Yes | 2024-03-27 22:52 | active | 362 | 0 | 948888387240527 | ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅDownload and search book ID: 9792 | My sister's boyfriend turned out to be my mate! As he rejected me, I retaliated by cutting off all contact with the packโฆ
Chapter 1: Ayla
โAyla, is dinner ready? No more delay. Kylee and Theo will be soon here!โ
โYes, mom.โ I sighed hearing my mother's impatient urging.
Kylee is my little sister, and Theo is her mate as well as our future Alpha. It is said that they had been together for over a year, and today is the first Kylee has brought her mate home. I was so happy for her.
Our current Alpha, Alpha Torin, was a good leader, a fair leader, and a good man. I knew he had a son, but I had never met him before.
But I had heard that his son, Theo, was promising to be just as good an Alpha as his father. So I really couldnโt have been more relieved that he was my sisterโs mate. She would be properly looked after and taken care of, and she would be happy.
I was pulling the chicken out of the oven when I saw my mother rushing past me, excitedly shouting towards the door, โThey're here.โ
After my father passed away, my mother had become an alcoholic. But she always managed to look presentable in front of Kylee. For example, today, she was not only dressed neatly, but even used mouthwash.

I was still transferring the food when I heard the front door open and the squeals of my mother and sister as they embraced. I finished my task and moved the dishes to the dining room table that was already set neatly. I smiled at my presentation and excitedly hurried to the living room.

I froze at the threshold. A scent overwhelmed my senses, causing my stomach to knot and my heart to race.

The tall, broad man standing next to my sister turned toward me and we locked eyes.

Mate.

I practically gagged trying to stifle the word from slipping from my mouth.

What was happening?

This was my sisterโs mate.

Not mine.

This man was fated to Kylee.

So why was I having this reaction?

Better questionโฆ

Why did HE seem to be having the same reaction?

His eyes were wide, pupils dilated, and they held my gaze with a vice-like grip as he, too, seemed frozen to where he stood.

Dasha, my wolf, bounced excitedly in my head, recognizing him and his wolf just as I was. It took a minute for her to understand the situation, but once she did, she started whimpering in the back of my mind.

This couldnโt be happening.

What was happening?

I forced myself to address the situation as a whole. Fine, this was happening. Now, what is the best way to handle the situation? I wasnโt going to break my sisterโs heart. Absolutely not. I wouldnโt let him either. Not right now. Weโll just get through dinner, and Iโll find a way to speak with him in private later.

I cleared my throat and plastered a smile on my face.

โKylee, Iโm so excited youโre home,โ I said, opening my arms so she could jump into them like she had since she was little.

โIโve missed you, sis,โ she said.

โIโve missed you, too,โ I said quietly.

We separated, and she turned to the male behind her. โTheo, this is my sister, Ayla. Ayla, this is my mate, Theo.โ

Theoโs hands were clenched into fists, and he forced a tight-jawed smile toward me. At least I was better at faking it them him. Geesh.

I nodded to him with a broad smile. I knew it didnโt reach my eyes, but at least Ma and Kylee wouldnโt notice.

โItโs lovely to meet you, Theo,โ I said. โDinner is ready in the dining room. Why donโt you guys go take a seat, and Iโll be right there. I need to tend to dessert first.โ

โDonโt take too long,โ Kylee said brightly. โWe have some big news, and I donโt think I can wait much longer.โ

โI promise Iโll be right there,โ I assured her as I rubbed her shoulder.

Kylee grabbed Ma by the arm and led her to the dining room. Theo followed a few steps behind. He had to pass me to get through. Right as he approached, I turned my body to ensure we didnโt touch. He paused in front of me for a moment. I looked up to meet his eyes.

There was anger, confusion, desire, and possibly even hurt reflecting in his eyes that I couldnโt help but notice were the color of honey. He had questions. I subtly shook my head at him. Hoping and silently begging that he knew we couldnโt do this here.

The sound of Kyleeโs laugh from the other room made me jump and then quickly retreat to the kitchen. I grabbed the homemade cheesecake from the fridge and set it on the counter for later.

I listened to the others conversing in the next room and took several deep breaths. I felt a lump start to form in my throat and quickly pushed it down. This wasnโt the time to cry.

I was almost to the dining room when I heard the last part of what Kylee was saying, and again, I was left frozen at the threshold.

โโฆ our mating ceremony is in three months.โ Kylee looked up at me. โOh, Ayla, Iโm sorry. I just couldnโt hold back any longer. Arenโt you happy for us?โ

I put the same fake smile back on. โOf course Iโm happy for you,โ I said. โYou deserve the best.โ

I took my seat at the table, ignoring the fact that I was left sitting directly across from Theo. His eyes were boring into me, and my face felt like it was on fire. I started dishing out food and passing plates. I didnโt say much over dinner. Instead, I just listened to Kylee and Ma talk about all the ideas they had for the mating ceremony. Theo didnโt say much either but slowly started to do a better job hiding his discomfort with the situation.

It took everything to ignore the touches they shared, pushing down the jealousy that kept surging through me.
After dinner, while they were still talking, I made an excuse to slip out through the back door.

I stood on the porch and took several deep breaths. I released a string of curses.
โWhat is happening? Why is this happening? This ISNโT happening,โ I whispered with the force of a yell.

โOur mate.โ Dasha insisted.

โNo, heโs not,โ I said back to her. โHeโs Kyleeโs. There must be some kind of mistake.โ

All of a sudden, I stiffened as a mouthwatering scent hit my nose. I knew who was standing behind me.

Chapter 2: Theo
I fought against the urges her scent was influencing as I stalked up to her. But more importantly, the urge to grab her and take her against the nearest tree. My wolf was going crazy about the idea, but he would learn fast that that was never going to happen.

I wouldnโt accept her.

Knowing what I knew about her, that would never happen.

She turned to face me.

โThis wonโt happen,โ I spat out before she had a chance to speak.
Her jaw clenched, and her silvery-gray eyes stared into mine for a few short moments. But I couldnโt read a thing behind them.

โI absolutely agree,โ she stated evenly.

My wolf growled and snarled inside me, demanding to know what I was doing. I pushed down the hurt that hit me when she didnโt fight me. Her reaction just proved why this needed to be done. I could never be with someone so cold and self-absorbed as her. There was no way someone like her could ever be my Luna.

โDonโt know her.โ Kieran yelled in my head.

I knew enough.

โKylee is my mate. Not you. I, Theo Arden, future Alpha of the Greytooth Pack, reject you, Ayla Garner, as my mate and Luna.โ Kieran was snapping his teeth, pushing to take control to stop this.

โI, Ayla Garner, accept your rejection and relinquish my claim as your mate and Luna.โ

My wolf howled in pain. A pain that was mirrored within me as it felt like my heart was being ripped apart. It was the bond breaking. Releasing me from the tie that bound us together.
She stood there like nothing happened.

How could she stand there like nothing had happened?

She really didnโt feel anything, did she? It was so easy for her to let us go.

โMate wants me.โ

I grimaced. He meant her wolf. Her wolf wanted mine. He could sense her. She was even denying her wolf. I couldnโt stand it anymore. I needed to get away from her.

I stormed back into the house, returning to the woman the goddess should have made my mate. I returned to the dining room to find her mother and her still deep in conversation. I was grateful she hadnโt seemed to notice my absence or the change in my mood. It wasnโt surprising. She was excited about seeing her family and sharing the news with them.

I had been, too, until her sister walked into the room. The scent had engulfed me, driving me to seek out the source like a lifeline. When I saw her, her beauty took my breath away. She was petit but strong, with long legs and perfect curves. She had a mass of caramel-blonde hair that cascaded over her shoulders, framing a face with plump lips and intense gray eyes that shined green in the light. I couldnโt help but want her. I recognized who she was to me immediately.

But then I noticed her narrow nose and soft jawline were familiar. Her fair skin had a sun-kissed glow that I had always found attractive. Once I realized she had similar features to Kylee, I knew this was her sister, Ayla.

Kylee had told me on many occasions how her sister had changed after the death of their father. She was there for Kylee at first, but in less than a year, she started spending all her time away from home. She ended up dropping out of the private school her parents had worked so hard to send her to. Eventually, Kylee lost track of what she was doing with her life.

