Body | "You're my mate now, and as my Luna, you're supposed to help me."
She was seething with anger again, "You can't make me do anything against my will. I don't want to be your mate, and I don't want to carry your pups. And I won't."
He stormed over to her and pulled her off of the couch, holding her weight so that she wouldn't be standing on her injured leg. She struggled, wide eyed, trying to get away.
She watched his canines extend and she screamed. "Get off of me! Stop!"
He ignored her pleas and scraped her neck with his sharp teeth, sending shivers throughout her body. She shut her eyes tightly. "Are you going to comply willingly, little one?"
"Screw you."
********
"You will now be released into the forest. There are three alphas and seven other males waiting. There are resting spots that are open for a week. You will get a three minute head start to run if you wish. You are not to kill or severely injure any of your pursuers. Once you are caught and marked, you've been mated and therefore the property of the one who caught you."
Lorena felt her blood boil. She wasn't going to be any man's property.
"You have thirty seconds to prepare." A timer appeared on the wall and Lorena's heart raced so fast she felt sick. Vera grabbed her arm and forced her to look at her.
"Hold it together. If we stick together then it will be harder for them to catch us. We're strong fighters."
Lorena shook her head. "It won't work! We're going to be caught anyways! They have a whole week to catch us. It's inevitable!"
"Lorena, please. You're strong. I've seen you fight back home. That quiet, humble, shy girl act you put on back with our old pack isn't going to help us now. I know you can act feral. I need that side of you to come out right now. We can do this together."
Her wide eyes flicked up to where the timer was counting down from ten seconds. She shut her eyes and took a deep breath. She had to get through this. She had to see her Papa again. And maybe she could fix things with her mom.
"Okay, let's do this."
"Good. Let's go."
The door started to open and Vera grabbed Lorena's shaking hand. They bolted as soon as the door was up, running side by side, but having no idea where they were going. Lorena had never been on a hunt or even went on a run in the forest before, but her natural instincts kicked in and she found herself quickly surveying the landscape. Her surroundings were nothing but a blur of evergreen green and the dark brown of the tree trunks they were running past. Once they'd ran for what felt like five minutes, they stopped to catch their breath. It was risky, seeing as those three alphas were most likely already on Vera's scent trail, but if they didn't rest at least a little they wouldn't be able to carry on at all.
Vera looked around in awe of the tall trees and sighed. "It's beautiful."
Lorena nodded. "It really is," she admitted. As bad as the situation was, there was no doubt that their surroundings were quite breathtaking. Above them was the darkening sky, and that's when she reminded herself that they were quickly losing daylight and needed a place to hide. "We need somewhere to rest tonight."
Vera nodded. "Yes, but the forest is so big and we don't know where to start."
The brunette she-wolf huffed. It was a smart move on the elder's part. Bringing unmated females from the pack on the very outskirts of the kingdom who had little to no training in the actual wild would mean that their pursuers have an even better chance at catching them sooner. By time the girls had run around a bit and exhausted themselves, they would come looking for a male or an alpha who knew these parts for help. They had to think like an alpha and that meant thinking ahead of everyone.
~~
Alpha Orion was in line for the throne, but first, he needed a mate. He had busied himself with human females, just for a good time, but never really thought about finding a mate or having heirsβ a luxury only he could afford at the time. Now, things have changed. His father was on his deathbed and he was an only child. He was extremely desperate to find someone and he needed to find her now.
There weren't many females to choose from, since his pack was more prone to having males than females. Pack numbers were dwindling. After having no luck finding a mate, a lot of their men left and attempted to adapt to the human society, blending in there.
That's why he was grateful when the elders agreed to help him and a few others from his pack find mates under an extinction clause. This was no time for games. He needed a mate and heirs as soon as possible, and he would do almost anything to make it happen.
That's why he was here with nine other hungry men, watching over the forest, waiting for the females to be released. The rules were simple: don't kill on purpose and whichever one caught your eye and you got to mark was yours. His strategy was to at least catch one that took their allotted three minute head start as an advantage and ran. That would show that there was at least a little bit of fight in her, and it would most likely make her a good Luna and queen.
When the females were released, he watched intently as a blond and a brunette took off as quickly as possible side by side, and he could tell they were working together to avoid being mated. He saw that as a small challenge, and he also saw that the brunette was the naturally faster one and had instinct. Maybe he would go for that one.
He could tell that the two other alphas picked up the blond's scent as easily as he did, and they were practically salivating at the thought of having her. He didn't think it was worth the trouble of fighting two other alphas, and that wasn't the one his wolf was urging him to pursue anyways. He did feel bad for the blond girl, though. Having two alpha males on your trail trying to make you their mate was extremely dangerous, and potentially deadly.
After three minutes, he shifted quickly, his bones cracking and making sickening snapping sounds. He had gotten used to the pain that came with shifting, but would never get used to the disgusting sounds that came with it.
He sprinted after the girls, knowing that if one of the alphas happened to concede and let the other alpha have the blond girl, then they would turn to his brunette, the one he wanted, and he couldn't let that happen.
