Those dark orbs focus on Graham’s number emblazoned across my chest, and my throat constricts.

His nostrils flare; his hands fist at his side. Before I can even process what he’s doing, he crosses the hall, his stride quick as he wraps a hand around my elbow. Guiding me down the hall, he pauses at a supply room door and wrenches it open, then yanks me inside.

I stumble after him, gasping when he spins around and forces my back against the metal cabinet beside the door. Reaching beside me, he flips the lock in place without a single word as his eyes penetrate mine.

“What are you doing?” I choke out.

“That’s my question, doll. Because it sure as hell looks like you’re wearing a jersey, and it’s not mine.”

“I told you—”

“You told me that you and Graham weren’t actually together.” He pinches my chin with his thumb and forefinger, tipping my head so I’m forced to hold his gaze.

Like I could look anywhere else. Clearly, he doesn’t realize the hold he has on me.

“Or was that a lie?” he asks.

“No.”

“Then, why?”

“He asked me to wear it and I . . . it made him so happy. I figured it was a small ask, a minor gesture . . .” My voice trails off because I’m digging a hole I can’t get myself out of. I have no idea what he wants me to say, but I know he doesn’t believe a word that’s coming from my mouth.

“So, let me get this straight. You’re wearing his jersey because you feel bad? Because you didn’t want to disappoint him?”

I nod, saying nothing, my throat too dry to speak even if I tried.

“Life is full of disappointment, doll, and Graham’s been born with a silver fucking spoon in his mouth. He’s used to getting everything he wants. His whole life has been one giant joyride. But not this time.”

“You’re wrong. His father—”

“His father wants what’s best for him. I wish I could say the same about mine.” His gaze ignites as he searches my face.

“You can lie to him as much as you want, and you can lie to yourself. But you can’t lie to me. Because I know what you really want. Just like I know it’s not him.”

“Atlas . . .” I swallow, unsure of what I want to say. Don’t make this harder than it is? I’m the one making things hard. I’m the one that needs to choose.

His gaze drops to my chest, and his smile turns serpentine. “You can wear his jersey. But we both know who you belong to.”

My heart thunders in my chest as he reaches into his pocket and pulls out a Sharpie. His eyes meet mine once more, so intense, it makes me shiver. “Take it off.”

I blink. “What?”

“I said, take the jersey off.”

My mind reels. I have no idea what he’s going to do. All I know is I’m inclined to listen.

I reach down to the hem of Graham’s jersey, hesitating only a moment before I lift it up over my head, letting it hang from my fingertips. Beneath the shirt, I’m wearing nothing more than a lacy white bralette.

My chest rises and falls with each intake of breath, and a gleam of light enters his eyes as he takes me, eyeing me slowly. He peruses my body at a painstakingly slow pace. The heat of his gaze travels from my waist, slowly singeing a path up my torso to my breasts where he pauses, his eyes an obsidian black, pupils flared so wide I can barely make out where they end and his irises begin.

Goosebumps break out over my exposed skin, hair on end and tingling. I’m a live wire waiting to ignite.

Before I know what he’s doing, he uncaps the pen with his teeth, then steps forward and reaches one hand up to the swell of my breasts and places a palm over my racing heart while every nerve ending in my body comes alive at his touch—every synapse in my brain fires—and it’s not until the tip of the marker meets my skin that I know what he’s doing.

Taking his time, he painstakingly traces the number fifty-two over my breasts, branding me. Once he’s finished, he leans back, his gaze drinking in the sight of his number emblazoned over my skin.

“Fucking perfect,” he whispers, then his eyes meet mine. “You may be walking around with his shirt, Hart, but we both know who you belong to.”

He leans into me until I feel the warmth of his breath on the side of my neck and the graze of his lips against my skin.
My chest rises and falls in a steady rhythm, and I close my eyes to fight the pressure building inside my chest as he says, “You’re mine, doll. I own your heart, and there’s not a damn thing anyone can do about it. Not Graham. Not even you.”

𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐲 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐋𝐢𝐞.🏈
FREE IN KINDLE UNLIMITED ❤️
Also available in audio, paperback, and hardcover. ❤️