Kylee was there for her when she was around, trying to be supportive. But she wasnโt the sister she used to love. What bothered her most was Aylaโs treatment of their mother. Ayla still lived in the house with her, but Kylee always got the impression that helping their mother was just a burden. She worried their mother would be left with no one to take care of her, and she wasnโt in the best of health anymore.

โI have an idea,โ I interrupted. They both looked up at me expectantly. โWhy doesnโt your mother come to stay with us for a while? At least until the ceremony? We have the room in the packhouse, and Iโm sure you and my mother would appreciate the extra input.โ

Both their faces lit up.

โReally? We can do that?โ Kylee said happily.

โOf course,โ I said with a smile.

โThank you.โ

Kylee jumped up from the table and threw her arms around me, kissing me sweetly. I ignored the growls coming from Kieran. Seeing their reaction told me I had made the exact right decision. Despite what the burning in my chest told me.

This was who I was supposed to be with. Not Ayla.

โKeep saying. Maybe believe.โ

I told him to shut up, and he retreated into the back of my mind, cutting himself off from me.

He would get over it. Once the bond was completely severed, he would understand this was the right thing for us and the pack.

Chapter 3: Ayla
I had managed to get myself together enough to rejoin my family. The pain that seared through me from Theoโs rejection and my subsequent acceptance almost brought me to my knees. It took all of my strength to keep my body from shaking, praying he didnโt notice the blood coming from my palms. I had clenched my fists so hard trying to stay on my feet that I broke the skin.

When he finally left, I released the sob that was the only thing capable of coming out of my mouth. But I didnโt let the tears fall. Not yet. They couldnโt know.

So, I steadied my breathing and went back into my house. I was surprised to find that Kylee and Ma werenโt in the dining room anymore. They werenโt in the living room either. But Theo was.

โTheyโre in your motherโs room packing,โ he said coldly.

โPacking?โ What was he talking about?

He stepped closer to me, lowering his voice. โI think itโs best that you keep your distance from Kylee for a while. We donโt want her finding out about this. But I know sheโll want her mother to be a part of the ceremony planning. So sheโs coming back with us.โ

I felt like he just slapped me in the face. As if I would ever tell her. Thatโs why I was doing this. So that I wouldnโt break my baby sisterโs heart. I gave him what he wanted, and now he was going to keep me from my family?

Dasha was confused and in pain, whimpering in my head because she didnโt understand how he could be so cruel to us.

โIf thatโs what you think is best,โ I said to Theo through gritted teeth.

โKylee,โ he called out, not breaking eye contact. โLetโs get going.โ

My sister came prancing into the room. โAlready?โ

โItโs getting late. Letโs head to the hotel for the night. Weโll swing by in the morning to pick up your mother.โ

โOkay,โ she said brightly before turning to me. โWhat about you, Ayla? Youโre coming with, too, right?โ

I opened my mouth to speak, but Theo decided to answer for me.

โWe were just talking about that. Ayla has some things going on with work and canโt get away.โ

I gave her a tight smile. โYes, Iโm sorry. But I will try to come out there as soon as I can.โ

โOh, okay, I understand. But Iโll make sure we have a room ready for you whenever you can come.โ

โOf course. I canโt wait,โ I said, my heart breaking again, knowing Theo wouldnโt allow me to be there with her.

We all said our goodbyes, and they left. Ma was still standing at the window watching them drive off when I went to clean up the dishes in the kitchen. She finally came in behind me and started opening another bottle of wine. We had gone through four during dinner already. And I barely touched my glass.

โMa, youโve had enough for the night,โ I said calmly.

โOh, come on. Itโs a celebration,โ Ma said. โItโs not every day you find out your baby is going to be a Luna.โ

โMa, you can celebrate more tomorrow. You need to finish packing,โ I said, gently taking the bottle from her hand. โIโm sure Kylee and Theo will be here first thing in the morning.โ

โWe can celebrate together while you help me pack,โ she said, grabbing the bottle back from me. โThen Iโll help you pack.โ

I winced. This wasnโt going to end well. โIโm not coming, Ma.โ

She stopped with the glass halfway to her lips. โWhat do you mean youโre not coming?โ she asked with a pout. โYou have to be there. Kylee is going to be mated. I told her we would help pay for the ceremony.โ

I winced again. She meant me. I would be helping pay for the ceremony. Ma didnโt have a penny to her name.

โThis is a big deal. Donโt be so selfish, Ayla.โ

Her words stung, but they werenโt unexpected. This was kind of the norm when she got like this. I know she didnโt really mean it. At least, she wouldnโt mean it when she was sober. I got her into her bedroom and set her on the bed. I changed her into her nightgown and tucked her in.

She was asleep in seconds. I hurried through the rest of her packing. Stuffing two large suitcases as full as I could before carrying them out to the living room. Then I locked the front door, finished the last of the dishes, and slipped out into the backyard.

I stripped off my clothes as I headed for the forest, desperate to get under its protective shadows. As soon as I passed the treeline, I shifted, taking off at full speed. I let Dasha feel all the pain. I didnโt try to hold her back anymore.

We would mourn the loss of our fated mate. The loss of the one person who was supposed to see us for who we were. The one person who was supposed to always put us first, without demands or expectations. We would mourn the loss of never getting to experience that.
But we wouldnโt mourn him.

We ran until we could barely breathe. Until Dasha stopped at the edge of our pond โ our place of solace โ and let out a heartwrenching howl into the night air. Shifting at the end as she retreated back into my mind, out of reach to heal her broken heart, while I let the torrent of tears finally fall.

I walked into the water, curling into myself as the sobs wracked my body, intensifying the burn that was still there from our bond being ripped from my heart.

I submerged myself completely, washing my body clean of Theo, the mate bond, and every dream of finding my soulmate.

In the midst of this pain I drifted off to sleep.
The next morning.
When I made it back to the house, there was no one there. My mother had been taken away by them.
I was standing in an empty room in an empty house. The silence was deafening. And it all came crashing down. I sank to my knees, begging the goddess to just let it all go away, just for a little while. I just wanted to feel numb.

I lost track of how long I sat in that spot, staring without seeing. I didnโt even know Zeff was there until I felt him grip my arms.

โAyls, what happened? Whatโs wrong?โ he asked, brushing hair out of my face, forcing me to look at him. โAyla, what is going on?โ

โI found my mate,โ I said, the corner of my mouth tipping up mockingly. โHeโs scheduled to be mated to my sister.โ

โWhat?โ Zeff exclaimed, anger and concern twisting his handsome features.

Zeff was a good man. He had been there for me when no one else was. He was the only person who knew everything I went through. And here he was, listening to me tell him about meeting Theo, the mating ceremony, and my rejection. Why couldnโt he have been my mate? He should have been.

โCome on,โ he said, lifting me up. โYouโre coming to stay with me.โ

I didnโt protest. The goddess had given me this one little blessing. I was numb. Zeff held me up by my waist and led me out to his car. He tucked me into the passenger seat and disappeared into the house again, only to emerge a few minutes later with a duffel bag in hand.

He pulled out and drove us the twenty minutes to his house. Just like before, he helped me inside, this time sitting me on the big, comfy leather couch in his living room.

He came and sat next to me, putting an arm over my shoulder and pulling me into him. I let myself relax some. This was the first thing since Theo walked into my life that felt normal, felt comfortable. He leaned his head on mine, rubbing his fingers along my arm.

โAyla. Youโre going to deal with this โ weโre going to deal with this together. Screw him, okay. Heโs a dirtbag. You deserve so much better than some fool who doesnโt see how incredible you are.โ

I wanted to roll my eyes, but it wasnโt just about him.

โHe took my family, Zeff. I would have gotten over him just rejecting me because of Kylee. At least she would be safe and happy.โ

โNo. They either treat you like a servant or a bank. They donโt care what their actions do to you as long as they keep getting what they want."

โZeff...But they were my familyโ I wanted to contradict him, but I knew he was right.

โGet over him.โ He took a step toward me, reaching up to hold my chin. โHeโs not the only one who can take care of you, Ayla. He may be foolish enough not to want you, but Iโm not.โ

My breath caught in my throat. He had told me about his feelings before, but we both avoided going down that road with each other. We knew we could find our fated mates at any time, and we didnโt want to deny each other that.

