I don’t know about you, but when I was a child, we called the gifts under our tree, “presents.” In fact, many of us still do. Same with birthdays and anniversaries. They were/are “Birthday and Anniversary presents.” This got me to thinking, “Where did that term originate?” Well…not surprisingly, the word “present” comes from the French, meaning: “to present.” So, a present is a thing being presented or bestowed. Beginning sometime in the 13th century and continuing into our present (pun intended), the word, “present” has been used for the idea of something undergoing a transfer of possession without expectation of payment. Now, if you would’ve asked me the difference between a present and a gift when I was 8 or 9 years old, I probably would’ve explained that “presents” are wrapped and “gifts” are not. In other words, once you unwrap your presents, they instantly become gifts. While that definition is unquestionably incorrect, I kind of like the idea behind it. Think of it like this: When God gave us the gift of His son, so many years ago, He wrapped him in prophecy, mystery, and promise. He presented Jesus to us without expectation of payment. However, until we believe in (trust in, cling to, and rely upon) Him, He remains wrapped – a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to everyone else. But as soon as we unwrap Him (believe in Him) He becomes the greatest gift anyone could ever receive. He becomes the source of our hope, our peace, our joy, and our love. So, as you set about shopping, making, and wrapping presents this Christmas season; anticipate the joy and pleasure of the one who gets to rip the wrapping paper off. Imagine the present becoming a gift and remember Jesus. Remember the moment He…became yours!
