"I can't believe Alpha Griffin got a weakling like her."
Griff and I tried our best to ignore them and have a good time, but I could feel his anger growing steadily. His body was stiff and his eyebrows were furrowed.
"Guess what?" I asked, looking at him. I didn't know him that much, but he was one of the nicest people I've met. I hated to see him so upset. It made me feel oddly sad. I rubbed circles onto his hand with my thumb. "What?" He responded.
"I like you. You are a good human." I grinned a little. He chuckled and shook his head. "Thanks. I like you too."
******
Sophia's P.O.V
------------------
"Whoosh!" I giggled as I held my stuffie in my hand and waved it through the air, pretending it could fly.
Sadly, I was interrupted just then. "No. Mr. Sheepie was just about to get his super hero cape." I mumbled before turning my attention to the person who had entered my room.
"You have mail." My older brother threw the letter at me. I tilted my head to the side. I never got mail. "Thank you." I managed. My family scared me. They hated me.
"Yeah, whatever." My brother, Daniel, turned and slammed my door on the way out. None of them liked me and they all shunned me for the most part. At least they let me be me and have all my little things.
I picked up the letter from where it had fallen. I nearly dropped it when I read where it was from.
The mating ball committee. AKA the evil villain in my fairy tale (along with most people). My hands shook as I ripped open the letter and read it. Sure enough, it was an invitation to the annual mating ball. Except I didn't have a choice. I was required to go.
I always knew that I would have to face it, but I wasn't ready. I began to cry and scream, flailing my arms about and throwing a tantrum.
My brother burst back in the room.
"Sophia, would you get your whiny hip up and be quiet? Mom and Dad are gone and I have to put up with your annoying self. Why are you even throwing a tantrum?!" Daniel frustratingly asked.
I sniffled and pointed at the letter in fear. "M-mating ball."
"N-no... I forgot about that." His face went white.
I tilted my head to the side again. "What wrong?" He left without another word.
............................
"WE'LL BE THE LAUGHING STOCK OF ALL THE PACKS! NOBODY IS GOING TO WANT HER, ANYWAY! WHO WANTS THAT WEIRD BIMBO?!" My brother vented to my parents, explaining his anxiety and frustration. I listening from my hiding spot in the hall and tried not to cry.
"I know, I know. But she has to go. If she doesn't, it'll raise suspicion." My father replied. He was our pack's alpha and, to him, image was everything.
"I hope she gets a mate. Then she will be someone else's problem." My mother chimed in. I scrambled to my bedroom before I could hear anymore and began to cry.
I held my stuffie tight to me and spent the rest of the night crying in my soft bed before finally falling asleep.
Sophia's P.O.V
----------------------
I brushed my teeth, did my skincare routine, and slipped on the dress. Today was the day. The mating ball. It had come too soon.
I looked in the mirror at my reflection and frowned. Something was missing. Just then, I figured it out. "Sockies!" I giggled, skipping to my drawers to get my white ruffle socks. I slid into my pink shoes with tiny bows and smiled, satisfied. "Yay!" I clapped my hands excitedly. I may not enjoy the event, but at least I will look cute.
I skipped to the bathroom and applied lipgloss and clipped a tiny silk bow into my hair. It was time to go. I exhaled. "You got this." I whispered to my reflection. I couldn't let my anxiety overwhelm me.
I grabbed my small bear backpack and shoved my paci in it, as well as a stuffie. I slid it onto my back and ran to the living room. My mother was standing there, arms crossed and lips pursed. "There you are. It's about time. Let's go."
I was surprised that she had even offered to drive me at all, but I guess she was hoping that I would get a mate and leave for good.
I followed her into a slick cadillac and we began to drive off. I watched our house from the car window until it was nothing but a dot.
...................
I woke up to my mother shaking me. "You lazy bimbo, get up!" She hissed at me, being careful to not let anyone else hear. We couldn't have someone hearing and spreading the story around. News like that would ruin our pack's reputation.