โMove in here with me, Ayls,โ Zeff said. โThereโs nothing stopping us now.โ

โZeff, you still have a mate out there somewhere.โ

โAyla, stop. Iโm thirty-four and well-traveled. If I was going to find her, I would have long before now. We both know that.โ

Suddenly his lips were on mine. I was shocked, but mostly because it felt good. I felt wanted. I kissed him back, not wanting to give that feeling up. I leaned into him โ until Dasha came charging to the forefront, growling and snarling that someone who wasnโt our mate was touching us.

I ripped myself from Zeffโs embrace. Breathing heavily, the pain of the severed bond renewed. I clutched my chest.

โAyla.โ

โI canโt. The bond. Itโs still there. It hasnโt faded yet.โ

Zeff pulled me into his arms. โOkay. Itโs okay. We can wait. Weโll take it slow.โ

I rested my head on his chest. โOkay.โ

He squeezed me tighter. I still didnโt know if we could make this work, but I wanted to try.

I stayed with the Zeff, and it was quiet. Until a week later, when Theo burst in.

Chapter 4: Theo
It had been a week since I had gone home with Kylee. Seven days and a hundred miles away, and the bond was still there. The burning in my chest wouldnโt go away. I didnโt understand and it was annoying.

More important is Kieran. He had spent the whole week giving me the silent treatment, except when Kylee was around. Then all he did was growl and snarl. It was getting exhausting.

I had taken to holing up in my office most of the time. I didnโt want to snap at Kylee, or her mother, which had become hard to avoid by the third day. I was glad I had a good reason for me being so busy all of a sudden.

Alpha was sick. He was diagnosed with a progressive disease almost a year ago. So, he decided it was time to hand the title down to me. It wasnโt official yet. We were planning on making the change at the same time as Kyleeโs and my mating ceremony. Actually, thatโs why I decided to make Kylee my official mate. Alphaโs were always stronger with a strong Luna by their side. With the circumstances of my fatherโs abdication, our pack needed to be as strong as possible.

But there was still a lot to take care of and a lot I had to learn about being an Alpha before that time. So it wasnโt hard to convince her that it was the stress that was causing me to be distant.

But this morning, I'm driving myself to Kylee's house. I promised to help her retrieve her mother's necklace, which she wanted to wear during our mating ceremony.

In addition, if I couldnโt completely sever the bond between me and Ayla, Kieran could end up taking control and stop me from marking Kylee.
So, once I got the necklace, Iโd reject Ayla again, making sure it stuck this time, and Iโd go back home.

When I pulled up to the house, something twisted in my gut. When I step into the house, her invigorating scent of oranges and cloves invaded my nostrils, but it wasnโt nearly as strong as it should have been.
I realize Ayla wasn't home.
Instead, there was another smell in Ayla's room.
The scent was male. It was faint, he wasnโt here long, but mixed in with the distinctive scent of my mate, I could pick it out anywhere. From the trail, it seemed as if he was the one who packed up her things.

I stormed out of the house. Tossing the jewelry box in the passenger seat, I took my phone out and searched for the number for the publishing house Kylee said Ayla worked for.
I got another address that Ayla had added to her personal profile from the receptionist.

I followed the GPS to the address, pulling into the drive of a large, two-story house in a nice neighborhood. Parking half on the lawn, I didnโt even close the car door before taking the front steps two at a time.

I banged on the door until I heard movement inside. A man opened it. It was the male I smelled in Aylaโs room. Before he could say anything, I lunged at him, my hands grabbing the front of his shirt and practically lifting him off the ground.

โWhat have you done with her? I smell her all over you. Where is she?โ

He pushed me off him, his eyes glaring at me with recognition and disdain.

โYou must be Theo.โ

โWhat is going on?โ Aylaโs voice floated down to me as she ran down the stairs. She froze halfway down the moment she laid eyes on me. โWhat are you doing here?โ

A silk robe hung open, revealing the shorts and cut-off tank top she wore underneath, her caramel-colored hair flowing loosely around her shoulders. She was gorgeous. And clearly not in distress. I took a step toward her as my rage grew.

โWhat are you doing here?โ I spat back.

โThatโs none of your concern,โ the male interjected.

I turned on him again, a rumbling growl emanating from my chest, my claws extending. I was ready to rip his throat out.

โStop,โ Ayla yelled, coming the rest of the way down the stairs and stepping between the two of us. โZeff, go to work.โ

โAbsolutely not. Iโm not leaving you here with him. Not in the state heโs in.โ

โI would never hurt her.โ Kieran was ready to burst from my skin. How dare this dirtbag think we would ever lay a hand on her.

โWe both know thatโs crap.โ

โZeff, I said go.โ Her expression softened a little. โIโll call you later.โ

She would.

The Zeff guy shot me another hate-filled look before exiting out the open front door. We stood in silence until the sound of his engine faded.

โAre you dating him?โ

Her eyes went wide, then narrowed as she took a step forward. โWhat I do with a male โ or anyone for that matter โ is none of your business.โ

โIt isnโt.โ Electricity passed through the air between us. โHe has no right to put his hands on you.โ

โHe does if I want him to,โ she yelled, not only holding her ground against the alpha energy I was exuding but taking another step toward me. โI donโt belong to anyone, remember? I have no mate.โ

I lost it. My hand was around her neck and my mouth was on hers before I even knew what I had done. But I didnโt stop. I couldnโt stop. Sparks of intense electricity shot through me, invigorating all my senses. I pushed her to open for me, my tongue seeking hers. Goddess, she tasted so good. She returned the kiss, her arousal mingling in the air.

โMINE.โ

She pushed me off her with force.

I took a step toward her again but she backed away.

โDonโt you hurt Kylee like this.โ

โLike you care about your sister getting hurt,โ I spat, but for some reason, I instantly regretted it. But I couldnโt take it back. I wouldnโt take it back.

โExcuse me?โ Pure rage radiated off of her, her eyes turning an icy blue.

โYou abandoned Kylee a long time ago. You disappeared all the time, leaving her alone with a mother who was struggling to keep everything together.โ

Aylaโs face paled. Every ounce of anger seemed to drain from her instantly, that blue fire fading from her eyes.

She almost went completely limp in front of me, stumbling until her back hit the wall. Her faรงade cracked.

โThatโs what she told you? She said that?โ her voice was almost a whisper.

Kieran was going insane in my head, telling me to shut up, to just stop talking. Urging me to stop hurting her. Because I was hurting her. I had struck a nerve, a very deep one, and I wouldnโt stop. She had to break the bond. Once and for all. If it meant I had to break her to do it, I would.

โShe told me everything. She told me how you would keep things from her and your mother. That you would be out at all hours of the night when you were a teenager. How you dropped out of high school, waisting the tuition your parents worked so hard for.โ

โWhat?โ

โI could never be with someone as cold and heartless as you.โ

Aylaโs head snapped up. Her eyes a steely gray as she resolved herself to something I couldnโt figure out but would soon find out.

โI, Ayla Garner, reject you, Theo Arden, as my mate. I relinquish my claim as your mate and Luna.โ

I gritted my teeth as Kieran howled in my head, screaming for me not to accept it.

โI, Theo Arden, accept your rejection.โ The pain in my chest amplified, but I could still feel the bond. โWeโve done this before. Itโs not working.โ

โTell your wolf to accept it,โ Ayla said with a crack in her voice.

The muscles in my jaw tightened to a point I thought my teeth would shatter. The noise in my head from Kieran becoming almost unbearable.

โHe wonโt.โ

โMake him,โ she forced out.

โI canโt.โ

โHe doesnโt have a choice. Iโll never be with him, and neither will she,โ Ayla said, tears threatening to fall from her eyes.

I could feel the pain he felt. It was excruciating. I told him it would end if he just accepted, but he wouldnโt give in. He was an Alpha. He was as strong as me. Iโd never overpower him on this. Ayla must have sensed my stalemate. Or her wolf did and told her because she pulled herself from against the wall, standing up straight again.

โI, Ayla Garner, cut my ties to Alpha Torinโฆโ

โWhat are you doing?โ There was desperation in my voice. She couldnโt do this. I moved to stop her.

