“KALEA!! YOU’RE GOING TO BE LATE!!” my mother shouted from downstairs. I groaned and brought my pillow over my face. I hated going to school, but sadly, my mother had no idea how much. Dad knew, though. Dad knew all too well how I was being treated at school. Being adopted made it easier for people to make fun of me and bully me. I was always told that my parents didn’t want me, so they gave me to a pathetic Omega who couldn’t have pups of their own. My parents told me that I was adopted when I turned 12, and I’ve been treated like a plague ever since then.
I always thought I was made fun of and bullied because kids were cruel, and teenagers were even more brutal. But finding out that I didn’t belong here made it all the easier for them to do it. Unfortunately, they followed the lead of the future Alpha – Josh Harding. He no longer goes to school with us because he graduated two years ago, but sadly, his younger sister, who is my age, still attends the same high school. She’s kept the tradition of bullying me alive while Josh prepares to take over the Alpha title. Unfortunately, he can’t until he finds his mate and the pack’s future, Luna.
“KALEA!!!” my mother screamed again. I removed the pillow from my face.
“OKAY!!! I’M COMING. JUST WAIT!!” I screamed back. Don’t get me wrong, I love my parents, regardless of whether they’re my biological parents or not. They raised me, loved me, put a roof over my head, clothes on my back, and food on the table. Was my life luxurious? Of course not. But my parents did the best that they could do under the circumstances. Dad was an Omega soldier for the pack and was highly regarded, but still, he was a lower-level Omega, so many high-level ones didn’t show him much respect. But Dad never let it get to him. Mom was a cook for the main packhouse, so eating was never an issue for us. She would either bring us leftovers, which Dad and I never minded, or made sure there was food in the fridge for us if she couldn’t come home and cook meals.
I forced myself to sit in bed because I hated that I had to go to school. The only thing that kept me going was that it was my last year. I was a senior, and we only had a week left of classes before we had to take our finals. Also, my eighteenth birthday was coming up the same day as graduation, and I was excited that I would finally meet my mate. Hopefully, he can look past the fact that I’m adopted and just love me for who I am. It's wishful thinking, but it’s all I have right now.
I go into the bathroom to do my daily routine and shower. Since I had washed my hair last night, I didn’t need to do it again, so I just quickly washed my body, exfoliated, and shaved my legs. Once I was done, I entered my room to find my dad sitting on my bed.
“AH! DAD!” I screamed and held the towel around my body tighter. “Can’t you knock!?” I exclaimed.
“I’m sorry, Two-Tone, I keep forgetting,” he innocently replied, standing to his feet. My dad towered over me, standing at 6’1. Hell, even my mother towered over me, standing at 5’10. I wasn’t even 5 feet. I couldn’t understand how I could be so small until I learned they weren’t my parents. That in and of itself made a lot of sense. It’s rare to be a werewolf and be as small as me, which was something else I was teased about.
“Ugh, enough with the nickname, Dad,” I grunted as I walked past him and into my walk-in closet.
“But it suits you,” he replies as I go through my clothes to find my outfit of the day.
“Dad, I get that my eyes are different colors, but that nickname is getting old,” I tell him as I pull out a pair of black cargo pants and a V-neck solid navy blue T-shirt.
“Sweetheart, your eyes make you unique. It’s rare for a werewolf to have eyes of two different colors. It was the thing that drew your mother to you when she found you that day. The moment she saw them, she knew she had to bring you home,” he tells me as he stands behind me as I sit at my vanity to brush my hair. He rests his chin on top of my head and then kisses the top of it. “I’ll never get tired of your beautiful eyes, Two-Tone,” he says with so much adoration in this tone. I couldn’t help but smile.
“Can you tell me again how I became your daughter,” I asked sweetly.
“Tonight, after I come back from patrol. I need to head out, and you need to hurry, eat breakfast, and go to school.”
“Ugh, fine.” I quickly finish getting ready, grab my bookbag, stuff all the homework due for the day into it, and head to the dining room, where Mom has bacon, eggs, and tortillas stacked on the island. “Morning, Mommy!” I squeal and kiss her cheek while grabbing a piece of bacon from the grill. “Oh, hot! Hot! Hot!” I said as I played hot potato with it in my hands and teeth.
“Well, serves you right! You could have grabbed one off the plate that isn’t scorching hot,” she scolds as she puts a few more tortillas out.
“I like it when it burns, though. Let's me know that it’s nice and fresh!” I said with a smile and made two tacos for the road.
“Eat at the table, Kalea!”
“Sorry, Mom, but I’ll be late if I don’t leave now!” I said as I rushed out the front door and onto my bike.
“Kalea!” she shouted from the front door.
“Yeah!?”
“I won’t be home for dinner tonight. You and your father will have soup and homemade biscuits in the fridge. Just heat the soup and bake the biscuits!”
