Yes 2024-03-27 22:52 active 362 0 948888387240527 ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ”ฅDownload and search book ID: 9792 My sister's boyfriend turned out to be my mate! As he rejected me, I retaliated by cutting off all contact with the packโ€ฆ
Chapter 1: Ayla
โ€œAyla, is dinner ready? No more delay. Kylee and Theo will be soon here!โ€
โ€œYes, mom.โ€ I sighed hearing my mother's impatient urging.
Kylee is my little sister, and Theo is her mate as well as our future Alpha. It is said that they had been together for over a year, and today is the first Kylee has brought her mate home. I was so happy for her.
Our current Alpha, Alpha Torin, was a good leader, a fair leader, and a good man. I knew he had a son, but I had never met him before.
But I had heard that his son, Theo, was promising to be just as good an Alpha as his father. So I really couldnโ€™t have been more relieved that he was my sisterโ€™s mate. She would be properly looked after and taken care of, and she would be happy.
I was pulling the chicken out of the oven when I saw my mother rushing past me, excitedly shouting towards the door, โ€œThey're here.โ€
After my father passed away, my mother had become an alcoholic. But she always managed to look presentable in front of Kylee. For example, today, she was not only dressed neatly, but even used mouthwash.

I was still transferring the food when I heard the front door open and the squeals of my mother and sister as they embraced. I finished my task and moved the dishes to the dining room table that was already set neatly. I smiled at my presentation and excitedly hurried to the living room.

I froze at the threshold. A scent overwhelmed my senses, causing my stomach to knot and my heart to race.

The tall, broad man standing next to my sister turned toward me and we locked eyes.

Mate.

I practically gagged trying to stifle the word from slipping from my mouth.

What was happening?

This was my sisterโ€™s mate.

Not mine.

This man was fated to Kylee.

So why was I having this reaction?

Better questionโ€ฆ

Why did HE seem to be having the same reaction?

His eyes were wide, pupils dilated, and they held my gaze with a vice-like grip as he, too, seemed frozen to where he stood.

Dasha, my wolf, bounced excitedly in my head, recognizing him and his wolf just as I was. It took a minute for her to understand the situation, but once she did, she started whimpering in the back of my mind.

This couldnโ€™t be happening.

What was happening?

I forced myself to address the situation as a whole. Fine, this was happening. Now, what is the best way to handle the situation? I wasnโ€™t going to break my sisterโ€™s heart. Absolutely not. I wouldnโ€™t let him either. Not right now. Weโ€™ll just get through dinner, and Iโ€™ll find a way to speak with him in private later.

I cleared my throat and plastered a smile on my face.

โ€œKylee, Iโ€™m so excited youโ€™re home,โ€ I said, opening my arms so she could jump into them like she had since she was little.

โ€œIโ€™ve missed you, sis,โ€ she said.

โ€œIโ€™ve missed you, too,โ€ I said quietly.

We separated, and she turned to the male behind her. โ€œTheo, this is my sister, Ayla. Ayla, this is my mate, Theo.โ€

Theoโ€™s hands were clenched into fists, and he forced a tight-jawed smile toward me. At least I was better at faking it them him. Geesh.

I nodded to him with a broad smile. I knew it didnโ€™t reach my eyes, but at least Ma and Kylee wouldnโ€™t notice.

โ€œItโ€™s lovely to meet you, Theo,โ€ I said. โ€œDinner is ready in the dining room. Why donโ€™t you guys go take a seat, and Iโ€™ll be right there. I need to tend to dessert first.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t take too long,โ€ Kylee said brightly. โ€œWe have some big news, and I donโ€™t think I can wait much longer.โ€

โ€œI promise Iโ€™ll be right there,โ€ I assured her as I rubbed her shoulder.

Kylee grabbed Ma by the arm and led her to the dining room. Theo followed a few steps behind. He had to pass me to get through. Right as he approached, I turned my body to ensure we didnโ€™t touch. He paused in front of me for a moment. I looked up to meet his eyes.

There was anger, confusion, desire, and possibly even hurt reflecting in his eyes that I couldnโ€™t help but notice were the color of honey. He had questions. I subtly shook my head at him. Hoping and silently begging that he knew we couldnโ€™t do this here.

The sound of Kyleeโ€™s laugh from the other room made me jump and then quickly retreat to the kitchen. I grabbed the homemade cheesecake from the fridge and set it on the counter for later.

I listened to the others conversing in the next room and took several deep breaths. I felt a lump start to form in my throat and quickly pushed it down. This wasnโ€™t the time to cry.

I was almost to the dining room when I heard the last part of what Kylee was saying, and again, I was left frozen at the threshold.

โ€œโ€ฆ our mating ceremony is in three months.โ€ Kylee looked up at me. โ€œOh, Ayla, Iโ€™m sorry. I just couldnโ€™t hold back any longer. Arenโ€™t you happy for us?โ€

I put the same fake smile back on. โ€œOf course Iโ€™m happy for you,โ€ I said. โ€œYou deserve the best.โ€

I took my seat at the table, ignoring the fact that I was left sitting directly across from Theo. His eyes were boring into me, and my face felt like it was on fire. I started dishing out food and passing plates. I didnโ€™t say much over dinner. Instead, I just listened to Kylee and Ma talk about all the ideas they had for the mating ceremony. Theo didnโ€™t say much either but slowly started to do a better job hiding his discomfort with the situation.

It took everything to ignore the touches they shared, pushing down the jealousy that kept surging through me.
After dinner, while they were still talking, I made an excuse to slip out through the back door.

I stood on the porch and took several deep breaths. I released a string of curses.
โ€œWhat is happening? Why is this happening? This ISNโ€™T happening,โ€ I whispered with the force of a yell.

โ€˜Our mate.โ€™ Dasha insisted.

โ€œNo, heโ€™s not,โ€ I said back to her. โ€œHeโ€™s Kyleeโ€™s. There must be some kind of mistake.โ€

All of a sudden, I stiffened as a mouthwatering scent hit my nose. I knew who was standing behind me.

Chapter 2: Theo
I fought against the urges her scent was influencing as I stalked up to her. But more importantly, the urge to grab her and take her against the nearest tree. My wolf was going crazy about the idea, but he would learn fast that that was never going to happen.

I wouldnโ€™t accept her.

Knowing what I knew about her, that would never happen.

She turned to face me.

โ€œThis wonโ€™t happen,โ€ I spat out before she had a chance to speak.
Her jaw clenched, and her silvery-gray eyes stared into mine for a few short moments. But I couldnโ€™t read a thing behind them.

โ€œI absolutely agree,โ€ she stated evenly.

My wolf growled and snarled inside me, demanding to know what I was doing. I pushed down the hurt that hit me when she didnโ€™t fight me. Her reaction just proved why this needed to be done. I could never be with someone so cold and self-absorbed as her. There was no way someone like her could ever be my Luna.

โ€˜Donโ€™t know her.โ€™ Kieran yelled in my head.

I knew enough.

โ€œKylee is my mate. Not you. I, Theo Arden, future Alpha of the Greytooth Pack, reject you, Ayla Garner, as my mate and Luna.โ€ Kieran was snapping his teeth, pushing to take control to stop this.

โ€œI, Ayla Garner, accept your rejection and relinquish my claim as your mate and Luna.โ€

My wolf howled in pain. A pain that was mirrored within me as it felt like my heart was being ripped apart. It was the bond breaking. Releasing me from the tie that bound us together.
She stood there like nothing happened.

How could she stand there like nothing had happened?

She really didnโ€™t feel anything, did she? It was so easy for her to let us go.

โ€˜Mate wants me.โ€™

I grimaced. He meant her wolf. Her wolf wanted mine. He could sense her. She was even denying her wolf. I couldnโ€™t stand it anymore. I needed to get away from her.

I stormed back into the house, returning to the woman the goddess should have made my mate. I returned to the dining room to find her mother and her still deep in conversation. I was grateful she hadnโ€™t seemed to notice my absence or the change in my mood. It wasnโ€™t surprising. She was excited about seeing her family and sharing the news with them.

I had been, too, until her sister walked into the room. The scent had engulfed me, driving me to seek out the source like a lifeline. When I saw her, her beauty took my breath away. She was petit but strong, with long legs and perfect curves. She had a mass of caramel-blonde hair that cascaded over her shoulders, framing a face with plump lips and intense gray eyes that shined green in the light. I couldnโ€™t help but want her. I recognized who she was to me immediately.

But then I noticed her narrow nose and soft jawline were familiar. Her fair skin had a sun-kissed glow that I had always found attractive. Once I realized she had similar features to Kylee, I knew this was her sister, Ayla.

Kylee had told me on many occasions how her sister had changed after the death of their father. She was there for Kylee at first, but in less than a year, she started spending all her time away from home. She ended up dropping out of the private school her parents had worked so hard to send her to. Eventually, Kylee lost track of what she was doing with her life.

