DO NOT AGGRESSIVELY STRETCH A TRAPPED NERVE!
If you think you have trapped a nerve in your neck, your back, your shoulder, your wrist, (or indeed anywhere!); forceful, sustained, or repetitive stretching can actually make it worse.
A normal happy nerve needs to glide freely on it's journey through all the bony and soft tissue tunnels it uses when linking the brain to the body part it is taking messages to or from.
If a nerve is stuck, it can't glide. If you try to stretch it from either above, or below the area of entrapment you effectively 'yank' at the area and stress the already unhappy neural tissue. It will respond by producing symptoms anywhere along it's course. Not necessarily just at the sight of the entrapment.
For example, a nerve stuck in your neck can confusingly present as pain in the back of your arm, or in your forearm. A nerve stuck at the bottom of your spine might feel like pain on the outside of your lower leg and ankle.
If you are stretching and your symptoms are worsening, the stretch is probably too aggressive. Please stop, and seek an appointment with your physiotherapist. They will assess you, give their opinion on your diagnosis and teach the correct neurodynamic exercises for your condition.