The other males weren't much competition so he pretended as if it were just the three alphas and ten girls in the forest. He caught onto the little blond's scent almost immediately. He noticed that she was most likely presenting, since her smell varied a bit and sometimes was strong and sometimes not. Naturally, his wolf reacted to the scent, but even his wolf didn't want her, no matter how fertile she was and how good she smelled. He needed to focus.
He knew that the two of them working together meant that it would be harder to find them. They had already started making false tracks and he'd have to go into a clearing and trace the scent all over again. It was exhausting and quite annoying, but he respected their intelligence in this arena, which he knew for a fact they weren't acquainted with. It also meant that his future queen would be smart and strategic, which was a plus.
Eventually he found the common denominator: the scent trails always ended in the outskirts of the clearing, but they always got stronger and trailed inwards towards a large tree in the middle. He allowed himself a wolfy grin, quite proud of himself for figuring out their strategy so quickly. He quickly ran over to the tree and looked up, hoping to see the girls sitting on the branches in the tree. It was quite hard to see into the cone-shaped tree, but he caught a flash of their white and olive green clothing and he knew they were up there.
He heard their slight whimpers and their heavy breathing. He would've just climbed up the tree and taken his mate, but his wolf was way too big and he wanted to give her a chance to come willingly. He shifted again, knowing that if he tried to bark up the tree he would alert the other wolves and the girls weren't from his pack, so they wouldn't understand him anyways.
He looked up into the tree and started to speak. "Hello, girls. I'm Alpha Orion Gunner from the Gunner pack. I've found you, so you can come out now. I'm not going to hurt you." He waited a few moments and was met with complete silence.
"Girls-? Ouch." He looked down at the pebble that had just hit him in the forehead. He growled and looked back up into the tree, seeing the brunette staring back at him, barely visible past the leaves.
"Buzz off, okay? None of us want this. Just go away."
Alpha Orion just stared at her. To most she would seem plain, but she was stunning. The sun was still setting and even from below, he could see how they sparkled in the last remaining rays of sun. She had the most perfect, round little nose and long eyelashes that fanned out against her cheeks every time she blinked. It looked as if she had tied her hair in a knot to keep it out of her face since she didn't have a ponytail holder at her dispense. He almost wanted to laugh at how cute she looked in that moment, but looks were deceiving, and so far, all she's shown him was how cunning and slick she was. He had to be careful with this one.
"Aren't you tired of running? Come down, little ones, and I can show you a place to rest your heads properly." He looked up at the two of them in the tree hopefully. The brunette seriously looked like she was contemplating it. He finally thought she was gonna give in, but then a bigger rock was thrown at him.
"Yeah, so when I wake up you can be buried balls deep inside of me against my will, forcing me to carry your pups. I think not!"
Luckily he caught the rock before it hit him right above his eye, but despite his kind and patient disposition, this wasn't something he could be laid back about. If he didn't grab her and mark her soon, she could belong to someone else, and that couldn't happen. He had eyes on her first.
He dropped the rock and cleared his throat rather loudly. "I'm giving you a chance to come on your own, but if you won't play nice, then I guess I'll just have to come up there myself."
She rolled her eyes and her face disappeared behind some pine needles. "I guess you will, then."
He nodded to himself and surveyed the tree, trying to find a way he could squeeze between the tight branches without getting his fur stuck. He shifted and started to dig his large claws into the thick tree bark, pulling himself up. The girls shifted in the tree and tried to move away.
This time, the blond girl threw a rock with all of her strength, and it hit him in the head. His wolf yelped and then growled, wanting to get this over with. He wanted to claim that stunning doe-eyed girl as soon as possible and he could smell the other alphas getting closer. The least he needed to do was scent her and then nobody could dare challenge him for her.
He retracted his claws from the tree and huffed, running in a circle around the tree and rubbing his face against the bark. At least maybe this would deter the other alphas a little bit and make them wary of coming too close.
He sat down and the two alphas trotted up to the tree, sniffing the air. They knew their prize was hidden up in the tree and planned to rip the other alpha apart to get it.
Lorena watched carefully as the alpha crawled back down the tree. Vera gasped. "He's giving up."
Lorena knew otherwise. "Alphas never give up, not that easily and not with a female involved." She was proven correct as the alpha scent-marked the tree and sat down, waiting patiently when two other alphas showed up. At first they were extremely slow to approach Alpha Orion, but when he didn't move and he showed almost no threat, they lunged at him.
Lorena cringed as she watched them attack. As much as she wanted the alphas to leave her alone, she didn't want to watch Orion die or get seriously hurt. It was clear that he knew how to fight, though. He was holding his own for the most part, and the other two alphas weren't any match for him, but he was getting tired and the alphas were starting to draw blood and it was becoming hard to watch.
She looked at Vera who was watching with wide, tearful eyes. She'd never seen such violence over something as trivial as a female's attention. "We have to do something ... they'll kill him."
Lorena didn't want to help. She knew that the second she got out of that tree she was going to have an alpha or two and she wouldn't know what to do or where to go. No good deed goes unpunished.
She turned to Vera. "I need you to hug me."
"Is now really the time?"
