Body | My son’s high energy has always been difficult to control. No matter how much exercise he had, it never seemed to be enough and I found myself “hovering” to make sure he and his siblings were safe. One day stands out more than others, where I had tried everything to “control” my son’s behavior. We had gone to the park for 2 hours, came home and had a picnic, and then I set up the inflatable bounce house for him to jump in. I optimistically started getting dinner ready and was thinking that since he had so much exercise today the evening was going to be a breeze. And then it began… Over the next hour my high energy son accidentally jumped on my daughter’s hand, broke a huge lego set inside, and was just being a handful, in general. The house was chaotic: One son was upset because it was too loud, my daughter was crying because her hand hurt, our youngest wanted to be held because he stepped on broken lego pieces. Meanwhile my other son was happily doing headstands on the couch unaware of the chaos around him. Dinner turned into “Plan B” and was late so everyone was “hangry,” including me. The late dinner pushed bathtime back, which pushed bedtime back. EVERYTHING was taking longer. I was sitting on the couch that night and all I wanted to do was cry. We were doing all the things I could think of to get his energy out so that we could have a “good” evening. My son (and I) were on the move all day. Why was he not as tired as I was? I was overwhelmed, exhausted, and frustrated. I couldn’t get past feeling like I was not a good enough mom. That night I stopped thinking like a parent and dug into my skill-set as a Pediatric Occupational Therapist. What I chose to do next has changed things dramatically for the better in my home. NOW my mission is to share what I’ve learned to empower and inspire parents so they can better enjoy their time with their families and kids. I know this journey has been a GAME CHANGER for me and now for so many of my clients, and it’s why I put together my 2 Types of Activities That Can Help Calm Kids Down. You can download your copy → |
