Body | I recently saw the question asked; What's a movie that you love, which flopped at the box office?

I wanted to expand on it a little and draw more of a line between those films which actually lost money, and the ones that just turned in disappointing box office totals. Some of this is tricky because its often hard to know the true budget of a film after production costs, marketing and distribution. I went with the numbers most publicly available.

The grosses listed are based on FIRST theatrical runs - several movies added quite a bit to their numbers with later re-releases...

TOTAL FLOPS THAT I LOVED
(Movie - Budget/Gross)
- Dredd (2012) - $45M / $41M
- MacGruber (2010) - $10M / $9.3M
- Hot Rod (2007) - $25M / $14M
- Shawshank Redem. (1994) - $25M / $16M
- Citizen Kane (1941) - $840k / $240k Opening (Hurst controlled a large percentage of theaters in the country and killed the movie)

Other movies that didn't flop, but weren't considered successes upon their initial release...
- Wizard of Oz (1939) - $2.8M / $3M
- Blade Runner (1982) - $30M / $41M
- The Thing (1982) - $15M / $19M
- Labyrinth (1986) - $25M / $34M
- It's a Wonderful Life (1946) - $3.18M / $3.3M
- Office Space (1999) - $10M / $12M
- The Princess Bride (1987) - $16M / $30M
- Doctor Sleep (2019) - $55M / $72M

Something that we underestimate now is the effect that video rental stores had on Hollywood and movie theaters in general. Films in the '80s and '90s sometimes received a whole second run once they hit the rental shelves, which on average was 7-12 months before they were available to buy. That's over 5000 stores acorss the US alone, some of them buying as many as 100 copies of a movie, at $90 a pop. That's a lot of added revenue for the studio. And it's something that digital rentals don't touch now.

Lots of movies actually made more money on Home Video than they did at the box office, and that's where films like Office Space, Princess Bride, Mallrats, and Labyrinth really found audiences.

After DVD took over, and there was no longer a waiting period between rental and purchase, the stores started to die out, with Netflix Streaming being the final nail in the coffin. But this streaming system has proven less profitable and is likely part of the reason studios are less willing to commit to smaller films, with no guarantee of a reliable backend profit. |
