot is quite a workaholic and a nerve-wreck!"
Who are you meeting? "Okay," was the only word that came out of her.
She still can't believe that this is happening. That the David who is lying to her face right now is the same David who promised to love her forever. The David for an angel she thought of has turned into a lying monster in front of her. But she can't understand why she's so weak and afraid. Weak to confront him and afraid to get an answer she might not want to hear.
"I have to go, Babe! I'll try to be back as soon as I can."
Like in a dream, everything was floating and blurred. She just realized he already left after hearing his car revving out loud and fast from the garage.
I am not expecting this. It's just six months after we got engaged. We just confirmed a schedule to meet with the wedding planner yesterday.
She stood fast and looked for her phone, and dialed. "Hello! Jonathan speaking."
"Hey, Jonathan! This is Avery. I just wanted to know what you and David have scheduled for tomorrow? I wanted to surprise him for his birthday and secretly work on his schedule with his assistant tomorrow."
"Avery, hey! Oh, we don't have any case right now. The last time we worked together was before your engagement. I wished we have a case together. It's so easy to work on a case with your man Ave!"
"Uh... Oh... I know... How's Izzy? the kids?"
"Well, Izzy is in the province with her mom right now. I'm on leave for three days because I'm stuck here at home babysitting the kids! Daddy duties!"
"So sorry to have bothered you, Jonathan! peck the kids for me and tell Izzy I said hi."
"I will Ave! Send my regards to your man! Goodnight!"
"Goodnight Jonathan!"
In silence, her tears started flowing like waterfalls. Everything in her body ached. Her heart pierced and broke into million pieces. Her imaginations worked. David driving fast, excited to meet his "Jonathan." She suddenly saw their engagement picture. As she holds the heart-shaped frame, she can't help but remember that day. Her heart was full of happiness and love. She and David looked so in love. Their eyes were sparkling, and he was holding her hand, showing the engagement ring, which was an heirloom passed down from his grandmother to his mom and now to David for her.
When Avery felt him slowly getting on his side of the bed, she prayed for him not to notice that she was awake. He went to bed under the impression that she was in a deep sleep. He was unaware that she was just observing him all along. In a matter of fifteen minutes, he cleaned the broken glass, sneaked in a shower, and placed his clothes in the washer.
Avery wanted very much not to cry, knowing that David is just in the other room, but her eyes have a mind of their own. She looked around and saw their engagement picture in a replaced frame the sobbing was a powerful force she can't fight anymore. She wished that one can easily replace broken relationships, like when broken frames were replaced with new ones.
"What is wrong, babe? Why are you crying?"
Avery froze knowing that David is now standing behind her. If he sees her face and she sees his, her tears will betray her. She hoped David will leave her and not insist to get an answer. But maybe, just maybe, or she was hoping against hope that everything is just a misunderstanding and that David is still the same David. The same who promised to love her forever and the same who she still loves despite.
The crying she was trying so hard to keep to herself turned into loud and continuous sobbing. Avery can't control her emotions anymore. When David put his arms around her and then made her slowly face him, she lost it all.
"What is happening Ave? Why are you crying? Did something happen?"
Seeing David's concerned expression made her forget he is looking at the person who has been hurting him for weeks now. She placed her arms around him and cried harder. "I'm so in pain right now David."
"Tell me, Babe, what's going on? Which is hurting? Why?"
"My heart is hurting... in so much pain for weeks now." She told in between sobs and tears.
As he wipes her tears with his fingers, he kept asking her questions, unaware of what she is about to say. "Is there something wrong with your heart? Did the doctor find something?"
"No. But I discovered something. It has been causing me pain, it's been killing me every day."
"You're making me worried now, babe. Tell me, please." He motioned her towards the bedroom bench. As they sat together, he clasped his hand with hers.
Avery, feeling hopeful, felt that this might be her chance to confront him. She decided it's now or never. "We need to talk."
"Okay Babe, talk to me. Tell me everything."
"Who is she?"
"Who? What do you mean she?"
"Please be honest with me, David. At least as a friend. Who is the woman you are cheating on me with?"