I whimpered and yawned, slowly climbing out of the car. "I'm up. I sorry." I lowered my head and shut the door, waiting for her to lead the way. She didn't.
"Go straight, turn left, and you'll see a big building. That's the place. Bye." She explained before getting in the car and driving off. I stared at the car speeding away, a look of misery on my face. I sighed and took my stuffie out of my bag. It was a sheep.
"Hey, Mr. Sheepie. At least I have you." I snuggled him and began my journey. Luckily, the pathway was cement and not gravel, so I didn't have to worry about getting rocks in my shoes. I hummed to myself softly as I walked to the grand hotel, stuffie clutched to my chest.
Everyone had spent the night at the hotel, since it was all rented out for everyone. But my parents wouldn't let me go, because they said that that would just give me more time to embarass myself. Tsk, whatever. Do they have a spectacular sheep stuffie? No. Therefor they were incompetent. I giggled at the thought, shaking my head at my silliness.
................................
"Name?" The receptionist droned, her eyes glued to her computer.
"Sophia Alvarez." I piped up with a smile. The lady stopped clicking her keyboard and looked up. Only, the moment she did, she was taken aback.
"Uh.. Okay. R-rank?" She stammered. I belonged to a powerful pack, but I was about as strong as my stuffie. She could obviously tell- her expression said it all.
"Beta." I replied. Ranks meant nothing to me. People were people. I didn't get it.
She nodded slowly and went back to typing. "You're all ready to go, Sophia."
"Thanks!" I slightly jumped, happy to be one step closer to the end of this stupid thing. "Oh, what time does the ball start?" I quickly asked. I didn't want to be late.
The lady looked at the schedule and her eyes went wide. "2 minutes. You'd better hurry. Just follow the signs and you'll get there without a problem."
I smiled gratefully and started on my way. Here goes nothing.
Sophia's P.O.V
--------------------
I hesitated before opening the doors to the ballroom. I paused, anxious, but then shook the thoughts from my head. "Screw it." I muttered. I opened the elegant white doors and, after taking one look, shut it again. "Yuckie. Too many people." I grimaced and gripped Mr. Sheepie tighter in my arms and opened the door again, this time actually going in.
Everyone was so stunning and all of the girls wore elegant dresses, making me feel nervous in my flowery pink dress. Most of the guys had already found their mates, but some of them were still roaming around, searching.
Almost instantly, I heard people begin to talk about me.
"Ugh, who let her in here?"
"Is that someone's kid?"
"Oh my gosh. She is holding a stuffed animal."
I heard a few people stifling their laughter as they caught sight of me, but I ignored them, just trying to get through the awful event.
Suddenly a whiff of caramel washed over me. Yum. "That must mean there is a dessert bar, right?" I excitedly exclaimed to myself. I speed walked towards the scent, but, instead of a dessert bar, I found a man.
"Do you know where the dessert bar is?" I piped up, looking around.
"Sorry to disappoint you, but there isn't a dessert bar. There is an actual spirits bar, though." He grinned, looking down at me. He was pretty tall but looked young.
"There must be a dessert bar. I smell caramel. Dessert bar!" I pouted.
"There really isn't a dessert bar, I promise you. I am pretty sure that I am your mate, though. Because I smell sweet to you and only my mate would be able to smell that. You smell like roasted marshmallows to me." The male laughed- it was a deep laugh that made his face light up. It was super cute and made me smile widely.
"What?" He stopped laughing.
"Nothing. Your laugh is just cute. That's all." I admitted, blushing slightly.
"Understandable. I think you are absolutely adorable, if I must say so. I'm lucky to have such an adorable mate," He smiled and held his hand out. "I'm Alpha Griffin, but you can call me Griff." He winked.
I couldn't take his hand- I was too shocked. "Wait, you're serious? I'm your mate and there isn't a dessert bar? And you're an alpha?!" I squeaked. I could tell Griff was trying to hold back laughter.
"Yes. You're too cute. What's your name?" Griff was dressed in a white button down shirt and a satin black suit. Snazzy.
"Sophia."
