Lessons from afar.

With athletes deep in the woods at the Barkley Marathons this week I thought I would go over what I think it takes to be successful at such a massive undertaking and how this can help when it comes to race planning and training. Let me know what you think in the comments below - 👍 Like - Share - Comment 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🏔️

- RACE SPECIFICITY, SPEED and PREVIOUS FORM - Jared Campbell has finished the Barkley 3 times he’s also won Hardrock. John Kelly has a not to shabby marathon time sub 2.30. Karel Sabbe has won Backyards, has the FKT on the PCT. Have a look at people that have been successful at races and more than likely you will find a massive race resume that has built them up to that moment. So for your race planning and build up what can you add to your resume that will be specific to your race goals? Example - Goal Race 100 Miles - Aim to build up training miles on similar terrain to race day, can you run 100 miles in a week? In 2 weeks? Somehow simulate the distance, speed and conditions that you will run in. Ultimately for your race resume think long term months/years etc Big goals/results like Barkley, 100 mile races, podium finishes are usually the result of years of effort. Be patient:)

- BELIEF AND HOPE. If you have a strong belief and hope that you can finish then your more likely to focus on taking positive steps forward rather than dwelling on the past or pushing to far into the future. As the hours tick by your belief can take a beating, things get harder you get slower, hope dwindles. For your race - Focus on what you can control - eating, moving, hydrating, problem solving etc. Focus on what you can do and keep pushing until you win or time out.

- HAVING SOME HELP. Making good decisions and using some speed early to position yourself with others who can help you at least for a couple of laps will help to set the stage for a possible finish. Following this successfully navigating the challenges once your alone or decide to go solo is the final piece to be successful. Practice this in training. Run with others and get some experience working together. This can be especially useful in Backyard Ultras, The Barkley and similar races like the Revenant.

That’s all for now! Looking forward to following the rest of the Barkley this week. Hopefully we see a finisher or finishers. If you liked these training points and are looking for a easy to follow plan to take the guesswork out of your race build up DM me to get started 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️ I’ve also written a race report on New Zealand’s own Barkley styled race the Revenant adventure run. In its 6 year history only 6 people have finished and it’s had 3 years of zero finishers😱 you can read all about it here https://www.aerobicedge.com/blogs
Happy training! #staysavage
