What better way to celebrate the New Year than with the utter joy of Fayard & Harold - the fabulous Nicholas Brothers - in their legendary stair-leaping from 1943's 'Stormy Weather'.

Astaire may have had grace. Kelly had athleticism. But Fayard & Harold had both. In bucketloads.

Fayard, the eldest, remembered watching & learning as his parents played in bands:

"I'd listen to Louis Armstrong play the horn & Adelaide Hall sing songs and watch Buck & Bubbles dance and many, many more. And just by watching I taught myself how to perform, and then I taught my brother."

No soft-shoe shuffle for Fayard & Harold. They virtually invented the flashdance and it wasn't long before 'The Nicholas Brothers' were wowing crowds at the Cotton Club - Harold was just 9 when they first appeared there - and in the Ziegfried Follies.

They would dance with everyone from Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson to Gene Kelly - Astaire once told them their Jumpin' Jive was the best musical sequence ever. Even the great choreographer, George Balanchine, would hire them.

Hollywood came calling too and they would appear in dozens of films. The brothers' breakthrough was a significant one, as Harold noted:

"Oh sure, you'd see blacks playing Stepin Fetchit and maids, but you didn't see many blacks really doing what we did. Somehow, it turned out that we were becoming stars - and man did we love it.''

But there was a catch. Even in movies with Bing Crosby, Betty Grable and other white stars, they were always only non-speaking guests (easily cut for Southern audiences) until Gene Kelly broke the colour bar with them in 1948.

Fayard would note, "My brother and I used our whole bodies, our hands, our personalities and everything."

And Harold would say of his brother, "He was like a poet . . . Talking to you with his hands and feet."

Throwing all they had at the floor - and creating poetry. Amen to that. And have a great 2025!