David's face fell. His breathing turned heavier and louder. The warmth that his hand was giving hers turned ice cold. And as he removed his hand from hers, he immediately brushed both of his hands through his hair and looked down. Dead silence enveloped the room. Avery knows this is their chance to lay everything down. As painful as it may be, the only way to know the truth is to get answers from him.
"I knew it from the night I blacked out. She didn't ask him a question this time. I unintentionally read the message she sent you. I knew you didn't meet with Jonathan. You didn't have any reason to meet him at all."
"Ave you know I can't lie to you."He looked her in the eye, guilt reflected.
"But you did." If there is one thing that Avery learned as a paralegal that is interrogating without asking. "I called Jonathan right after you left that night. He doesn't have any clue. Izzy was in her province that night, no way for her to tell you to say hi to me."
"Babe, I'm sorry." He cupped her face, looked directly into her eyes. She didn't stop him. The tears and the sobbing stopped. She felt braver, empowered seeing his sorry and admitting face.
"Who is she? Tell me, what did I do wrong? What did I not do?" She removed his hands from her face.
"There is nothing wrong with you, babe. It wasn't you, it was me. I was stupid! I'm sorry Ave."
David lowered his head."I'm sorry Ave." He said the three words she regretted hearing. For the past weeks, she had been agonizing over herself to know the truth. She didn't realize that hearing the truth from him will be a thousand times more painful than how she has been feeling all along.
Truth sucks. Truth hurts. Truth is real. These were the only things that echoed on Avery's mind. She values honesty all her life, but she wished that David should have just lied to her face again. The confirmation she had been longing to get from him didn't just hurt her wounded heart more. It pained, it cut, and it stabbed her already bleeding heart.
"Ave, I'm really sorry. I know there is no excuse for what I did."
She took in a deep breath. "Who is she? Since when?"
"You don't know her. She is a client's assistant. We met a little over two months and it was an accidental hook-up. I swear I didn't plan or thought of it at first. It just happened." He looked away.
"Two months? You've been making a fool out of me for two months, David?!" Her chest rose and fell with rapid breaths.
"No Babe! Believe me. The night I told you I was to meet Jonathan, I went to meet her. I ended everything with her. Please believe me Ave!"
The memory of that night flashed back to Avery. David's sweet gestures, his bright smile, and the sparks in his eyes... she wouldn't forget that picture of him reading messages on his phone. David may lie to her, but not to her heart. His face then didn't show an inch of a man about to end everything with the woman whose message he was reading.
Her mind told her not to believe and not to forgive David is the most reasonable decision. But her heart reminded her he's asking for forgiveness should put her at ease, that he is deserving him a second chance. "After you confirmed David is really cheating, what do you plan to do?" She heard Shelly's voice as if she was just beside her.
"Ave please say something. Please forgive me, please Babe."
What should I do with you, David? Avery felt weak to even say a word. She just stared at David. If only her eyes have sharp arrows flying out of them, she would have surely hit his body bulls-eye slowly but fiercely. And she remembered what she told herself. She wouldn't be in his game without a fight.
"Ave, tell me what I need to do for you to forgive me, please."
"I want you to tell her that everything is over between you two... in front of me." | LEARN_MORE | https://b.choicesnovel.com/ad/Y2hlcnJ5ZmljdGlvbi8x | 180082355186412 | Cho007 | https://facebook.com/61554153264844 | 1 | 1 | 951,352,902,968,291 | 2024-04-18 02:00 | person_profile | eligible | 0 | 0 | NONE | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | Learn more | 0 | Cho007 | 120210926858460397 | b.choicesnovel.com | NONE | video | https://b.choicesnovel.com/ad/Y2hlcnJ5ZmljdGlvbi8xNTMwMjkvMjAyNDA0MTcxNDU5NTIvcGFnZQ==?adid={{ad.id}} | 2024-04-17 02:03 | https://scontent-dfw5-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/435880850_805958318070527_828406932875526737_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_s60x60&_nc_cat=109&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=of0JxkmdwqsAb50UvB5&_nc_ht=scontent-dfw5-1.xx&oh=00_AfBkRmh1pT4rfLseVEl6kjkiZvMeTHmO1LRTufEdYKtxqQ&oe=662762DC | person_profile | 0 | Cho007 | https://scontent-dfw5-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/436259889_904570301469388_8260263725183015998_n.jpg?_nc_cat=100&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=4F8Uq5PFp7AAb6RUCyU&_nc_ht=scontent-dfw5-2.xx&oh=00_AfD56btWDfV8WKs0XvNjeZmvHTfqxP6a61zBpZI4stj8IQ&oe=66274C21 | 0 | 3 | Cho007 | 0 | 0 | 2024-04-18 02:00 | View Edit Delete