Kylee was there for her when she was around, trying to be supportive. But she wasnโ€™t the sister she used to love. What bothered her most was Aylaโ€™s treatment of their mother. Ayla still lived in the house with her, but Kylee always got the impression that helping their mother was just a burden. She worried their mother would be left with no one to take care of her, and she wasnโ€™t in the best of health anymore.

โ€œI have an idea,โ€ I interrupted. They both looked up at me expectantly. โ€œWhy doesnโ€™t your mother come to stay with us for a while? At least until the ceremony? We have the room in the packhouse, and Iโ€™m sure you and my mother would appreciate the extra input.โ€

Both their faces lit up.

โ€œReally? We can do that?โ€ Kylee said happily.

โ€œOf course,โ€ I said with a smile.

โ€œThank you.โ€

Kylee jumped up from the table and threw her arms around me, kissing me sweetly. I ignored the growls coming from Kieran. Seeing their reaction told me I had made the exact right decision. Despite what the burning in my chest told me.

This was who I was supposed to be with. Not Ayla.

โ€˜Keep saying. Maybe believe.โ€™

I told him to shut up, and he retreated into the back of my mind, cutting himself off from me.

He would get over it. Once the bond was completely severed, he would understand this was the right thing for us and the pack.

Chapter 3: Ayla
I had managed to get myself together enough to rejoin my family. The pain that seared through me from Theoโ€™s rejection and my subsequent acceptance almost brought me to my knees. It took all of my strength to keep my body from shaking, praying he didnโ€™t notice the blood coming from my palms. I had clenched my fists so hard trying to stay on my feet that I broke the skin.

When he finally left, I released the sob that was the only thing capable of coming out of my mouth. But I didnโ€™t let the tears fall. Not yet. They couldnโ€™t know.

So, I steadied my breathing and went back into my house. I was surprised to find that Kylee and Ma werenโ€™t in the dining room anymore. They werenโ€™t in the living room either. But Theo was.

โ€œTheyโ€™re in your motherโ€™s room packing,โ€ he said coldly.

โ€œPacking?โ€ What was he talking about?

He stepped closer to me, lowering his voice. โ€œI think itโ€™s best that you keep your distance from Kylee for a while. We donโ€™t want her finding out about this. But I know sheโ€™ll want her mother to be a part of the ceremony planning. So sheโ€™s coming back with us.โ€

I felt like he just slapped me in the face. As if I would ever tell her. Thatโ€™s why I was doing this. So that I wouldnโ€™t break my baby sisterโ€™s heart. I gave him what he wanted, and now he was going to keep me from my family?

Dasha was confused and in pain, whimpering in my head because she didnโ€™t understand how he could be so cruel to us.

โ€œIf thatโ€™s what you think is best,โ€ I said to Theo through gritted teeth.

โ€œKylee,โ€ he called out, not breaking eye contact. โ€œLetโ€™s get going.โ€

My sister came prancing into the room. โ€œAlready?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s getting late. Letโ€™s head to the hotel for the night. Weโ€™ll swing by in the morning to pick up your mother.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€ she said brightly before turning to me. โ€œWhat about you, Ayla? Youโ€™re coming with, too, right?โ€

I opened my mouth to speak, but Theo decided to answer for me.

โ€œWe were just talking about that. Ayla has some things going on with work and canโ€™t get away.โ€

I gave her a tight smile. โ€œYes, Iโ€™m sorry. But I will try to come out there as soon as I can.โ€

โ€œOh, okay, I understand. But Iโ€™ll make sure we have a room ready for you whenever you can come.โ€

โ€œOf course. I canโ€™t wait,โ€ I said, my heart breaking again, knowing Theo wouldnโ€™t allow me to be there with her.

We all said our goodbyes, and they left. Ma was still standing at the window watching them drive off when I went to clean up the dishes in the kitchen. She finally came in behind me and started opening another bottle of wine. We had gone through four during dinner already. And I barely touched my glass.

โ€œMa, youโ€™ve had enough for the night,โ€ I said calmly.

โ€œOh, come on. Itโ€™s a celebration,โ€ Ma said. โ€œItโ€™s not every day you find out your baby is going to be a Luna.โ€

โ€œMa, you can celebrate more tomorrow. You need to finish packing,โ€ I said, gently taking the bottle from her hand. โ€œIโ€™m sure Kylee and Theo will be here first thing in the morning.โ€

โ€œWe can celebrate together while you help me pack,โ€ she said, grabbing the bottle back from me. โ€œThen Iโ€™ll help you pack.โ€

I winced. This wasnโ€™t going to end well. โ€œIโ€™m not coming, Ma.โ€

She stopped with the glass halfway to her lips. โ€œWhat do you mean youโ€™re not coming?โ€ she asked with a pout. โ€œYou have to be there. Kylee is going to be mated. I told her we would help pay for the ceremony.โ€

I winced again. She meant me. I would be helping pay for the ceremony. Ma didnโ€™t have a penny to her name.

โ€œThis is a big deal. Donโ€™t be so selfish, Ayla.โ€

Her words stung, but they werenโ€™t unexpected. This was kind of the norm when she got like this. I know she didnโ€™t really mean it. At least, she wouldnโ€™t mean it when she was sober. I got her into her bedroom and set her on the bed. I changed her into her nightgown and tucked her in.

She was asleep in seconds. I hurried through the rest of her packing. Stuffing two large suitcases as full as I could before carrying them out to the living room. Then I locked the front door, finished the last of the dishes, and slipped out into the backyard.

I stripped off my clothes as I headed for the forest, desperate to get under its protective shadows. As soon as I passed the treeline, I shifted, taking off at full speed. I let Dasha feel all the pain. I didnโ€™t try to hold her back anymore.

We would mourn the loss of our fated mate. The loss of the one person who was supposed to see us for who we were. The one person who was supposed to always put us first, without demands or expectations. We would mourn the loss of never getting to experience that.
But we wouldnโ€™t mourn him.

We ran until we could barely breathe. Until Dasha stopped at the edge of our pond โ€” our place of solace โ€” and let out a heartwrenching howl into the night air. Shifting at the end as she retreated back into my mind, out of reach to heal her broken heart, while I let the torrent of tears finally fall.

I walked into the water, curling into myself as the sobs wracked my body, intensifying the burn that was still there from our bond being ripped from my heart.

I submerged myself completely, washing my body clean of Theo, the mate bond, and every dream of finding my soulmate.

In the midst of this pain I drifted off to sleep.
The next morning.
When I made it back to the house, there was no one there. My mother had been taken away by them.
I was standing in an empty room in an empty house. The silence was deafening. And it all came crashing down. I sank to my knees, begging the goddess to just let it all go away, just for a little while. I just wanted to feel numb.

I lost track of how long I sat in that spot, staring without seeing. I didnโ€™t even know Zeff was there until I felt him grip my arms.

โ€œAyls, what happened? Whatโ€™s wrong?โ€ he asked, brushing hair out of my face, forcing me to look at him. โ€œAyla, what is going on?โ€

โ€œI found my mate,โ€ I said, the corner of my mouth tipping up mockingly. โ€œHeโ€™s scheduled to be mated to my sister.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Zeff exclaimed, anger and concern twisting his handsome features.

Zeff was a good man. He had been there for me when no one else was. He was the only person who knew everything I went through. And here he was, listening to me tell him about meeting Theo, the mating ceremony, and my rejection. Why couldnโ€™t he have been my mate? He should have been.

โ€œCome on,โ€ he said, lifting me up. โ€œYouโ€™re coming to stay with me.โ€

I didnโ€™t protest. The goddess had given me this one little blessing. I was numb. Zeff held me up by my waist and led me out to his car. He tucked me into the passenger seat and disappeared into the house again, only to emerge a few minutes later with a duffel bag in hand.

He pulled out and drove us the twenty minutes to his house. Just like before, he helped me inside, this time sitting me on the big, comfy leather couch in his living room.

He came and sat next to me, putting an arm over my shoulder and pulling me into him. I let myself relax some. This was the first thing since Theo walked into my life that felt normal, felt comfortable. He leaned his head on mine, rubbing his fingers along my arm.

โ€œAyla. Youโ€™re going to deal with this โ€” weโ€™re going to deal with this together. Screw him, okay. Heโ€™s a dirtbag. You deserve so much better than some fool who doesnโ€™t see how incredible you are.โ€

I wanted to roll my eyes, but it wasnโ€™t just about him.

โ€œHe took my family, Zeff. I would have gotten over him just rejecting me because of Kylee. At least she would be safe and happy.โ€

โ€œNo. They either treat you like a servant or a bank. They donโ€™t care what their actions do to you as long as they keep getting what they want."

