About John Leslie “Wes” Montgomery …
Born: March 6th, 1923 - Died: June 15th, 1968 (45 years)
Wes Montgomery is, without a doubt, one of the greatest guitarists in the history of jazz. Wes' innovative technique of plucking the strings with the side of his thumb and his extensive use of octaves revolutionized modern jazz guitar during the 1950s and 60s.

Wes' rise to fame was meteoric. He quickly gained international recognition from 1948 to 1968, recording a string of successful albums with Riverside, Verve, and A&M records. His exceptional musicianship earned him three GRAMMY nominations, two GRAMMY awards, and multiple Downbeat Magazine Critics Poll honors for Best Jazz Guitarist from 1960 to 1967. He also made unforgettable appearances on popular television shows such as The Hollywood Palace and The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson.

Montgomery was known for collaborating with his brothers Buddy (Charles F.) and Monk (William H.) and organist Melvin Rhyne. He initially focused on hard bop, soul jazz, and post-bop, but later transitioned to more pop-oriented instrumental albums that achieved mainstream success.

His guitar style had a significant impact on the development of jazz fusion and smooth jazz. Montgomery's exceptional talent as both a leader and sideman led him to work with the most prolific jazz musicians of his time, including Lionel Hampton, Charles Mingus, Fats Navarro, Freddie Hubbard, Cannonball Adderley, Tommy Flanagan, John Coltrane, Johnny Griffin, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb, Jimmy Smith, David Baker, Oliver Nelson, and many more.

Wes Montgomery's influence continues to inspire and shape generations of guitarists who have followed him, such as George Benson, Pat Martino, Larry Coryell, John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Lee Ritenour, and Russell Malone.

ABOUT THE INDY JAZZ FOUNDATION
The Indianapolis Jazz Foundation is a 501c(3) founded in 1996 to preserve the legacy and promote the future of jazz in Indianapolis.
The Premier event, Indy Jazz Fest, is an annual jazz festival presented by the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation and our partners. This community-wide festival celebrates Indianapolis’ rich jazz legacy.

Native jazz icons such as Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, Wes Montgomery, J. J. Johnson, Slide Hampton, and Freddie Hubbard helped shape Indianapolis’ musical landscape. Their efforts were enriched by music venues and clubs on Indiana Avenue and throughout the city, cultivating a “scene” that significantly influenced this uniquely American music genre.

At the festival and other events throughout the year, audiences experience Indianapolis’ inspiring jazz heritage through modern-day world-class music, workshops, panel discussions and social experiences. We appeal to a community excited about the future of quality music and the benefits to the cultural landscape of Indianapolis.
