Body | I don’t recall anyone ever asking me over the years what the heck “Lemon Pie Tangerine” meant, until my daughter asked recently.

It’s a kinda funny story.

This song started as a chord progression I’d come up with, and brought it to Meven to help me write a melody and lyrics. I don’t recall how we decided to start going in the direction we did, but once we got the ball rolling, the lines came quickly.

The song was about writer’s block. We thought it was a hilarious idea, he and I sitting together, struggling to write lyrics to a song about struggling to write lyrics.

It would be the story of a guy who had just been on a date with a new girl, and planned to impress her with his talent by writing a song customized just for her (just like he’d done dozens of times before with other girls in his past.) But he couldn’t find words anymore that weren’t meaningless jibberish.

We liked the idea that writer’s block was about to help him discover that racking up a history of shallow, superficial relationships had come too easy for him. Writing songs was too easy for him too. Perhaps his string of relationships and the songs he wrote about them didn’t add up to much worthwhile if he dared look back at it all?

Meven and I easily wrote all the lyrics to this song except for the last line of the chorus. We were at a loss; couldn’t come up with anything. This was an important line which sorta demanded that it sum up the song and probably be the song title. The melody suggested six syllables. What phrase would accomplish this?

The humor of the irony was not lost on us as we struggled to come with a meaningful phrase. It suddenly dawned on us that the only thing the phrase could rightfully be was something meaningless.

Thus “Lemon Pie Tangerine.” It rolled off the tongue well for the 3-part harmony and *seemingly* had nothing to do with the rest of the song. This was our musical equivalent of an MC Escher painting. lol

We were surprised more folks weren’t confused by it. Maybe everyone got the semi-hidden meaning. Maybe they never thought about it. Who knows? If anyone was confused, they didn’t ask us.

A couple quick notes:

- Marshall Moody’s guitar choices on this track are especially tasty! It’s a bluesy, groovy tune, and I loved what he brought to the table.

- My piano solo was a struggle. I kept trying different things in multiple passes and nothing was fitting. The more I’d be unhappy with errors and need another chance at it, the more I started sweating and feeling embarrassed and frustrated. I got into my head. Thankfully producer Kelly Schoenfeld finally suggested we break for a bit for me to clear my head. When we came back, he encouraged me to relax and not overthink it. Just play whatever came out naturally and don’t even worry about whether it’s “wrong” or not. I nailed it in one pass after that once he started rolling.

- The 3-part harmony on the scooped notes (“Tan..ge..rine”) were as fun to record as they were to sing live.

- I remember B Haley loved the groove and feel of the verses but the left turn to a 50s doo wop-ish chorus in a different key took awhile to grow on him. Our weird ideas sometimes took awhile to grow on ya.

Enjoy! - JJ

https://open.spotify.com/track/45c4ayNlYeVvfi2WFIgihS?si=VPcbJ9mASgGxy-M9MZH7CQ&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A00BOMIRFPG5FoWdeAjOjbk |