โ€œZeff...But they were my familyโ€ I wanted to contradict him, but I knew he was right.

โ€œGet over him.โ€ He took a step toward me, reaching up to hold my chin. โ€œHeโ€™s not the only one who can take care of you, Ayla. He may be foolish enough not to want you, but Iโ€™m not.โ€

My breath caught in my throat. He had told me about his feelings before, but we both avoided going down that road with each other. We knew we could find our fated mates at any time, and we didnโ€™t want to deny each other that.

โ€œMove in here with me, Ayls,โ€ Zeff said. โ€œThereโ€™s nothing stopping us now.โ€

โ€œZeff, you still have a mate out there somewhere.โ€

โ€œAyla, stop. Iโ€™m thirty-four and well-traveled. If I was going to find her, I would have long before now. We both know that.โ€

Suddenly his lips were on mine. I was shocked, but mostly because it felt good. I felt wanted. I kissed him back, not wanting to give that feeling up. I leaned into him โ€” until Dasha came charging to the forefront, growling and snarling that someone who wasnโ€™t our mate was touching us.

I ripped myself from Zeffโ€™s embrace. Breathing heavily, the pain of the severed bond renewed. I clutched my chest.

โ€œAyla.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t. The bond. Itโ€™s still there. It hasnโ€™t faded yet.โ€

Zeff pulled me into his arms. โ€œOkay. Itโ€™s okay. We can wait. Weโ€™ll take it slow.โ€

I rested my head on his chest. โ€œOkay.โ€

He squeezed me tighter. I still didnโ€™t know if we could make this work, but I wanted to try.

I stayed with the Zeff, and it was quiet. Until a week later, when Theo burst in.

Chapter 4: Theo
It had been a week since I had gone home with Kylee. Seven days and a hundred miles away, and the bond was still there. The burning in my chest wouldnโ€™t go away. I didnโ€™t understand and it was annoying.

More important is Kieran. He had spent the whole week giving me the silent treatment, except when Kylee was around. Then all he did was growl and snarl. It was getting exhausting.

I had taken to holing up in my office most of the time. I didnโ€™t want to snap at Kylee, or her mother, which had become hard to avoid by the third day. I was glad I had a good reason for me being so busy all of a sudden.

Alpha was sick. He was diagnosed with a progressive disease almost a year ago. So, he decided it was time to hand the title down to me. It wasnโ€™t official yet. We were planning on making the change at the same time as Kyleeโ€™s and my mating ceremony. Actually, thatโ€™s why I decided to make Kylee my official mate. Alphaโ€™s were always stronger with a strong Luna by their side. With the circumstances of my fatherโ€™s abdication, our pack needed to be as strong as possible.

But there was still a lot to take care of and a lot I had to learn about being an Alpha before that time. So it wasnโ€™t hard to convince her that it was the stress that was causing me to be distant.

But this morning, I'm driving myself to Kylee's house. I promised to help her retrieve her mother's necklace, which she wanted to wear during our mating ceremony.

In addition, if I couldnโ€™t completely sever the bond between me and Ayla, Kieran could end up taking control and stop me from marking Kylee.
So, once I got the necklace, Iโ€™d reject Ayla again, making sure it stuck this time, and Iโ€™d go back home.

When I pulled up to the house, something twisted in my gut. When I step into the house, her invigorating scent of oranges and cloves invaded my nostrils, but it wasnโ€™t nearly as strong as it should have been.
I realize Ayla wasn't home.
Instead, there was another smell in Ayla's room.
The scent was male. It was faint, he wasnโ€™t here long, but mixed in with the distinctive scent of my mate, I could pick it out anywhere. From the trail, it seemed as if he was the one who packed up her things.

I stormed out of the house. Tossing the jewelry box in the passenger seat, I took my phone out and searched for the number for the publishing house Kylee said Ayla worked for.
I got another address that Ayla had added to her personal profile from the receptionist.

I followed the GPS to the address, pulling into the drive of a large, two-story house in a nice neighborhood. Parking half on the lawn, I didnโ€™t even close the car door before taking the front steps two at a time.

I banged on the door until I heard movement inside. A man opened it. It was the male I smelled in Aylaโ€™s room. Before he could say anything, I lunged at him, my hands grabbing the front of his shirt and practically lifting him off the ground.

โ€œWhat have you done with her? I smell her all over you. Where is she?โ€

He pushed me off him, his eyes glaring at me with recognition and disdain.

โ€œYou must be Theo.โ€

โ€œWhat is going on?โ€ Aylaโ€™s voice floated down to me as she ran down the stairs. She froze halfway down the moment she laid eyes on me. โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€

A silk robe hung open, revealing the shorts and cut-off tank top she wore underneath, her caramel-colored hair flowing loosely around her shoulders. She was gorgeous. And clearly not in distress. I took a step toward her as my rage grew.

โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€ I spat back.

โ€œThatโ€™s none of your concern,โ€ the male interjected.

I turned on him again, a rumbling growl emanating from my chest, my claws extending. I was ready to rip his throat out.

โ€œStop,โ€ Ayla yelled, coming the rest of the way down the stairs and stepping between the two of us. โ€œZeff, go to work.โ€

โ€œAbsolutely not. Iโ€™m not leaving you here with him. Not in the state heโ€™s in.โ€

โ€œI would never hurt her.โ€ Kieran was ready to burst from my skin. How dare this dirtbag think we would ever lay a hand on her.

โ€œWe both know thatโ€™s crap.โ€

โ€œZeff, I said go.โ€ Her expression softened a little. โ€œIโ€™ll call you later.โ€

She would.

The Zeff guy shot me another hate-filled look before exiting out the open front door. We stood in silence until the sound of his engine faded.

โ€œAre you dating him?โ€

Her eyes went wide, then narrowed as she took a step forward. โ€œWhat I do with a male โ€” or anyone for that matter โ€” is none of your business.โ€

โ€œIt isnโ€™t.โ€ Electricity passed through the air between us. โ€œHe has no right to put his hands on you.โ€

โ€œHe does if I want him to,โ€ she yelled, not only holding her ground against the alpha energy I was exuding but taking another step toward me. โ€œI donโ€™t belong to anyone, remember? I have no mate.โ€

I lost it. My hand was around her neck and my mouth was on hers before I even knew what I had done. But I didnโ€™t stop. I couldnโ€™t stop. Sparks of intense electricity shot through me, invigorating all my senses. I pushed her to open for me, my tongue seeking hers. Goddess, she tasted so good. She returned the kiss, her arousal mingling in the air.

โ€œMINE.โ€

She pushed me off her with force.

I took a step toward her again but she backed away.

โ€œDonโ€™t you hurt Kylee like this.โ€

โ€œLike you care about your sister getting hurt,โ€ I spat, but for some reason, I instantly regretted it. But I couldnโ€™t take it back. I wouldnโ€™t take it back.

โ€œExcuse me?โ€ Pure rage radiated off of her, her eyes turning an icy blue.

โ€œYou abandoned Kylee a long time ago. You disappeared all the time, leaving her alone with a mother who was struggling to keep everything together.โ€

Aylaโ€™s face paled. Every ounce of anger seemed to drain from her instantly, that blue fire fading from her eyes.

She almost went completely limp in front of me, stumbling until her back hit the wall. Her faรงade cracked.

โ€œThatโ€™s what she told you? She said that?โ€ her voice was almost a whisper.

Kieran was going insane in my head, telling me to shut up, to just stop talking. Urging me to stop hurting her. Because I was hurting her. I had struck a nerve, a very deep one, and I wouldnโ€™t stop. She had to break the bond. Once and for all. If it meant I had to break her to do it, I would.

โ€œShe told me everything. She told me how you would keep things from her and your mother. That you would be out at all hours of the night when you were a teenager. How you dropped out of high school, waisting the tuition your parents worked so hard for.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œI could never be with someone as cold and heartless as you.โ€

Aylaโ€™s head snapped up. Her eyes a steely gray as she resolved herself to something I couldnโ€™t figure out but would soon find out.

โ€œI, Ayla Garner, reject you, Theo Arden, as my mate. I relinquish my claim as your mate and Luna.โ€

I gritted my teeth as Kieran howled in my head, screaming for me not to accept it.

โ€œI, Theo Arden, accept your rejection.โ€ The pain in my chest amplified, but I could still feel the bond. โ€œWeโ€™ve done this before. Itโ€™s not working.โ€

โ€œTell your wolf to accept it,โ€ Ayla said with a crack in her voice.

The muscles in my jaw tightened to a point I thought my teeth would shatter. The noise in my head from Kieran becoming almost unbearable.

โ€œHe wonโ€™t.โ€

โ€œMake him,โ€ she forced out.

โ€œI canโ€™t.โ€

โ€œHe doesnโ€™t have a choice. Iโ€™ll never be with him, and neither will she,โ€ Ayla said, tears threatening to fall from her eyes.

