Body | UTTERLY FREE: A FULL CHURCH IN SILICON VALLEY [Plus Giveaway of 100k Naira, read till the end!] Yesterday, an evangelical Christian colleague in the hospital asked me why Catholic patients often request Communion and what the Eucharist means for us Catholics. I shared a few words about the Eucharist—the intensity of God’s real presence—and the priest’s role in confecting the sacrament on behalf of all gathered, to nourish our souls and spiritual life. Later, during a break, a different non-Christian colleague approached me. Her steps were tentative, but her gaze was steady. “Fortunatus,” she began, “This might sound ridiculous, but… I really want to receive Communion—if it’s what you say it is. But if it really is what you say, why do I need to… have to… eat it?” Moved by the sincerity of her question, I responded gently, softly singing a line from a familiar communion hymn we sing in Nigeria, quoting Jesus’ words in John 6:53-54: “If you do not eat my flesh… if you do not drink my blood… if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of Man, you will have no life in you…” Another colleague joined in, adding more insights, and before we knew it, our lunch break was over. Later, as I left the hospital, carrying the weight of the day’s interventions and encounters, I stopped by a Catholic church for evening Mass. This church, in the heart of Silicon Valley, was filled with people quietly praying in anticipation of Mass. As I knelt before Mass, I lowered my head and let myself sink into my feelings. There was so much heaviness I couldn’t process. Due to the confidential nature of my work, I can’t name specifics, so I’ll stop here. But I’d love to share that, by the end of Mass, I felt utterly free, relieved of all the heaviness I had come with. I felt grateful—truly grateful—for the gift of Christ in the Eucharist. Sometimes, I feel a deep sympathy for Catholics who don’t know what the Eucharist truly is. I’d like to invite anyone who feels moved to share how the Eucharist has impacted their life. What advice would you give young people to approach and appreciate the Mass as less boring? A write-up or video will be great. 100k naira. Let’s go! |
