Body | There is so much wrong with telling someone to "choose a positive thought." 1️⃣ We cannot choose what thoughts pop up in our heads. If we could, everyone would choose pleasant ones, and "intrusive" thoughts wouldn't exist. Sure, you can intentionally think something, but see how long that lasts before your mind is called back to something else. When we label thoughts as "positive or negative," it implies some are "bad" to have. Thoughts are neutral. Your judgment of them is not. 2️⃣ This is terrible advice. When we try not to have certain thoughts, it makes them stronger. So if you're trying to suppress any thought that you deem bad with a positive one, you're going to find yourself with more of the ones you don't like. 3️⃣ A more apt phrase would be "Be intentional where you're thinking." This is where the distinction between "choosing to have a thought" and "choosing to engage with that thought" (i.e., thinking) is so important. We can choose what thoughts we pay attention to and engage with — that's called thinking. Thinking is a behavior. So are worrying, ruminating, processing, analyzing, replaying, rehearsing. |
