The impossible, takes just a little longer.” <br /> <br /> Here’s where we’re at, we have had three of our original steam locomotives in operation, Locomotive 40, 81 and 93; all of the are older than century, and as such all three have developed issues that are repairable but expensive to fix. <br /> <br /> Currently we have Locomotive 93 but in operation with temporary repairs. She is going to need a new inner boiler throat sheet, siphon tubes and superheater units. The repair bill on Locomotive 93 is estimated at $146,000. We got hit with a triple whammy by her! First, she sheared her Bissell post. A 2.75-inch piece of steel that looked like a hot knife had gone through butter. Then we found loose rivets on her boiler shell that have to be replaced. To replace the rivets, boiler tubes had to come out as shown below. <br /> <br /> And this brings me to the biggest challenge facing the museum, where do you find the people who can do hot riveting? Once an incredibly common skill, it is used infrequently now, but it is a vital necessary skill that we need to learn to keep our steam locomotives running. So, when we do the hot riveting, we will use it as a training exercise which will increase the cost of the repair. <br /> <br /> You might say we are caught in a Catch 22 to learn hot riveting, we need to hot rivet. Learning is going to take time and mistakes will be made. That means some of the rivets will need to be done again. It is expensive, but this is what your what your membership and donations pay for, keeping century-old equipment operating and training the next generation just how to do that!<br /> <br /> The other major repair that we need to do on Locomotive 81 is to replace the boiler knuckle. Huh? I bet you never knew that a boiler had such a thing. The boiler knuckle is where the rear flue sheet is riveted to the crown sheet. After 106 years, its just worn out, the knuckle faces a 2,000-degree fire on one side and is cooled with water on the other side. The repair, cut out the knuckle and install a new one. As you can imagine, going to Auto Zone is not an option! With all of the excitement caused by Locomotives 81 and 93, we have fallen behind on Locomotive 40. And to compound that problem, we found issues with her six drivers. First, we found cracks on her 69-inch driver wheels. Bummer, but repairable. To make repair the wheels, the tires had to come off and this is where we found our second problem. When we took the tires off, shims rained down. This is legitimate but since we are going to do her wheels we might as well get rid of the shims. <br /> <br /> In the picture, the tire is off Locomotive 40’s wheel, the black strips sitting on the floor are the shims that were in between the tire and the wheel. We found this on Locomotive 93, when we did her running gear. It’s repairable but expensive. Thanks to this paper record, we can have new parts manufactured which is very helpful as in the case of the bissell post.<br /> <br /> The paper record is a treasure trove of information that covers all aspects of not only the railroad but they are also tied into the national events such a sending Japanese-American citizens to Internment Camps during World War 2 and more recently the effects of atomic testing on residents of rural Nevada. <br /> <br /> We still have a lot of work to do finish up the archive project. Our goal is to raise $75,000 for the archives.