“Okay!” I responded and pedaled to school. It wasn’t a far pedal, as the school was only two miles from the pack territory. The school catered to humans and the supernatural. It was never an issue since we werewolves didn’t obtain our wolf counterparts until we were eighteen, and even then, most of us didn’t turn eighteen until we were about to graduate, so exposure of our kind was never an issue. Those turning eighteen before graduating were pulled out and homeschooled to prevent exposure. Since my birthday was on graduation day, my parents and the Alpha agreed that pulling me out wasn’t necessary.
When I arrived at school, I parked my bike and put the bolt lock on it, ensuring it was secure. I adjusted my bag onto my shoulders and headed to my locker. Thankfully, it was in the back corner of the hall and opened to where it hid my face. As I was separating my books and assignments according to my classes, my locker door was suddenly slammed shut, and I was met with the front of my biggest enemy. I grunted in frustration.
“What do you want, Hailey?” I asked while facing the Alpha's spoiled rotten daughter, Hailey Harding.
“What I always want, duh,” she sneered as an army of tramps behind her snickered. “Where’s your lunch money?”
“Seriously? What are you, thirteen? Who bullies someone for lunch money anymore these days? Get with the program, Hailey,” I replied and opened my locker, only for her to slam it shut again. I grunt even harder and roll my eyes. I looked at her with frustration, but before I could even see it, I felt a burn on my cheek, and my head snapped to the side. I snapped my head back, shocked that she would hit me.
I’ve been bullied and made fun of for most of my life. But never once had anyone ever been physical towards me. I was so caught off guard by what just happened I couldn’t say anything to her.
“What? Cat got your tongue?” she sneered.
“Did you just … hit me?” I finally asked, coming out of the initial shock.
“I did. You best not forget who I am, Kalea. I’m the Alpha’s daughter, which means you will show me respect. And when I ask for your lunch money, you give me your lunch money!” she shouts and grabs my bookbag. She goes through it and finds nothing. She sees my wallet and goes through it but still finds nothing. The only thing she finds are my two breakfast tacos. She looks at them disgustedly before throwing them on the ground and stomping on them. “Why am I not surprised that you’re broke? You’re a sad little Omega with poor Omega parents. I bet your birth parents were disgusting rogues that didn’t want you either,” Hailey spat. But before walking away, she slammed my head into the lockers, making my head ring. The sound of my head contacting hard metal was so loud that it garnered the attention of the students around us and some of the faculty.
“HAILEY HARDING!” one of the teachers shouted at her. Hailey and her friends froze in their spot. “Where do you think you’re going?” he asked as he got in her face.
“Hi, Mr. Scout!” Hailey says and bats her lashes at him. Mr. Scout, the senior class History teacher, doesn’t even spare her a glance.
“SATURDAY DETENTION!” he shouts at her in his deep voice and English accent. Mr. Scout was one of those teachers who moved schools every few years, so we knew a lot about him. He wasn’t part of our pack but was considered a lone wolf, so packs never bothered him, and no one ever attacked him since he always kept to himself. He was excused from his pack in England to become a teacher here in the States.
“WHAT!?” Hailey screamed.
“Want to make it two!?” he asked, crossing his arms across his chest.
“But I’m …”
“I don’t care that you are an Alpha’s daughter, Hailey,” he lowly snarled, eyes turning black. “I don’t want to answer him, or any other Alpha for that matter. What you did just now was uncalled for, and by right, I should report you to the principal to have you expelled. But since only two weeks are left in the school year, I have no problem making you spend these last two Saturdays in detention and missing the graduation ceremony as your punishment. Kalea did nothing to antagonize you.” Hailey scowled in complete rage and swiftly turned her heel and left. Knowing that Saturday detention was not voluntary, she must have just given up. She definitely didn’t want to miss graduation. The final bell rang, and I knew I was officially late for first period.
“Great!” I muttered and quickly opened my locker again and grabbed what I needed.
“Kalea, before you go,” Mr. Scout said to me. I turned to face him, a little irritated since first period was starting, and I was never tardy. “Here, a pass so you don’t get into trouble with your first period teacher. I know you’re never tardy, and you shouldn’t be punished for Hailey’s actions,” he said while handing me a pass.
“Thank you, Mr. Scout,” I replied, smiling at him. He smiled back, and we both went our separate ways. I didn’t have Mr. Scout’s class until the final period, so I wouldn’t see him again for several hours. First period was Gen. Chem, and it was one of my more accessible courses. I walked in, handed my pass to the teacher and my assignment that was due, and sat in my seat. The class went by reasonably quickly when the bell rang for the end of class. Second and third period went by a little slower, mainly because they were English Comp IV and U.S. Government, two classes I despised. When the bell for lunch rang, I went back to my locker to change my books and assignments for my last two classes and then went to the cafeteria.
Thankfully, everyone was too preoccupied with eating or socializing with one another so that I could get into the snack bar line without incident. I pulled out my lunch money from my sock and grabbed two pizza hot pockets, some fries, and a chocolate chunk cookie. I paid for my meal, went to the gym's vending machine, and bought myself a nice cold Dr. Pepper. As always, I went to my spot by the bleachers, where they caddy-cornered the soccer field, and ate my lunch peacefully.
