The thing is, we&#039;ve been misled to think:<br /> 👉 That a horse must accept us as the alpha horse ... the very nature of any training done under this mindset is based on dominance theory. The idea behind this is that the horse must do what he is asked and submit to our leadership, otherwise he is challenging our position.<br /> <br /> (If you are like me, it just doesn’t feel right in your gut to always demand obedience, no matter what. That just doesn&#039;t align with our emphatic heart to be so bossy towards our horses. <br /> <br /> We would rather work through connection.)<br /> <br /> 👉 That our horses are doing things to test us, spooking to get out of work, trying to win and be the alpha, is doing things on purpose…<br /> <br /> 👉 That if our horses are not well-behaved ... that it&#039;s our fault for not being a good enough &#039;trainer&#039;. <br /> <br /> That you are being too soft with your horse and you should toughen up. <br /> <br /> That you can’t have both: a great relationship AND a well trained horse...<br /> <br /> The truth is:<br /> <br /> THESE THREE COMMON BELIEFS ARE FALSE.<br /> <br /> In fact, those beliefs are often the cause of friction between horse and human and that both don’t feel well in the relationship.<br /> <br /> Because the horse doesn’t feel understood and it feels wrong in our gut to always have to be so bossy with our horse.<br /> <br /> We CAN create a relationship based on connection with our horses. Without “being boss”, force or intimidation. <br /> <br /> You are NOT a “bad horse owner” if your horse spooks, doesn’t stand, pulls the feet away, is pushy or drags you around. <br /> <br /> This is plain normal horse behavior.<br /> <br /> “Toughen up! Show him who is boss! Don’t let him get away with this!”<br /> <br /> You are so right if these sentences make you feel sick to the stomach.<br /> <br /> I got to hear them as well. <br /> <br /> Hundreds of times.<br /> <br /> But every time I pulled myself together and tried to follow this advice, I felt so bad and guilty towards my horse afterwards. <br /> <br /> Because this wasn’t what I wanted. <br /> <br /> I wanted a friendship. Connection. Trust.
