I have a few thoughts to share about some of the other songs, but not enough to constitute a whole separate post per song, so I’ll do one of these summaries for each album to close out the end credits of the movie that has been Groove Addiction.

Final thoughts on our first album, “For All Intents and Purposes”…

- Words: Funk idea I had (about a nice guy fed up with finishing last) that Meven helped me finish. Couldn’t come up with a bridge, so we went with his weird idea to do a left turn into a Kid Rock metal-ish scene change. It shouldn’t have worked (one might argue it didn’t), but I think it somehow does. Love the nasty bass Josh Merritt laid down on this track.

- Day In The Life: I had chords and melody to this groovy mid-tempo idea, but no words. I played it for Meven and asked him what vision it put in his mind. His response: “I’m seeing a little fish about to be eaten by a bigger fish, who’s about to be eaten by a bigger fish, who’s about to be eaten by a bigger fish.” I stared blankly at him for a minute, then said, “okaaay, so…what ELSE does it make you think of?” He started laughing. We eventually settled on writing about the daily grind of traffic and work.

- Spaceship In A Bottle: Dark topic about a beautiful girl with a traumatic past seeking to escape through pills. I’ve always loved the slow jam groove to this one and the harmonies.

- Mr I Don’t Know: This isn’t a great song, but it does have some great lines in it. My favorite: “Define the rules that don’t apply to you, then take take a bow for what you didn’t do. But hey, it’s okay. Who needs the truth? We’ve no right to judge, despite the truth.” Plenty of politicians this song could apply to. Also still love the harmonies of the instrumental bridge and the guitar countermelody underdeath it.

***

There are a few songs on our albums that I don’t love, some that make me cringe for various reasons (especially lyrically, now that I am follower of Jesus and a pastor at a Christian School). But they’re an accurate marker of where my head and heart was 2003-2007. In spite of that, I’m still very proud of most of what we recorded. While it may sound a bit dated now, I think the vast majority of it holds up well over time.

Writing, recording and releasing this album was a huge step for us creatively, as we had established a reputation and grown a following over our first five years together as a cover band. We packed 3rd & Lindsey for our CD release party; so many folks wanted to see what would create as a band. Little B attended that event after having left the band a year earlier, and he rejoined the band shortly after because of what he saw us do that night. He remained in the band ever since.

Twenty years after the release of this album, I’m so grateful we saved up the money, pulled together the resources, brought in our buddy Kelly to produce (and other friends to add their talents), and made these sessions happen. The final product was the fuel for our belief that we should keep going.

Enjoy! - JJ

https://open.spotify.com/album/00BOMIRFPG5FoWdeAjOjbk?si=aVwghNjVTeq-PyY5BuaB_w