I could feel the pain he felt. It was excruciating. I told him it would end if he just accepted, but he wouldnโ€™t give in. He was an Alpha. He was as strong as me. Iโ€™d never overpower him on this. Ayla must have sensed my stalemate. Or her wolf did and told her because she pulled herself from against the wall, standing up straight again.

โ€œI, Ayla Garner, cut my ties to Alpha Torinโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ There was desperation in my voice. She couldnโ€™t do this. I moved to stop her.

โ€œAnd the Greytooth Pack.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ I fell to a knee, feeling the invisible tether that united pack members with their Alpha splinter. Kieran was pounding against the barriers of my control, putting all his might into taking over the shift. I knew I was on the verge.

โ€œFrom this day forth, I am a rogue.โ€ She took an unsteady step toward me, silent tears rolling freely down her face. โ€œNow get out.โ€

She had used my fatherโ€™s name. Either of our names would have worked in the limbo state we were currently in. But she used my fatherโ€™s. There was nothing I could do to stop her. Nothing I could do to fight the separation. She knew exactly what she was doing.

If my wolf wouldnโ€™t sever the mate bond, she would remove herself from any control I had over her.

With one final, agonizing look, she walked away, disappearing upstairs.

I took in a ragged breath of air. Ayla now had until midnight to be out of our territory. If I caught her on our land after that, I would have to murder her. Mate bond or not. She was a rogue now. It was our laws.

Kieran had finally gone still in my mind.

โ€˜Mateโ€™s gone.โ€™

Did he mean Ayla or her wolf?

โ€˜Dasha. Mateโ€™s name is Dasha. Dashaโ€™s gone.โ€™

Realization hit me and panic set in. Her wolf was gone. The pain was too much. She had retreated deep into the recesses of Aylaโ€™s subconscious. Ayla wouldnโ€™t be able to call on her. She wouldnโ€™t be able to shift. She wouldnโ€™t be able to heal.

She was a rogue without a wolf. She couldnโ€™t protect herself.

I had to get as far away from her as possible.

I dragged myself back to my feet, forcing them to walk out the door.

Chapter 5: Ayla
The moment the door was closed, I sank to the floor. It was no longer sobs that escaped my body but soul-shattering screams.

She said I abandoned her.

Theo made it sound like I spent my teen years partying and getting into trouble. She said I dropped out of high school.

She said I wasnโ€™t a sister to her.

The betrayal was soul-crushing.

I had given up everything for them.

I screamed and let the tears flow freely until my body ached. As soon as it felt like I could breathe without being stabbed by a red-hot dagger, I pulled myself up and started moving. I only had a few hours to get my things and get out of Greytooth territory.

I had made myself a rogue. I didnโ€™t have a pack anymore. And I had no idea where I was going to go. All the borders on this side of the territory sat right against other pack lands. To get out of one, Iโ€™d have to enter another. But it was my only option. Trying to get to unclaimed territory was too risky. I would have better luck on foreign pack land than on the land I just severed ties to.

After leaving a note for Zeff, I packed up and drove away.

The Greytooth Pack may not be the largest in population, but they had one of the biggest territories. The closest border crossing was nearly two hours away. And I needed to be far away before Zeff got home. I couldnโ€™t have him tracking me down.

Especially since I didnโ€™t give him much of an explanation.

But it was better this way. I wasnโ€™t going to risk him cutting ties and going rogue as well. Because he would. He would hold Theo responsible, and he would never stay in a pack with an alpha he didnโ€™t respect, let alone hate. This way, the note I left would have just made it seem like I got cold feet about us being together.

I drove to the outskirts of town and got on the highway. From there, it was practically a straight shot to the border. I was grateful at first, but after about an hour, I realized the monotonous ride only left my mind wondering and worrying and thinking about things I didnโ€™t need to think about.

When Theo found me in the yard that first day, I had no idea what he would say. His initial reaction to our meeting had me thinking he would pursue the pairing. But then his increasingly icy demeanor throughout the evening made it seem like he was thinking along the same lines I was. He wasnโ€™t going to hurt Kylee for someone he didnโ€™t know.

He loved her. She loved him. I had no idea who he was, nor he I. We could reject each other and just go on our way. Neither one of us would have to break Kyleeโ€™s heart. I thought he was keeping me from my family to be cruel. Or maybe to make things easier for both of us.

But today, his words revealed a different motive. He didnโ€™t reject me for Kylee. He rejected me because of her. Because he believed what she said and painted me as some coldhearted delinquent. But why? I just couldnโ€™t figure that out.

Dad died in a gas explosion along with my aunt and uncle ten years ago. I was fourteen, and Kylee was nine. Our thirteen-year-old cousin, Mina, came to live with us for a while after their deaths. Ma was hit pretty hard by the loss, so the three of us quickly started taking care of each other. We spent every spare minute with each other. Then our financial situation changed. Kylee was entirely too young, and Mina had been through enough losing both her parents for me to put that on her. So, it was up to me to keep food on the table and a roof over our heads.

But I was still fourteen. Finding jobs that paid enough to support a family of four at the age of fourteen was non-existent. I would need to work multiple jobs, and there just wasnโ€™t enough time in the day. So, I approached the headmaster at my private high school and confided my situation with him. I was desperate not to drop out or risk my grades dropping and losing my scholarship. My parents didnโ€™t pay a dime of my tuition.

Headmaster Fordham was a miracle worker. He helped me test out of over eighty percent of my academic requirements by the end of my freshman year. I only had to take four summer classes to graduate a week after my fifteenth birthday. I was even able to broker a deal with him that would set the remaining three years of my scholarship fund aside for Kylee when it came time for her to attend high school.

I still ended up working multiple jobs for several years. But no matter what, I always tried to be there for Kylee as much as possible.

Everything I did was for her.

I completely lost touch with all of my school friends. I never partied. I barely socialized. The jobs I held were really the only place that happened. But I was home to take her to school every morning, and I ensured I had at least an hour to help her with her homework almost every day.

I didnโ€™t discuss the lengths I went to with Kylee. I didnโ€™t want her to feel bad or that it was her fault. And I didnโ€™t want her to see what Ma was going through. She was struggling to keep any job. She was drinking daily. There were even a couple of times she racked up gambling debts that put us in some scary situations.

But I never let Kylee see any of that. It was my job to protect them.

There was so much more that didnโ€™t add up with what Theo had said. But I didnโ€™t get to think about it further.

A searing pain shot through my chest, making my vision go white at the edges, blinding me to a point I almost missed the figure standing in the road before me.

My heart jumped into my chest. I turned the wheel as sharp as I could, slamming on the brakes to avoid hitting them head-on. The moment I did it, I felt foolish. Within seconds, I was spinning through the air and sliding down an embankment.

When the vehicle came to a stop, I was upside down. I registered the smell of blood, but everything was blurry. I didnโ€™t feel significant pain, so I didnโ€™t think the blood was coming from me.

The person on the road!

I scrambled out of the car and up the incline. Without Dasha, I couldnโ€™t see well in the dark, but I could see a blurry figure moving toward me.

โ€œAre you okay?โ€ I called.

I didnโ€™t catch what they were saying because I suddenly felt the world falling out from beneath my feet, and everything went dark.

Chapter 6: Theo
I said I would break her if that was what it took.

And I certainly followed through with that.

Aylaโ€™s hard exterior had cracked and shattered before me.

I had driven over an hour, and my stomach was still in knots. So much so that I had to stop to throw up at one point. Guilt tore at me.

I really had been cruel to her.

Especially since it turned out it wasnโ€™t even her fault the bond hadnโ€™t broken. She and Dasha had accepted my rejection. They had done what I needed them to do. Ayla had stayed away from Kylee and me. She hadnโ€™t tried to be around them. From what I could tell, she hadnโ€™t even called Kylee like she used to. And how did I repay her? By ripping her apart with every intention of doing as much damage as possible.

It was my wolf that was still hanging on. It was Kieran who kept us in a constant state of heartache. Kept Ayla in a constant state of pain.

And then she had to go and do something foolish and cut herself out of the pack. She was completely lost to us now. The only thing I could do was tell myself it was what I wanted. It was the only way to get rid of the temptation and put enough distance between us until Kylee and I were marked and mated and leading our pack.

Every time I said it, Kieran was there to argue.

By the time I pulled up to the packhouse, I was so pissed that anyone around instantly took a wide birth. My aura was probably so intense that I was making everyone physically uncomfortable, but I really didnโ€™t care.

I was going to head to my office but decided against it. Too many people had access to me there, and I really didnโ€™t need anyone coming around.

What I needed was to work off some of this rage and pent-up energy.

I made a beeline for the private training room in the wing of the packhouse reserved for ranking members of the pack. I was relieved to find it empty, tugging my shirt over my head and immediately heading to the punching bag in the corner.