๐ฒ"A thrilling shifter story I couldn't put down!" | Abi was on the other side of the bar, pulling chairs down from table tops. It was Friday, so I was thankful for the help in getting the place ready for the evening rush. It would have taken me an hour if I had to do it on my own.
โHey, Maddy? Do you want these tables moved farther apart?โ Abi asked.
I stopped wiping the bar top and glanced over. โNo, you can leave them where they are. It should be fine.โ
โOkay, cool.โ She flipped the last chair over, set it on its legs, and then slid it under the table. Iโd moved behind the bar to start polishing the wine glasses when she came over and slapped her hands on the bar. โHoly crap, did I tell you I got my results back?โ she asked.
I stopped mid-polish and looked at her with a raised eyebrow. โResults? What kind? STD? Pregnancy? SAT? What?โ
She rolled her eyes. โDonโt be a jerk. No, the DNA ancestry thing I sent off a few weeks ago. Remember?โ
I did remember. The main thing I remembered was her hyperventilating before swabbing her cheek. Weโd done it at her house, and I thought she was actually going to pass out when she saw the blood.
โI do. What did it say?โ
โWell, I know youโll be shocked, but Iโm seventy percent Irish.โ
I glanced up at the bright red hair braided down her back and the bright green eyes twinkling with excitement and shrugged. โNo way. I was sure youโd be Argentinian or maybe Japanese.โ
โVery funny. Though, I did get a fun little surprise. Iโm one percent West African.โ
โUgh.โ I rolled my eyes toward the ceiling. โI really hope that doesnโt mean you had some terrible slave-owning ancestor who liked to take advantage of the people heโd enslaved.โ
Abiโs face fell and she tilted her head. โWell, damn. I hadnโt thought of that. I kinda hoped my great-great-great grandma fell in love with some handsome mysterious man while on a sailing trip or something.โ
โLetโs go with that. Much less depressing.โ
โYou should do it, too,โ Abi said.
โWhat? Sail around the world and fall in love with a mysterious man? Deal.โ
โNo, dummy, the ancestry thing. We can order a kit today. Itโll be here in no time. It doesnโt just tell you about your lineage, it also tells you if there are any diseases youโre susceptible to. Itโs pretty interesting. Iโm apparently twenty percent more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis than the average person. Yay, me. Plus, I found three cousins I didnโt know I had. I already friended one on social media.โ
The idea gave me a little flutter of anxiety. Finding out about genetic things did intrigue me. Being adopted, it would be nice to know if I had a higher risk of diabetes or heart disease, and would give me a head start on preventing things like that. But finding out about my birth family? That was more nerve-wracking.
When my parents had finally told me I was adopted, Iโd gone through a full-on identity crisis. Who was I? Was my entire life a lie? Why did my biological parents give me away? All the things a young teenager would flip out about. It took about a year for me to come to terms with it. My mom and dad were the people whoโd raised me from birth, and that was all I needed to know. Iโd given up thinking about my birth parents a long time ago. The thought of stirring all that up again was mildly disturbing.
โI honestly donโt care much about my heritage,โ I said.
โOkay, sure, but what about knowing ifโฆI donโt knowโฆif whatever kids you someday have might have cystic fibrosis or if youโre more likely to get breast cancer? Doesnโt that interest you?โ
It did, I had to admit that. I thought about it for several seconds as I finished polishing the last wine glass and started on the beer steins. I already had chronic anemia, for which I had to take supplements. What else could be lurking in my DNA? I didnโt plan on having kids anytime soon, but knowing they might have some genetic anomaly before I ever got pregnant was always better than finding out last minute.
โOkay, if I did do this thing,โ I said, โhow would I get a kit?โ
Abi clapped her hands. โYes! Iโm so excited. Oh, what if we find out weโre cousins or something?โ
โThe kit, Abi? How do I get one?โ I asked, ignoring her comment.
โHang on.โ She pulled her cell phone out. โIโll send you the link.โ
My phone pinged a few seconds later, but I left the text unopened. There was too much to do to get ready for the night. We finished prepping the bar before the first customers started to roll inโmostly regulars whoโd just gotten off work. The night was way busier than Iโd anticipated, but it was all good. People had made fun of me for getting a business degree only to turn right around and open a bar instead of going into corporate America, but I was pretty sure I made more than a lot of people my age. Twenty-eight and making over six figures a year? Iโd take the busy and late nights. It was a pretty damned good trade-off.
Last call was at two in the morning, and by 3:30, I had everything cleaned up and the place locked. By four, Iโd crashed at home and sleeping like the dead.
