Tiptoe Through the Tulips - Tiny Tim
Tiny Tim, whose real name was Herbert Butros Khaury, recorded & released ‘Tiptoe Through the Tulips’ on the album ‘God Bless Tiny Tim’ smack in the middle of culturally tumultuous 1968. The song was originally written in 1929 for the musical ‘Gold Diggers of Broadway’. He is known primarily for this hit novelty song which showcased his crazy falsetto, along with his truly eccentric stage presence, introduced to most of the world through performances on television’s Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In (see comments for a clip!). The show was already damaging enough to my young impressionable psyche; then Tiny Tim’s appearances sealed the deal. Once seen and heard, the experience cannot be undone. If you know, you know. Even so, I loved it. It’s possible this is where I developed a kind-of ‘elitist outsider art appreciator’s snob tool’, which is essentially: if a thing annoys most of the world, then embrace it, defend it, and use it a cultural cudgel forthwith. If you know, you know. If you don’t know, then I’m afraid you must remain on the other side of the velvet rope. For such a relatively narrow range, Tiny Tim had an amazing successful run, particularly in the late 60’s early 70’s, releasing over a dozen albums. He was a fellow ethnomusicologist, mining and bringing forth many a forgotten vintage song in his recordings and performances. Nothing can really top this song, however his cover of ‘I Got You Babe’ by Sonny & Cher comes close, as he alternates between his falsetto and baritone in a paint-peeling sort of way (see comments!). Of the many brushes with fame this earthling has had, right near the top is finding Tiny Tim at Club Kamikaze in the 80’s after an art opening of dear pal Jerald Frampton. Paula Kelly took a couple of fine snaps of us behind our hero, flanked by two women he asserted were ‘A couple of New York City’s top models’. It’s a glorious life! #tinytim Tiny Tim
