How I use this student-tested method of teaching Kodály-inspired songs and games to preK-6 music students…

…without having to search pre-made “cookie-cutter” music curricula.

I started teaching music 25 years ago, long before there were any online music curricula…

…so I began a quest to find songs and games that would both be:

-------> Fun and engaging for both student and teacher
-------> Perfect at teaching the underlying concepts I need to teach in order to adhere to standards.

My search failed miserably.

I flailed around, looking at hundreds of song books, not really knowing what I was doing.

I then started to research music curricula…

…but I did not want to follow someone else’s “one size fits all” music curriculum.

I know my students best, and I know what material works best for them.

So I made what turned out to be a very smart decision:
I embarked on studying all three levels of Kodály.

This changed my professional life forever.

I now had a framework to build a curriculum that would satisfy both aspects of my quest.

So now it was time to roll up my sleeves and put a curriculum together…

…but the important thing for me was that it was something that I would want to use.

I began organizing the songs that just seem to click with my students…

…and discarding the ones that didn’t.

My first filing system was a good old-fashioned file box with hand-written index cards.

And that system served me well for years.

But I would be so deathly afraid of losing that box that I had to digitize my notes.

I then started to show these digitized notes to my music teacher friends, and they all begged me to share my ideas with them.

At that point I realized that I needed to share it with the entire world…

…and so I created The Singing Classroom!

https://thesingingclassroom.com

I developed The Singing Classroom with one mission:

Give hundreds of Kodály-inspired songs and games to teach PreK-6th graders that they will love.

I built a searchable database of all of these songs and games.

The database is searchable by 16 different categories which includes grade, genre, and musical concepts.

I want teachers to be able to learn this material quickly...

...so I created clear and concise videos and animations that demonstrate the songs and games.

It was also important to me that teachers be able to share this material directly with their students…

..so I developed videos teachers could show directly to their students if they choose.

The material is high quality…

…folk songs from around the world along with Kodály-inspired songs and games that I created.

The content is engaging.

I give suggestions on how to exactly teach the activity so students will beg to do it over and over.

I provide printable posters that can be printed out or project them directly on a smartboard.

I incorporate Orff instruments into many of the activities that accompany the songs.

I even show how I use creative manipulatives, including puppets, balls, sticks and more to help make teaching more exciting.

The Kodály-inspired material aligns perfectly with national teaching standards.

My goal is simple:
Make the music teacher in the classroom the hero!

Too many of today's online music curricula are designed to make the creator the hero.

That person is thousands of miles away from your classroom, which dehumanizes the teaching experience.

There is an increased connection between you and your students when you are the one teaching the song and game.

And these days, more than ever, it’s important to nurture this all-important bond.

My goal is to help get you there.
