Mary stood on the balcony of the room she had slept in for the past three years. She didn't want to turn on the lights; the darkness of the night would hide the tears rolling down her cheeks.
Chapter 1 The Man Who Bought Her
"It was dusk, and the sky was dim. An expensive wedding car slowly pulled into the Brooks family villa. However, the groom wasnt in the car. Because the groom was dead. David Ellison was the eldest son in his family. He had accidentally ingested poison, and, despite much effort to resuscitate him, the doctors had declared him brain dead. Only his heart continued to beat faintly, but it could stop at any moment. Davids grandfather, Richard Ellison, was superstitious, which was why he insisted on finding a wife for David before he died. He wanted a marriage for luck for his grandson. He had searched across the city for a woman willing to marry David. As a reward, hes willing to pay Five billion dollars! No matter how powerful and influential his family was, it was near impossible to find someone who would willingly let their daughter marry a man who was basically dead. However, the Brooks family actually accepted his proposal. Caroline, dressed in a red bridal gown and veil, looked at herself in the mirror and laughed. “Miss Caroline, its time. The car is waiting downstairs,” the butler reminded her. “Lets go.” “Alright.” Caroline stood up and got into the car without looking back at her house. If she married David, she would inevitably become a widow someday. But she would also bear the name Mrs. Ellison, it was certainly a title that commanded respect. No one would dare bully her again. And if I stayed with my family? Ill be nothing more than a lowly stepdaughter, Ill constantly be at the mercy of others. Caroline thought. Caroline knew that she had always been a pawn to her stepparents, they always used her as they pleased. Even if she didnt marry David, she would eventually be married off to someone else for their benefit. Marrying a dead man doesnt seem so bad, at least Ill get to live a quiet life. When Caroline looked out of the car window, she realized, This isnt the road to the Ellison residence! “Are you going the wrong way?” She asked the driver. “Nope.” “But this isnt the direction to the Ellison residence,” she replied firmly, a growing unease stirred within her. “Stop the car!” Instead of stopping, the driver stepped on the gas. Moments later, a strange aroma filled the car. When she realized something was wrong, it was already too late. Her head tilted backward, and she lost consciousness. At a hotel suite. Caroline woke up, still feeling dizzy. Her body was weak and powerless. There were voices coming from outside the room. “The Brooks family sure knows how to do business. First, they earned five billion just by agreeing to marry off their daughter, then, they sold her away to another man to earn another big sum.” “Shes adopted anyway, so why should they care?” Another voice replied. “They have raised her for over twenty years, they have to recoup their costs somehow.” “How heartless, the Ellison family had already paid them so much, and theyre still this greedy.” Caroline heard every word clearly. Only then did she understand that all of this was orchestrated by her stepparents! Before sending her to the Ellison family, they had sold her to a wealthy man at a hotel for her virginity. After all, with David on the verge of death, there was no way he could or would ever touch her. Caroline bit her lip hard. Even though Im adopted, Im still a living, breathing person. Even an owner would feel some attachment to their pet after raising it for twenty years, how can they treat me like this?Thud, thud, thud. Steady footsteps approached from afar and stopped at the door. Caroline felt her heart skip a beat. The man who had bought her had finally arrived! The room was pitch black, there was not a single light on. The man walked straight to the bed without saying a word. He began to loosen his tie and undress himself. Caroline couldnt see his face, only the outline of a tall figure. “No Dont” She let out a weak murmur. The man paused. Then, he leaned over to rest both hands on both sides of her waist. His breathing was heavy, and his body burned like fire. “Everythings been arranged, and now you want to back out?” His voice was magnetic, raspy, and cold. “Stop pretending to be so noble.”
Chapter 2 , Wrong Room!
"No, I was forced to do this! Caroline screamed internally. Caroline had no way to resist. She didnt even have the strength to get out of bed, let alone push the man off her. That night, she was tormented, tossed, and turned around, all the way until the early hours of the morning. By then, the man was completely exhausted and fell into a deep sleep. When there was no more noise coming from inside the room, the men who stood guard outside finally entered. They lifted Caroline and carried her away. They had to get her back to the Ellison residence before dawn! Not long after, the sky began to brighten up. Suddenly, a loud shout came from the room next door. “Why is it empty in here? Why is the bed still made? Wheres Mr. David?” The familiar voice woke the man, who furrowed his brow and slowly opened his eyes. “Here,” he said as he opened the door, still half naked. Outside, his assistant, William, appeared panicked and surprised, “Mr. David, how How” David pressed his lips together. “Hmm?” David was an exceptionally handsome man, he had high cheekbones, sharp eyebrows, and piercing eyes. There was an air of authority about the way he moved his eyes and gestured his hands, he was an intimidating man, to say the least! “Youve gone to the wrong room!” William said with a startled voice, “Mr. David, your room is next door!” Davids expression shifted as he examined the room numbers. Its true! I got the wrong room! So the woman whom I was so rough with last night Was not the woman arranged by William! No wonder she had refused and told him “no.” David had thought she was playing hard to get, but now he realized that she was innocent! “Mr. David, then The drug you took last night Did it work?” William asked cautiously. “It worked.” “But” William was confused. The woman hed arranged for David was in the next room. How did the drug work? Was there a woman in this room too? “Find out who stayed in this room last night,” ordered David. “Make sure to find her, quick!” “Yes, sir.” “Prepare the car, were going back to the house.” David took large steps as he left the hotel through a secret passage. He couldnt stay for long, as he needed to return to his house so that he could continue pretending to be dead. But he couldnt keep up the act much longer. It was time to act. The Ellison family was the real deal, it was one of the wealthiest and most prestigious families in the world. Although the family looked flashy from the outside, it was actually filled with power struggles and backstabbing behind the scenes. After years of infighting, someone had finally poisoned David in an attempt to kill him! So, David had played along. He had secretly swapped the poison for another drug, it weakened his heartbeat and created the illusion of brain death, just to fool everyone. However, this drug contained ingredients that required a womans presence to activate. It was actually not a big deal for David, but he had made the mistake of walking into the wrong room at the last minute. At the Ellison residence. David stood by his bed. He quickly changed into a hospital gown and put on a breathing mask with practiced ease. Just as he was about to lie down, the door suddenly opened without warning! Caroline, who was exhausted and sore, entered the room. She had planned to take a bath, but the bathroom door in the master bedroom was broken and wouldnt open. So, she went next door to use the other bathroom. But when she looked up, she was met with a pair of deep black eyes, dark enough to seem like they could swallow her whole. She froze as she stared at the mans handsome face, her eyes were wide open in shock. “David, you youre awake?”
