Title

Celebrating Women in Science

Link Description

In honor of Womenโ€™s History Month, we invite you to our 3rd annual Celebration of Women in Science! Join us to meet KU (and other) scientists, learn about scientific techniques, view specimens and try fun, hands-on experiments! Learn about women scientists from around the world and explore a variety of careers in science! This is a free, all-ages event.

Here's our lineup of awesome exploration stations:

๐Ÿ”น Explore the Super Survey Stream Extravaganza (S3E) station, where you can experiment with an interactive stream table and an augmented reality sandbox to learn how water moves through different landscapes, affects water quality, and more - with Kansas Geological Survey researcher Dr. Blair Schneider, Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Dr. Amy Burgin, and the education team from Friends of the Kaw.

๐Ÿ”น Meet KUNHM Paleobotany Curator Dr. Kelly Matsunaga, explore current research and see incredible fossilized plant specimens, and learn how to make a coal ball peel!

๐Ÿ”น Learn about atmospheric research on dust and climate and try experiments with Dr. Bing Pu from KU Geography and Atmospheric Science!

๐Ÿ”น Check out the fascinating world of plant-microbe interactions with KU Ecology and Evolutionary Biology PhD candidate Ceyda Kural and Laboratory Technician Natalie Ford! Explore the differing ways that plants use their root structures in wetter vs drier climates, and try growing your own microbes in a petri dish.

๐Ÿ”น Dr. Judy Wu & Dr. Barbara Anthony-Twarog from KU Physics & Astronomy will share their incredible hands-on experiments (featuring oobleck and more) -- plus, you can learn all about famous women in physics and astronomy!

๐Ÿ”น Dive into the fascinating world of parasitology with KUNHM Invertebrate Zoology Curator Dr. Kirsten Jensen and her graduate student, Katherine Hanselman.

๐Ÿ”น Meet special guest Kris Craven, Meteorologist-in-Charge at the National Weather Service office in Topeka, and explore extreme weather events with her cool demonstrations!

๐Ÿ”น View specimens from KU's Invertebrate Paleontology collection, learn about current research projects and more with graduate student Amy Betz!

๐Ÿ”น View incredible reptile & amphibian specimens from our Herpetology research division with Collections Manager Dr. Ana Motta, and learn about ongoing graduate student research projects too!

๐Ÿ”น Meet KU Ecology and Evolutionary Biology graduate student Marina Stoilova, learn about her research on jellyfish, and use a microscope to view live jellies!

๐Ÿ”น Try out a fun, interactive game focusing on the One Health model that examines how human, animal, and plant health are interdependent with Museum Studies graduate student Catherine Dhority!

๐Ÿ”น Explore the incredible world of insects with postdoctoral researcher Dr. Claudia Nunez and KU Entomology Collections Manager Dr. Rachel Osborn.

๐Ÿ”น Learn about monarch butterfly conservation research with Monarch Watch, including research by their new director Dr. Kristen Baum!