โAnd the Greytooth Pack.โ

โNo.โ I fell to a knee, feeling the invisible tether that united pack members with their Alpha splinter. Kieran was pounding against the barriers of my control, putting all his might into taking over the shift. I knew I was on the verge.

โFrom this day forth, I am a rogue.โ She took an unsteady step toward me, silent tears rolling freely down her face. โNow get out.โ

She had used my fatherโs name. Either of our names would have worked in the limbo state we were currently in. But she used my fatherโs. There was nothing I could do to stop her. Nothing I could do to fight the separation. She knew exactly what she was doing.

If my wolf wouldnโt sever the mate bond, she would remove herself from any control I had over her.

With one final, agonizing look, she walked away, disappearing upstairs.

I took in a ragged breath of air. Ayla now had until midnight to be out of our territory. If I caught her on our land after that, I would have to murder her. Mate bond or not. She was a rogue now. It was our laws.

Kieran had finally gone still in my mind.

โMateโs gone.โ

Did he mean Ayla or her wolf?

โDasha. Mateโs name is Dasha. Dashaโs gone.โ

Realization hit me and panic set in. Her wolf was gone. The pain was too much. She had retreated deep into the recesses of Aylaโs subconscious. Ayla wouldnโt be able to call on her. She wouldnโt be able to shift. She wouldnโt be able to heal.

She was a rogue without a wolf. She couldnโt protect herself.

I had to get as far away from her as possible.

I dragged myself back to my feet, forcing them to walk out the door.

Chapter 5: Ayla
The moment the door was closed, I sank to the floor. It was no longer sobs that escaped my body but soul-shattering screams.

She said I abandoned her.

Theo made it sound like I spent my teen years partying and getting into trouble. She said I dropped out of high school.

She said I wasnโt a sister to her.

The betrayal was soul-crushing.

I had given up everything for them.

I screamed and let the tears flow freely until my body ached. As soon as it felt like I could breathe without being stabbed by a red-hot dagger, I pulled myself up and started moving. I only had a few hours to get my things and get out of Greytooth territory.

I had made myself a rogue. I didnโt have a pack anymore. And I had no idea where I was going to go. All the borders on this side of the territory sat right against other pack lands. To get out of one, Iโd have to enter another. But it was my only option. Trying to get to unclaimed territory was too risky. I would have better luck on foreign pack land than on the land I just severed ties to.

After leaving a note for Zeff, I packed up and drove away.

The Greytooth Pack may not be the largest in population, but they had one of the biggest territories. The closest border crossing was nearly two hours away. And I needed to be far away before Zeff got home. I couldnโt have him tracking me down.

Especially since I didnโt give him much of an explanation.

But it was better this way. I wasnโt going to risk him cutting ties and going rogue as well. Because he would. He would hold Theo responsible, and he would never stay in a pack with an alpha he didnโt respect, let alone hate. This way, the note I left would have just made it seem like I got cold feet about us being together.

I drove to the outskirts of town and got on the highway. From there, it was practically a straight shot to the border. I was grateful at first, but after about an hour, I realized the monotonous ride only left my mind wondering and worrying and thinking about things I didnโt need to think about.

When Theo found me in the yard that first day, I had no idea what he would say. His initial reaction to our meeting had me thinking he would pursue the pairing. But then his increasingly icy demeanor throughout the evening made it seem like he was thinking along the same lines I was. He wasnโt going to hurt Kylee for someone he didnโt know.

He loved her. She loved him. I had no idea who he was, nor he I. We could reject each other and just go on our way. Neither one of us would have to break Kyleeโs heart. I thought he was keeping me from my family to be cruel. Or maybe to make things easier for both of us.

But today, his words revealed a different motive. He didnโt reject me for Kylee. He rejected me because of her. Because he believed what she said and painted me as some coldhearted delinquent. But why? I just couldnโt figure that out.

Dad died in a gas explosion along with my aunt and uncle ten years ago. I was fourteen, and Kylee was nine. Our thirteen-year-old cousin, Mina, came to live with us for a while after their deaths. Ma was hit pretty hard by the loss, so the three of us quickly started taking care of each other. We spent every spare minute with each other. Then our financial situation changed. Kylee was entirely too young, and Mina had been through enough losing both her parents for me to put that on her. So, it was up to me to keep food on the table and a roof over our heads.

But I was still fourteen. Finding jobs that paid enough to support a family of four at the age of fourteen was non-existent. I would need to work multiple jobs, and there just wasnโt enough time in the day. So, I approached the headmaster at my private high school and confided my situation with him. I was desperate not to drop out or risk my grades dropping and losing my scholarship. My parents didnโt pay a dime of my tuition.

Headmaster Fordham was a miracle worker. He helped me test out of over eighty percent of my academic requirements by the end of my freshman year. I only had to take four summer classes to graduate a week after my fifteenth birthday. I was even able to broker a deal with him that would set the remaining three years of my scholarship fund aside for Kylee when it came time for her to attend high school.

I still ended up working multiple jobs for several years. But no matter what, I always tried to be there for Kylee as much as possible.

Everything I did was for her.

I completely lost touch with all of my school friends. I never partied. I barely socialized. The jobs I held were really the only place that happened. But I was home to take her to school every morning, and I ensured I had at least an hour to help her with her homework almost every day.

I didnโt discuss the lengths I went to with Kylee. I didnโt want her to feel bad or that it was her fault. And I didnโt want her to see what Ma was going through. She was struggling to keep any job. She was drinking daily. There were even a couple of times she racked up gambling debts that put us in some scary situations.

But I never let Kylee see any of that. It was my job to protect them.

There was so much more that didnโt add up with what Theo had said. But I didnโt get to think about it further.

A searing pain shot through my chest, making my vision go white at the edges, blinding me to a point I almost missed the figure standing in the road before me.

My heart jumped into my chest. I turned the wheel as sharp as I could, slamming on the brakes to avoid hitting them head-on. The moment I did it, I felt foolish. Within seconds, I was spinning through the air and sliding down an embankment.

When the vehicle came to a stop, I was upside down. I registered the smell of blood, but everything was blurry. I didnโt feel significant pain, so I didnโt think the blood was coming from me.

The person on the road!

I scrambled out of the car and up the incline. Without Dasha, I couldnโt see well in the dark, but I could see a blurry figure moving toward me.

โAre you okay?โ I called.

I didnโt catch what they were saying because I suddenly felt the world falling out from beneath my feet, and everything went dark.

Chapter 6: Theo
I said I would break her if that was what it took.

And I certainly followed through with that.

Aylaโs hard exterior had cracked and shattered before me.

I had driven over an hour, and my stomach was still in knots. So much so that I had to stop to throw up at one point. Guilt tore at me.

I really had been cruel to her.

Especially since it turned out it wasnโt even her fault the bond hadnโt broken. She and Dasha had accepted my rejection. They had done what I needed them to do. Ayla had stayed away from Kylee and me. She hadnโt tried to be around them. From what I could tell, she hadnโt even called Kylee like she used to. And how did I repay her? By ripping her apart with every intention of doing as much damage as possible.

It was my wolf that was still hanging on. It was Kieran who kept us in a constant state of heartache. Kept Ayla in a constant state of pain.

And then she had to go and do something foolish and cut herself out of the pack. She was completely lost to us now. The only thing I could do was tell myself it was what I wanted. It was the only way to get rid of the temptation and put enough distance between us until Kylee and I were marked and mated and leading our pack.

Every time I said it, Kieran was there to argue.

By the time I pulled up to the packhouse, I was so pissed that anyone around instantly took a wide birth. My aura was probably so intense that I was making everyone physically uncomfortable, but I really didnโt care.

I was going to head to my office but decided against it. Too many people had access to me there, and I really didnโt need anyone coming around.

What I needed was to work off some of this rage and pent-up energy.

I made a beeline for the private training room in the wing of the packhouse reserved for ranking members of the pack. I was relieved to find it empty, tugging my shirt over my head and immediately heading to the punching bag in the corner.

I had worked up a sweat when Briggs entered the room. Walking over to me with his usual swagger, his arms crossed over his chest as he leaned against the wall close by. He knew something was up. He had been hounding me about it since we got back from Kyleeโs house. So had my mother, but I sure wasnโt going down that road.

