It's your birthday, and the house is cold. There are no balloons. No cake. Nothing.

Well, there's one thing: your husband won't look you in the eyes.

“I’ll get to the point," he says. "I’ve fallen in love with Petra, and I’m moving in with her. Tonight.”

Ice water flushes through your veins. Your reality spins so wildly, so incomprehensibly, that you feel nauseous. “Your boss?”

“She’s not my boss,” he says. “I’m consulting for her.”

You press a hand to your heart as if you can calm the rapid beating. What’s happening right now? “Are you telling me you’re leaving your wife of twenty-seven years for a woman you’ve known three months?”

“Yes.” Oddly, he doesn’t seem embarrassed or ashamed. It’s more like he’s dreading an outburst from you. “I know you’re angry, and I don’t blame you. But I’m finally happy.”

None of his words land. You can see shards of truth but none of the pieces fit together. “What have you done?” You don’t want to be vulnerable right now—it’s your darn birthday—but you need answers. “You don’t love me anymore?”

“Sure, I do. Of course. We’ve been together nearly thirty years. We’ve raised kids. But at this point, we’re nothing more than friends. You know that. With Petra, it’s different. I feel alive for the first time—”

“In seven years," you say. "Yes, I know. I know, because I’ve had a front-row seat to your despair and anger, and your complete unwillingness to reinvent your life.”

“That’s right.” He spits out the words, his ugly side rearing. “I’ve hated my life. But now, I have a chance to get out of this mess, and I’m taking it.”

“And what about me?” you ask. “We’ve lost everything. We have no money in our savings account, and you’re going to leave me?”

You wait for regret to wrench his features. For doubt, hesitation…any normal human reaction. But he remains steadfast. Panic gets a grip on your nervous system and squeezes. “You don’t abandon your family like this. I’m your wife.”

Let this be a cruel joke. Let him crack a smile and point a finger at her. “Gotcha.” Let this be anything but your husband abandoning you when you have nothing but a garden apartment that eats up nearly half your salary.

“Look, this is lousy, and I know it. But I found an exit ramp, and I have to take it.” When he finally looks at you, he says, “And I hope you find one, too.”

You open your mouth to let him know he’s a heartless, careless jerk, to explain what life’s been like for you working nonstop just to keep a roof over your heads, all while watching him seethe with bitterness every day, staring at the television instead of taking a job he thinks is beneath him.

But what’s the point? He’s crossed a line, and there’s no coming back from it. And so, you wipe your face clean of emotion. “Okay.”

“I’m sorry, Margot. I am.” For a split second, remorse flashes in his eyes, but it fades like a spark hitting the lake. “I’ll just ask one favor. Stay away from the apartment on Saturday, so Petra and I can get the rest of my stuff.”

On Wednesday, you work your last shift. On Thursday, you pack your car. And on Friday, you block his number and walk out the door.

Destination unknown.

Do you want to see Margot get her second chance at love? You're going to love Beau!