As I was eating, I could hear someone talking. I got up and went over to the other side of the bleachers and was surprised to see Mr. Scout on the phone. He seemed in his element and didn’t notice me practically eavesdropping on his phone call.
“Yes, Your Highness, this was the first time … I promise you; this has never happened. They are mean and cruel, but no one has ever touched her until today… I give my word, Sir ... I have given the brat a punishment that only people of her so-called social hierarchy would consider detrimental … Yes … We won’t know until her birthday. I know Her Majesty has been worried about it … I will let you know as soon as I know anything … Yes, your Highness. Goodbye.” I was a little confused, only hearing his side of the phone call, but why was he calling whoever he was speaking to so formally? And why was he calling them ‘Your Highness’?
Still not noticing that I was there, Mr. Scout ended his phone call and walked away. The bell that signaled the end of lunch rang. I gathered my garbage, threw it away, and went to my final two classes. Of course, my last class was History with Mr. Scout, which was boring as usual. I hated any type of social studies related courses, and History was one of the worst. I willed my eyes to stay open for the last five minutes of class but failed miserably.
I instantly found myself in a room I didn’t recognize and several individuals circling something or someone. They all had smiles on their faces, and they were cooing.
“Oh, Renee, she’s beautiful,” I heard the shortest woman say as she clasped her cheeks.
“Son, you did good,” a man said as he patted a larger man on the back.
“Thank you, father. Mother.”
“Look at her eyes!” the other woman shouted.
“It can’t be,” the woman who seemed to be the center of attention gasped.
“Are her eyes … different colors?” a scruffy man asked.
“Mother, do you think?” the tall man asked the shortest woman. I was amazed that he would call her mother when she looked no older than 30, and he looked in his 20s. They all looked to be in their 20s and 30s, yet two were the parents of the good-looking, tall man.
“Yes, she is a pureblood,” the woman responded. “We must protect her at all costs. She is the future of this Kingdom. The future of all werewolves.” I cocked my head to the side.
“What is her name?” the other man, whose voice sounded oddly familiar, asked.
“Her is K…”
“KALEA!”
“HUH! WHAT!?” I shot my head up and came face to face with Mr. Scout.
“Kalea, I have been trying to wake you up for fifteen minutes. Classed ten minutes ago. Go home!”
“Oh, god, I’m sorry, Mr. Scout!” I exclaimed and shot out of my seat while grabbing my bookbag. “I promise it will never happen again!”
“It’s fine. I assume that your head injury from this morning is the cause of it?” he asks.
“Yeah, it might be. I should head home and take some ibuprofen,” I replied.
“Yes, you go do that,” he replied. I cocked my head while staring at him. I’ve known him practically my entire life because of his teaching career, but for some reason, his voice sounded vaguely familiar, and it had nothing to do with him being a teacher in my life for so long.
“Um, Mr. Scout?” I turned to face him as he cleared his desk for the day.
“Yes, Kalea?”
“Never mind, actually,” I replied immediately. If I told him that I thought he was in my dreams, he might take it the wrong way, and the last thing I wanted was for my extremely hot and sexy teacher to assume I was having dirty dreams about him. I turned and left. I stopped at my locker to grab my things and headed out to my bike, only to find that it was gone. In its place is a note. I held and read it and was fuming by the time I was done. “YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!” I screamed at the top of my lungs.
“Kalea?” I turned around to see Mr. Scout again gave me a weird look. My teacher thought I was insane because I was screaming and cursing at myself. “Is everything alright?” he asked me.
“No,” I reply curtly. “Someone stole my bike,” I answer as I stuff the note in my back pocket so he doesn’t see it.
“Do you need me to call your parents?” he asks, concerned.
“No, I don’t want my parents to worry.”
“How do you plan on getting home then?”
“I can walk. It’s only two miles. Not very far,” I replied and adjusted my bookbag on my back. I started talking but stopped when I felt someone grab my arm.
“Kalea, allow me to drive you home. A young lady should never walk alone, especially when it’s going to get dark before you make it home,” he says to me. He was right. Since school got out at four in the afternoon and I had overslept in class, it was almost five in the evening. By the time I made it home, the sun would be setting. The vast forest life in this area would be much darker than in the city.
“Okay, yeah, sure,” I replied, walking him to his car. I entered the passenger seat and silently sat for the six-minute drive to my house. Two more weeks. Just two more weeks. I kept chanting to myself. Then, I would get my wolf and hopefully find my mate. Then, living in this hellhole might be worth it.
Chapter 2
Kalea
After Mr. Scout dropped me off at home, I said thank you and goodbye and that I would see him tomorrow at school. I shut the door of his car but was surprised that he didn’t leave right away. I didn’t look back, but as soon as I was inside the house and closed the door, I heard his car pull out of the driveway. I figured he wanted to make sure that I got in the house safely, even though it was only a ten-foot walk.