Briggs was my Beta. We had been friends since we were eight and had been through everything together since then. I didnโt think there was anything we could hide from each other. But I surely wanted to hide this from him. So I just ignored his presence.

โYou ready to tell me what is going on with you? Or at least, where you were today?โ he said loud enough to be heard over the sound of my fists hitting the bag.

โNo.โ

โIf you donโt, weโll sedate you. Your aura is out of control right now, bro. This isnโt about you just being in a pissy mood anymore,โ Briggs said with an edge to his voice that meant he was serious.
I yelled as I hit the bag hard one more time. I winced as I forced my fingers through my hair. I hadnโt realized I had been breaking the skin on my knuckles. I fell back against the wall, sliding down to the floor.

โYou know Iโm here for you, bro,โ my Beta said calmly. โWhatever it is, you can talk to me.โ
I nodded.

โTell him.โ

I winced at Keiranโs demand. But I couldnโt really disagree anymore.

โI found my mate,โ I admitted. I could feel Briggsโ eyes go wide in his head.

โWhat do you mean you found your mate?โ he took a step closer. โPlease tell me youโre talking about Kylee.โ

I shook my head. โNo. I found my fated mate.โ

โWhat. The. Fu-โ He had warned me about this when I first got involved with Kylee and again when we announced our mating ceremony. โWhere is she? Who is she?โ

โI rejected her. Sheโs gone.โ

โTheo, man, youโre really scaring me now. Why would you do that? What were you thinking?โ Briggs demanded.

โSheโs Kyleeโs sister,โ I snapped. Briggs tensed up.

โAyla? As in the sister that allegedly abandoned Kylee?โ

His use of the word โallegedlyโ pissed me off and confused me a little. He really liked Kylee. Theyโve always gotten along. Even when he was cautioning me about finding my mate, he told me he was happy for me.

โAre you trying to say Kylee is lying?โ I snapped.

He made a face. โNo, but I do think itโs foolish to reject your mate without all the information.โ

โI have all the information I need.โ

โNo, you have Kyleeโs side of the story,โ Briggs said with a worried look.

โAnd their motherโs,โ I added.

Briggs scoffed. โLook, Marie Garner is a nice enough lady, but I wouldnโt exactly trust her judgment.โ

โWhat are you talking about?โ I asked, my own concern growing.

โBro, sheโs a lush,โ Briggs said with a shrug. โNot that youโve been around enough to notice since sheโs been here. I canโt tell how bad, and she seems pretty harmless. But these things often have a dark side that no one sees.โ

I couldnโt believe we were having this conversation. The last thing I needed was any kind of doubt in my decision.

โWhatever. It doesnโt matter. Whatโs done is done. And Aylaโs reactions to all of this told me all I needed to know from her.โ I pushed myself to my feet.

โWhat were her reactions?โ Briggs asked cautiously, and I realized my choice of words may have given away more than I intended. I knew he wouldnโt let it go unless he was sure I told him everything.

โWhich time?โ I said quietly.

โExcuse me?โ He heard exactly what I said. โWhat happened, Theo?โ

โShe never argued or fought the rejection. She agreed and accepted it the first day we met like it was nothing. She had no response, no rebuttal, no explanation,โ I told him. โYou have to be coldhearted to feel nothing after breaking a mate bond.โ

โOr extremely strong,โ Briggs stated. โYou said she didnโt argue or fight. Did you even give her a chance to speak or even get to know anything about her before you threw her to the curb? Or did you just walk up to her and say tough words?โ

I grimaced. Thatโs exactly what happened. โThere wasnโt exactly an opportunity for that. Neither one of us wanted Kylee to find out.โ

The muscles in his neck flexed as he tensed. โYou said โwhich time.โ When did you see her again?โ

โThis morning.โ

โWhy?โ

I could tell he was choosing his words carefully.

โKylee wanted a necklace of her motherโs that was left at their house for some appointment this week. I went back to get it.โ

โOkay, someone else could have done that. Why did you go?โ Briggs pushed, but the words stuck in my throat. โTheo, youโre hurting. Thereโs no way this is as cut and dry as youโre trying to say it is.โ

โThe bond didnโt break. Not completely.โ

โGoddess, Theo. So you both have been walking around with your hearts ripped open for the past week?โ Briggs said. โSo, what happened today? Why are you still on the edge of ripping half the packโs throats out?โ

Images of that morning flashed through my head. The fear that something had happened to her when she hadnโt been home. The jealousy and rage at finding her at another maleโs house. The way it felt when I kissed her. And sheer pain and anguish of everything that followed.

โTheo?โ Briggs pressed.

โShe cut her ties to the pack,โ I said solemnly. โShe turned herself rogue.โ

โTheo,โ Briggs bellowed, โhow could you let that happen? Why didnโt you stop her?โ

โShe cut herself from Dad. She used his name. There was nothing I could do. I had no way of fighting it.โ I was done with this conversation. โSo none of this matters. Itโs done. Sheโs gone. Sheโs never coming back. Doing so would be a death sentence, and she knew that.โ

โWhat have you done, Theo?โ

โIt doesnโt matter,โ I yelled. โWhatever I did or didnโt do, she never wanted me anyway. Sheโs not my problem anymore. So right now, Iโm going to worry about cleaning up the mess she made and figure out how to tell Kylee and Marie that theyโll never see her again. And donโt you dare breathe a word about any of this to them, do you understand me?โ

โOkay. Okay,โ Briggs said, raising his hands in the air, trying to calm me down. โYouโre right. Thereโs nothing we can do about her now. If itโs done and over with, then itโs done and over with. Weโll move on.โ

I wasnโt sure he believed it, but I didnโt care. Like I said, she wasnโt my problem anymore.

I went back to my room. There was a knock on my room door, and Kylee poked her head in before I had a chance to answer.
โThere you are, mate,โ she cooed, sitting in my lap.
She ran a hand up my chest, leaning in to kiss me. Kieranโs growl started immediately.
I still needed to let off some steam. Anything to get some relief.
I was about to respond to her when blinding pain erupted through my body. | LEARN_MORE | https://storyaholic.readlife.mobi/6p33cmijs00.html | 100972718815811 | Holic of novels | https://facebook.com/100071831618482 | 1,865 | 0 | 428,909,599,525,929 | 2024-03-25 02:00 | person_profile | eligible | 0 | 0 | NONE | 0 | 0 | 1 | 1 | Learn more | 0 | Holic of novels | 120207528613160731 | storyaholic.readlife.mobi | NONE | video | https://storyaholic.readlife.mobi/6p33cmijs00.html | 2024-03-25 04:13 | https://scontent-atl3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/431552094_1117463889397666_8458885754714359636_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_s60x60&_nc_cat=109&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=RhpeGtXMgF0AX97Ebz7&_nc_ht=scontent-atl3-1.xx&oh=00_AfAo1aJNFHh5vgWVHvtqyod6ptM1y9phXvrMhTlEEKGu1g&oe=660905B8 | person_profile | 0 | Holic of novels | https://scontent-atl3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/434413173_1791662487979857_4190468084852915186_n.jpg?_nc_cat=103&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=KD2DXLlQSfsAX95unX-&_nc_ht=scontent-atl3-1.xx&oh=00_AfAEva7PEY2CjH7DGFKkVdS9P-BxgGXM4YTyWS6JHlHt4Q&oe=6609C277 | 0 | 3 | Holic of novels | 0 | 0 | 2024-03-25 02:00 | View Edit Delete

Teen Wolf goes to College - Romance Novel | Hot guys ๐ธ
Sizzling bedroom scenes ๐ธ
Fated Mates ๐ธ
_____

Read a sneak peak:

Chapter 1
Quin

I canโt believe Lou talked me into doing this. At one point sheโs saying how Iโll go feral if I donโt get out and meet somebody, and the next thing I know Iโm yelling at her about how thatโs not how going feral works. She then tells me that that is exactly how it works and makes up a story about a dog that went crazy because it was tied up all day.

As insulting as it was to compare me to a dog, I have to admit that sheโs not entirely wrong. Iโve struggled figuring out who I am. Am I my fatherโs daughter as my dad always says? Or, am I the thing that the rest of the world sees me as and that Iโm always trying to suppress?