I had worked up a sweat when Briggs entered the room. Walking over to me with his usual swagger, his arms crossed over his chest as he leaned against the wall close by. He knew something was up. He had been hounding me about it since we got back from Kyleeโ€™s house. So had my mother, but I sure wasnโ€™t going down that road.

Briggs was my Beta. We had been friends since we were eight and had been through everything together since then. I didnโ€™t think there was anything we could hide from each other. But I surely wanted to hide this from him. So I just ignored his presence.

โ€œYou ready to tell me what is going on with you? Or at least, where you were today?โ€ he said loud enough to be heard over the sound of my fists hitting the bag.

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œIf you donโ€™t, weโ€™ll sedate you. Your aura is out of control right now, bro. This isnโ€™t about you just being in a pissy mood anymore,โ€ Briggs said with an edge to his voice that meant he was serious.
I yelled as I hit the bag hard one more time. I winced as I forced my fingers through my hair. I hadnโ€™t realized I had been breaking the skin on my knuckles. I fell back against the wall, sliding down to the floor.

โ€œYou know Iโ€™m here for you, bro,โ€ my Beta said calmly. โ€œWhatever it is, you can talk to me.โ€
I nodded.

โ€˜Tell him.โ€™

I winced at Keiranโ€™s demand. But I couldnโ€™t really disagree anymore.

โ€œI found my mate,โ€ I admitted. I could feel Briggsโ€™ eyes go wide in his head.

โ€œWhat do you mean you found your mate?โ€ he took a step closer. โ€œPlease tell me youโ€™re talking about Kylee.โ€

I shook my head. โ€œNo. I found my fated mate.โ€

โ€œWhat. The. Fu-โ€ He had warned me about this when I first got involved with Kylee and again when we announced our mating ceremony. โ€œWhere is she? Who is she?โ€

โ€œI rejected her. Sheโ€™s gone.โ€

โ€œTheo, man, youโ€™re really scaring me now. Why would you do that? What were you thinking?โ€ Briggs demanded.

โ€œSheโ€™s Kyleeโ€™s sister,โ€ I snapped. Briggs tensed up.

โ€œAyla? As in the sister that allegedly abandoned Kylee?โ€

His use of the word โ€œallegedlyโ€ pissed me off and confused me a little. He really liked Kylee. Theyโ€™ve always gotten along. Even when he was cautioning me about finding my mate, he told me he was happy for me.

โ€œAre you trying to say Kylee is lying?โ€ I snapped.

He made a face. โ€œNo, but I do think itโ€™s foolish to reject your mate without all the information.โ€

โ€œI have all the information I need.โ€

โ€œNo, you have Kyleeโ€™s side of the story,โ€ Briggs said with a worried look.

โ€œAnd their motherโ€™s,โ€ I added.

Briggs scoffed. โ€œLook, Marie Garner is a nice enough lady, but I wouldnโ€™t exactly trust her judgment.โ€

โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€ I asked, my own concern growing.

โ€œBro, sheโ€™s a lush,โ€ Briggs said with a shrug. โ€œNot that youโ€™ve been around enough to notice since sheโ€™s been here. I canโ€™t tell how bad, and she seems pretty harmless. But these things often have a dark side that no one sees.โ€

I couldnโ€™t believe we were having this conversation. The last thing I needed was any kind of doubt in my decision.

โ€œWhatever. It doesnโ€™t matter. Whatโ€™s done is done. And Aylaโ€™s reactions to all of this told me all I needed to know from her.โ€ I pushed myself to my feet.

โ€œWhat were her reactions?โ€ Briggs asked cautiously, and I realized my choice of words may have given away more than I intended. I knew he wouldnโ€™t let it go unless he was sure I told him everything.

โ€œWhich time?โ€ I said quietly.

โ€œExcuse me?โ€ He heard exactly what I said. โ€œWhat happened, Theo?โ€

โ€œShe never argued or fought the rejection. She agreed and accepted it the first day we met like it was nothing. She had no response, no rebuttal, no explanation,โ€ I told him. โ€œYou have to be coldhearted to feel nothing after breaking a mate bond.โ€

โ€œOr extremely strong,โ€ Briggs stated. โ€œYou said she didnโ€™t argue or fight. Did you even give her a chance to speak or even get to know anything about her before you threw her to the curb? Or did you just walk up to her and say tough words?โ€

I grimaced. Thatโ€™s exactly what happened. โ€œThere wasnโ€™t exactly an opportunity for that. Neither one of us wanted Kylee to find out.โ€

The muscles in his neck flexed as he tensed. โ€œYou said โ€˜which time.โ€™ When did you see her again?โ€

โ€œThis morning.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

I could tell he was choosing his words carefully.

โ€œKylee wanted a necklace of her motherโ€™s that was left at their house for some appointment this week. I went back to get it.โ€

โ€œOkay, someone else could have done that. Why did you go?โ€ Briggs pushed, but the words stuck in my throat. โ€œTheo, youโ€™re hurting. Thereโ€™s no way this is as cut and dry as youโ€™re trying to say it is.โ€

โ€œThe bond didnโ€™t break. Not completely.โ€

โ€œGoddess, Theo. So you both have been walking around with your hearts ripped open for the past week?โ€ Briggs said. โ€œSo, what happened today? Why are you still on the edge of ripping half the packโ€™s throats out?โ€

Images of that morning flashed through my head. The fear that something had happened to her when she hadnโ€™t been home. The jealousy and rage at finding her at another maleโ€™s house. The way it felt when I kissed her. And sheer pain and anguish of everything that followed.

โ€œTheo?โ€ Briggs pressed.

โ€œShe cut her ties to the pack,โ€ I said solemnly. โ€œShe turned herself rogue.โ€

โ€œTheo,โ€ Briggs bellowed, โ€œhow could you let that happen? Why didnโ€™t you stop her?โ€

โ€œShe cut herself from Dad. She used his name. There was nothing I could do. I had no way of fighting it.โ€ I was done with this conversation. โ€œSo none of this matters. Itโ€™s done. Sheโ€™s gone. Sheโ€™s never coming back. Doing so would be a death sentence, and she knew that.โ€

โ€œWhat have you done, Theo?โ€

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t matter,โ€ I yelled. โ€œWhatever I did or didnโ€™t do, she never wanted me anyway. Sheโ€™s not my problem anymore. So right now, Iโ€™m going to worry about cleaning up the mess she made and figure out how to tell Kylee and Marie that theyโ€™ll never see her again. And donโ€™t you dare breathe a word about any of this to them, do you understand me?โ€

โ€œOkay. Okay,โ€ Briggs said, raising his hands in the air, trying to calm me down. โ€œYouโ€™re right. Thereโ€™s nothing we can do about her now. If itโ€™s done and over with, then itโ€™s done and over with. Weโ€™ll move on.โ€

I wasnโ€™t sure he believed it, but I didnโ€™t care. Like I said, she wasnโ€™t my problem anymore.

I went back to my room. There was a knock on my room door, and Kylee poked her head in before I had a chance to answer.
โ€œThere you are, mate,โ€ she cooed, sitting in my lap.
She ran a hand up my chest, leaning in to kiss me. Kieranโ€™s growl started immediately.
I still needed to let off some steam. Anything to get some relief.
I was about to respond to her when blinding pain erupted through my body. No 2024-03-27 22:51 active 362 0 1851554922024726 Teen Wolf goes to College - Romance Novel Hot guys ๐Ÿ—ธ
Sizzling bedroom scenes ๐Ÿ—ธ
Fated Mates ๐Ÿ—ธ
_____

Read a sneak peak:

Chapter 1
Quin

I canโ€™t believe Lou talked me into doing this. At one point sheโ€™s saying how Iโ€™ll go feral if I donโ€™t get out and meet somebody, and the next thing I know Iโ€™m yelling at her about how thatโ€™s not how going feral works. She then tells me that that is exactly how it works and makes up a story about a dog that went crazy because it was tied up all day.

As insulting as it was to compare me to a dog, I have to admit that sheโ€™s not entirely wrong. Iโ€™ve struggled figuring out who I am. Am I my fatherโ€™s daughter as my dad always says? Or, am I the thing that the rest of the world sees me as and that Iโ€™m always trying to suppress?

Either way, my life sucks. I mean, I have everything in life anyone could ask for thanks to my fatherโ€™s wildly successful genetics research company. But, it comes with a trade-off that makes it not worth it.

My father thought he was doing the world a service by curing infertility. And since my mom was infertile, she became the first test subject. Iโ€™m proof that it worked. But it had a side effect that no one could ever have imagined.

My mom is dead because of that side effect. I lock myself away because of that side effect. And, because of it, Iโ€™m scared as hell of the full moon.

