Understanding and overcoming Anger as a sin
Day 2
A-Z sins book
By David Taylor

Scripture Reading: Matthew 5:21-22 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment.”

Reflection: Anger is a powerful emotion that can lead us down two very different paths. In Scripture, we see that not all anger is inherently sinful. There are instances where Jesus expressed righteous anger, such as when He overturned the tables of the money changers in the temple as seen in Matthew 21:12-13. This type of anger is born out of a desire for justice and holiness, aimed at correcting wrongs and advocating for righteousness. However, the sin of anger, particularly against our brothers and sisters, carries a more profound weight. Jesus teaches that anger directed at a fellow human being can lead to severe consequences. When we harbor anger in our hearts, it can fester into bitterness, resentment, and ultimately, a breakdown of relationships. This warning serves as a reminder that our emotions are not just personal; they affect our community and our walk with God.

The Sin of Anger: When we experience anger, it can be a natural response to injustice or hurt. Yet, if we allow that anger to consume us, it can lead to bitterness and strife. Ephesians 4:26-27 encourages us to “In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.” This passage highlights the importance of managing our anger before it transforms into something more destructive.

The Sin of Anger Against One’s Brother: When our anger is directed toward a brother or sister, it becomes more than just a fleeting emotion; it is a breach of the commandment to love one another as seen in John 13:34-35. Jesus equates this anger with murder in the heart, showing how serious it is to harbor harmful feelings toward others. The deeper implication is that such anger can lead to division within the body of Christ, damaging our relationships and weakening our witness to the world.

Application:

1. Self-Examination: Take time to reflect on any feelings of anger you may be harboring. Are there unresolved conflicts or grudges that need to be addressed?

2. Seek Reconciliation: If you recognize anger toward a brother or sister, consider reaching out to them. Apologize if necessary, and seek to restore the relationship.

3. Pray for Guidance: Ask God to help you manage your emotions and turn any anger into a constructive force for good, aligning it with His will.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for teaching us the importance of our emotions and their impact on our relationships. Help us to recognize the difference between righteous anger and the sin of anger against our brothers and sisters. May we strive to love one another deeply and seek reconciliation when anger arises. Fill our hearts with Your peace and guide us in all our interactions. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Action step : As we go about our days, let us remember to approach our emotions with grace, seeking to honor God in our thoughts, words, and actions.
