FORTY years old today! It’s a short amount of time, but I’ve learned a lot of lessons along the way. In honor of this milestone birthday, I thought I would share some personal pieces of advice I try to live by.

1. Always send a thank you note – even for something that seems small. The gesture goes a long way.
2. Ladies – a little lipstick will change your mood. Wear the lipstick!
3. Learn to enjoy time alone. If you can’t enjoy being by yourself, how do you expect others to enjoy your company?
4. Invest time into the people you love.
5. If you’re running late, call and let the other person know.
6. Your habits shape your identity.
7. Foul language does not make you more attractive. It is unnecessary, and may affect what people think of you. It is not of God.
8. Our words should build others up and show grace to those who hear.
9. Practice good cellphone etiquette (in public) and be respectful to others.
10. We can do hard things.
11. If a recipe calls for vanilla (or bourbon), measure with your heart.
12. It is okay to love someone from a distance if they aren’t right for you or hurt you.
13. Lamps don’t talk, they shine. Be a light to those around you.
14. You won’t be the same person at 15 that you are at 25, 35, or 45. Give yourself grace and grow each and every day.
15. Good intentions are everywhere, but intentionality is rare.
16. The first act of love is the giving of attention.
17. Your now isn’t your forever.
18. Choose your circle wisely.
19. Success is the product of daily habits.
20. Your emotions are a barometer of your heart.