The next day, I rolled over in bed and grabbed my phone, the time on the screen showing it was noon. I saw Abiโs message with the link to the ancestry site and stared at it for a few seconds, debating. I was still nervous about what I might discover. Whatever diseases I might be at risk for was not as scary as finding out about the people I had come from. Iโd never been able to find any information about my birth parents. Would I find out they were serial killers? I chewed at my lip, thinking.
โScrew it,โ I said, and clicked the link.
Less than five minutes later, Iโd purchased a kit. The company was based in Florida, and only a two-hour drive from where I lived here in Clearidge. It said I was eligible for free one-day shipping. Iโd have it the next day. I put it out of my mind and went about my business the rest of that day and night.
Abi was at my place having lunch the next afternoon when the package arrived. I brought it in from the mailbox, and when she saw it, her eyes lit up. โIt came. Nice. Letโs do this,โ she said, putting her sandwich down.
โDo we really need to get a wad of spit out of me while weโre eating?โ I asked.
โOh, come on, we were done anyway. Whip it out.โ
โIsnโt that what you always tell your boyfriends?โ
โVery funny. You know what I mean.โ
I cut open the box and pulled out all the items. It was pretty cut and dry. I poked my finger, put a drop of blood on a little cardboard sample card, and packed it back up. โIs that all?โ
Abi nodded. โThatโs it. Just put that baby back in your mailbox and raise the little red flag. Are you excited?โ
I shrugged, trying to hide my anxiety. โI donโt know, maybe.โ
โWhat are you going to do if you have any DNA matches?โ
That was the very thing freaking me out. Instead of directly answering her question, I told her Iโd be right back and took the box out to the mailbox. Once I got back inside, it was easy to change the subject. The truth was, I wasnโt totally sure what I would do if there were matches. I had no idea why Iโd been given up for adoption. My adoptive parents had told me the adoption agency had no information about me. All they knew was that a guy claiming to be a social worker had brought me in as a baby. He told them he knew my parents and they didnโt want to be involved in the adoption process or have their names put down. The problem, my dad had told me, was once the agency looked into the social worker, they couldnโt find any trace or record of him.
That story had always haunted me. Had I been kidnapped? Or had they truly wanted to get rid of me? My parents didnโt even have my original birth certificate. Theyโd found the hospital Iโd been born at, but my birth motherโs name had been registered simply as Jane Doe. All of it had pointed toward my birth parents being less than trustworthy. Why in the world would you not put your real name down when having a baby? The only thing I had from my birth parents was my name. The mysterious social worker had told the adoption agency my name was Maddison.
Thoughts of the test came and went over the next few weeks as I waited on the results. The website said it could take up to a month to receive them. A few weeks later, Abi asked again if Iโd received the results.
โNo, again, for the five hundredth time,โ I said with a groan. I was starting to get more irritated each time she asked.
โSorry, sorry. I just like stuff like this. I get excited. Oh, you never answered when I asked what youโd do with any matches. Are you gonna stalk them on the internet? Friend-request them?โ
The thought that my very existence could spell disaster for someone had started to rear its head. What if my birth parents had only been kids and given me up so they could go on with their lives? What if they had their own families now? Would shoving my nose into everything upend their entire lives?
I didnโt blurt out what I was thinking. Instead, I took the safe route. โI donโt know. Iโll wait to see what the test says and go from there.โ
Fate didnโt force me to wait long. My phone chirped a few hours later with a text that let me know the results were ready. I didnโt open the email, though. My fear and anxiety spiked as soon as I saw the message.
I called Abi to let her know and see if she could come over. She was, of course, beyond excited about it and was at my place in less than twenty minutes.
I had my laptop open, the email link to the test ready. Abi walked in and pointed to the screen. โAll right, sister, letโs see it.โ
I took a breath and opened the link. The first couple of pages explained what the company had done and also assured me that my DNA wouldnโt be shared or sold to outside companies. Finally, I pulled up the page with possible genetic markers for disease. Thankfully, there were none, except a negligible chance of developing irritable bowel syndrome at some point. Ugh, pleasant reading.
The next page brought up possible DNA matches. It was the one I was most excited and nervous to see. But the results were less than enlightening.
โSeriously?โ Abi said, sounding dejected.
