Title | The Evergreen Boats: Monmouth County's Forgotten Christmas Greens Trade |
Link Description | Discover Monmouth County's forgotten role in the American Christmas! From the end of the Civil War to the 1930s, churches, homes, and department stores went all in for lavish displays of evergreens -- and Monmouth County’s farming and fishing families supplied them. For weeks before Christmas, locals harvested greens from the woods and hand-crafted them into roping, swags and wreaths. Schooners and steamboats, loaded to the rails with evergreens, plied back and forth between Monmouth ports and New York’s markets. Public historian and museum consultant Michelle Moon will share stories, images, and surprising details from this forgotten industry. This program will take place at the Long Branch Arts & Cultural Center. Questions? Contact Lisa Kelly at lkelly@longbranchlib.org. REGISTER HERE: |
