Body | I can safely say that I have NEVER had this many notifications on facebook! You guys!! It’s happening!! I’m mentioning this not to sound full of myself, but because it means it’s working. People are reading my story and realizing what REALLY happens in an ER. I’ve been saying this since it came out, but I need to watch the new Pitt show about the ER. Because everyone I’ve talked to says that the show is the most accurate representation of what actually happens in an ER that they’ve ever seen. Maybe that’s what this movement needs. Treat it like a care plan!! Haha educate the public. Educate that 1 in 4 nurses (in the hospital setting) has been affected by or a victim of physical violence by a patient. Today was beautiful. I found out that the ER was short staffed around 8am maybe and I told the powers that be that I would pick up… but only if I could come in sometime between 130p-2p and only stay until 7p since I have to be back tomorrow at 7a. So, okay fine.. deal. I show up around 145ish.. place is on fire. I currently have to take over 3 patients from the nurse that’s 9–9 and actually supposed to be triaging the 3 people in the waiting room. So I jump in, deal with dumpster fire after dumpster fire and just continuously extinguishing fires. I love extinguishing fires I realized it’s one of my favorite things. I can pretty much solve 99% of problems that arise during my shift, and that makes it easy to understand if I mess something up or forget to chart something or anything really, it’s actually OK. The building isn’t going to burn down. Nobody is going to let anybody get hurt time is going to go on. The next shift will arrive and Kelly goes home to give kisses to her French bulldog brioche. So putting out dumpster fires immediately when I arrived at work. Continue to put out dumpster fires, while trying to stay organized and on task while trying to educate one a nursing student on how to properly place a nasal gastric tube for decompression of a small bowel obstruction and the reason behind why we’re doing it and how we’re going to do it. And two a fresh out of school, passed her nclex, has a job, baby nurse on how to organize your thoughts and make a plan of action in the moment. And three a somewhat new grad, has approximately a year of experience on a MedSurg floor.. with I think one year of experience as an ER tech? how to clean up someone else’s mess. Long story short I picked up a princess shift for XR pay planning on working from 1:45 PM to 7 PM because I have to be there at 7 AM again in the morning. I did not leave until approximately 10 PM and normally I would be very upset about that because I remember mentioning to the new grad LND nurse that it’s almost 645. I’m gonna get out of here on time. Nope not out of there until 10 PM. Why? Because my team needed help. It’s that simple and it was that easy. I say all this to say that I have 50 notifications on my Facebook for a reason you guys. I came into work expecting something - something went wrong and didn’t go the way that I had planned it , but that is what being a great ER nurse is all about. You roll with the punches. And sometimes, you don’t check your phone until you have 50 notifications about amazing stories of healing and questions (hopefully!) about my journey and how i got where i am today. Will update tomorrow When I am back in the fire at 7 AM ❤️ |
