Body | THE LORDSHIP OF JESUS CHRIST — Part 5

We continue our focus on ROMANS 14:7-9: "For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord's. For to this end Christ died and rose and lived again, that He might be LORD of both the dead and the living." Today, consider the question, "What does it mean for Jesus to be your life's reigning and ruling Lord? What will be the key implications of His divine dominion in your life?

The first truth we want to contemplate upon, as authentic followers of Jesus Christ, is that "WE MUST ACKNOWLEDGE THE REALITY OF HIS LORDSHIP." Paul is writing by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in Romans 14:9, when he declares, "For to this end (for this purpose) Christ died and rose and lived again, that He might be Lord…" When a born-again believer reads this verse, he must be alerted to the biblical truth that "JESUS DIED TO REDEEM YOU, AS LORD"!

The term "redeem" is taken from the Roman slave market language. It was the expression used to describe "the purchase of a slave from a Roman slave market." During the era when Paul penned these words, history informs us that there were over 10 million slaves in the Roman Empire. These slaves came from many different countries and races.

Think for a moment that a master has arrived in the city of Rome to purchase a slave for himself. Moreover, unlike many, this particular master has loving, gracious, and merciful purposes in mind in buying this slave. The master would walk through the slave market and observe the manifold variety of slaves that were on display. Eventually, he would sovereignly choose a slave for himself by his own exclusive selection. Then, this master would pay the appropriate price for the redemption of this slave. Once the master made this needed transaction, he claimed that slave as his own purchased possession. Yet, remember that this master maintained many loving, gracious, and merciful purposes in his heart in this personal acquisition.

Similarly, when the Lord Jesus Christ redeems a sinner, He purchases them out of the slave market of sin. The precious blood of the Lamb has redeemed this sinner at the highest price! Not only has this slave been rescued from the sentence of sin, but he has also been redeemed from slavery to sin! He has been bought and paid for by his loving, gracious, and merciful Master! I remind you that conversion is not the end of slavery. On the contrary, conversion is instead the exchange of masters!

What are the practical implications of this redemption from the slave market of sin? The scripture states, "I am not my own. I have been bought at a price. Therefore, I am to glorify God in my body and spirit, which now belong to the Lord". Every redeemed child of God no longer belongs to themselves! They are the purchased possessions of the Lord Jesus Christ. Now, all that they are, all that they have and hope to be, becomes the rightful property of their redeeming Master!

Carefully look at verse 8b, "We are the LORD'S." If the Lord Jesus has forgiven and freed you, He has redeemed you. If He has redeemed you, then He has bought you for Himself. If He has bought you for Himself, He owns you. You are not your own possession and property anymore. The Lord Jesus Christ is your Master, King, Lord, and rightful Owner. Once, you were slaves of sin. But now, having been set free from sin and becoming slaves of God, you have your fruit unto holiness and eternal life. Dear friend, to acknowledge the reality of His Lordship means that you have come to embrace the truth that "Jesus died to redeem you, as Lord!" |