I threw my bookbag onto the couch and face-planted myself on the opposite side. I was startled to hear someone clear their throat,
“AH!” I sat up and looked at the recliner to see my father.
“Dad! You scared the crap out of me!” I shouted at him as I sat up and held my chest. “Why are you home? Mom said you were coming home late?” I asked him as I composed myself and sat up straight.
“I was injured during training, sweetie. The Beta sent me home to rest,” he replied. That’s when I saw that he had a sling supporting his left arm.
“Daddy, what happened?” I asked with concern as I went and kneeled next to him.
“It’s a dislocated shoulder. Nothing major. It doesn’t even hurt anymore. I should be fine in the morning.”
“Does mom know?”
“She does. She saw it happen. She’s the one who forced me to go to pack hospital.”
“Of course, you didn’t want to, am I right?” I asked, giving him a knowing look. Omega or not, Dad was still a werewolf, and all werewolves had some sort of pride in them—especially male werewolves.
“Since when does a werewolf want to go to the pack hospital, Two-Tone?” he replied.
“Ugh,” I grunted at this ridiculous nickname for me. Knowing that he would be fine, I returned to my seat on the couch and slumped while resting my head on the cushion.
“Kalea, what happened to your head?” he asked. I looked over at him and lifted an eyebrow in confusion. That’s when I remembered what happened at school with Hailey.
“Oh, um …”
“Did someone hit you?!” he growled while sitting up, his eyes turning black.
“No, Dad!” I said initially, but I knew he wouldn’t buy it. “Well, not exactly,” I changed my answer. He glared at me, wanting to hear an actual answer. I puffed out my cheeks and rolled my eyes, knowing he wouldn’t let this go. “Fine. Hailey slammed my head against the locker because I mocked her for trying to steal my lunch money.”

“THAT LITTLE WOMAN!” my father snarled, standing to his feet while ripping away his sling.
“DAD! You can’t do anything! She’s the Alpha’s daughter! You know how highly he thinks of his kids!” I said, standing before him, knowing he would run over there and rip her head off.
“And you’re my daughter! Physical assault against a pack member is against the law! As the Alpha’s daughter, she should know that better than anyone!” he snapped at me, trying to push me away.
“Dad! You going over there and starting mess is only going to make things worse for me!” I defended, making him stop and lock eyes with me. He struggled with his wolf but finally calmed down, and his eyes returned to their normal brown. “Dad, sit,” I told him, pushing him back towards the recliner. He took his seat and let out a frustrated breath. He looked at the side of my head and ran his finger across what I assumed was a massive bruise I hadn’t noticed.
“I can’t believe that brat had the audacity to harm you physically,” he said softly.
“I’m okay, Dad. I promise. It wasn’t even that hard, anyway. She doesn’t have her wolf yet, so it wasn’t as bad as it could have been. Besides, Mr. Scout saw and gave her Saturday detention this weekend. He even threatened to make her do it next week and pull her out of the graduation ceremony if she tried to talk back,” I tell him with a smirk. He snuffed but smirked as well. I knew that would make him feel a little bit better.
“That reminds me, who was that that dropped you off? Where is your bike?”
“That was Mr. Scout. My bike was stolen … again, and I’m pretty sure that it was Hailey’s doing.”
“Well, tell your teacher that I said thank you. Mr. Scout seems like a good man and wolf.”
“Well, he doesn’t seem to have any qualms against us or the pack. He is a lone wolf, after all. That is probably why he can get away with punishing Hailey. He doesn’t answer to Alpha Harding.”
“Speaking of, I will have to report this to him. Regardless if she’s his daughter, she must obey pack laws just like the rest of us. Even more so because she’s the Alpha’s daughter.”
“Dad, don’t, please,” I begged him.
“Kalea, I wouldn’t be surprised if the principal already reported it. Or even your teacher. Mr. Scout may not belong to our pack, but I’m sure he knows pack laws more than anyone. It’s why he can get away with being a lone wolf.” I sighed in frustration, knowing that he was right. Because Mr. Scout had given detention, it would have been reported to the school principal, who also happened to be our pack’s Delta female and Hailey’s maternal aunt. She was the Luna’s older sister, and everyone knew she couldn’t stand the Alpha children’s bad manners. If anything, she was always fighting with the Luna because of it and saying that how she and the Alpha raised Josh and Hailey would doom the pack because of how immature they were.
“I’m going to go get some homework done,” I say and stand up, but as soon as I do, I receive a mind-link. Weird, I know, but given that he’s the Alpha, he can link with all pack members, shifted or not.
Kalea.
Yes, Alpha?
Report to my office at the packhouse at once.
Yes, Alpha. Shall I bring my father with me?
No, this will be quick. It doesn’t require a parent.
Yes, Alpha. I will be right there.
The link severed, and I looked down at my father, who had a knowing gaze. He knew that the Alpha had summoned me.
“It probably has to do with Hailey,” my father told me. I nodded my head and made my way to the packhouse. This was going to be interesting.
