Body | "You are serious?! What is wrong with you? I'm running because my so-called mate has someone else, and he doesn't even deny it. I ran because I can't handle another messed up, idiot, self-centred and entitled Alpha to stomp on my heart. If you want to reject me, fine! But don't you dare to come running after me and ask ME why I AM running."
"Elijah."
"What?!"
"Elijah. Not Alpha Jackson. It's just Elijah to you, darling." I raise an eyebrow. It's official; he's completely disillusioned.
—
Elijah P.O.V.
Knock, knock, knock.
I know that knock. Mother.
"Enter." I say, gritting my teeth for her nagging attitude regarding my lack of a Luna.
"Elijah, what are you doing?" I raise an eyebrow at her question, finding it rather obvious what I am doing.
"What does it look like, mother?" She scuffs. Thalia Jackson, my esteemed mother, seemingly does not find my sense of dry humor amusing today. My father is Desmond Jackson, and his grandfather founded Jewel City and our pack; the Jewel Pack. He worked hard in the real estate business, and it paid off. I think ten generations after me could live off the money he and my father have earned in their lifetime, without working, and still be comfortable. But I will not let them down, and they have instilled a high working moral in me since childhood.
I'm the eldest of three. My brother Dale is my beta, only because our beta couple had their baby stolen 18 years ago. Dale is 18, I'm 22 and our youngest sister Lauren is 16. Our parents did it like rabbits, had us, and then dad had the snip. They didn't want any more children, even though the mother acts like all of the young ones in the pack are her own biological children. Like a mother hen.
"Very funny, mister. Dale called. He needs you in town." I raise an eyebrow.
"That's funny, because to me he said he and Selena were coming home in a hurry because he had urgent news." Mother scrunches her nose at the mention of Selena. She is an opportunist, and as so she is trying to get Dale to take her as his chosen mate. I told him he would be kicked out as my Beta if he ever did that.
"Okay, okay, Alpha Derek and his lovely daughter are in town, and they were hoping you would have.."
"No! I'm not meeting anymore boring daughters. I don't care about breed, and you shouldn't either. I will meet my mate when I meet her, and until then I have a pack and family business to run." I dismiss her with a handwave, but she doesn't leave. Instead she sits down.
"Eli. You are 22, you need a Luna! I can't keep doing the Luna duties just because you refuse to take a chosen mate. I only want what is best for you, darling."
"No, you want what is best for you, and who you choose for me. I will not do that. I'm waiting for my fated mate, and that is the end of that." I stare at her over the papers. She sighs, and opens her mouth to argue with me, but the brisk knock on the door prevents her from doing so.
"Come in." Dale opens the door, ready to tell me his urgent news, but he hesitates when he lays eyes on our mother.
"Was there anything else, mother?" She narrows her eyes, her mouth a thin line. Without another word she walks out the door and stomps down the hallway.
"Where's barbie?" I ask, amusement twinkling in my eyes. Dale rolls his.
"Selena had things to attend too."
"So, doing her makeup then. What was that urgent matter?" He closes the door behind him, and in the drift from the doors movement I get a whiff of jasmine and roses. It's fresh and sweet, and makes my mouth go dry from expectations. Fenris perks his ears, his snout sniffing the air from my mind. He wags his tail.
'Is that what I think it is?'
'It could be. But I'm not sure.' Fenris answers with uncertainty.
"There's a newcomer to town." Dale says,
looking at his fingers as if he couldn't care less. I wonder what happened to make him act like this.
"Hold on two seconds, bro. I've mindlinked Ashton to come here and hear this. He needs to be involved as well." Dale nods and we talk about business until Ashton knocks on the door. He walked in before I could say it, knowing we were waiting for him. When he takes a seat, Dale repeats the part with the newcomer.
"And? Humans move all the time." Ashton says, arms crossed. Dale shakes his head.
"Didn't say she's a human, did I?" This gets our attention. She? Maybe I did smell right before. I leaned forward, my attention peaked.
