Mercury Players Society is excited to announce its 2024-25 season opener! Australia’s Joanna Murray-Smith herds sacred cows into the wings in her wickedly satirical comedy, The Female of the Species , on stage at Duncan United Church Heritage Hall, November 21, 22, 23, 24, 28, 29, 30 and December 1, 2024 - 4 evening shows and 4 matinees.
All performances are on stage at Duncan United Church Hall, 246 Ingram St.
Showtimes: Thursday and Fridays at 7.30 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays at 2.30 p.m.

Meet Margot Mason, a celebrity feminist author suffering from writer's block. She cannot meet the deadlines for her next book, and there’s a cow parked outside the front door; but that’s only the beginning of Margot’s problems. Molly, a deranged former student of hers, arrives unexpectedly with a gun. Molly blames Margot for warping her mother's mind with her hit book The Cerebral Vagina . Molly has had herself sterilized to preserve her creativity, only to be told by Margot that she has no talent. Other visitors arrive unexpectedly: Margot’s daughter Tess, exhausted from her house full of children; Tess's sensitive but socially inept stockbroker husband (Bryan); a macho taxi driver (Frank) and Margot's gay publisher (Theo). Together they debate Margot’s failures as a mother, an author and a feminist. The fast-paced humour effectively conveys a more serious message about the dangers of extremism.

The play was loosely inspired by a real-life incident in 2000, when author Germaine Greer ( The Female Eunuch ) was held at gunpoint in her own home by a disturbed student. It premiered in Australia, and the London production ran in the West End in 2008.

Leslie Sanchez directs John Close, Sarah Knight, Layne Kriwoken, Jess Mattin, Brandon Newall and Kathy Yewell.

Warning: strong language and adult themes, but no more offensive than you’ll find on evening TV. Recommended for ages 16+.