Either way, my life sucks. I mean, I have everything in life anyone could ask for thanks to my fatherโs wildly successful genetics research company. But, it comes with a trade-off that makes it not worth it.

My father thought he was doing the world a service by curing infertility. And since my mom was infertile, she became the first test subject. Iโm proof that it worked. But it had a side effect that no one could ever have imagined.

My mom is dead because of that side effect. I lock myself away because of that side effect. And, because of it, Iโm scared as hell of the full moon.

Itโs not that I think anything is going to happen to me during a full moon. Thereโs been a lot of full moons since the first time, and I believe in science.

What terrifies me about it is what other people think will happen. If theyโve heard of me โand who hasnโt heard of me thanks to my showboating father โ and they see me out in a full moon, every crazy story theyโve read turns me into a monster in their eyes.

I donโt want to feel their judgement or terror. Whatโs more, I donโt want to smell it. Iโve been told that Iโm the only one who notices it, but peopleโs scents are overwhelming. Thatโs part of the reason I lock myself in my dorm room when Iโm not attending class. Well, that and fact that no one at East Tennessee University has recognized me yet and I want it to stay that way.

The only one so far who knows about my condition is Louise, my roommate and first actual friend. I told her after the University matched us and decided that this was the year I would attend. Thanks to my home schooling and inheriting my fatherโs intellectual gifts, Iโve had a high school equivalency since I was 16 years old. And four years is a long time to figure out what Iโm going to do with my life.

Itโs not like I would ever need to find a job, or that I couldnโt get the equivalent of my intended genetics major just from working with my dad. But, there was one thing I didnโt have and I knew I couldnโt get living how I was. Locked away like in our New York penthouse, I would never have a life. I would never have real friends. I would never have sex.

I wanted sex. During a certain time of the month, it is all I can think about. The full moon might not turn me into a snarling, half-human beast. But, it makes me think sex like I need it to breath. The older I get, the worse it gets.

Is there a chance not leaving my dorm will make me go feral like Lou casually suggested? I donโt think so. Iโve had a lot more control over things compared to when I was a kid. If this was an alcohol problem instead of what it is, I could say that I havenโt had a drink in years.

But, whether Lou was joking or not, I didnโt want her thinking that me going feral was a possibility. So, after some yelling and fighting, I looked up the only party on campus happening tonight, and dressed for it.

โFinally,โ Lou said as I headed to the door.

What killed me was that after all of our arguing, as I left she had a smirk on her face. It was like this was her plan all along and I was the only one who actually got upset. She had manipulated me to go out and get a life. That sneaking little diva!

โAnd I want proof that you didnโt just go to a park and chase squirrels or something.โ

โI donโt chase squirrels!โ I protested strongly.

โWhatever! But, when I get back from my date, I want to see a naked guy in your bed and I want to see some shame, Missy. Plenty of it.โ

โThere will be! There will be plenty of shame, for you. Because of how wrong you were about meโฆ and stuff.โ

โGood.โ

โGood.โ

โI mean it, Quin.โ

โMe too.โ

So now, here I am marching across campus to the only party that my last-minute research turned up. East Tennessee Universityโs football team won against West Tennessee University their cross-state rivals earlier in the day and the football fraternity was throwing a party. Nothing about any of that sounded fun, but Iโm goingโฆ because Lou tricked me into it. So much for me being the smart one.

Fine. Iโll go. Iโll get proof that I was there. Then Iโll go to a coffee shop and read a book on my phone.

I know she mentioned that thing about finding someone naked in my bed, but thereโs no way thatโs going to happen. I couldnโt lose my virginity in a pool full of dicks. Believe me, Iโve tried. But as soon as anyone gets a good look at me and realizes who I am, they either talk about leashing me in case I turn on them in the middle of sex, or they run for the hills.

No, Iโm going to spend the rest of my life as a sad, lonely virgin. Did I just bum myself out? I think I did. Now Iโm really not in the mood for a party.

Rounding the corner, I could hear the music before the fraternity house came into view. My anger at Lou was still driving me, but its effects were fading fast. The other thing about growing up the way I did was that, I wasnโt very good at human stuff. Coming face-to-face with the reality of what I was doing, I was realizing that there was no way I was going to be able to mingle or cohort or whatever it was that people my age did.

Nope! New plan. I wasnโt going in. I was gonna get my proof that I was here, though. I was gonna walk up to one of the half dozen people standing outside, ask to take a selfie with them and then get out of there as quickly as I could.

Looking around, I saw people smoking, people talking in a circle with red cups, and one guy standing by himself. That made the selection easy. All I had to do was walk up to him, ask to take a selfie, snap it, thank him and go. I could manage that. I wasnโt a complete freak. I could talk to one person.

Tightening my lips, I hardened my resolve and charged over. I wasnโt going to overthink it. I was just going to do it and be done.

โExcuse me, can I get a selfie with you?โ I asked the guy with his back to me.

โYou want a selfie with me? Why?โ The guy said with an edge to his voice as he turned around.

Woah!

Do you know that feeling when you see something that takes your breath away? Warm prickles start at the back of your hands and shoot up your arms before settling in your face as the heat makes you lightheaded? That was what happened when our eyes met. The guy was beautiful.

His creamy skin contrasted with his jet black hair and pool-blue eyes. His jawline was carved out of marble. There were dimples, so many dimples. And his rippling muscles looked like they had muscles.

More than that, he smelled amazing. There was a sweet musk to him that I had never smelt in my life. It made me drunk just standing there. As his scent wafted off of him, it stripped me of my will. It was like he had leashed me while at the same time awaking the part of me I fought so hard to restrain.

I couldnโt speak and he was clearly waiting for me to. He had asked me a question. What was it? Oh yeah! It was why I wanted a selfie with him, and he seemed upset about it.

Had I made him angry? Was it weird to ask to take a selfie with a complete stranger? It probably was? Shit! What the hell was I thinking?

โSorry,โ I sputtered before forcing my legs to move in the opposite direction.

I got two steps away before he spoke again.

โWait! Donโt go.โ

I stopped.

โIโm sorry. I didnโt mean to be rude. If you want a selfie, Iโll take one with you.โ

โNo, thatโs okay,โ I said wanting to look at him again but scared that if I did I wouldnโt be able to breathe.

โNo, really. Itโs fine. You can get one. I donโt know why anyone would want one. But, itโs fine. Iโd be happy to take one with you.โ

That was when I looked at him again. I recognized what he was saying. He was talking like a guy who was used to people asking to take pictures with him. I knew a little about that. Who didnโt want to take their picture with Harlequin Toro, the only wolf shifter in existence?

That was me, though. Why did people ask him for selfies? He was the most amazing-looking guy ever. Did random strangers approach him dazzled by his beauty? It wouldnโt surprise me if they did.

โI, um, wasnโt asking for a selfie because I know who you are. I donโt recognize you. I donโt know who you are,โ I explained.

The guy jutted his head back startled. As I stared, his fair skin turned pink.

โOh! Okay. Thenโฆโ he shook his head as if trying to shake something loose. โIโm sorry, why do you want a selfie with me?โ

โIt wasnโt you. It was anybody,โ I told him.

โYou wanted to get a selfie with anybody? Why?โ

I huffed as my infuriating predicament reentered my mind.

โItโs my roommate. She told me that I needed to get out and have fun. She said she needed proofโฆโ

โAnd the selfie was going to be the proof?โ

โYeah.โ

โSo, after you took the selfieโฆ, what? You were gonna go?โ

โYeah,โ I admitted suddenly deflating.

The gorgeous guy looked at me like I was the freak that I am. A smile crept across his face. It would have made me feel bad about myself if it didnโt make me want to melt into a puddle in the grass.

โThis is going to sound crazy, but youโre here. Why not go in and actually have fun?โ

โIโm not good at this type of thing. You know, the social thing.โ

โLuckily, thatโs something Iโm very good at. How about we make a deal? Iโll give you your selfie as proof for your roommate, but you have to come in and actually try to have a good time. Iโll introduce you to a couple of people. That way, when your roommate asks you about the night, you wonโt have to lie,โ he said his face exploding into dimples.

I stared at him. โWhy would you do that?โ

He looked at me twisting his head in confusion.