"Rogue?" I growl, hoping it's not true.
"No. A lone wolf. Definitely packless, but she's not a rogue. She oozes power, and she has a lot of knowledge of our laws." His jaw sets into an annoyed expression, and by now I can see what happened.
"She told you off?" I say with laughter. Dale rolls his eyes, as both Ashton and I roll over laughing. Dale is scary looking at best, and no one ever comes near him unless they know him. He's a big softball on the inside, and to have him be told of by a strange girl. This is just all too funny.
"Okay, I'm interested. Where can I meet this lone wolf girl?" Dale smirks.
"She's living in a neutral zone, and she has no intention to trespass into pack land, so you can't do anything about her. But she is renting the old cottage by the lake. The one Amy owns."
"So she thinks she can take a pass on meeting the residing Alpha, huh. Well, let's see about that. We'll give her a couple of days to get comfortable in the cottage before visiting her. I may not be able to get her to move in, but I make sure she is no threat to our pack." Ashton and Dale nod, and leave the office.
In our distance I can hear music blasting from the cottage because all the windows and doors are open to let the air in. Then I can hear something else. A voice. A female voice. Everything in me stops for a second when I hear her singing. Her voice is of an angel, and I just have to see her. Just have to have a glimpse of her. Is she as beautiful as her voice indicates? It draws me in, captures me and sends me in a direct line to craziness.
Then a figure walks out onto the patio, still singing and making happy dance moves. I lift my head, just an inch, and then I see her. She is the image of the goddess herself. Her hair is the color of rich honey, going down her back in long wavy threads. Her body is curvy, but still fit as a she-wolf would be because of our high metabolism. She stops what she's doing, and then her head turns in our direction and I almost howl to the sky in joy. Her eyes are shining green and full of life, though looking a bit suspicious at the moment. Fenris is fighting with me for full control so he can go claim his mate, but we agreed in not doing that.
As she goes back inside I indicate to Dale with my head to go back.
'She's something else, huh.' He knows. Or he suspects.
'You keep her safe until further notice. And Dale. Not a word to mom or dad.' He nods his wolf head.
...
Isabella P.O.V.
On the patio I get the feeling of being watched. It's not an unpleasant feeling, just.. Weird, and a bit unnerving.
'Don't worry, doll. They are not here to hurt us.'
'What do you know, Emmy?'
'I have a feeling, but nothing for sure. I'm just sure they are not here to hurt us.' I shake the feeling and decide to get the other things later. I go inside when I hear the washer go off again.
After changing around again I fold the towels, and the clothes I've done so far before putting them away in the bathroom and bedroom. I have a feeling it's safe to go outside now, and as I look at the clock on the wall in the living room, I decide to go and look around outside before making myself dinner.
Outside I take a walk around the house, smiling when I realize I overlooked a patio out the back as well. It has an old barbeque, some old lawn chairs and a table. Excellent, then I'll just have to get some good meat and charcoal. On the other side of the house than where I parked my car, there is a small but useful shed. It has gardening tools, which I have absolutely no knowledge about, but I can learn. I made a decision to buy myself a computer, as there is already internet installed out here.
I fetch my fishing rod, gear, ax and wood from the truck and put it all in the shed. Then I lock the truck, and move to the back of the house again. It actually has a firepit, but it needs some TLC. That'll be a project for tomorrow.
Emmy growls in my mind, and I sense it as well. Wolves. Plural. The feeling is not hostile, but not exactly friendly either. We decide together to call it a night with exploring and go inside to make some food and get some sleep.
I wake to a knock on the door, and when I look at the time on my phone it says 10.30am. I have never slept this long in my life, or this good.
After going inside last night, I made myself mac n cheese with bacon. It was absolutely delicious, and I'm so happy I can actually cook. Poor Alex if he ever has to cook for himself or someone else. He can burn water. I laugh to myself at the thought, but then a tear slides down my cheek. I wish, not for the first time, that we had been close still. I love him, no matter what he did, I love him. He's my twin.
