Body | Very few things in life are linear. Change certainly isn’t. There’s this perception that if you return to an old behavior, you must be failing. You’re not. Progress includes setbacks. It’s how we respond to that “failure” that matters. The areas where I can separate my self-worth from the experience of failure feel SO MUCH BETTER than those areas where it's still hard to do. I try to remind myself, as I do my clients, to REMOVE THE STORY. I may have screwed up, but the story I tell myself about the screw-up is what keeps me miserable and stuck. Accept what happened, remind myself this is part of growth, and find my next small step. If this sounds like you too, I have a whole chapter in my book devoted to changing your relationship with failure. |
