One night, when Meven and I lived only a few minutes from each other, we were at my house when he mentioned a general song idea he had but hadn’t started working on yet.

He’d recently discovered he was going to be a dad (to his first son Ethan), and he was overwhelmed at the enormity of what this new role he was about to take on meant.

He wanted me to help him write a song to his unborn child. Whoa.

Unfortunately, he was about to leave when he dropped this idea on me. I can’t remember where he had to go, but I do recall that he mentioned it as a suggestion for our next writing session. There wasn’t time to start it that night.

After he left, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. What would I want to write to my child if I was in his position? Where to even begin?

I had nothing planned the rest of that night, and this was obviously the pre-smartphone era. I found myself bored a few hours later (we don’t allow ourselves to be bored anymore; I now often say “boredom is the birthplace of creativity”, but that’s other story) and so I sat down to see what might happen at the piano.

Suddenly a whole bunch of thoughts flooded out of my brain into my fingers about Meven’s song idea. What do I do? Should I see where it takes me while this moment is happening? (Creativity could never be turned on and off like a faucet for me. It was hard to corral and control.) Should I wait until Meven is with me?

I paced around the house, but the ideas didn’t stop, even if I avoided the piano. There was no way to stop them. So I started jotting them down. I called Meven and left him a message. I told him to come over the next day as soon as he could, because the song was coming to me.

Over the next few hours, the entire first verse and chorus poured themselves out. Finally I started getting tired, so I went to bed, thinking if he liked what I had so far, we could co-write the second verse together tomorrow.

But I couldn’t sleep. I kept waking up with another line, then another. Then I’d fall back asleep, then wake back up with the next line.

By the time Meven came over the next day, I’d written the whole song. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Thankfully he didn’t get upset that I took his idea and ran with it. He said he loved it and laughed at the thought that I wrote his song for his son. This is how “Just Be” came to be.

A few notes:

- Terry Grant, a guitar player and DJ friend, provided all the samples and record scratches on this whole album. Remember, this was 2003, when that was considered a huge cool factor (think Sugar Ray), and we were so excited to have him add his seasoning to our songs. I particularly appreciated the drum loop and “I know you’re gonna dig this” that he added to this one.

- I think it’s funny that I wanted to include a line about video games, and picked the one gaming system that would become obsolete (Sega), forever dating the lyric to that era. lol

- Whether Mevo had a hand in writing a song or not, his intimate vocal delivery always made it his song. It’s a huge part of what made him such an amazing singer.

- We were blessed with amazing producers in Kelly Schoenfeld (the first two albums) and Robert Wright (the third album) and amazing guitarists (Marshall Moody on the first album and Little B on the second two). They worked so well together to create perfect guitar parts for every song. This song was no exception. The production was top notch. There are probably too many details I could point to production-wise on our songs, because these synopses are already long-winded as it is. Suffice it to say, we are so grateful for their talent and insight.

Enjoy - JJ

https://open.spotify.com/track/29GadMslZ4UYwRIbQrM1ZI?si=Br1Xyy1qTkiBKnbGWb0hjw