There's a knock again, and I moan as I get out of bed. I throw a hoodie over my PJ, going out to open for whoever is here. I then wonder who would visit me? I live in the middle of the woods, and no one knows I'm here.
I reach the front door, and when I open it Lauren's smiling face meets me.
"Morning sunshine." She says in a cheerful voice, laughing when I yawn. "Did I really wake you?" She asks, suddenly worried. I nod, but wave her apology off.
"I usually never sleep this late, but I must have needed it." I answer, gesturing to her to come inside.
"What are you doing here, by the way?" She laughs again. I guess she has an easy laugh.
"You said I could visit!"
"Oh, yeah. I didn't think you'd be here already." I lead her to the kitchen, telling her to wait while I get changed. Ten minutes later I emerge from the bedroom in high waisted black jeans and a dusted pink shirt tucked in at the front. My hair is in a high ponytail to get it out of the way. I regretted it last night to have it down while I was cleaning, but after a bath and a good night's sleep I feel reborn.
"Uh, you look nice! Love the color of that shirt." I smile, looking down at myself.
"Thank you! I actually bought it at a thrift shop a while back." Lauren's mouth drops open. I raise an eyebrow.
"What?"
"You shopped at a thrift shop?"
"Yeah, all the time. It's a good way to save money, and get fancy things like this cheap." She shakes her head. She has probably never been to such a place. Her attire screams designer - even her nails are done professionally. I open the fridge to get some food for myself, and am about to offer Lauren some as well, when she gets to her feet.
"Come on, we're going out to get some lunch and then shop around. I know the perfect place."
"Uhm, Lauren, I really like you. You are a volcano of happiness and seems like a genuinely nice person, but I don't have the funds for the kind of shops you go to. Or cafe's for that matter. Sorry." I turn away from her, not wanting the rejection up front. It always hurts. No matter how many times people do it, it still hurts like daggers to my heart. I so desperately want to have a friend, a real friend, but I know that will never happen. I'm enjoying my freedom, knowing it will be on borrowed time. Alpha is a crafty man, he'll surely find me and drag me back. Unless he actually doesn't care. Which is a longshot with his insanity, and how vane he is.
"Who said you were paying for yourself?" She says behind me, and hope blossoms in my stomach, although my brain keeps telling me there's going to be a catch. I feel a hand on my shoulder, and then Lauren turns me around. I look at the floor, not able to meet her eyes. I thought I was getting better, but this behavior lies deep inside me. It has been drilled into me; never look a superior in the eyes. Never give yourself hope. Nothing gets better. You are nothing. You are low, the lowest of the low.
"Isabella, please look at me." Lauren says softly, putting a finger under my chin. I do as she says, but the doubt in my eyes must have given me away. "What happened to you?" I shake my head.
"That's a long sad story that I would rather not go into right now." I answer softly. Lauren hugs me, a feeling so unfamiliar to me that I freeze for a second before returning the hug.
"Well, I'm your friend - we can be best friends! I don't have that many to be honest. Much of the women in my pack are either dumb as a brick, or just wanting to be friends with me to get to my brothers." She lets me go with a small insecure smile I'm not used to seeing on the face of an Alpha's daughter. She's so far up the hierarchy she could care less if people are being fake kind to her, but here she is - hugging a nobody like me and being honest. Because she is honest. I don't know how I know, but there's something around her, a light of sorts, and it's bright white which tells me she's not lying.
"I had friends, but they all turned their backs on me when I was ten." I say, the memories flowing through my mind. I blink to get them to go away, and Emerald purrs in my head - soothing me.
"Come on, bestie. Let's go!"
"Where are we going?" I ask, suspicious.
"I'm going to show you the pack lands, and then we are getting lunch at my favorite little pack cafe. When you see it you'll want to join in a heartbeat." He takes my hand and drags me towards the door. I laugh as I grab my bag, coat and keys.