Itโ€™s not that I think anything is going to happen to me during a full moon. Thereโ€™s been a lot of full moons since the first time, and I believe in science.

What terrifies me about it is what other people think will happen. If theyโ€™ve heard of me โ€”and who hasnโ€™t heard of me thanks to my showboating father โ€” and they see me out in a full moon, every crazy story theyโ€™ve read turns me into a monster in their eyes.

I donโ€™t want to feel their judgement or terror. Whatโ€™s more, I donโ€™t want to smell it. Iโ€™ve been told that Iโ€™m the only one who notices it, but peopleโ€™s scents are overwhelming. Thatโ€™s part of the reason I lock myself in my dorm room when Iโ€™m not attending class. Well, that and fact that no one at East Tennessee University has recognized me yet and I want it to stay that way.

The only one so far who knows about my condition is Louise, my roommate and first actual friend. I told her after the University matched us and decided that this was the year I would attend. Thanks to my home schooling and inheriting my fatherโ€™s intellectual gifts, Iโ€™ve had a high school equivalency since I was 16 years old. And four years is a long time to figure out what Iโ€™m going to do with my life.

Itโ€™s not like I would ever need to find a job, or that I couldnโ€™t get the equivalent of my intended genetics major just from working with my dad. But, there was one thing I didnโ€™t have and I knew I couldnโ€™t get living how I was. Locked away like in our New York penthouse, I would never have a life. I would never have real friends. I would never have sex.

I wanted sex. During a certain time of the month, it is all I can think about. The full moon might not turn me into a snarling, half-human beast. But, it makes me think sex like I need it to breath. The older I get, the worse it gets.

Is there a chance not leaving my dorm will make me go feral like Lou casually suggested? I donโ€™t think so. Iโ€™ve had a lot more control over things compared to when I was a kid. If this was an alcohol problem instead of what it is, I could say that I havenโ€™t had a drink in years.

But, whether Lou was joking or not, I didnโ€™t want her thinking that me going feral was a possibility. So, after some yelling and fighting, I looked up the only party on campus happening tonight, and dressed for it.

โ€œFinally,โ€ Lou said as I headed to the door.

What killed me was that after all of our arguing, as I left she had a smirk on her face. It was like this was her plan all along and I was the only one who actually got upset. She had manipulated me to go out and get a life. That sneaking little diva!

โ€œAnd I want proof that you didnโ€™t just go to a park and chase squirrels or something.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t chase squirrels!โ€ I protested strongly.

โ€œWhatever! But, when I get back from my date, I want to see a naked guy in your bed and I want to see some shame, Missy. Plenty of it.โ€

โ€œThere will be! There will be plenty of shame, for you. Because of how wrong you were about meโ€ฆ and stuff.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€

โ€œI mean it, Quin.โ€

โ€œMe too.โ€

So now, here I am marching across campus to the only party that my last-minute research turned up. East Tennessee Universityโ€™s football team won against West Tennessee University their cross-state rivals earlier in the day and the football fraternity was throwing a party. Nothing about any of that sounded fun, but Iโ€™m goingโ€ฆ because Lou tricked me into it. So much for me being the smart one.

Fine. Iโ€™ll go. Iโ€™ll get proof that I was there. Then Iโ€™ll go to a coffee shop and read a book on my phone.

I know she mentioned that thing about finding someone naked in my bed, but thereโ€™s no way thatโ€™s going to happen. I couldnโ€™t lose my virginity in a pool full of dicks. Believe me, Iโ€™ve tried. But as soon as anyone gets a good look at me and realizes who I am, they either talk about leashing me in case I turn on them in the middle of sex, or they run for the hills.

No, Iโ€™m going to spend the rest of my life as a sad, lonely virgin. Did I just bum myself out? I think I did. Now Iโ€™m really not in the mood for a party.

Rounding the corner, I could hear the music before the fraternity house came into view. My anger at Lou was still driving me, but its effects were fading fast. The other thing about growing up the way I did was that, I wasnโ€™t very good at human stuff. Coming face-to-face with the reality of what I was doing, I was realizing that there was no way I was going to be able to mingle or cohort or whatever it was that people my age did.

Nope! New plan. I wasnโ€™t going in. I was gonna get my proof that I was here, though. I was gonna walk up to one of the half dozen people standing outside, ask to take a selfie with them and then get out of there as quickly as I could.

Looking around, I saw people smoking, people talking in a circle with red cups, and one guy standing by himself. That made the selection easy. All I had to do was walk up to him, ask to take a selfie, snap it, thank him and go. I could manage that. I wasnโ€™t a complete freak. I could talk to one person.

Tightening my lips, I hardened my resolve and charged over. I wasnโ€™t going to overthink it. I was just going to do it and be done.

โ€œExcuse me, can I get a selfie with you?โ€ I asked the guy with his back to me.

โ€œYou want a selfie with me? Why?โ€ The guy said with an edge to his voice as he turned around.

Woah!

Do you know that feeling when you see something that takes your breath away? Warm prickles start at the back of your hands and shoot up your arms before settling in your face as the heat makes you lightheaded? That was what happened when our eyes met. The guy was beautiful.

His creamy skin contrasted with his jet black hair and pool-blue eyes. His jawline was carved out of marble. There were dimples, so many dimples. And his rippling muscles looked like they had muscles.

More than that, he smelled amazing. There was a sweet musk to him that I had never smelt in my life. It made me drunk just standing there. As his scent wafted off of him, it stripped me of my will. It was like he had leashed me while at the same time awaking the part of me I fought so hard to restrain.

I couldnโ€™t speak and he was clearly waiting for me to. He had asked me a question. What was it? Oh yeah! It was why I wanted a selfie with him, and he seemed upset about it.

Had I made him angry? Was it weird to ask to take a selfie with a complete stranger? It probably was? Shit! What the hell was I thinking?

โ€œSorry,โ€ I sputtered before forcing my legs to move in the opposite direction.

I got two steps away before he spoke again.

โ€œWait! Donโ€™t go.โ€

I stopped.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry. I didnโ€™t mean to be rude. If you want a selfie, Iโ€™ll take one with you.โ€

โ€œNo, thatโ€™s okay,โ€ I said wanting to look at him again but scared that if I did I wouldnโ€™t be able to breathe.

โ€œNo, really. Itโ€™s fine. You can get one. I donโ€™t know why anyone would want one. But, itโ€™s fine. Iโ€™d be happy to take one with you.โ€

That was when I looked at him again. I recognized what he was saying. He was talking like a guy who was used to people asking to take pictures with him. I knew a little about that. Who didnโ€™t want to take their picture with Harlequin Toro, the only wolf shifter in existence?

That was me, though. Why did people ask him for selfies? He was the most amazing-looking guy ever. Did random strangers approach him dazzled by his beauty? It wouldnโ€™t surprise me if they did.

โ€œI, um, wasnโ€™t asking for a selfie because I know who you are. I donโ€™t recognize you. I donโ€™t know who you are,โ€ I explained.

The guy jutted his head back startled. As I stared, his fair skin turned pink.

โ€œOh! Okay. Thenโ€ฆโ€ he shook his head as if trying to shake something loose. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, why do you want a selfie with me?โ€

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t you. It was anybody,โ€ I told him.

โ€œYou wanted to get a selfie with anybody? Why?โ€

I huffed as my infuriating predicament reentered my mind.

โ€œItโ€™s my roommate. She told me that I needed to get out and have fun. She said she needed proofโ€ฆโ€

โ€œAnd the selfie was going to be the proof?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œSo, after you took the selfieโ€ฆ, what? You were gonna go?โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ I admitted suddenly deflating.

The gorgeous guy looked at me like I was the freak that I am. A smile crept across his face. It would have made me feel bad about myself if it didnโ€™t make me want to melt into a puddle in the grass.

โ€œThis is going to sound crazy, but youโ€™re here. Why not go in and actually have fun?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not good at this type of thing. You know, the social thing.โ€

โ€œLuckily, thatโ€™s something Iโ€™m very good at. How about we make a deal? Iโ€™ll give you your selfie as proof for your roommate, but you have to come in and actually try to have a good time. Iโ€™ll introduce you to a couple of people. That way, when your roommate asks you about the night, you wonโ€™t have to lie,โ€ he said his face exploding into dimples.

I stared at him. โ€œWhy would you do that?โ€

He looked at me twisting his head in confusion.

โ€œMaybe Iโ€™m just being nice. Maybe I think youโ€™re cool and that it would be cool to hang out. Maybe Iโ€™m flirting.โ€

A chill shot through me upon hearing the word โ€œflirtingโ€. What was going on? Did this guy like me? Was there something happening between us? Was there going to be a naked guy in my bed full of shame when Lou got home after all?

โ€œUm, okay,โ€ I said sure that I was turning beet-red.