Hailey
“HAILEY HARDING! ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND!!!” my father roared at me. I bowed my head immediately and sent a glare towards my aunt.
When I got home from school, I wanted to change and do some major shopping for graduation, but my father told me to come to his office. When I saw Aunt Minny, short for Minerva, sitting across from him at his desk, and the dirty look she gave me when I walked in, I knew she had told him what happened at school.
“She was being disrespectful! I had to remind her of her place, Daddy!” I defended.
“With what authority? You’re nothing in this pack!” he shouted at me and slammed his hand on the table. “Just because you are my daughter does not mean you have any kind of hearsay or authority! Who do you think you are hitting a pack member!?” he scolded me.
“Honey, be gentle. She’s only a child,” my mother said, putting her hand on his shoulder to calm him down. He shoved her away.
“This is why she is the way she is! You coddle her too much! She’s going to be 18 in less than a month, and she still acts as if she’s a child!” Aunt Minny chastised my mother. “She assaulted another pack member!”
“And what if it was self-defense!?” my mother countered.
“Self-defense!? Mandy admitted to doing it because she wanted to teach Kalea a lesson!” Minny yelled and threw her hands up as if she couldn’t believe my mother's stupidness.
“ENOUGH!” my father boomed. Everyone lowered their heads except for my mother. She just turned to face away from him. “I’ve called Kalea here.”
“You what!?” I exclaimed.
“I want to hear her side of the story. As an Alpha, I have to hear both sides. I’ve heard what your Aunt Minny had to say, but I need to hear it from her. It’s only fair.”
“But Dad!”
“Sweetheart!” my mother and I said at the same time.
“I said enough!” he boomed again, and we both shut our mouths. We both shot glares of hatred toward my aunt, who didn’t even seem fazed by it. A few minutes later, there was a knock on the door. “Come in!” the door opened, and in walked my worst nightmare.
“Alpha, you wanted to see me?” she asked, pretending to be all nice and sweet. She looked around the room and saw me. Her facial expression was blank, and she just blinked without saying anything.
“Kalea, please, come have a seat,” my father said while pointing to my aunt's chair. She got up and let Kalea sit. I glared at Kalea as soon as her bottom hit the cushion, but my father growled at me. “Mandy, Minny, please leave the room,” he directed my mom and aunt. They both left and closed the door behind them.
“What can I do for you, Alpha?” Kalea asked him.
“Kalea, it has been brought to my attention that my daughter committed a heinous act against you. But before I can do anything about it, I need your statement on what happened. Can you do that?” my father asked with slight annoyance in his tone.
“Is that really necessary?” Kalea asked.
“I’m afraid it is,” he replied. Kalea sighed and nodded her head. My father turned around to grab what I assumed was the tape recorder so he could record it for the pack records since he had to. When he wasn’t looking, I nudged Kalea with my elbow and stared at her. She glared right back at me. I grabbed her arm, pulled her towards me, and whispered in her ear as low as I could so only she could hear me.
“You’re going to tell him that you slipped and fell. If you even think of ratting me out, I’ll make your already sorry excuse of a life even more miserable. Do you clearly hear me, orphan woman?” I gritted my teeth. When my father turned back around, I pretended nothing happened. Kalea rolled her eyes and puffed her bangs out of her hair.
“Kalea, whenever you’re ready,” my father said, placing the recorder on the desk. Kalea looked at it, then me, and then back at my father. I could see the wheels turning in her head. “Kalea?”
“Yes, Alpha. I’m sorry. I’m just trying to figure out if lying to prevent future bullying from your daughter is worth it,” Kalea said.
“Excuse me?” my father snarled.
“Did I stutter, Alpha? Hailey just told me that I should lie to you. Otherwise, she would make my life a living hell. And I’m trying to think if I should lie or not,” Kalea responded without hesitation. This woman had a death wish. I couldn’t believe she would directly oust me to my dad.
“YOU WOMAN!” I screamed and grabbed her by the hair. “AHHHH!!!” I screamed while shaking her head with all of my strength. “YOU’RE LUCKY I DON’T HAVE MY WOLF YET!!! I WOULD RIP YOUR HEAD OFF!!” I screamed at the top of my lungs, threw her to the floor, and kicked her head.
“HAILEY!!!” my father roared, shaking the office. The door flew open as my mother, and Minny came rushing in.
“Oh, my goddess, Kalea, are you alright?!” Minny asked while helping her to her feet.
“Minny, take her to the pack hospital and make sure she doesn’t have a head injury that can cause permanent damage,” my father growled. The door closed behind them, and I turned to my father.
“Do you realize WHAT YOU’VE JUST DONE!?!” he screamed at the top of his lungs while throwing the vase on the floor. I shuddered in fear as his wolf came forward.
“Micah! Micah!” my mother shouted as she tried to calm him down. Which worked, but only enough to get his wolf to retreat. My father was still very much pissed off at me.
