I was planning to tell my husband Conrad that I’m expecting on my birthday.
Conrad promised me a surprise, and I’m guessing it’s the painting he’s hidden in the study. I stumbled upon it by accident. The painting is of my silhouette, and it’s beautifully done; he must have spent months on it. Given the effort he put into it, I’ve decided to pretend I didn’t see it and wait for him to give it to me himself.
I was going upstairs to take my pregnancy report. But when I opened the bedroom door, there was a woman on my bed.
It was my widowed sister-in-law, Susanna. She was wearing a revealing silk nightgown, casually spreading my jewelry and clothes across the bed, with my report in her hand.
“What are you doing here?” I asked. “Why are you messing with my stuff?”
“Oh, it’s you,” she gave me a dirty look. “Don’t talk to me like that. This is my room now.”
It’s ridiculous. I could feel my anger rising."This is mine and my husband’s room, how could it become yours?!"
She smiled and said, "I wanted it, so Conrad gave it to me."
Conrad just wanted to take care of his brother’s wife, that’s what he told me. We’ve been taking care of her really carefully in this difficult time. I didn’t expect her to be grateful, but she’s gone too far. She’s always asking for more; my time, my jewelry, I’ve given her all that. And now, my bedroom?
Before I replied, Conrad appeared in the doorway, his expression full of happiness as he looked at Susanna. “You’re. This is a gift for you.” he exclaimed, stepping into the room.
I stood to the side, frozen. Shock flooded my system as I watched him pull out the painting and roses from behind his back. There was also a cute little card on the roses. I couldn’t make out the message clearly, but I knew it said, "My eternal love, my forever beauty."
It felt like I was watching a scene unfold from a play that I had no role in. Conrad knelt before Susanna, “You're my one and only.”
Susanna hugged him and smiled, saying, "Thank you so much! I have some good news to tell you, I'm expecting!"
It wasn’t until I fell to the ground that my husband noticed I was here.
I'm just my sister-in-law's substitute.
