Body | ✨How to use your first credit card 💳

The age old tale of only using your credit card for emergencies is dead. Use it but responsibly.

✨For beginners- use your card for small purchases each month. Such as fill up your gas tank a couple times, coffee, lunch etc. make sure it’s something small so you don’t go into debt. Especially if you’re just starting out. Be sure it’s something that you can pay off every time you get paid.

✨If you can make multiple payments on your credit card (at least 2) then you’re in the game. This is why the purchases should be small. Buy something that you usually buy like a small run to the grocery store, gas etc. That way you already have the money for it in your budget. You can pay it off some days or a week later after the charge posts.‼️Pay it back, that money is not your money it’s to pay off what you spent on the card.

✨ There are a few important dates. That’s the statement date and due date.

✨Statement date- whatever balance is on the credit card on this date is what will be reported to the credit bureau

✨Due date - The date where at least your minimum payment is due.

On your due date you MUST pay at least your minimum payment. Even if it’s only $5 DO NOT BE LATE. 1-2 days before your statement date pay your balance down to 1-3% of the cards limit.

For example: my due date is on the 8th. So I can choose to pay off my entire balance so I don’t occur interest or I can choose to only pay the minimum payment. My statement date is on the 13th. So I might go fill up my gas tank or buy some lunch on the 10th so that a small balance is showing on the 13th.

The credit bureaus will report this small balance to the bureaus. Also, It doesn’t matter how much you run up the card. As long as before that statement date it’s paid back down. Just please use with caution. It’s easy to go into debt. This is why I say keep it small.

People will argue you down about paying it off in full or leaving a balance. I say play around with it and see what works for you. It’s all about what method will yield you the best results. |