The only match was for some guy whoโd lived nearly three hundred years ago. I didnโt even know how they had any DNA from the guy to match me, but there it was. I leaned back, sighing in both relief and disappointment.
โI had like thirty different people matched to me,โ Abi said. โMost were distant, though. I canโt believe you only have one. Thatโs crazy.โ
โYeah. Oh, well. We canโt all have slave-owning rapists in our family tree,โ I said, nudging her.
โHey, donโt be a jerk. You canโt choose your ancestors.โ
โRight. Letโs go, we need to get the bar ready.โ
It was another Friday night, and my mind rested a little easier than it had the last few weeks. It was a relief to know I didnโt have to make some big life-altering decision to contact a stranger and let them know I was their daughter. For the first time in weeks, I was able to enjoy my job without that weighing on me.
It was another busy night, and I was helping tend the bar because our normal two bartenders were having trouble keeping up. It was good for me, though. It kept me knowledgeable about cocktails and wine. It was difficult owning a bar without being in the know.
I was handing a couple of college kids some beers when Abi nudged me and nodded toward the door. โWe got a crew of shifters coming in.โ
I glanced up and saw the guys she was talking about. You could always tell the shifters from the humans. There wasโฆsomething about them. I couldnโt even describe it, but it was obvious. I wasnโt a bigot like some people. Iโd never had any trouble from shifters and they were welcome at my place. All they wanted was some good bar food and good boozeโboth of which I could provide.
I nodded. โYep, I see them,โ I said.
The guys, about a half dozen of them, made their way across the bar to an open table near the jukebox. One of them glanced in my direction and made eye contact. I forced myself not to roll my eyes. His face changed when he saw me, and then he changed course to come to the bar. I couldnโt even count the number of times Iโd been hit on in the years Iโd owned the place. I was well-acquainted with the look he was giving me.
He bellied up and nodded to me. โHey. Can I get a beer?โ
At least he hadnโt led with a pick-up line. I nodded. โSure, what kind?โ
He shrugged and gave an easy smile. โWhatever you recommend. Youโre the professional.โ
โFair enough,โ I said, turning back to the line of beer taps. Iโd made sure to have a cool and eclectic selection of beers when I opened the bar. I had almost two dozen options. I went right for my favorite: a micro-brew made by a couple friends of mine a few towns over. It had hints of orange and wasnโt too hoppy. I slid the glass across the bar to him but held it back just out of reach. โIโll need to have your ID.โ
He grinned. โYeah, sorry.โ He pulled it out and slid the license toward me. I checked the birth date, even though the guy was obviously over twenty-one, and slid the ID back. I pushed the beer the last foot over to him.
He caught it and took a sip. He furrowed his brows and looked at the glass. โThatโs really good. Nice choice.โ
I had a hard time not succumbing to his charm. He was cute and had a great smile, but I knew how these things usually went. I only nodded and took a couple of orders from some people beside him. Once I was free again, he waved me back over.
โAnother round?โ I asked.
He shook his head. โHow long have you lived here?โ
โSorry, big guy, no personal info. I can do alcohol and maybe some hot wings from the kitchen if you want to ask for some of that.โ
He looked back across the room to his friends, who were all watching us. Most had their eyes on me. I wondered if heโd made a bet with his buddies on whether heโd be able to get my number. Turning back, he nodded at his glass. โOkay, house rules. I get it. Iโll take another.โ
I filled another glass for him, and he went back to the table with his friends. I glanced over and they all seemed to be in deep discussion. Some of them looked pissed. I figured they were having a guysโ quarrel. As long as it didnโt escalate into shouting and fists, they were free to do as they pleased.
The same guy came back a few more times throughout the night. Each time was pure business. A pitcher of beers for his guys, then a big order of fried chicken sliders from the kitchen. Normal stuff, except that he only wanted to deal with me. Heโd wait an extra ten minutes if I was busy. He completely ignored Abi, who tried to get his order and was being pretty obvious that sheโd like to do more than just pour him a beer.
Toward the end of the night, he came up to settle his tab. I took his card, and while I was ringing him up, the question Iโd been waiting for all night finally came up. โOkay, Iโll finally stop bugging you if you just give me your name.โ He held up a finger. โAnd before you say it, a name isnโt personal information. Itโs not private or secret. You can at least give me your name.โ
I chuckled and rolled my eyes. โOkay, fine.โ I put my hand out to shake. โMaddison Sutton. My friends call me Maddy.โ