“You realize that you attacked a pack member!? You threatened to kill her! In my office! Where there are cameras!” he yelled while getting my face. “Even your brother wasn’t that stupid! He at least kept the bullying to words! He never physically touched her because he knew it was against the law to assault a pack member unprovoked! Yet you did it twice in a single day! HOW CAN YOU BE SO STUPID!? Then again, I shouldn’t be surprised; you take after your mother, after all,” he spat.
“Micah!?” my mother gasped.
“What?! Did I say something wrong?! You are stupid! And it appears that your daughter has taken after you! And now, I am bound by law to punish her!”
“Micah, she’s your daughter! And she’s only 17!” my mother exclaimed.
“And she’s lucky she’s only 17! Had she been 18, I would have to turn her over to the elders, who would decide her fate!” He snapped at her, making her step back. “Hailey, since you’re still a minor, I can’t give you an actual werewolf punishment. But I can give you a human one. You’re grounded. You will have no graduation ceremony, and the party will be canceled!”
“BUT DAD!”
“Micah, we can’t cancel the graduation party! It’s for the entire pack and all of the graduating seniors! It’s just not just for Hailey! Don’t punish the entire pack!” my mother quickly opposed.
“Fine, but you’re still grounded and will not attend graduation. I will tell your aunt to bring your diploma to the packhouse.”
“DADDY! THIS ISN’T FAIR!!” I cried.
“YOU BROUGHT THIS ON YOURSELF! Had you kept your hands to yourself, this would never have happened! I couldn't care less about that sorry excuse of a werewolf! But she’s still a pack member, and we have laws to follow. Your mother and I condoned the bullying and name-calling. We specifically told you never to harm her physically, yet you couldn’t even listen to that! Your punishment is fair and just! Now get the out of my sight!” I stood and ran out of his office crying. This was all Kalea’s fault. All she had to do was keep her mouth shut and lie, but she couldn’t even do that right. I was going to make the woman pay tomorrow.
“You’re an idiot; you do know that right?” I turned to see my brother Josh standing in the hallway with his arms crossed and leaning on the wall.
“What do you want, Josh!?” I shouted at him.
“You just couldn’t help yourself, could you? You just had to hit her?”
“She was being disrespectful!”
“She’s always disrespectful. She’s an Omega woman who defies her superiors. You don’t think I didn’t hit her for just and giggles, do you? I’ve wanted to smash her face into the ground more than I can count, but I restrained myself.”
“Why!?”
“Why? Because Daddy dearest threatened to take away the Alpha title from me if I hit her. Omega orphan or not, Kalea is still a pack member, and as future Alpha, I had to refrain from hitting her if I wanted my birthright. Now I suggest you keep your head down until graduation and the woman turns 18.”
“Why? What does it matter when she turns 18?” I asked him. His eyes darted to the side, and he let out a slight snarl.
“Just do what Dad says and stop getting into trouble. Kalea will be out of our hair in due time,” he said and walked away. I furrowed my brows at him. Josh knew something that I didn’t, but what?
Chapter 3
Kalea
After meeting with Alpha Harding, things were pretty quiet at home and school. Due to the punishment handed out by Mr. Scout, Hailey has stopped picking on me. The week went by without so much as a peep from her. With Alpha Harding having grounded her and making her miss graduation, I doubt that she would be another ruckus. Though, I was pretty sure the Alpha wouldn’t prevent his daughter from attending the ceremony. Even though what she did to me was horrible, she didn’t deserve to miss this big milestone. Regardless, she was barely going to graduate anyway. Just because she was the Alpha’s daughter didn’t mean that title naturally came with brains. Hailey was in the bottom percentile of our entire class, which wasn’t very large.
The final week of school was filled with nothing but finals, and I spent the better half of the weekend in my room or at the library studying for my tests. My parents continuously asked whether or not I would be leaving Wyoming for college, and my answer repeatedly was, “I don’t know.” Even though I had been accepted to several pristine universities with full-ride scholarships, I just couldn’t see myself leaving the pack or my potential mate. Mom mentioned that he may not be in our pack, which got me thinking, “What if?”
“Knock, knock,” I heard my Mom’s voice as she opened the door to my room. “Kalea, I cut up some fruit. Do you want some?”
“Sure, Mom,” I replied. She came in and placed a paper plate on my desk. There were apples, strawberries, mango, and my favorite, red dragon fruit. “Thanks,” I mumble and hug her quickly before returning to my studies.
“Kalea, sweetheart, are you excited?” she asks me as she sits on my bed.
“About?” I ask in return without lifting my head from my notes.
“The night of graduation. It’s going to be your birthday that same night. You’ll finally obtain your wolf and the possibility of finding your destined mate,” she said with glee in her tone. I dropped my pen, sighed, and looked over at her. She had hearts in her pupils, and she wasn’t even the one this was all falling on.
“Mom, I don’t have time for a mate,” I tell her. I wasn’t sure if I was telling her for her or myself, but either way, I wasn’t in the right mindset to entertain the idea. “Besides, aren’t you the one who told me that my mate might not even be in this pack?” I throw at her with a knowing look.