โMaybe Iโm just being nice. Maybe I think youโre cool and that it would be cool to hang out. Maybe Iโm flirting.โ

A chill shot through me upon hearing the word โflirtingโ. What was going on? Did this guy like me? Was there something happening between us? Was there going to be a naked guy in my bed full of shame when Lou got home after all?

โUm, okay,โ I said sure that I was turning beet-red.

โCage, by the way?โ

โWhat?โ

โMy name.โ He stared at me. โAnd your name is?โ

โOh. Quin.โ

โCool. I like that name.โ

โThanks. My parents gave it to me,โ I said losing control of my tongue.

Cage laughed.

โI mean, of course my parents gave it to me.โ

โNot of course. My parents didnโt give me the name Cage.โ

โWho did? An uncle or somebody?โ

โNo, I did.โ

โSo, whatโs your birth name?โ

Cage looked at me with thoughts rushing through his head. โHow about I take you inside and show you around?โ

โSo, I guess weโre going to let that question go?โ

Cage chuckled uncomfortably.

As he led me up the stairs, onto the porch, and then into the frat house, it was hard to take my eyes off of him. When I did, I was surprised by what I saw. I didnโt know what I was expecting, but it wasnโt this. The large living room was sparsely furnished but full of people. Everyone had red cups in their hand and they spoke to each other like they were friends.

โItโs still pretty early,โ Cage explained.

โWhat do you mean?โ I said raising my voice over the country-pop music.

โThereโll be more people later.โ

โMore than this?โ I asked looking around at what felt like a horde.

Cage chuckled. โYeah.โ

โCage!โ A thick guy said throwing his arms around Cage spilling some of his drink onto Cageโs shirt. โOh, did I get you?โ

โThatโs okay,โ Cage said casually. โDan, this is Quin.โ

Dan turned to me and stared. โQuin!โ he finally said ending the awkwardness. โIs he trying to recruit you?โ

โWhat?โ I asked confused.

โIs he trying to get you on the football team?โ

I stared at him unsure what was happening. Was he being serious? Did he think I was a boy? Itโs not like that mistake hadnโt happened before. On top of everything else, the boob fairy hadnโt exactly been generous to me.

But, even if he did think I was a boy, I would be a small one. Iโm clearly not built like someone who ran full speed into 200-pound men.

โFootball team?โ

I turned to Cage confused.

Cage smiled. โDonโt pay any attention to Dan. Heโs taken a few too many hits.โ

โYouโre welcome, by the way,โ Dan said defensively.

โYou two are on the football team?โ I asked putting things together.

Dan dropped his clueless jock act and threw his arms around Cage. โNo. Iโm on the football team. This man is the team.โ

I looked at Cage for an explanation.

He smiled with humility. โIโm the quarterback.โ

โHe isnโt just the quarterback,โ Dan said mockingly. โHeโs the guy whoโs gonna lead us to a national championship, and then heโs going pro.โ

โOhhhh! Now I get it. The selfie. You thought I was asking for a selfie because youโre a famous football player.โ

โIโm not a famous football player,โ he said quickly.

โHell yeah, heโs famous. There ainโt anybody who doesnโt know who he is,โ Dan said proudly.

I looked at Cage for his reaction. Cage looked back at me and chuckled uncomfortably.

โNot everyone knows who I am.โ

โName me one person who doesnโt,โ Dan challenged.

He gave me a knowing smile. โQuin, you want a drink? I think you need a drink. Follow me.โ

โGood meeting you, Quin,โ Dan said before wandering off.

โSo, youโre a quarterback?โ

โDidnโt you hear? Iโm not just a quarterback, Iโm the team,โ Cage said with self-deprecation.

I laughed. โI heard. Are you going to go pro?โ

โSure,โ Cage said half-heartedly before turning to pump beer into two red cups.

โYou donโt sound excited.โ

โNo. Iโm excited. I canโt wait to play for the NFL. Itโs, ah, everything Iโve been working towards,โ he said handing me a cup and holding up his to cheers with mine. โTo new friends.โ

I touched his cup and took a drink. โThis beer is awful,โ I said looking down at my cup.

Cage laughed. โNo, tell me what you really think.โ

โI mean that itโs not very good,โ I explained.

Cage laughed louder. โYou donโt have much of a filter, do you?โ

I froze. That wasnโt the first time someone had said that to me. โIs that bad?โ

โActually, itโs kind of refreshing.โ

โOh. Okay,โ I said falling for him more.

โYou have a nice smile.โ

โI didnโt realize I was smiling,โ I told him.

โYou are,โ he said looking at me with a smile of his own.

โYou too. Itโs very nice,โ I said feeling my heart thump and not knowing what to do about it.

Cage stopped smiling and looked into my eyes. God did I want to kiss him.

โI suppose if I ask you if youโre having fun yet, youโll tell me the truth.โ

โIโm having fun,โ I said moving closer in case he did want to kiss me.

Cage watched me with a devilish look in his eyes. I could have sworn that he was about to move his lips towards mine when he said, โWhy donโt I introduce you to a few more people.โ

โMore people? Iโve already met two. How many more people can a person meet in a night?โ

โHaha. A few more than that,โ he said slipping his hand around my shoulders and leading me away.

Feeling his touch set something off in me that I could barely control. It was the part of me that I fought to repress. It was fighting to get out. I knew I should have been doing everything to resist it, but I didnโt want to. With it came a sense of power I had never felt before. I liked it. It made me feelโฆ strong.

In spite of how much I wanted to let go, I did my best to stay with Cage in my present form. He was leading me around the party introducing me to people. He wasnโt kidding about being good at social stuff. Everyone he introduced me to hung on his every word. And, when it was my turn to speak, they hung on my every word, too.

These types of interactions had always been so hard for me. But, balancing on the surface of my spiraling emotions, this time I feltโฆ alive.

What charged me up even more was that Cage took every opportunity to touch me. He touched my shoulder when he introduced me. His pointing finger lightly rested on my forearm when he was emphasizing a point. And, standing shoulder to shoulder as if we were already a couple, he would bump his shoulder against mine when he laughed.

I was on the verge of shifting by the time he was done with me. I knew that should have freaked me out. But instead I thought about what Lou had suggested. What would Cage look like naked in my bed?

With one of his teammates waving his arms around telling a story, I couldnโt take my eyes off of Cage. With his full attention on his friend, Cage subtly retrieved his phone from his pocket and peaked down. Slipping it away quickly, he waited for the arm waving to die down and then looked between his friend and me.

โI hate to say this, but I have to head out,โ he said lightly placing his large hand on the back of my arm.

โYes, me too,โ I said quickly.

โYeah? Where you headed?โ He asked enthusiastically.

โBack to my room.โ

โWhereโs that?โ

โPlaza Hall?โ

โReally? Iโll go with you,โ he said squeezing my arm.

My heart stopped. He was coming with me? Was this it? I couldnโt believe it might finally happen. I swallowed and forced myself to speak.

โCool.โ

After saying a few goodbyes, the two of us exited into the night. As the cool air surrounded my hot body, I felt giddy and dangerous. I needed to hear his voice. I knew it would anchor me.

Why wasnโt he saying anything? Hadnโt he claimed to be good at stuff like this? I was about to mumble something in desperation when he finally said,

โItโs a clear night.โ

โWhat?โ

โYou can see all of the stars.โ

I looked up. He was right. The night was perfectly clear. There was nothing between us and the light of the full moon. How had I not remembered that tonight was the full moon?

Itโs not like it mattered. I wasnโt a hollowing monster enslaved by it. I hadnโt shifted in years. I had long ago gotten control over myself, over my body. I was Harlequin Toro, human, not some mindless wolfโฆ

โYou cold?โ

โWhat?โ

โYouโre shivering.โ

I was shaking. โI guess Iโm nervous,โ I admitted.

โWhat are you nervous about?โ

My face got hot. โI donโt know.โ

Cage stared at me. โYouโre really pretty. Do you know that?โ

โSo are you. I mean, youโre good-looking not pretty,โ I told him shaking even more.

Cage chuckled. โThanks. Are you happy you came out tonight?โ

โYeah, definitely,โ I said fighting not to show him how much.

โWeโre here,โ he said as we approached the door of my building.

โWeโre here,โ I repeated my heart pounding. โDo you want to come in?โ

โCome in?โ Cage asked caught off guard.