โ€œCage, by the way?โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œMy name.โ€ He stared at me. โ€œAnd your name is?โ€

โ€œOh. Quin.โ€

โ€œCool. I like that name.โ€

โ€œThanks. My parents gave it to me,โ€ I said losing control of my tongue.

Cage laughed.

โ€œI mean, of course my parents gave it to me.โ€

โ€œNot of course. My parents didnโ€™t give me the name Cage.โ€

โ€œWho did? An uncle or somebody?โ€

โ€œNo, I did.โ€

โ€œSo, whatโ€™s your birth name?โ€

Cage looked at me with thoughts rushing through his head. โ€œHow about I take you inside and show you around?โ€

โ€œSo, I guess weโ€™re going to let that question go?โ€

Cage chuckled uncomfortably.

As he led me up the stairs, onto the porch, and then into the frat house, it was hard to take my eyes off of him. When I did, I was surprised by what I saw. I didnโ€™t know what I was expecting, but it wasnโ€™t this. The large living room was sparsely furnished but full of people. Everyone had red cups in their hand and they spoke to each other like they were friends.

โ€œItโ€™s still pretty early,โ€ Cage explained.

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ I said raising my voice over the country-pop music.

โ€œThereโ€™ll be more people later.โ€

โ€œMore than this?โ€ I asked looking around at what felt like a horde.

Cage chuckled. โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œCage!โ€ A thick guy said throwing his arms around Cage spilling some of his drink onto Cageโ€™s shirt. โ€œOh, did I get you?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s okay,โ€ Cage said casually. โ€œDan, this is Quin.โ€

Dan turned to me and stared. โ€œQuin!โ€ he finally said ending the awkwardness. โ€œIs he trying to recruit you?โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ I asked confused.

โ€œIs he trying to get you on the football team?โ€

I stared at him unsure what was happening. Was he being serious? Did he think I was a boy? Itโ€™s not like that mistake hadnโ€™t happened before. On top of everything else, the boob fairy hadnโ€™t exactly been generous to me.

But, even if he did think I was a boy, I would be a small one. Iโ€™m clearly not built like someone who ran full speed into 200-pound men.

โ€œFootball team?โ€

I turned to Cage confused.

Cage smiled. โ€œDonโ€™t pay any attention to Dan. Heโ€™s taken a few too many hits.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re welcome, by the way,โ€ Dan said defensively.

โ€œYou two are on the football team?โ€ I asked putting things together.

Dan dropped his clueless jock act and threw his arms around Cage. โ€œNo. Iโ€™m on the football team. This man is the team.โ€

I looked at Cage for an explanation.

He smiled with humility. โ€œIโ€™m the quarterback.โ€

โ€œHe isnโ€™t just the quarterback,โ€ Dan said mockingly. โ€œHeโ€™s the guy whoโ€™s gonna lead us to a national championship, and then heโ€™s going pro.โ€

โ€œOhhhh! Now I get it. The selfie. You thought I was asking for a selfie because youโ€™re a famous football player.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not a famous football player,โ€ he said quickly.

โ€œHell yeah, heโ€™s famous. There ainโ€™t anybody who doesnโ€™t know who he is,โ€ Dan said proudly.

I looked at Cage for his reaction. Cage looked back at me and chuckled uncomfortably.

โ€œNot everyone knows who I am.โ€

โ€œName me one person who doesnโ€™t,โ€ Dan challenged.

He gave me a knowing smile. โ€œQuin, you want a drink? I think you need a drink. Follow me.โ€

โ€œGood meeting you, Quin,โ€ Dan said before wandering off.

โ€œSo, youโ€™re a quarterback?โ€

โ€œDidnโ€™t you hear? Iโ€™m not just a quarterback, Iโ€™m the team,โ€ Cage said with self-deprecation.

I laughed. โ€œI heard. Are you going to go pro?โ€

โ€œSure,โ€ Cage said half-heartedly before turning to pump beer into two red cups.

โ€œYou donโ€™t sound excited.โ€

โ€œNo. Iโ€™m excited. I canโ€™t wait to play for the NFL. Itโ€™s, ah, everything Iโ€™ve been working towards,โ€ he said handing me a cup and holding up his to cheers with mine. โ€œTo new friends.โ€

I touched his cup and took a drink. โ€œThis beer is awful,โ€ I said looking down at my cup.

Cage laughed. โ€œNo, tell me what you really think.โ€

โ€œI mean that itโ€™s not very good,โ€ I explained.

Cage laughed louder. โ€œYou donโ€™t have much of a filter, do you?โ€

I froze. That wasnโ€™t the first time someone had said that to me. โ€œIs that bad?โ€

โ€œActually, itโ€™s kind of refreshing.โ€

โ€œOh. Okay,โ€ I said falling for him more.

โ€œYou have a nice smile.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t realize I was smiling,โ€ I told him.

โ€œYou are,โ€ he said looking at me with a smile of his own.

โ€œYou too. Itโ€™s very nice,โ€ I said feeling my heart thump and not knowing what to do about it.

Cage stopped smiling and looked into my eyes. God did I want to kiss him.

โ€œI suppose if I ask you if youโ€™re having fun yet, youโ€™ll tell me the truth.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m having fun,โ€ I said moving closer in case he did want to kiss me.

Cage watched me with a devilish look in his eyes. I could have sworn that he was about to move his lips towards mine when he said, โ€œWhy donโ€™t I introduce you to a few more people.โ€

โ€œMore people? Iโ€™ve already met two. How many more people can a person meet in a night?โ€

โ€œHaha. A few more than that,โ€ he said slipping his hand around my shoulders and leading me away.

Feeling his touch set something off in me that I could barely control. It was the part of me that I fought to repress. It was fighting to get out. I knew I should have been doing everything to resist it, but I didnโ€™t want to. With it came a sense of power I had never felt before. I liked it. It made me feelโ€ฆ strong.

In spite of how much I wanted to let go, I did my best to stay with Cage in my present form. He was leading me around the party introducing me to people. He wasnโ€™t kidding about being good at social stuff. Everyone he introduced me to hung on his every word. And, when it was my turn to speak, they hung on my every word, too.

These types of interactions had always been so hard for me. But, balancing on the surface of my spiraling emotions, this time I feltโ€ฆ alive.

What charged me up even more was that Cage took every opportunity to touch me. He touched my shoulder when he introduced me. His pointing finger lightly rested on my forearm when he was emphasizing a point. And, standing shoulder to shoulder as if we were already a couple, he would bump his shoulder against mine when he laughed.

I was on the verge of shifting by the time he was done with me. I knew that should have freaked me out. But instead I thought about what Lou had suggested. What would Cage look like naked in my bed?

With one of his teammates waving his arms around telling a story, I couldnโ€™t take my eyes off of Cage. With his full attention on his friend, Cage subtly retrieved his phone from his pocket and peaked down. Slipping it away quickly, he waited for the arm waving to die down and then looked between his friend and me.

โ€œI hate to say this, but I have to head out,โ€ he said lightly placing his large hand on the back of my arm.

โ€œYes, me too,โ€ I said quickly.

โ€œYeah? Where you headed?โ€ He asked enthusiastically.

โ€œBack to my room.โ€

โ€œWhereโ€™s that?โ€

โ€œPlaza Hall?โ€

โ€œReally? Iโ€™ll go with you,โ€ he said squeezing my arm.

My heart stopped. He was coming with me? Was this it? I couldnโ€™t believe it might finally happen. I swallowed and forced myself to speak.

โ€œCool.โ€

After saying a few goodbyes, the two of us exited into the night. As the cool air surrounded my hot body, I felt giddy and dangerous. I needed to hear his voice. I knew it would anchor me.

Why wasnโ€™t he saying anything? Hadnโ€™t he claimed to be good at stuff like this? I was about to mumble something in desperation when he finally said,

โ€œItโ€™s a clear night.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œYou can see all of the stars.โ€

I looked up. He was right. The night was perfectly clear. There was nothing between us and the light of the full moon. How had I not remembered that tonight was the full moon?

Itโ€™s not like it mattered. I wasnโ€™t a hollowing monster enslaved by it. I hadnโ€™t shifted in years. I had long ago gotten control over myself, over my body. I was Harlequin Toro, human, not some mindless wolfโ€ฆ

โ€œYou cold?โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re shivering.โ€

I was shaking. โ€œI guess Iโ€™m nervous,โ€ I admitted.

โ€œWhat are you nervous about?โ€

My face got hot. โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€

Cage stared at me. โ€œYouโ€™re really pretty. Do you know that?โ€

โ€œSo are you. I mean, youโ€™re good-looking not pretty,โ€ I told him shaking even more.

Cage chuckled. โ€œThanks. Are you happy you came out tonight?โ€

โ€œYeah, definitely,โ€ I said fighting not to show him how much.

โ€œWeโ€™re here,โ€ he said as we approached the door of my building.

