“Amelia, sweetheart,” your dad calls, following you out of the club.

“I don’t have anything to say to you right now.” Not after he broke his promise yet again. And then, when you came up with your own solution, he totally slammed it.

“I love you, and I want the best for you,” he says. “And I’m telling you right now doing a television cooking competition is a mistake. I’m not trying to upset you. I’m trying to save you.”

“Okay, but you are upsetting me. I have to do the show, Dad. I have nothing else, and if I don’t do it, what then? What other options do I have?”

“We’ll come up with something. There are always options.” He gives you that determined look of his. The one he gets when he tries to bend you to his will. “The kind that won’t make you look like a fool.”

Hurt pulses with every beat of your heart. “I’ve been cooking for Blue Fire for four months.” And the band members actually appreciate you. They like your food. “I grew up in kitchens. I’m not going to choke.”

You’re totally going to choke. You don’t know the first thing about culinary arts. But really, screw him.

“You’ve been making sub sandwiches and spaghetti and meatballs.” He grows serious. “You’ll be the laughingstock of the show.”

You take a step closer to him. “You’re my father. And even if you’re worried about me, you should still support me. Do you realize you haven’t even said the one word I needed to hear?”

“What word, my angel?” he asks.

“How about congratulations?”

Just as your finger hovers over the cab company’s number, a motorcycle roars down the street. With his long, dark hair fluttering out the half-shell helmet, the unmistakable figure of Calix Bourbon comes cruising down the asphalt in a black and chrome Harley.

“I can’t say it.” Your dad shoves his hands into his pockets. “I can’t tell you what you want to hear when I know the truth. And you know why? Because I love you. With all my heart, I love you, and I want the best for you.”

“I’m doing this show,” you say. “And I’m going to win.”

“You’re a well-educated businesswoman," he says. "Not some hysterical, overly made-up reality TV fool.”

“So, I’m way better than the Verna Bloom Show, huh? But not good enough to work with you?” you demand. “Cool, but where does that leave me?” You step into the intersection, forcing the bike to stop.

“Amelia.” The concern in your dad’s tone almost makes you turn back to him.

Calix’s big boot hits the ground. He watches you with those intense, dark eyes.

“Can you give me a ride?” you ask him.

The keyboard player’s heated gaze takes a slow slide from your eyes to your mouth, all the way down to your hips.

“Melie.” The two syllables fire like pellets out of your dad’s mouth. “What do you think you’re doing?”

But you ignore him and approach the bike. You’ve never ridden on a motorcycle. How can you straddle it in a pencil skirt?

Without a word, Calix pulls a combat foldout blade from the pocket of his jeans and flips it open. The loud flick excites you. Leaning in, he looks up, a question in his eyes. Heart pounding, you nod.
He pulls the skirt away from your legs.

“Hey.” Your dad charges into the street. “Do not touch her.”

But Calix doesn’t even look at him. He keeps his inquiring gaze on you.

You give him a nod. In one swift flick of his wrist, Calix slits your skirt nearly up to your lacy boy shorts.

“Are you out of your mind?” your dad shouts.

Instead of answering—and really, maybe you are a little out of her mind—you hitch up the material and throw a leg over the seat. With your hot pink panties exposed for all the world to see, you lean forward, closing the distance between you and Calix’s big body.

“Amelia, I don’t know what you’re doing but acting like a rebellious teenager is not going to encourage me to hire you.”

“So far nothing I’ve done has encouraged you,” you throw out.

Calix pulls off his helmet and hands it to you. Once you have it on, you wrap your arms around his hard, warm waist. A thrill runs through you.

“I told you I’d come up with an idea for you,” your dad says. “But if you get on that bike, I won’t help you with anything.”

“Then I guess it’s up to me to take it from here.”

Calix’s big hand settles on your thigh, giving it a squeeze.

You understand the question. “Go.”

With a roar, the engine takes off.
You don’t bother looking back.