โYes,โ I replied struggling not to pounce him right there.

โAhhhh,โ he murmured before the door popped open and a girl came out.

โCage!โ She said before wrapping her arms around him and standing on her tiptoes to kiss his lips.

My mouth dropped open in shock. What was going on? What had just happened?

The petite, blonde with angular features turned towards me. โWhoโs this?โ

โAh, this is Quin. Quin this is Tasha.โ

Tasha looked at me suspiciously while Cage became uncomfortable.

โTasha is my girlfriend.โ

โHow do you know Cage?โ Tasha asked me.

I was too shocked by everything to speak.

โQuin had asked me for a selfie.โ

Tasha turned to Cage surprised. โOh. Did you give her one?โ

โNot yet,โ Cage said with a smile.

โI can take it,โ Tasha volunteered. โGive me your phone,โ she said approaching me with her hand out.

Still speechless, I handed her my phone and stood next to Cage.

โSay cheese,โ she said.

โCheese,โ Cage replied while I stared back stunned.

โHere you go,โ she said handing me back my phone. โCheck it.โ

I looked down and saw my full humiliation on display. โYes.โ

โOkay. Letโs go. Iโm hungry,โ Tasha said entwining her body with Cageโs and pulling him away.

โIt was nice meeting you, Quin,โ he said looking at me as he left.

โNice meetingโฆ you,โ I mumbled sure that he could no longer hear me.

I watched as the perfectly suited couple walked off. Of course, he had a girlfriend. And, of course, she looked like that. My heart hurt watching them go.

I canโt believe I thought he wanted to be with me. No one ever wanted to be with me. How could I have been so foolish? How could I think a guy like him would be interested in a girl like me?

Once the two had disappeared into the darkness, I entered the building. Ascending the stairs in a daze, I felt like I was going to explode. Why didnโt anyone ever like me back? Why didnโt Cage like me?

I couldnโt take this anymore. My skin vibrated with a ferocity I hadnโt felt in years. When I finally realized what was going on, it was too late.

โOh no. No, no, no, no, no,โ I said in a panic.

As I bound up the stairs, the world around me drifted further away. I needed to lock myself up. I couldnโt believe this. It had been years. Why now? Why here?

Approaching my dorm room door, I smelled the last thing I wanted to smell or expected. Lou was home. Why was she home? Didnโt she say she had a date?

I didnโt want her to see me like this. I didnโt want to terrify her with the truth of who I was. I didnโt want to accidently kill her.

Was this how my mother died? Had I lost control and ripped out her throat? I was too young to remember. But a three-year-old child and a three-year-old wolf are different. If I let it, would the beast inside of me take away another person I cared about?

No, I couldnโt let it. I had to get behind closed doors as quickly as I could. Scrambling for my keys I flung open the door and charged in.

โArenโt you supposed to be out finding yourself a guy?โ She said as I rushed by her for my room. โQuin, whatโs wrong?โ

As my bedroom door closed behind me and I searched for the padlock for the latch I installed, I finally lost control and did what I prayed for years that I wouldnโt do. The feeling was torture. It all came rushing back.

A prickly feeling washed over me igniting every nerve in my body. My muscle clamped into the worst cramp you could imagine. And as my muscles pulled apart and ate itself, my bones snapped under the strain of it.

Mercifully, that was when I passed out. This was how it happened when I was a kid. At least it started that way. Because as a kid, I would black out in one location and wake up naked and covered in blood somewhere else.

My father often tested the blood to make sure none of it was human. It never was. But, every so often pictures of missing cats would end up posted around our upstate New York home.

Our neighbors knew what I was so they had their suspicions but they would never know for sure. The only person to ever see me shift was my father. And it wasnโt until he determined that I, and my wolf, wasnโt a threat that we moved back to the Manhattan apartment where my mother had died.

This shift wasnโt like any I had had when I was a kid, though. This time I woke up in my room in the dark. It felt like one of those instances when you wake up to learn that you canโt move your body. I was conscious, fully conscious. But I was pacing in my room very close to the ground and it felt like I was being taken for a ride.

As much as I tried, I couldnโt stop myself. My dresser whipped by me in rapid succession and as I entertained the sounds around me, I heard a wild panting. Oh no, I was in it. I was the monster.

The only way I had been able to come to terms with who I was was by convincing myself that I wasnโt it and it wasnโt me. I wasnโt the one who killed my mother. It was. It was dangerous and brutal. I was not.

Yet, here I was disproving everything I held onto for my own sanity. I was awake, though not in control, and I was experiencing the world around me as if it were my own.

โQuin, are you alright?โ a faint voice said just outside my door.

As if set on fire, my wolf went wild. It bulleted to the door and attacked it as if fighting to break through.

โOh no, the latch. I didnโt lock it,โ I remembered flooded with dread.

As soon as I said it, my eyes turned towards the door handle and it clawed at it. It heard me and it was fighting to get out. If it got out it would kill Lou. I was sure of it. It would kill everyone in its path until someone put it down or it ran away.

This was my greatest nightmare come true. It was why I locked myself away never wanting to come out. It was everything I had feared.

Wait! It heard me! Thatโs how it knew to go after the lock. If it heard me say that, thenโฆ

โStop it! You will not attack my friend. You wonโt do to her what you did to my mother!โ

As if frozen in place, it stopped. Standing still, sadness washed through my mind. It wasnโt me feeling it. It was the wolf. It was thinking about what it had done to my mom. Regret filled it. Somehow I knew it hadnโt meant to. And as if calmed by the tragedy, it slowly back away from the door and whimpered.

My wolf was crying. It knew how much it had lost that day as much as I did. It also knew that it was her fault. Both of us had grown up without a mother because of it. Death hadnโt been my wolfโs intention. It had acted impulsively and unexpected things had happened.

Without asking it to, the wolf walked in front of my full length mirror. It was dark, but the wolfโs eyes were more sensitive than mine. I could make out her reflection clearly. I was 20 and just approaching adulthood. The wolf staring back at me was much older than that.

I had only seen video of it before. Back then it was of a much younger wolf. This one looked calmer and maybe even a little wiser than the one pacing back and forth in my fatherโs safety room. Was it different than the one that had terrorized my world all of those years ago?

Maybe it was. Maybe I didnโt know this wolf at all. Maybe I didnโt know myself. Who would I be if I wasnโt so scared of what I would become?

*****

Get it now to keep reading!
_______

AUDIOBOOK LISTENERS - Get this audiobook for free by signing up for a free trial of Audible by clicking here: https://adbl.co/3i37z85 | LEARN_MORE | https://www.amazon.com/dp/B099X8BP5J?maas=maas_adg | 337827106228528 | Alex Anders Author Page | https://facebook.com/AlexAndersBooks | 923 | 0 | 1,464,232,721,163,908 | 2024-03-26 02:00 | regular_page | eligible | 0 | 0 | NONE | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | Learn more | 0 | Alex Anders Author Page | 6588946098953 | amazon.com | NONE | image | Her Caged Wolf: Fated Mates Wolf Shifter Romance - Anthology (Wolf Falls Book 1) | https://www.amazon.com/dp/B099X8BP5J?maas=maas_adg_4AABD90F973DC289C878EDA4835C7908_afap_abs&ref_=aa_maas&tag=maas | 2024-03-26 10:53 | https://scontent-sjc3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/434315455_2041932286185340_4719984855678196386_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_s60x60&_nc_cat=107&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=lTDQHiF8P8AAX9ey-IL&_nc_ht=scontent-sjc3-1.xx&oh=00_AfDNzJsRHlik23B5SwEoo00jrVoEOnDgy37c6E5xTN_d2A&oe=6609D447 | person_profile | 0 | Alex Anders Author Page | https://scontent-sjc3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.35426-6/433142266_731609059059277_477795833077092433_n.jpg?_nc_cat=104&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=c53f8f&_nc_ohc=bnMvpE-FRTwAX_IPq8r&_nc_ht=scontent-sjc3-1.xx&oh=00_AfBYjkWMORi3NeYTOKKS1T_RLnAUWjQWdxif2Rba_GF8gA&oe=6608E1BF | 0 | 3 | Alex Anders Author Page | 0 | 0 | 2024-03-26 02:00 | View Edit Delete