He shook my hand and smiled that gorgeous smile again. โGood to know.โ
He turned without another word and started walking toward his friends, who were gathering at the door.
โHey, donโt I get your name?โ I shouted after him.
He looked over his shoulder as he headed out the door. โNext time.โ
I watched the group go, thinking it was the strangest interaction Iโd ever had. Usually, when you brushed off a guy, one of two things happened. One, they got butt-hurt about it and turned into pouty little incel turds. Two, they didnโt take no for an answer and kept pushing until I had to be a jerk about it.
This was a refreshing change of pace. Maybe, just maybe, if he came back again, Iโd entertain the idea of giving him my number. If he asked for it.
The bar slowly started to empty, and I didnโt even have to make the last call. The final patrons were out before two. The bartenders got most of the place clean, and they and the kitchen guys were out by three, which left just Abi and me. I needed to mop the bathrooms and restock the paper towels, soap, and toilet paperโa twenty-minute job at best.
โHey, Abi? Go on home. Iโve got this.โ
Abi yawned and rubbed her eyes. โYou sure? Iโm good to stay and help.โ
โItโs all good. Iโll see you tomorrow.โ
โOh my God, thanks. Iโm so damned tired. Iโll call you in the afternoon for breakfast.โ
โYou mean lunch?โ
Abi shrugged a shoulder as she walked out. โCall it what you want. Whatever I eat after I roll out of bed is breakfast. Even if itโs two in the afternoon.โ
I laughed and waved as she left. The rest of the closing stuff went by pretty quickly. It was kind of nice to have the place to myself and allow myself to zone out and decompress. All that was left to do was empty the under-bar beer glass cleaner. Iโd worry about polishing the water spots off the next day.
While I was bent over taking the glasses out, I heard the front door of the bar open. Hell, I hadnโt locked it after Abi left.
โWeโre closed!โ I called out, still pulling glasses out.
I could hear a multitude of boots thumping across the wood floor of the bar. I hissed a frustrated breath out through my teeth. Standing, I shouted, โI said weโreโฆโ
I trailed off when I saw whoโd come in. It was the guy from earlier in the night. The shifter. And heโd brought all his friends back. A knot of fear cinched tightly in my gut when I saw their faces. All of them, including the guy who Iโd thought had been flirting with me, looked pissed. Like, ready-to-kill pissed. The worst part was the fact that they were all looking at me. Like Iโd made them mad.
Trying not to let my fear show, I cleared my throat. โSorry, guys. We closed over an hour ago. If you want service, youโll have to come back tomorrow night.โ
Ignoring me, the guy Iโd been talking to stepped up to the bar and slammed his palms down on it. The impact reverberated through the bar like a gunshot. โYou shouldnโt even exist.โ
I took an involuntary step back, shocked by the disgust in his voice. He was looking at me like I was a smear of dog poo heโd found on his shoe. What the hell had happened in the last two hours? The jovial, charming grin was gone. All I saw now was the curled lip of loathing.
He looked back at his boys. โSmell that? Was I lying?โ
The rest of his friends shook their heads, one of them sniffing at the air and making a deep, throaty growl. Cold sweat slid down my back, my eyes darting around at all the other men. None of their faces showed the slightest hint of compassion. Some had even moved to the ends of the bar, cutting off any escape I might have had. My breath started to hiss in and out my nose in panicked bursts. What was about to happen to me? Robbery? Murder? Gang rape followed by robbery and murder? A thousand nightmare scenarios flashed through my mind.
The shifter leaned forward, getting as close as the bar would allow. โYour bloodline should have been completely wiped out. The whole lineage was supposed to be dead. It looks like some of that tainted blood slipped through the cracks.โ
I bumped into the shelf of liquor behind me. A bottle of tequila and a pint of whisky fell off the shelf, shattering onto the floor. The pungent aroma of alcohol burned my nose. What the hell was he talking about?
โI donโt know what you mean,โ I said, my voice uncharacteristically low and quiet.
He shook his head and spat on the ground. โDoesnโt matter. Youโll be dead soon enough. Go.โ
At the word, his men leaped to action. They moved so damned fast, I could barely register what was happening. Blurs of motion, screams and growls, the shimmering, angry flash of their red eyes. The last thing I remembered was a searing pain in my sides, followed by an explosion of pain at the back of my head. After that, everything went dark.
Chapter 1 of The Alpha's Fated Encounter. Yes | 2024-04-18 14:47 | active | 553 | 0 | 1522961688259623 | Read More | He married her to save his beloved, and cruelly used her, breaking her heart. After their divorce, he realized in anguish that he had been mistaken all alongโhis true love had always been his ex-wife.
======