“Well, that’s only if you don’t find him on your birthday,” she tells me. I let out another sigh. “Honey, why are you so apprehensive all of a sudden? You were always excited about finding your mate,” she says, coming over to me while combing my hair with her fingers. I loved it when she did that. I look up at her, and I can’t help but notice the differences now. It never occurred to me when I was little, but now that I’m almost 18, the differences between our physical appearance and that of my Father are too noticeable.
Mom was a natural redhead, while Dad was dirty blonde. The height difference was one of the more considerable differences, and let’s not forget our eye colors. Mom had green eyes, while Dad had hazel eyes, and me, well, one eye was sapphire blue, and the other was brown. Everyone thought it was a congenital disability for a long time until my parents came clean about the adoption.
“Mom?”
“Hm?”
“Can you tell me how you guys found me again?” I asked while turning to face her and hugging her waist.
“Again? But we’ve told you the story now a dozen times,” she replied sweetly, combing my hair with her fingers.
“I know, but I like hearing it,” I answer. I feel her eyes, but I don’t bother looking up. After a few moments of silence, she squeezes and pulls me over to the bed. We sit and face each other while she takes my hand in hers.
“When you were just a baby, your Father was on patrol one night while a few of the kitchen staff and I were in the garden gathering fruits, veggies, and herbs for a feast that the Alpha and Luna were having. I realized we needed apples for one of the fruit centerpieces the Luna wanted, so I went to the pack orchard. While I was picking some apples between the trees, I heard a faint cry from the woods behind the pack territory. I wasn’t sure if it was within the border or outside of it, so I mind-linked your Father. He came running over, and I told him what I had heard. Of course, being the stubborn man he is, he figured I was hearing things. At that time, we were still heartbroken that I could never conceive. He thought my mind was playing tricks on me, but he heard the cries, too. He shushed me, and he went to go investigate…”
“And there I found the most beautiful baby girl.” We both looked up and saw my Dad standing in the doorway. We both smiled. “When I saw this beautiful helpless creature, I couldn’t help but wonder. Could the moon goddess be blessing us because we couldn’t have children? You were in this beautiful woven wool blanket lined with silk and the good kind. The blanket was lavender, and I was surprised because most women want their girls to be covered in pink. On the blanket was your name – Kalea.”
“Wait, what?” I said. “You weren’t the ones who named me?”
“Did we never tell you this part of the story?” my Mom asked, and I shook my head.
“Oh, my, I thought we had. I’m so sorry, sweetheart,” she responded. I looked up at my Dad, who had the guiltiest expression.
“So, my name was already chosen when you had found me?” I asked my Dad. He nodded his head.
“I looked around where you were placed and realized it was literally an inch across the pack border. Whoever your birth parents were, they knew what they were doing. It’s how I instinctively knew that you were one of us—a werewolf. Humans would never know about our border, let alone that just behind the trees was a werewolf pack,” he continued.
“Kalea, did we tell you about the note?” my Mother asked me. I looked back at her with wide eyes. “Oh, I guess we haven’t,” she concluded herself.
“Note?” I looked back at my Father. He cleared his throat and walked out of my room. About two minutes later, he returned with a small box in his hands. He handed it to me; I took it and placed it on my lap. I looked at them both and hesitantly opened the box. I was shocked to find the lavender baby blanket and a piece of parchment paper. The blanket felt so expensive as if it were woven and made by hand, specifically for me. The paper felt expensive, too. It wasn’t your run-of-the-mill notebook paper. No, this felt like it was from the Renaissance era and was used by royalty.
“We were going to give this to you on your birthday for graduation, but I think it’s best if we give it to you now,” my Father says and stands back. “Honey, I think we should leave her to read it privately,” he tells my Mom. Mom kisses my temple, and I don’t even look at them. I’m too captivated by the items in front of me. These two particular things were on me the day I was found by my parents. I heard my bedroom door close softly. I unfolded the note and was surprised that it was addressed to me.
Kalea,
Happy 18th birthday, my beautiful daughter. I’m sure you are wondering what is happening and why you are now receiving this. The reason is because we, as in your Mother and I, feel that you are at the age where you will be able to understand and see things from our perspective. Kalea, we didn’t give you up because we didn’t want you. We gave you up because we had to protect you. However, I cannot explain why just yet; you will soon come to know what we are protecting you from. You may not believe it yet, but please know that your Mother and I love you with everything we have. You are our only pup, and it pains us both to part ways with you.
Your grandparents will never forgive us, but as your parents, it is our duty to protect you at all costs. Even if that means we must live in heartbreak for years. We hope that one day, you will find it in your heart to forgive us. We love you more than words can comprehend, Kalea. We will see you again.
Love,
Your Father, Tobias.
My mouth hung open as I finished reading the note. The handwriting was so pristine to have been written by a man I almost thought it was fake. But what made me realize it was real were the dried-up spots of water droplets on the paper. But I realized it wasn’t from water but from tears. My birth Father cried while writing this to me. I held the note in my hand and picked up the blanket. I clutched it, brought it to my face, and smelled it. It smelled like a newborn baby mixed with watermelon on a hot summer day. I smiled and inhaled again.
