Body | Welcome inside the stunning Washburn University's, Ross House! Before I get into all the incredible details I want to point out a couple people and the incredible heart and soul they put into this house. Daniel Carlson, our general contractor, said yes to every single design concept we came up with. This made his job a thousand times more difficult, but he was just as committed to the standard we wanted to deliver on this home. I'm so grateful for his vision for this home, because it's a huge lift to be the one who actually has to make all these things work and hold up for a hundred years. Truly, grateful is an understatement for how thankful I am for him. He's also my brother, so that makes it pretty fun too. Kelly Ballard was the lead designer on this home and she just shined on this project! The unique, and often challenging role, of a designer is the ability to go back and forth from a creative/dreaming role to a detailed/execution role and this girl killed it! The level of details she created and executed would have done anyone else in, but she thrived and her vision was inspiring! What a gift she has! I'm so grateful to create this home alongside her and see her talents come to life. Today, I'm sharing the dining room and it's one of my favorite spaces she designed, well, just wait for the kitchen, I'm pretty obsessed with that too! Brett Thiessen is our estimator and manager of it all. There are a lot of moving parts with scope and design change over the six months we spent in the architectural and design phase and the twelve months of building and to know and manage all the financial happenings over a long horizon is truly a gift. Thankful for all he did behind the scenes to make this home a reality. Now, onto the pretty details! The first thing you'll notice is the gorgeous mahogany double arched door. While we were in the architectural phase of designing this home we conducted a lot of research of original buildings on Washburn's campus and a consistent theme where arched entrances. Immediately, we knew we wanted to nod to the past by selecting an arched double front door. Another key design element in older homes is intricate exterior trim details. It was important for us to incorporate this into the home, but because this isn't often done anymore (especially around here!) it proved much harder than we initially expected. We ended up having each one of these dentil moldings hand made for the front of the house! What a team effort from Sarah Grafke and her 3D renderings to figure out the exact sizing and spacing to the actual fabrication and installation of these pieces. This is the beauty of how technology and craftsmen work together in 2024! I'm just thrilled with how it turned out and all the incredible trim work on the exterior is one of my favorite elements of this home...the other is all this gorgeous Kansas Limestone! We worked on a custom blend of stone and I love the stone details we added with the window lentils and stone boarder across the house. The gas lanterns on the front and copper gutters just finish off the exterior perfectly! This custom Washburn tile in the vestibule provides so much character right when you walk in with gorgeous gold light fixtures that charmingly remind me of Kansas wheat. Turning the corner the dining room draws you right in with the dark navy walls, deep mahogany furniture and tons of gorgeous millwork! To keep a grand look in this room we concealed a track system into the ceiling to hang the curtains. I love how stately and refined it feels! It's the perfect room for all the hosting Washburn University does and it makes quite the first impression! General Contractor | Daniel Carlson |