Chapter1 The truth about marrying her
"Tammy, I'm sorry I hurt you." He stroked her soft hair and murmured.

Tammy's scarred face hung with tears, and her tiny, naked body lay shivering in the strong man's arms. She was too shy to look up at him.

Today was her wedding night. Just now, she ended the transformation from a girl to a woman.

The man holding her in his arms at the moment was her husband Angus, a man could drive all women crazy.

She had loved him for fifteen years.

In the darkness, Angus stared at the little woman in his arms. His deep black eyes contained a coolness that was hard for others to guess.

Tammy shook her head gently. Her face blushed.

Although he was gentle, the pain was inevitable because it was her first time.

However, she was happy enough that he didn't mind the scars on her face and that she was a poor little girl who had been living in exile for ten years.

There was a ding, and his phone rang.

Angus took the phone, looked at it, frowned, turned his head and said, "Tammy, I'm going out for a few minutes and I will come back soon. Wait for me."

He bowed his head and gently kissed on her forehead.

Angus switched on the light and got out of bed, tucking Tammy in and picking up a robe from the side and putting it on.

Tammy watched as he left the room.

Without his embrace, she was suddenly lost. She gripped the blanket restlessly at her chest. Her thin shoulders were out of the quilt, and they were covered with the marks of their love and affection.

A few minutes passed and he didn't return. Tammy's loss grew stronger and stronger.

She put on her pink nightgown and picked up the heart-shaped pendant carved from the wood on the bedside table and put it around her neck.

It had been given to her by her mother before she died, and although it was worthless, she had worn it since she was a child.

The pendant always soothed her anxious emotion.

Tammy left the new house with a sweet smile on her face to find her husband.

In the hallway, there was a sudden sound of talking.

"Tammy's kidney was successfully paired with Sonia, and marrying her was just a way to get her to sign a consent form for the donation."

It was Angus's voice. It was extraordinarily familiar to her, but it hurt her so much for a moment. His words were like a thunderbolt exploding in her head!

Tammy's face went suddenly pale. Her hands clenched in fists, gripping the skirt of her nightgown so tightly that her whole body was as stiff as a stone. She seemed to have lost half her life.

In the back of her mind, the words he'd said when he'd asked her to marry him emerged...

"Tammy, you are a good girl, and I have no reason to marry any woman but you... "

But then those words were like heavy slaps in her face!

Tammy's kidney was paired with Sonia's and marrying her was just to get her to sign the donor consent form-...

Tammy covered her mouth and shivered.

She'd never agreed to donate her kidney, and she'd thought he'd married her because he loved her.

But it turned out that he was the one who was going to trick her into donating a kidney for the woman he loved!

The familiar figure not far away was as grand and tall as a king, with an elegant aristocratic air. Although the first time had only just been given to him, at the moment he was so strange to her!

At this time, there came another voice with some flattery: "Oh, so that's it. Young Master Smith, why didn't you say so earlier. I thought you had let Sonia down. After all, she loves you so much, and you married Tammy as soon as she fell ill. It's hard for her not to think too much. Tammy is so vicious that she won't donate her kidney to save her sister. And you're the only one who can control her!"

Chapter2 So it's all a trick
The speaker was Tammy's stepmother, who was named Sue.

When Tammy was nine years old, Sue was brought home by her father along with her sister who was older than Tammy. That girl was also her father's biological daughter.

In other words, not long after her father and mother got married, he already had had an affair with another woman and had a daughter outside.

At the time, her mother was already suffering from depression due to the hardships she had had in the marriage. And as a result, the incident completely overwhelmed her, causing her to become more and more mentally ill. Finally, her mother desperately tried to throw her out of the car window in a major car accident, while she was burned to death in the car.

By the time her body was taken out, it was all charred...

Tammy was only ten years old...

Her mother was killed by Sue and her daughter, and her face and life were ruined by them.

And now, they had joined forces and wanted her kidney!

How could they be so bad? How could they do this to her?

What did she do wrong?

Tammy's tears rolled down like a river that had burst its banks!

Angus, did you know that I've remembered you since I was five years old!

But I loved you so much, and you trampled on my affection like this!

His cruelty shattered all her hopes, and her world fell into obscurity.

She thought she'd made it, but when the fog had lifted, she found that the destination she'd been running to wasn't heaven, but hell!

Tammy gritted her teeth desperately and ran away back to her room!

Angus's eyes were deep and dark. His voice had turned cold, "Tammy's kidneys can only be used when it's necessary."

When he possessed her tonight, she was shaking all the time. She was so thin and fragile, so how could she carry the kidney removal surgery.

When Sue heard this, she was immediately unhappy, but she didn't dare to show her anger, "Young Master Smith, what do you mean? Didn't you say you'd let her donate her kidney before marrying her? But why did you go back on your word?"

Angus frowned and said sternly, "I have no regrets. If another suitable kidney is found before the operation, I will divorce her."

Divorce.

The thought of these words seemed to hit him hard heavily.

Sue was about to say something else. Suddenly Angus paled and said indifferently, "Go away and don't let Tammy doubt you."

His tone was full of strong command that made Sue pale!

Although she had decided that she was Angus's future mother-in-law, she still shivered, not daring to say anything more. She turned away but a light flashed in her eyes.

She would never let Tammy go!

......

Tammy huddled in the corner of the room with her arms wrapped around her, shivering.

Angus came in, and found no one in the room. He searched around, and suddenly noticed the curtains trembling faintly.

He lifted the curtains and saw Tammy sitting on the floor, hugging her knees as if she was in some kind of shock. Her face was pale as a sheet.

Angus was startled, "Tammy, what are you doing here?"

Tammy clenched her teeth desperately, and she stared at him with her red eyes.

