Title

Continuing Conversations / Remnants combined opening reception

Link Description

AAWR invites you to join us for an evening of dual opening receptions on Thursday, January 30 from 5:30 pm - 8 pm.

Remnants, is the inaugural Exhibition for Archived Artist and Master printmaker, Karen D. Beckwith. Remnants, will take a retrospective look at her work over the years. Ten works from the Archives collection combined with more recent work will be on display. Beckwith is a contemporary artist and printmaker that utilizes her talent to uncover and define visual depths within everyday scenes. A self-identified truth-seeker, she uses her formidable technical mastery to uncover the deeper, often overlooked stories of everyday existence, by exploring spaces within urban and rural settings that manifest hints, remnants, of inhabitants without revealing their identities.

Continuing Conversations: From Woodblock to Inkjet,
an exhibition of works by regional printmakers, including Print Club of Cleveland members Jennifer Leach, Bellamy Printz, and Paula Zinsmeister, will open at the Artists Archives of the Western Reserve on January 30 with a reception from 5:30 – 8:00pm, and run through March 22. Curated by Baldwin Wallace University’s Paul Jacklitch, Professor of Art, and Darlene G. Michitsch, Associate Professor of Art History, in conjunction with AAWR Executive Director Mindy Tousley, the show includes regional printmakers whose work both addresses foundational media (relief, intaglio, planar) and inventively expands on them, using techniques ranging from hand-coloring, stenciling, and found objects to laser-cut, digital, and more.
A Featured part of “Continuing Conversations” is “A Conversation Across Time” portfolio of prints from the AAWR collection. This portfolio documents a project led by Professor Maggie Denk Leigh, Associate Professor and the Printmaking Department Chair at the Cleveland Institute of Art, and supported by past AAWR Registrar Kelly Pontoni, completed between Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA) students and AAWR during covid. CIA students used the work of Kestutis Kizevicius (Kesty) from the AAWR collection for response prints made in addition to restrikes of Kesty’s work. Each participant, as well as CIA and AAWR received a complete portfolio of prints, and a small exhibition for the project was held originally at CIA. AAWR is incredibly pleased to be re-exhibiting this work as part of Continuing Conversations, which reemphasizes the importance of our local universities and colleges that continue to educate and invigorate our culture through the arts.