"I'll follow you." I start to say, but Lauren shakes her head.
"I'm driving, and you'll have no opportunity to regret it." The disdain in my eyes made her laugh again.
We set off in her sleek black sports car. I've never understood what you want with a car like this? It is small and not at all spacey, and you can't have anything in the small almost non existing trunk. Lauren takes off down the dirt road, and soon we are on our way through town to the other side.
"So, what is your pack called?"
"The Jewel Pack, of course. My great grandfather founded the town and the pack. He found jewels in the ground and lake, and then decided to name both town and pack after that. Not the most fancy name or anything, but it's home." Home. I had a home once. A happy, loving and nice home. The pack was my home, until that frightful day. I close my eyes and take a deep breath. Nope, I'm not allowing it to take any space in my mind.
After a good 40 minute drive we turn off the mainroad and down a paved wood road. Forest surrounds us, as it does most of the terrain in this part of the country. Back home it's a rarity, but The Green Forest pack was lucky when they needed pack lands to find the one place with thick and old forest to settle.
"Here we are." Lauren says in a happy voice as we park in front of a mansion of a pack house. I thought the house in my old pack was grand, my oh my was I wrong. Emerald laughs at my small country girl thoughts. Stupid wolf.
"This is something else." I say, and Lauren looks at me strangely.
"It's just a normal pack house."
"This is a mansion compared to what I come from."
"Where do you come from?" She asks too eagerly. I shake my head without looking at her.
"Nope, not going there. Sorry."
"Meh, I tried, didn't I?" She says, taking my hand and going inside the pack house.
I stop dead in my tracks inside. This place is huge! How do they have the funds to.. Wait a minute. She said the Jewel Pack. Ah!
"Uhm, Lauren, a question?"
"Uh huh?" She looks at me while still dragging my hip with her.
"Your brother, the Alpha, what's his name?"
"My name is Alpha Elijah Jackson." A deep alluring voice answers from behind us, and Lauren turns with a squeal and leaps from the stairs we were accenting. I turn more slowly, the scent from the guy behind me entering my nostrils. Emerald howls in joy, and when I'm fully turned we lock eyes. His eyes are topaz with specs of green, and his mouth is full with a smirk lurking in the corner.
'Mate, mate, mate.' Emerald squeals, and I'm about to take a step towards him when a young woman walks in behind him.
"Babe, what's going on?" She asks and my heart shatters into a million pieces. He already has a girlfriend, or maybe she's his chosen mate. Either way, I'm once again being rejected. Alpha Elijah freezes when the unfamiliar woman touches his arms, his eyes still locked on mine.
Time seems to stand still, but my mind is racing a mile a minute. This can't be happening. Why is this happening? What have I done to the universe to have it be so cruel to me?
"Nice to meet you Alpha Jackson, now if you will excuse me." I keep my head held high, Lauren looking utterly confused between us and then I see understanding dawn in her eyes.
"WHAT HAPPENED ELI?!" She screams when I'm out the door. Before I know it I'm running to the trees. I don't know these woods, but somehow I'll find my way home.
Behind me I can hear someone chase me, and I run faster to reach the treeline before they can catch me. As I do a loud growl rips through the air, and I make the mistake of looking behind me. It's Alpha Jackson. I come to an abrupt stop, figuring he wants to get the rejection part over and done with.
'Are we moving again?' Emerald asks, worried and sad. She's not asking me to not reject or accept a rejection, she's worried about moving again.
'No! We'll just keep out of his way. He can't force us to move.' She sighs.
"Where are you going?" Alpha asks, clearly annoyed about something. Probably me making him chase me to be free.
"Are you serious?" I ask incredulously, and he nods. I put my hands on my hips and stare at him.
"You are serious?!
"I'm NOT your darling!" With that I turn around and run into the forest. I shift into Emerald, not caring about my clothes. I don't hear it rip, but that might be because I am absolutely outraged over this moron's audacity. |
