A heavy bounce awakens you.
You jolt upright but can't see anything in the darkness.

It's all right.
You're in the cabin.
You're safe.

And yet… The hairs at the back of your neck go up. You sense a presence.

Your exposed foot is ice cold, so you pull the comforter. It doesn't budge, as if a heavy weight
rests on top of it.

Fear rips down your spine. Someone's in this bed with you.

Your fear's confirmed when you hear an exhalation of pure satisfaction.

You leap out of bed, feeling for the flashlight you keep on the nightstand. Your hands close around the cold metal as you flick it on.
"Who's there?"

"What the f--?" a deep, growly voice asks.

The narrow beam of light hits the wall, zigzags across the bedroom and lands on the bed.

Oh, no! What should be an empty expanse of sheets and blanket is taken up by a man.

There's a stranger in your bed.

You jerk the light up to his face to find him staring at you. "Get out," you shriek. "Get out of my cabin right now."

You grab your phone but remember there's no service thanks to the blizzard.

When he sits up, the duvet falls, exposing a large, bare chest. Is he undressed?

Shielding his eyes with a hand, he shouts, "Who the f-- are you?"

Your scalp bristles, and your heart leaps into your throat. "I live here."

"No, you don't." He leans over, patting the floor. "I own this place."

What if he's reaching for something to hurt you with?
You drop to your knees, sweep your hand under the bed, and whisk out the bat you stash there.
When you pop back up, you brandish it at him. "Out, mo-fo."

Totally unfazed, he sticks his hand inside a sweater and throws it on over his head.

Why is he being so calm about all this? Also, that's a very expensive cashmere sweater.

"I'm sorry if you got caught out in the snowstorm, but you can't stay here," you say.

"Sweetheart, I'm not going anywhere." He eyes you with such resolve that fight-or-flight kicks in. "You realize I can grab you by the scruff of your neck and toss you out, right?"

You slam the bat on the mattress, just an inch away from his thigh. "Try me, jerk."

"Jeez." He falls back onto the pillow. "I just want to sleep." He sighs. "Look, I don't know how you got in here, but I don't rent this cabin out."

"Well, obviously, you do." You lift an arm before dropping it to your side. "My money's going somewhere. I'm paying $25,000 a month for this place, and I'm not going anywhere."

"25 grand, huh?" He pretends to be impressed. "This place is worth that much?"

Rude. "For my privacy, yes. It's worth it."

"Well, I don't know who bamboozled you, but that money's not going into my bank account." He looks at the flashlight and makes a gimme motion.

"Not a chance, buddy," you say.

"Technically, it's mine," he says. "But I'm getting out of bed to find my boxers, so unless you want to see my privates swinging in the wind, you'll hand it over."

"You've got nothing I haven't seen." Moving around the bed, you flash the light onto the floor and watch him scoop up his black boxer briefs and jeans. Once he's dressed, he heads out of the room.

Oh, thank goodness. He's leaving.

You follow him to make sure he actually walks out the door. Instead, you find him on the couch. "What're you doing?"

The man drops his attitude. "Look, I've been traveling since noon, and all I want to do is crash. I want to sleep on the mattress that I personally carried from the delivery truck to my bedroom because the drivers weren't allowed to 'climb stairs,' and they decided the one step up to my porch was considered a stair."

"How'd you get in here anyway?" he asks. "There are only two keys, and I have them both."

Your gaze cuts away. Because your answer drives it home. "I broke in."

He folds his arms across his chest. "Come again?"

"I needed a place to go," you explain. "And a friend rented this cabin for me. She told me where the key was, but I couldn't find it. So, I broke the window."

"Huh." He pulls a set of keys out of his pocket. "Look at that. I didn't have to break into my own cabin at all. I wonder who gets the bed?"