I was speechless and just held onto the items as I laid back and rested my head on my pillow. I was surprised that my birth Father signed his name on the note. Then again, the name Tobias is pretty standard. My birth Father could be anyone. I honestly wished there was a way to find them, but unfortunately, werewolf births aren’t recorded like human births. And there’s no telling where I was born, either. I could have been born in a third-world country for all I know. I take a deep breath and decide to get back to studying. I only had a week left of school before my entire world changed again.
When Monday morning rolled around, and my alarm clock went off without fail, I groaned in frustration because I knew that I didn’t get more than two hours of sleep after being up all night studying. I lifted my head and looked over at my bed, still seeing the baby blanket and note from my birth Father. I smiled softly and walked over to the bed. I picked up the blanket to sniff it again, but I saw a chunk missing from it. I spread it out on the bed and noticed an entire corner missing. I cocked my head to the side and found it strange. I figured I would ask my parents about it when I went down for breakfast. I folded it back up, placed it with the note back into the box, and tucked it safely under my bed.
After that was said and done, I jumped in the shower to wash away the sleepiness that I was still carrying. Afterward, I felt refreshed and dressed in a simple black t-shirt, skinny jeans, and black and white Pumas. I gathered up all of my school supplies, threw them into my bookbag, and skipped down the stairs to the dining room.
“Good morning, Two-Tone,” my Dad said from behind the morning newspaper. I was still surprised that these things were still being made.
“Good morning, Daddy,” I reply and kiss his cheek. I was getting some milk from the fridge when I remembered the blanket. “Hey, Dad?”
“Yes?”
“My baby blanket, the one you found me in?”
“Mmmhmm?”
“Did you know that a chunk of fabric is missing from it?” I asked him as I poured the milk into my oatmeal.
“Yes, I did. That’s how it was when I found you,” he replied, putting the paper down and smiling at me.
“Oh, okay. I was just wondering,” I said and put my oatmeal into the microwave to heat a bit after adding cold milk.
“Are you ready for your exams?” my Mother asked, coming from the pantry with onions and potatoes in hand.
“As ready as I’ll ever be. Only three days of finals, two days to bask in the amazing feeling of no more school and graduation!” I squeal at the time the microwave beeps. I take out my oatmeal and join my Dad at the table.
“And don’t forget your birthday, sweet girl. Do you want to do the usual?” my Mom asks.
“Sure!” I said enthusiastically. The usual consisted of going to my favorite breakfast diner, shopping, and then ice cream at the famous creamery. Then it would be off to graduation and then the pack party.
Exams went by faster than I could have comprehended. Before I knew it, day one was already over, and I knew I had aced all of my exams for the day. As I was leaving my last class for the day and heading to my locker to empty it and take personal effects home, I couldn’t help but overhear some pack members chattering by the exit.
“Did you hear the rumors?” one girl asked.
“About what?” another asked in return.
“The Alpha is going announce Josh as his successor at the graduation party!” the first one shouted in a whisper. “I heard directly from Hailey,” she added.
“Oh my gosh, I wonder if he will finally announce who his mate is!?”
“Maybe? I mean, he will be twenty and has yet to find his destined mate. Who knows, he may end up taking a chosen mate instead.”
“I wonder if it’s one of us!?” the third squealed excitedly. “None of us are 18 yet. So many of us will be 18 in the next few weeks and during the summer. You never know!” she said with joy to her friends.
“Oh my goddess, you’re right!” the other two squealed with her. I just rolled my eyes as I eavesdropped on their conversation. Josh finally becomes Alpha. Strangely, I remember Alpha Harding telling him he would only pass down the title once Josh settled down. Either Josh has found a chosen mate, or the Alpha is ready to retire. I shrugged my shoulders to myself, not really caring. Josh was a piece of crap, but I half expected that he’d at least grown up since being out of high school for a few years. Yeah, he was the worst bully I had endured for two years, but I have eyes and can see perfectly. Josh was a fine-looking specimen. Hell, all male werewolves were. There was no denying that Josh had it all – the grades, the looks, the body, and, I’m pretty confident, the anatomy. All of the girls that ever had a chance to sleep with him would never stop talking about how big he was in that spectrum.
That was the furthest thing on my list of priorities. Was I a little nervous about finding my destined mate by the end of this week? Sure, what teenage girl wouldn’t be nervous to possibly find the love of her life that was fated to her by the all-powerful and all-knowing moon goddess? It’s even a teen she-wolf’s dream to find her destined as soon as she turns 18. But knowing my luck in the area of love, my mate wouldn’t be here, and if he were here on the off chance, he would probably reject me. I mean, why wouldn’t he? Everyone in the student body and the pack has already denied me. Why would it be any different with my mate? Either way, I wasn’t going to worry about that right now. I still had more exams to study for. I’ll worry about the mate bond when that time comes. If it ever does.