โ€œWeโ€™re here,โ€ I repeated my heart pounding. โ€œDo you want to come in?โ€

โ€œCome in?โ€ Cage asked caught off guard.

โ€œYes,โ€ I replied struggling not to pounce him right there.

โ€œAhhhh,โ€ he murmured before the door popped open and a girl came out.

โ€œCage!โ€ She said before wrapping her arms around him and standing on her tiptoes to kiss his lips.

My mouth dropped open in shock. What was going on? What had just happened?

The petite, blonde with angular features turned towards me. โ€œWhoโ€™s this?โ€

โ€œAh, this is Quin. Quin this is Tasha.โ€

Tasha looked at me suspiciously while Cage became uncomfortable.

โ€œTasha is my girlfriend.โ€

โ€œHow do you know Cage?โ€ Tasha asked me.

I was too shocked by everything to speak.

โ€œQuin had asked me for a selfie.โ€

Tasha turned to Cage surprised. โ€œOh. Did you give her one?โ€

โ€œNot yet,โ€ Cage said with a smile.

โ€œI can take it,โ€ Tasha volunteered. โ€œGive me your phone,โ€ she said approaching me with her hand out.

Still speechless, I handed her my phone and stood next to Cage.

โ€œSay cheese,โ€ she said.

โ€œCheese,โ€ Cage replied while I stared back stunned.

โ€œHere you go,โ€ she said handing me back my phone. โ€œCheck it.โ€

I looked down and saw my full humiliation on display. โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œOkay. Letโ€™s go. Iโ€™m hungry,โ€ Tasha said entwining her body with Cageโ€™s and pulling him away.

โ€œIt was nice meeting you, Quin,โ€ he said looking at me as he left.

โ€œNice meetingโ€ฆ you,โ€ I mumbled sure that he could no longer hear me.

I watched as the perfectly suited couple walked off. Of course, he had a girlfriend. And, of course, she looked like that. My heart hurt watching them go.

I canโ€™t believe I thought he wanted to be with me. No one ever wanted to be with me. How could I have been so foolish? How could I think a guy like him would be interested in a girl like me?

Once the two had disappeared into the darkness, I entered the building. Ascending the stairs in a daze, I felt like I was going to explode. Why didnโ€™t anyone ever like me back? Why didnโ€™t Cage like me?

I couldnโ€™t take this anymore. My skin vibrated with a ferocity I hadnโ€™t felt in years. When I finally realized what was going on, it was too late.

โ€œOh no. No, no, no, no, no,โ€ I said in a panic.

As I bound up the stairs, the world around me drifted further away. I needed to lock myself up. I couldnโ€™t believe this. It had been years. Why now? Why here?

Approaching my dorm room door, I smelled the last thing I wanted to smell or expected. Lou was home. Why was she home? Didnโ€™t she say she had a date?

I didnโ€™t want her to see me like this. I didnโ€™t want to terrify her with the truth of who I was. I didnโ€™t want to accidently kill her.

Was this how my mother died? Had I lost control and ripped out her throat? I was too young to remember. But a three-year-old child and a three-year-old wolf are different. If I let it, would the beast inside of me take away another person I cared about?

No, I couldnโ€™t let it. I had to get behind closed doors as quickly as I could. Scrambling for my keys I flung open the door and charged in.

โ€œArenโ€™t you supposed to be out finding yourself a guy?โ€ She said as I rushed by her for my room. โ€œQuin, whatโ€™s wrong?โ€

As my bedroom door closed behind me and I searched for the padlock for the latch I installed, I finally lost control and did what I prayed for years that I wouldnโ€™t do. The feeling was torture. It all came rushing back.

A prickly feeling washed over me igniting every nerve in my body. My muscle clamped into the worst cramp you could imagine. And as my muscles pulled apart and ate itself, my bones snapped under the strain of it.

Mercifully, that was when I passed out. This was how it happened when I was a kid. At least it started that way. Because as a kid, I would black out in one location and wake up naked and covered in blood somewhere else.

My father often tested the blood to make sure none of it was human. It never was. But, every so often pictures of missing cats would end up posted around our upstate New York home.

Our neighbors knew what I was so they had their suspicions but they would never know for sure. The only person to ever see me shift was my father. And it wasnโ€™t until he determined that I, and my wolf, wasnโ€™t a threat that we moved back to the Manhattan apartment where my mother had died.

This shift wasnโ€™t like any I had had when I was a kid, though. This time I woke up in my room in the dark. It felt like one of those instances when you wake up to learn that you canโ€™t move your body. I was conscious, fully conscious. But I was pacing in my room very close to the ground and it felt like I was being taken for a ride.

As much as I tried, I couldnโ€™t stop myself. My dresser whipped by me in rapid succession and as I entertained the sounds around me, I heard a wild panting. Oh no, I was in it. I was the monster.

The only way I had been able to come to terms with who I was was by convincing myself that I wasnโ€™t it and it wasnโ€™t me. I wasnโ€™t the one who killed my mother. It was. It was dangerous and brutal. I was not.

Yet, here I was disproving everything I held onto for my own sanity. I was awake, though not in control, and I was experiencing the world around me as if it were my own.

โ€œQuin, are you alright?โ€ a faint voice said just outside my door.

As if set on fire, my wolf went wild. It bulleted to the door and attacked it as if fighting to break through.

โ€œOh no, the latch. I didnโ€™t lock it,โ€ I remembered flooded with dread.

As soon as I said it, my eyes turned towards the door handle and it clawed at it. It heard me and it was fighting to get out. If it got out it would kill Lou. I was sure of it. It would kill everyone in its path until someone put it down or it ran away.

This was my greatest nightmare come true. It was why I locked myself away never wanting to come out. It was everything I had feared.

Wait! It heard me! Thatโ€™s how it knew to go after the lock. If it heard me say that, thenโ€ฆ

โ€œStop it! You will not attack my friend. You wonโ€™t do to her what you did to my mother!โ€

As if frozen in place, it stopped. Standing still, sadness washed through my mind. It wasnโ€™t me feeling it. It was the wolf. It was thinking about what it had done to my mom. Regret filled it. Somehow I knew it hadnโ€™t meant to. And as if calmed by the tragedy, it slowly back away from the door and whimpered.

My wolf was crying. It knew how much it had lost that day as much as I did. It also knew that it was her fault. Both of us had grown up without a mother because of it. Death hadnโ€™t been my wolfโ€™s intention. It had acted impulsively and unexpected things had happened.

Without asking it to, the wolf walked in front of my full length mirror. It was dark, but the wolfโ€™s eyes were more sensitive than mine. I could make out her reflection clearly. I was 20 and just approaching adulthood. The wolf staring back at me was much older than that.

I had only seen video of it before. Back then it was of a much younger wolf. This one looked calmer and maybe even a little wiser than the one pacing back and forth in my fatherโ€™s safety room. Was it different than the one that had terrorized my world all of those years ago?

Maybe it was. Maybe I didnโ€™t know this wolf at all. Maybe I didnโ€™t know myself. Who would I be if I wasnโ€™t so scared of what I would become?

*****

Get it now to keep reading!
_______

AUDIOBOOK LISTENERS - Get this audiobook for free by signing up for a free trial of Audible by clicking here: https://adbl.co/3i37z85 LEARN_MORE https://www.amazon.com/dp/B099X8BP5J?maas=maas_adg 337827106228528 Alex Anders Author Page https://facebook.com/AlexAndersBooks 923 0 1,464,232,721,163,908 2024-03-26 02:00 regular_page eligible 0 0 NONE 0 0 1 0 Learn more 0 Alex Anders Author Page 6588946098953 amazon.com NONE image Her Caged Wolf: Fated Mates Wolf Shifter Romance - Anthology (Wolf Falls Book 1) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B099X8BP5J?maas=maas_adg_4AABD90F973DC289C878EDA4835C7908_afap_abs&ref_=aa_maas&tag=maas 2024-03-26 10:53 https://scontent-sjc3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/434315455_2041932286185340_4719984855678196386_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_s60x60&_nc_cat=107&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=lTDQHiF8P8AAX9ey-IL&_nc_ht=scontent-sjc3-1.xx&oh=00_AfDNzJsRHlik23B5SwEoo00jrVoEOnDgy37c6E5xTN_d2A&oe=6609D447 person_profile 0 Alex Anders Author Page https://scontent-sjc3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/433142266_731609059059277_477795833077092433_n.jpg?_nc_cat=104&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=bnMvpE-FRTwAX_IPq8r&_nc_ht=scontent-sjc3-1.xx&oh=00_AfBYjkWMORi3NeYTOKKS1T_RLnAUWjQWdxif2Rba_GF8gA&oe=6608E1BF 0 3 Alex Anders Author Page 0 0 2024-03-26 02:00 View Edit