"Well, Sophia, would you care to dance?" He held his hand out once again. I felt shivers run down my spine as he said my name and I shyly nodded. "Lemme put Mr. Sheepie up first."
"Mr. Sheepie is almost as cute as you. He seems very fluffy." He said in a serious tone, looking at my stuffie. I giggled and put him in my bag, zipping it up. "Mr. Sheepie says thank you."
"He is very welcome. Now, shall we?" He pretended to bow and I took his hand with a smile. "Yes!"
As we glided along the dance floor, people's shocked and disgusted whispers followed us.
"He is with her?"
"He must be toying with her."
Sophia's P.O.V
--------------------------
We had been dancing for about 30 minutes and I was already feeling exhausted. "You wanna leave?" I whispered to Griffin.
"I was just about to ask you that question. Come on." He smiled cheekily and turned, still holding my hand, leading us out of the ballroom. I giggled and skipped behind him, eager to leave the crowded place.
As we were weaving our way through the crowd, a stunning girl with fiery red hair stopped us. She fluttered her eyelashes at Griffin and spoke with an innocent tone. "Excuse me Alpha Griffin, but I just wanted to ask you, are you and this... girl mates?"
Before he could answer, I tightened my hold on his hand and held it up for her to see. "Yup! And guess what? You're not his mate! So shoo!" I giggled and pushed past her with Griffin in tow.
"You're so cute." I heard him tell me from behind.
I smiled shyly, not saying anything more.
We were outside of the grand building. Griffin looked down at his feet and fidgeted with his hands nervously. "Do you want to come with me to my pack? Permanently, I mean. It's no rush, but we have to do it eventually."
"Honestly, I'd prefer that. My pack is full of meanies," I pouted. "but can we stop by my pack first? I need my stuff."
"I'm sorry, love. But yeah, we can drop by. I won't hurt you, I promise." He smiled, and I couldn't help thinking that this was way too good to be reality. This was so much more different than what I was used to.
"Thank you." I hoped he would keep his promise.
"Anytime." He squeezed my hand and my heart filled with glee. I could feel my wolf, Thalia, jump around excitedly and I smiled. Maybe this time things would be different.
Griff took out his phone and dialed a number. Several minutes later, a shiny black Jeep drove up in front of us. "I like to keep things practical. Now come on, princess. We're going on an adventure." He picked me up bridal style and carried my giggling self over to the sturdy car.
"Yay!" I exclaimed, ready for the changes ahead of me.
SOPHIA'S P.O.V
-----------------------------
"Bumpity Bumpity Bump!" I narrated our drive as we drove over the gravel road. Griffin chuckled from the seat next to me and pulled me closer to him- well, as long as the seat belt let him, at least. "You are absolutely adorable."
I shot him a goofy face, which consisted of me scrunching up my face and raising one of my eyebrows. He smiled once more before sticking his tongue out at me and crossing his eyes, making me laugh.
......................
I looked out of the window in dread. Another place I don't like. My pack house. It seemed I was always trapped somewhere I didn't want to be- the mating ball filled with judgmental people and my pack which was filled with even MORE judgmental people. "Yuckie!" I exclaimed, making a disgusted look at my pack house.
"Come on angel. I'm here. I won't leave you." Griffin quickly opened his car door and rushed to my side to open mine for me. He knelt down to my level and took my tiny hands in his large ones. "You can leave your stuff in the car. We're going home after this. An actual home, not just a house." He smiled sadly.
I knew exactly what he meant. 'Home' meant some place/person/thing that makes you feel safe. That makes you feel alive. That wakes your soul up and charges it with joy.
A house was just a place for shelter.
"I think I have found a home, already. I hope." I pointed to him and smiled softly, silently wishing that my words would come true.
"I would love to be your home. You shall be mine as well, and I shall cherish you throughout. But, we can take our time. There is no rush. Now, let us go face the dragon, almighty princess!" Griffin said in a deep voice and picked me up bridal style.
"Off we go, fair knight!" I giggled and kicked my legs.