"Trust me. Those alphas are after you. Your scent is so strong, and if they smell it on me, they'll leave him alone and chase me instead."
Vera shook her head. "No, then you're in danger." She grabbed a rock from the little makeshift pocket she had made in her shirt and hurled it at one of the alphas, making him stop dead in his movements. He looked right at Vera and growled. Vera shrank back and shut her eyes in fear.
Lorena couldn't blame her. He was terrifyingly huge. Alpha Orion was bigger, but his wolf wasn't as aggressive. This wolf was the second biggest of all three, with a dark gray coat and huge black paws, and was trying to climb the tree, taking his attention off of the two other alphas who were still going at it.
This gave Alpha Orion the break he needed and he was able to take on the smallest alpha easily. The other one put up a fight, but Orion held out longer and the other wolf left, probably deciding that either of us weren't worth the trouble anymore.
Unfortunately, this gave both of the remaining alphas an opportunity to start clawing at the tree, trying to get to their prize inside.
Alpha Orion was starting to make progress, and he was halfway up the tree. Lorena realized that he was actually after her and not Vera and she started to panic. She didn't want an alpha. They were too strong-willed and dominant and demanding. She would much rather have an omega such as herself who would make her bear his pups and leave her alone afterwards, rather than an alpha who would no doubt impregnate her over and over again and force her to bend to his will.
She looked over at Vera who was shaking and weakly throwing rocks at her pursuer, which was no longer affecting him. "We have to shift and get out of here."
She shook her head frantically. "No! Our scent will be that much stronger and I'll be a dead giveaway! We have to split up, Lorena. You'll be caught for sure if we stick too close."
"No, I can't leave you! You'll be hurt!"
Vera nodded her head, looking down at the relentless alpha that was close enough to drag her down. "He's going to catch me anyways. Once he does, then what's the worst that can happen?"
Lorena looked at her like she had grown a second head. "He'll-!"
"I know what he might do, Lorena. But then he might not. My father always told me to accept the things that we cannot change. There's nothing we can do. The longer we fight it, the more painful this entire process will be. It's time to give in, Lorena. Please."
Vera was crying at the thought of what might happen the second she came down from that tree, but she knew she had to do it anyways. She was just making the situation that much more dangerous by being near Lorena, and she wanted to give her a chance.
Before Lorena could respond, the branches started creaking and the woods seemed to be filled with an extremely pregnant silence. The two girls looked at each other and the two alphas below before plummeting to the ground, their limbs flying out and trying to catch themselves, but failing to do so.
When Lorena made sense of what was happening, she realized that she had landed on top of Orion and her eyes widened. She looked over at Vera, who's alpha was standing over her, letting her know that it would be easier to submit than run because he had already won.
Lorena felt tears prick at her eyes at the sight, but Vera just looked at her. "Lorena, you need to run. Right now. I'll be okay! Stop crying!"
Lorena nodded and rolled off of the big black wolf, trying to regain her footing. The alpha was doing the same, standing up slowly and swaying a little bit, pulling his focus back in on her. Before he ever had the chance to lunge for her, she took off.
At this point, Alpha Orion was quite irritated. Actually, he was extremely irritated.
He was pissed that he'd been standing there under what could be a Christmas tree, fighting two other alphas over one girl. He was pissed that the other alphas wanted the blonde girl and assumed he did as well and attempted to rip him to shreds over her.
And lastly, he was pissed that he had to do all of this and more just to plant his seed in some female for some heirs and have to put up with said female for the rest of his life. He loved a challenge just as much or even more than the next person, but this omega female was just ridiculous. He wanted a mate that would be smart and athletically capable to produce strong pups, but she had far succeeded his expectations.
Werewolves could climb trees, but nine times out of ten, they preferred to stay on the ground. That's what made him stop for a moment to think if it was even worth it to chase down a female as crazy as she was, a female crazy enough to scale a tree to escape the inevitable fate of being bred by some wolf at some point.
He actually found himself hesitant to chase her down after she had fallen out of the tree and on top of him, the branch whacking him in the head so hard he saw stars. After watching her run away, though, his wolf practically lurched forward, forcing him to run after her. If it wasn't for instinct, he would just walk up to one of the other females in his human form and try to politely ask them to be his mate, and he was sure a few would accept.
He watched her strip off her clothes as quick as she could while running, nearly tripping over herself to get as far away from him as possible. He rolled his eyes and easily picked up his pace, closing in on her. To his surprise, her wolf was black just as his was, and if she was to get far enough away, it would be hard to spot her.
It was clear that she was getting tired from the way she was slightly zigzagging while she ran. He did feel a bit bad for her; he couldn't imagine how scared he would have to be to continuously run nonstop for almost ten minutes or more. It was clear that she was desperate to be left alone, but he was more desperate.
If he was going to be king, he needed a mate and heirs. Aside from that, that meant that he couldn't go off and busy himself with other females. A mate would be good for him, as much as he hated to admit it, and instead of using random women to get off, there would be a woman who would please him as part of her duty to her mate.
Long story short, he couldn't wait to sink his canines into that striking brunette and make her his once and for all. |