Angus frowned. He was confused. "What's wrong with you? Get up first"

Chapter3 You give up
He bent down and put his hands under her armpits and picked her up.

Suddenly, Tammy was agitated and pushed him away hard, "Get off me!"

She almost growled out.

"......"

Her attitude was so strange. Did she know anything?

Instantly, his eyes went cold, "Did you know?"

Tammy clenched her fists in grief, "Yes!"

"......"

Angus said coldly, "In that case, there's no need to pretend loving."

It was clear that things had been revealed, and his cold tone seemed to tell her that there was no need for him to pretend to be gentle with her anymore.

The air went cold, and Tammy's whole body became top-heavy as if all her insides had been emptied!

Suddenly, she was so out of breath that a sensation of her breath being blocked came over her, and she fell to the ground, covering her chest!

Angus sensed something was wrong and immediately took her in his arms!

"Tammy!" There was urgency in his voice.

Tammy's breath quickened and she gripped the man's suit tie. Her tears gushed from her eyes, and her red eyes were full of indignation!

"........"

Angus didn't say much, but his face was unusually livid. He just picked Tammy up and put her on the bed.

"Tammy, how are you feeling?" He patted her face gently, a fine layer of sweat covering his forehead.

Tammy stared at him with wide and empty eyes. She gave him a sarcastic smile.

If he'd been scared about her before, she'd have been happy. But now she just felt sick.

He wasn't afraid she'd die, but he was afraid that he could not get her to sign the consent form!

Suddenly, Tammy sat up in bed, pushed him away, and got right off the bed!

Angus frowned. He easily caught her back with his long arms and held her in his arms. He hugged her from behind, and his eyes were dark, "Where do you want to go?"

"You let go of me!" Tammy shouted!

Finally, monstrous anger erupted and she tried almost with all her might to break the man's hands that held her. Her nails almost sank into the back of his hands.

Angus frowned and a chill crossed his face as he said coldly, "Stop it. Calm down!"

"........"

He's got the nerve to think she was making a scene?

Tammy gritted her teeth, veins bulging on her forehead as she hissed, "Angus, how could you cheat on my feelings like that?!"

She hated him so much!

Angus closed his eyes and his breathing became a little faster. He easily clamped around her in his embrace. His strong and muscular muscles pressed against her back through the suit and her nightgown. His heartbeat strongly that almost crushed her thin and frail body.

In the end, he opened his cold and heartless eyes with a frost that couldn't be melted, "Yes, I married you for your kidney, but..."

He seemed to be trying to explain something else, but the words wouldn't come out of his mouth.

After all, he was doing it for her kidney. What else could he do to explain?

"........"

He had finally admitted it to her. He admitted his intention so neatly, so righteously!

Tammy breathed a cold air. She bit down on her teeth, and her face was full of tears. The tears hid the scars on her face. She raged, "I won't give my kidney to Sonia. You give up!"

His voice was also tinged with a hidden anger, and his strong, powerful arms around her became tighter, "Tammy, she's your sister. Why are you so cruel? It's just a kidney. You are not going to die!"

Just a kidney?

Why did he have the nerve to say that?

...
&4& | LEARN_MORE | https://web.readnow.mobi/51691322-fb_contact-encp1 | 106206892171576 | Love Story City | https://facebook.com/100083614308933 | 16,244 | 2 | 987,293,376,245,704 | 2024-04-18 02:00 | person_profile | eligible | 0 | 0 | NONE | 0 | 1 | 1 | 0 | Learn more | 0 | Love Story City | 120206044010270147 | web.readnow.mobi | NONE | video | https://web.readnow.mobi/51691322-fb_contact-encp15_5-0410-core2.html?adid={{ad.id}}&char=961225&accid=412379061191874 | 2024-04-17 20:07 | https://scontent-sjc3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/437796052_941132774146873_2649854529655946928_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_s60x60&_nc_cat=104&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=MdpGoM_fgtMAb6iesuk&_nc_ht=scontent-sjc3-1.xx&oh=00_AfDpu8SD-XAH1AzkcWW3DEN_i4eGg-QccByyFPGnaNhIWw&oe=662730FC | person_profile | 0 | ReadNow | https://scontent-sjc3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/437768631_1166833334551092_4194508496263656437_n.jpg?_nc_cat=107&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=sa0ft2SSvZ0Ab6AALKy&_nc_ht=scontent-sjc3-1.xx&oh=00_AfAqnwRU3O5Q3U5NvDBbBixPuHFvySvE9TbYIAwzXh3Jmw&oe=662761CB | 0 | 3 | Love Story City | 0 | 0 | 2024-04-18 02:00 | View Edit Delete
