Ellsworth’s “La Combe I” (1950) was conceived during his time at Villa La Combe in France, where the artist found profound inspiration in the interplay of light and shadow.

A modest flight of stairs became the genesis of this nine-panel composition and the broader “La Combe” series. Ellsworth was captivated by the ever-shifting shadows cast across the steps, meticulously documenting their transformations through photography and sketches at various times of day. As the artist once said, “I’m not interested in the texture of a rock, but in its shadow.”

This seminal work is currently on view at @m7_Qater as part of the exhibition Ellsworth Kelly at 100, running through February 2025. Following the exhibition, La Combe I will return to its permanent home at the @whitneymuseum.
