Classic Review
Monstrosity
“Millennium”

Origin: Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA 🇺🇸

Genre: Technical Death Metal

Label: Conquest Music

Contemporary tech lacks a little something called dignity. True death metal fans are hardly impressed with perpetual guitar doodles, 1000 beats-per-second blasts and obnoxious snare tones. Give it a break, fellas… Are you writing music for fans of the genre or to impress other musicians? Bands like Archspire, for instance, just don’t get it right. Their music is just as abominable and obnoxious as one of those Tesla trucks that look like something out of RoboCop. Tech era Death and early Monstrosity - technical death metal that’s actually worthy of being labeled DM, as opposed to whatever this new shit is. Call me a Boomer or whatever else you silly kids are calling old heads these days, but when I think tech, I think Nile, Gorguts, Death and Monstrosity. And when it comes to the latter, there is no finer example of proper technical death metal than their sophomore LP, “Millennium”, released via Conquest.

Where the fuck did these dudes come from? Isn’t Floridian DM supposed to be all gory and Satanic? All fast and brutal? Monstrosity came out of left field and helped to redefine the genre of death metal as we knew it. Their music was every bit as savage as traditional DM, but souped up just a bit with a wider spectrum of dynamic range and accented with more elaborate riffing techniques, but just enough to give it a sound that would complement deeper-seated lyrical subject matter. A little something to strike up images of cosmological excursions, futuristic warfare or the inner workings of the human conscious. With “Millennium”, Monstrosity and George Fisher elevated death metal to heights anew: unpredictable changes in tempo, advanced recording techniques and seemingly off-rhythm percussion that scrambled the senses as opposed to inspiring one to just bang his head. But there’s still that savage Florida death metal vibe, and that’s what is most important here. It’s recognizable as true death metal! And with deeply philosophical tracks like “Devious Instinct” and “Mirrors of Reason”, it’s also intelligent and contemplative.

Tech with integrity… There’s so much wrong with modern extreme metal, and a lot of it just has to do with poor taste. The same people who listen to some of this garbage are the same people who pay money to watch wrestling or the new Transformers movie. Like Michael Bay as opposed to Ridley Scott. Like Cattle Decapitation as opposed to Massacre. People want to be entertained rather than be enthralled, and it’s a shame. “Millenium” has aged fairly well, and I say fairly, because today’s tech enthusiasts would rather listen to The Zenith Passage…

If you haven’t put two and two together yet, I’m not a technical death metal fan. I hate it as much as I hate symphonic black metal. Give me “Millenium” and I’ll die on this hill… Monstrosity are still at it and just as fucking good as they’ve ever been. They’re due for a new album, but their latest LP, “The Passage of Existence”, is one of their top three releases. Why? Because kids didn’t record it… Kids who treat death metal like an eight year old who slaps a bunch of stickers all over his dad’s classic Stingray, because it looks neat… Chuck Schuldiner even got out of control before he passed. What the fuck is “The Sound of Perseverance” anyway? Great album, just not a death metal album. The gates need to be kept with a little more vigilance if you ask me. “Millenium” - a dignified technical death metal album for dignified death metal people.

10/10
